Williamson Country Fair Wins Awards At International Levels The Williamson County Fair has once again been recognized among the best internationally for excellence and innovation at the 2021 Fair, collecting a total of six awards at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE). The Williamson County Fair is known for its specialty in agricultural education, and every year, fairgoers look forward to the nightly livestock shows, educational exhibits and competitive events. The Fair proudly shares that they have received three awards in the Agricultural contest this year. The Iroquois Steeplechase Donates $135,000 The Iroquois Steeplechase presented Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt with a donation of $115,000 on behalf of the proceeds of the 2021 race meet at Percy Warner Park. Nearly $11 million has been donated to Children’s Hospital over a 40-year partnership. Additionally, The Friends of Warner Parks, which assists in the preservation of the Percy Warner Park grounds, received a $20,000 donation from Iroquois Steeplechase. IroquoisSteepleChase.org.

A Balanced Diet Is Tamales In Each Hand

Joe Morales and David Vincent Williams grew up in Joe’s family’s restaurant, Casa Morales in Lufkin, Texas and have been best friends ever since. Now they’re business partners for the new Cool Springs restaurant, Tamale Joe’s. The restaurant was built on the foundation of their 50-year friendship, award-winning salsa, and the tamale recipe that has been in Joe’s family for over 200 years. Joe’s Grandma Casi taught him the tamale recipe, which has been passed down for generations. David says, “For as long as I can remember, she used to come over to make tamales once a year from Mexico. Her tamales were just out of this world. The whole neighborhood would just gorge on them for three days. She lived a great life and had a beautiful spirit about her.” Doña Casi sadly passed away last year at age 93, but her legacy will live on in the love poured into Tamale Joe’s. Grandma Casi blessed each tamale she put into the pot. David says, “That kind of commitment is laced in Joe’s fabric of a person.” Joe Morales is Tamale Joe, the face of the business. Joe says, “Our goal here in Nashville is to introduce the tamale. We took for granted that everyone knew what a tamale was, but some people think they need to eat the corn husk. That’s just a wrapping and the tamale is inside.” They’re planning on educating the community about what a traditional tamale should taste like. Tamales can be made a variety of ways and people are often misinformed about what they really are. Tamale Joe’s also caters and sells tamales in bulk through their distribution services, which they agree is a huge part of their business, as tamales are seasonal and not common in this area. They are the first franchisable tamale restaurant concept in America. The duo’s favorite thing on the menu is the brisket tamale which they describe as “brilliant” and a “happy accident.” That’s one of seven different tamales in addition to street tacos, quesadillas and burritos. Pair with a margarita or seasonal cocktail from their beautiful bar, which boasts the biggest tequila menu in the state of Tennessee. When Tamale Joe’s first opened in July 2021, they adapted into a fast-casual dining experience because

of COVID, supply chain, and labor limitations. However, their true vision for Tamale Joe’s was to be an upscale dinner theater with the finest service and introduce a new entertainment venue to Franklin. David explains, “2022 is going to be the year that Tamale Joe’s redefines itself and molds itself into a hybrid of sorts, from its first conception to a lasting model. The nice restaurant with the fast food element is confusing to people. We’re going to use 2022 to separate those entities.” Their Cool Springs location will transform into their dinner theater while they open two-three Tamale Joe’s Rápidos. The locations of the fast food drive-thrus are still to be determined, but will have the same beloved menu from 2021. Joe is curating a special dinner menu for the sit-in restaurant. On the weekends, hall of fame songwriters and popular comedians will take the Tamale Joe’s stage. Joe jokes, “We have David Vincent Williams and his friends.” David has been in the music industry for almost 30 years and often performs at Tamale Joe’s. These ticketed events are a highlight of what they’re looking forward to this year. Nothing can test Joe and David’s powerful friendship. Through unpredictable circumstances in the restaurant industry, their bond and trust in each other only grew stronger. The Tennis Store Serves Up an Ace for Racquet Sport Lovers The Tennis Store in Cool Springs, by Trader Joe’s in the Thoroughbred Shopping Center, is the county’s leading shop for tennis and pickleball gear. Open for 10 years, the store was recently purchased by Leonard and Maria Dinoia, Franklin residents who recognized an opportunity to serve the community with a successful small business in a great location. “Our teenage son plays tennis and that got us interested in the sport, and we’re enjoying learning more as we go,” says Maria. Leonard spent 30 years working in finance and says he was attracted to the store’s ability to be a “one-stop-shop for everything tennis related.” The store came with a terrific, knowledgeable staff, and Leonard says that managing inventory and “just getting people out to exercise” appeals to him. The 900-square foot store offers tennis racquets from brands including Babolat, Wilson, Yonex and Head; court shoes by K-Swiss, Nike and Mizuno; and apparel by Sofibella, Donajo, Tasc, Maggie Mother, and many others. Accessories include power grips, monogrammed towels, mugs and bags. Tennis racquets sell for $99 - $220 and include a junior’s line with racquets as small as 17 inches. CONTINUED >

The explosion in pickleball popularity has created a need for more paddles and gear, including equipment by Gearbox, Encore and Selkirk. Paddles cost anywhere from $100 - $200 and are made with carbon fiber, graphite or polypropylene, some with a honeycomb interior. “Pickleball has really grown,” says Leonard. “The learning curve is easy, and people can get playing quickly.” Players wanting to try racquets or paddles can take advantage of the store’s demo program, where equipment is borrowed for 3-7 days so customers can determine which styles they prefer. Franklin resident Liz Piper, a former driver’s ed teacher (“and I survived!”) who plays tennis twice a week at the Williamson County Rec Center, is a regular customer of The Tennis Store. “I still get the small-town feel here,” she said during a morning visit to pick up a demo racquet. “I can come in here and be informed, learn which shoe is better for my playing style, and get guidance from the staff.” Among those staff members are Sunyoung Fitt, Jim Philpot, Jennifer Petersen, Nashville pro Rodney Williams, and lead racquet stringer Seth Benton, who has been stringing racquets for 30 years. Benton keeps a record of his customer’s strings, made from either natural gut, polyester synthetic gut, or multi-filament. He can advise when a racquet has a loss of tension and control and turn around a re-string in 24 hours for just $30 - $75. The Dinoias are eager to carry on the traditions and recommendations created by the store’s previous owners. “We’re looking forward to taking care of the tennis and pickleball communities as best we can,” Leonard says. Make the Most of It • While tennis dates back to 12th Century France, Pickleball is relatively new, invented in 1965. Spectrum Health calls Pickleball the fastest growing sport in America. Both sports are played between singles or doubles players, and both offer tremendous health benefits. • Tennis is played on a larger, rectangular court and pickleball is played on a doubles badminton court. • Getting out to play will burn calories, lower body fat, increase balance and agility, improve reaction times, and perhaps best of all, bring friends together, improving mood and mental health. • Westhaven resident Adam Leavitt, 45, plays in a pickleball league five to eight hours a week and likes that the sport can be played by anyone at any age. “My eight year-old can play pickleball, and my mother has been playing for 10 years. Anyone can play, even if you’re not an athlete.” • Legend has it that that Pickleball was named after the game inventor’s dog, Pickles, who often ran off with the ball!

When you’re talking with celebrity fitness trainer Erin Oprea, it doesn’t take long to feel just how excited she is about wellness and fitness. Her spirit is contagious. “I look at fitness in a different way than a lot of people. I don’t have a goal like to lose weight or anything. Fitness makes me feel good. I look at it as a gift to be able to work out. Think of all the people that would kill to work out but can’t. I just changed my mindset. It’s not an option- it’s a gift. Get out there and do it. And it 100% changes my mood if I’m cranky or mad. And then when I start, I feel five million times better and I think ‘Why didn’t I want to do this?’” If you’re like most people, you could probably come up with a million reasons why you don’t want to workout. The Nashville resident says “The more you move, the better you feel. And then you want to do it.” Oprea adds, “Don’t hyper-focus on the scale because all it does is distract you. Nobody cares what the number on that scale is.” The naysayers told her she couldn’t name her app ‘Pretty Muscles’ but she did it anyway. “I think muscles are absolutely beautiful. And they don’t have to be big and bulky. The more muscles you have, the more calories you burn at rest, and it’s a win-win.”

She gives us the lowdown on the app. “My philosophy of training is simple yet super-effective, solid training. It’s something everybody can do. Everyday is a different workout for the whole year and I’ve made it for all levels of fitness. We have brand new programs {this January}. If you want to do it low impact, you can do it that way. My biggest thing is to focus on perfect form. It is the most important thing. It’s more of a weight training, but I do have cardio days built in and rest days built in.” It also includes a full meal plan because as Oprea says, “You can’t out-train a bad diet.” Oprea also swears by the benefits of beet juice (“Anytime you want that cup of coffee for the afternoon slump, it’s amazing for that”) and is the author of The 4x4 Diet and the 2021 release,The Power Plate Diet, her second book that dives more into inflammation. She hopes to launch her own athleisure wear clothing line by next year. She even hopes to open a doughnut store one day. Say what? “I love doughnuts. They are my favorite thing. For years, I thought I was healthy. I ate my vegetables. I worked out. I didn’t eat a ton of fast food, but I was always sick. Stomach pains, exhaustion, brain fog, joint pain. All of which were given some diagnosis by multiple doctors. Two years ago, my youngest son and I got extremely ill. Neither of us could do much of anything without being completely wiped out and in a ton of pain. We even started noticing extreme behaviors, anxiety, and more. It’s one thing for me to be sick, but seeing your child not even be able to go for a walk was the motivation I needed to make big changes. We found out that we had mold toxicity. A lot of illnesses that are related to this have similar symptoms, which is why we were often misdiagnosed. I slowly started making changes. I started small by replacing all of my toxic household items with nontoxic ones. I stopped using perfumes and

harsh chemicals on/in my body. We started eating whole foods every day and I stopped buying products that, if I couldn’t read the words on the back of the label, it didn’t go in my cart. It was hard to see changes as they were happening because they were small, but one day, my son was out walking and started running. He looks back at us and yells “Mommy, daddy! I can run and my legs don’t hurt anymore!” Cue the tears. It was then that I made the conscious decision to never go back to the life we had before. Is being “healthy” easy? No, it’s not, it takes a lot of hard work. I spend hours in the kitchen prepping and on my computer researching. Growing up in Collierville, Tennessee, townspeople believed Matthew Bretherick, owner of Mercantile 1858 and 1858 Candle Company, would grow up to be the mayor or a used car salesman. With his uncanny ability to connect with all people, Matthew has walked through life without much of a plan. “Luckily for most of my life, things have fallen into place.” And while this philosophy may not work for most, it has certainly worked well for Matthew, his teammates Kendra, Yaz, David, and regular shopper turned newest employee, Melinda. Now his work benefits 46 makers, ranging in age from 13 to 67 who supply Mercantile 1858 with “affordable products, curated blends of furniture, vintage finds, vintage-inspired and on-trend home decor and locally made gifts you won’t find elsewhere.” How Mercantile 1858 came to be is another “not planned but sometimes you just land in the perfect place” blessing. After working in a major retail store for 13 years and being overlooked for corporate positions, Matthew took a “staycation,” visiting a friend who owned a shop in Arrington. Being a busy time for his friend, Matthew pitched in and started selling. A month later, his friend called and offered Matthew an opportunity to work with her buying and selling. “In corporate, I wanted to be a buyer, merchandiser, do the visuals, all the things I focused on, but I also got in trouble for it in the corporate world.” Having been overlooked for a promotion, Matthew gave his two-week notice and started The Gentleman’s Stache in a 4x5 space set up in his friend’s store selling steamer trunks he found. Nine months later, Matthew took over the Arrington location, rebranded it as Mercantile 1858 (an homage to the year the strip was built), and now, six years later, Matthew has the original Arrington shop located at 4812 Murfreesboro Road as well as the Franklin location at 1137 West Main Street.

What makes Mercantile 1858 different is consignors have a space to showcase their handiworks and found treasures without a fee - makers earn money when something sells but do not pay a fee to have products displayed in the store. Unlike “booth” shops for makers, Mercantile 1858 displays items in vignettes around the store. It is not uncommon to find six or seven different vendor items grouped together in stunning displays around the shops. Approximately 50% of items in the shop are new and 50% are vintage items. COVID brought about many changes for small businesses like Mercantile 1858. Needing to pivot, Matthew and Kendra ramped up video walkthroughs of the shops on Instagram (@mercantile1858). This stronger online presence now accounts for approximately 15% of sales. When Southern Firefly candles, a vendor in the shop was sold, Matthew always “flying by the seat of my pants” decided to become a chandler. In the middle of the pandemic, with no previous experience, Matthew performed a Google search for “how to make candles,” watched numerous YouTube videos, ordered vessels from wholesalers, and after making 100 candles wrong, learned the hard way there is a science behind candle making. Luckily, Matthew has now mastered the art and is proudly offering 30 different scented 100% soy wax candles all hand-made by Matthew under the 1858 Candle Company brand (@1858candleco). Matthew and his fiancee, Cesar Lopez, are hoping to change the candle-making room in their home into a nursery for a child one day and the candle sales are helping to create a financially stable income to get the adoption process started. But COVID also brought about another big change. COVID claimed both of Matthew’s parents, who died just 12 days apart. Matthew, “Very passionate about people - to a fault,” decided to give back and created a special Cocoa + Mint candle to help fund scholarships in his parents’ CONTINUED >

I am huge at giving back - whether to random people - that is what I hope to do with Mom and Dad’s candles - to use my platform on social media to give back.” He sold out of his initial batch of 40 memorial candles in a week. “Shoppers supported us through a global pandemic, the passing of my parents, and orders for candles were sold out. People ordered candles, having never smelled them, to support our family foundation.” The Bretherick Memorial Fund awarded three $3,000 scholarships in 2021 and Matthew and his family hope to build upon and continue the fund for the foreseeable future.

A few days before Halloween 2019, several Nashville Predators were making their way down the hallway at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. With bright smiles on their faces and bags of goodies in tow, they were visiting that day to help brighten the spirits of many children who were not able to be home for Halloween. The Predators’ Foundation mission is to build philanthropic partnerships within the community to successfully leverage the unique assets and skills of the entire organization to improve the lives of youth and their families. The Foundation’s vision is to use their distinctive set of assets to support the youth and their families in the community that they call home. “We’ve always been fortunate to have good ties with the community and our fans in Nashville,” says Forward Colton Sissons. “Attending the Predators Foundation events and being able to help the community is a big part of what it means to be in this organization. It’s a real honor for us to be a part of this and help bring some happiness to the lives of others.” Colton adds, “The charity holiday party is probably one of the most rewarding things I’ve been involved with since starting my career here. It has been a bit different the last couple of years because of COVID, but it’s always fun to shop for the kids and see them open their gifts.” Defenseman Roman Josi agrees. “When I first got here, I learned that everyone in the organization takes a lot of pride in being involved in the community and helping people. The players love getting out in the Nashville community and the Predators Foundation does such a good job helping us make those connections. I have met so many amazing people and built friendships and relationships with people all over the community. I love doing any of the Foundation events but the ones that always stand out to me are any with Best Buddies,” says Roman. “They’re so much fun and always inspire me.” CONTINUED >

Predators players spending heartfelt time with children in our community is just one of the many ways the Foundation gives back. Rebecca King, the Foundation’s Vice President, Community Relations, explains. “The Predators Foundation gives out 2.5 million dollars per year and we have to self-raise. We put on golf tournaments, wine tastings, beer festivals, dinners, fashion shows, bowling tournaments, and host a clay shoot with Mike Fisher. All the money raised goes right back into our community.” She adds that since inception in 1998, the Preds Foundation has distributed over 20 million dollars to the middle Tennessee community. “We also highlight Hockey Fights Cancer in November, Hockey is for Everyone month in February, Pride month, Hispanic Heritage month, Military Salute

week, and a myriad of other initiatives also recognized by the entire NHL.” In addition, members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors select four organizations as Feature Charities. These charities receive a special awareness night at a Preds home game. They collect an item of need at the main entrances, accept donations, and have a platform to tell their story to fans. The Foundation’s 2021-2022 featured charities are Nashville Dolphins, Nashville Tree Foundation, Pinson Hospital Hospitality House, and Salvus Center. Rebecca notes that in addition to annual donations made to charities, the Foundation, in conjunction with SmileDirectClub, also awards SuperGrants, made specifically to organizations dedicated to helping individuals during times of transition. “Each season, we award $250,000 to four-five local non-profits

that are impacting the lives of others. Some of these organizations include Maple Built, Monroe Harding, Nashville Adult Literacy Council, and Retrieving Independence,” says Rebecca. “When a tragedy does strike, such as the 2020 tornado and Christmas bombing in downtown Nashville, or flooding in 2021, we pivot in a day to set up our arena as a command center or collect donations of supplies and funds. Thanksgiving 2020 we delivered turkey baskets with MNPD to families still impacted by the 2020 tornadoes. We are also focused on Waverly and ways to help as they rebuild over the next few years. We see what an amazing platform we have and leverage that as much as we can. Hometown ER Doctors Are Filling An Urgent Need In Franklin’s Healthcare Space ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS

On a typical day you’ll see walk-in medical clinics at practically every supermarket, pharmacy, and office park in Franklin. But what happens on that atypical day when you actually need that service? Where do you go for prompt treatment of an accidental injury, relentless congestion, or that concerning chest or abdominal pain? Physicians Urgent Care is a source that should be at the top of your list. Founded in 2011, Physicians Urgent Care (PUC) is the only walk-in clinic in the area that is locally owned by doctors who are formally trained in emergency medicine. They met while working in local emergency rooms and decided to open the clinic as a way to bridge the gap between the retail outlets and hospital emergency rooms. “If you have chest pains, other walk-in clinics will send you to the ER but we can determine if that’s even necessary,” says Dr. Nabil Boutros, a PUC founding partner. “We can determine quickly whether or not you need to be admitted. If you don’t, we can do everything that they’d do at the ER for a fraction of the cost.” PUC is designed with the patient in mind and if you walk -in moments before

closing time, PUC will take care of you for as long as it takes. As an Air Force veteran, Boutros is one of three partners with military experience. One of the others, Dr. Jason Rubino, who served in the Navy, says that it’s not unusual for military physicians to gravitate toward emergency medicine. “In general, the military mindset transitions to emergency medicine,” says Rubino. “You have to be able to react quickly under pressure.” Physicians Urgent Care employs physician’s assistants, at least one of the partners is on-call at all times, and the clinic recently added primary care to its scope of services. PUC offers flu shots and was one of the first in the area to offer Covid-19 vaccines and monoclonal antibody infusions. “We encourage the vaccine for all who are eligible but we respect the decisions of those who choose otherwise,” says Dr. Rubino. “We will treat anyone, regardless of their vaccination status.” There are two Physicians Urgent Care locations in Franklin and one in Brentwood. Selena Polgardy is a professional cosmetic and tattoo artist commended for her generosity and dedication to cancer patients. In addition to her permanent makeup offerings, she invented a luxury line, Glam by Selena Cosmetics. Being surrounded by family and friends battling and passing away from cancer has fueled Selena’s passion to give back to those struggling with side effects from cancer treatments. She took her talents from the makeup industry and has helped over 20 cancer survivors and warriors receive free permanent eyebrows, a procedure that can take 2 to 3 hours and requires a follow-up session. These individuals are nominated through Instagram giveaways on Glam by Selena’s account. Selena says, “It’s not just putting a free pair of brows on them. They’ll open up to me and I begin to be with them on their journey.”

Her brow services are not limited to women or a specific type of cancer. Men lose their brows too or may need to learn how to apply brows with brow pencils on themselves or on a significant other. Selena adds, “You can really put warmth back into people’s hearts. Most people don’t want to be looked at and treated like they’re going through cancer.” It’s a huge self-esteem boost for those who lost their brows, and also don’t have the time and energy to do them every day. She offers her permanent makeup services at several places in town including Golden Yeti Art Collective in downtown Franklin. Golden Yeti owner Jeff Barnard and artist Caitlyn Campbell do free areola tattoos for breast cancer survivors and welcomed Selena with open arms. After one of Selena’s biggest supporters passed away, it pushed Selena to not give up on growing her cosmetics line. Selena

says, “I locked myself in my mom’s house in Tennessee and then really worked on my products. I hustled and that’s how I got where I’m at now.” All of Selena’s cosmetics are free from any toxic, cancer-causing ingredients. Selena launched her cosmetics line, Glam by Selena, on December 4, 2021. Breast cancer survivor, Michelle Wilson (@sipstosugars), was the first to model Selena’s luxury lashes and eyebrow kits. Michelle says, “When I went through cancer, believe it or not, the HARDEST thing was losing my hair, eyebrows, eyelashes. I felt like I lost that special feeling of being female. You look in the mirror and it’s not you. When I would go out, I would put a wig and makeup on, and do whatever I could to not feel like a cancer patient.” Michelle goes on to say that Selena’s services may bring a small sense of normalcy to those going through treatment. During their 40 years of marriage, high school sweethearts Don and Jackie Gregory have done a lot - 20 years traveling with the carnival, raising five children, owner/operators of Henpeck Village Market, and for the past 10 years owner/operators of Simply Living Life. While the years have marched on, several things have remained constant - their love for each other, their family, their community, cooking, and gathering together to enjoy food that looks and tastes great. They also offer callahead out-of-this-world picnic baskets. Ever mindful of their losses at Henpeck Village Market, which Don refers to as “our greatest failure,” Don and Jackie appreciate where they are today. “This place we started from nothing and it’s doing well. We are grateful, especially after we walked through a hard place. With its impressive results combatting signs of aging, microneedling has become a sought-after trend in skincare. “As we age, collagen production decreases and skin damage becomes more visible,” says Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf, Medical Director of Franklin Skin and Laser. Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment for those looking to address signs of aging by rejuvenating the skin and improving textural imperfections.” This non-surgical treatment aids in improving many skin concerns that have to do with skin’s texture including wrinkles, fine lines, enlarged pores, and acne scarring, as well as aesthetic aspects like laxity, sun damage, stretch marks, and hyper-pigmentation. “Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that promote natural collagen production and cellular turnover through the body’s natural wound healing process,” explains Dr. Bengelsdorf. “During the treatment, an FDA-approved device is glided over the skin in specific patterns in the area of concern. This device uses sterile, incredibly small needles that penetrate the skin to jumpstart collagen production and signal the body to repair the treated area. Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate. “The design passed the wife test—everyone was happy to have it! We appreciate aesthetics and design, that’s been a key piece. It fits with a beautiful home and we are proud of that.” CONTINUED >

“What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”

Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together. advice #1 HAVE A STRONG, CLEAR, POWERFUL “WHY” FOR THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO MAKE. Changing behaviors, habits, and routines can be challenging, so it’s important to be crystal clear about why you want to make a given change. Ensure that your reason is strong and powerful enough to motivate you and help keep you on track. Your why will be the anchor that keeps you focused, grounded, and committed and the fuel that drives you forward when you feel like quitting.

GET LEVERAGE OVER YOURSELF. Be clear with yourself about the consequences that you’ll experience if you give up or quit. What will happen if things go back to how they were? What will happen if you don’t make the change you desire? When you are clear about the consequences that will result from giving up, it’s easier to find the strength and resolve to continue.

advice #3 MAKE SMALL, INCREMENTAL CHANGES THAT MOVE THE NEEDLE. Too often at this time of year, people resolve to do something that’s big and takes time. Then they get discouraged when they don’t see the results they want as quickly as they want. Small hinges swing big doors, so start by changing the small things that have a larger compounding effect. For example, someone might resolve to lose 30 pounds. That’s an end-goal rather than a clearly defined and manageable change. A stronger way to frame that resolution would be to commit to walking at least 15 minutes per day, or to drink one less soda.

HABIT STACK. Habit stacking is when you add a new action to your already existing routine. For example, if one of your resolutions is to learn Spanish, you could play language videos while you’re getting ready in the morning. You’re already in the bathroom getting ready, so watching the videos moves the needle but doesn’t add any time to your existing routine.

advice #5 GET AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY. Even the best of us have days where we need a gentle nudge. Setting regular check-ins with someone who will hold you to your commitments, not accept your excuses, encourage you, and celebrate you will help you show up for yourself even when you don’t feel like it.

advice #6 SHOW YOURSELF GRACE. There’s no benefit to blame, shame, or guilt, so while you can acknowledge that you dropped the proverbial ball, the important thing is to not beat yourself up over it. Pick yourself back up, dust yourself off, recalibrate your resolve, and double down on your commitment to yourself. Then take a deep breath and keep going. You’ve got this!
