barbecues, outdoor fun and family vacations. In this summer issue, you'll read about golfing, fireworks, BBQ ribs, cocktails, celebrating our country's independence, and so much more! If those stories don't scream summer, then I don't know what does. Plus, you get a preview of what to expect at Pilgrimage this year. So this letter is short, just like summer. But may it serve as a reminder to take a breath, get some sun, and enjoy the grassy outdoors before the cold comes back to Franklin and it's time to bundle up again.

PLAN YOUR MEALS WITH THE FOOD NANNY

d i n ner w it h a side of ka mut ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED WHAT IS KAMUT YOU ASK? According to Lizi Heaps, The Food Nanny, “It’s the most incredible flour in every way. It’s your all-perfect flour. It even has protein in it! Everything tastes better using it.” Lizi and her mom, who started The Food Nanny 20 years ago discovered kamut flour during a European vacation, and have since partnered with the Montana farmer who grows it. “The climate of Montana from the soil to the wind is the best place for growing kamut.” Lizi, who calls herself the junior food nanny, took over the business from her mom about 3-1/2 years ago. “I was always the one to be in the kitchen with my mom and was obsessed with cooking. So really, it’s been my passion too. I wanted to grow up and be just like my mom. My mom created this most natural setting of the day for families to bond. At the dinner table. It was magical. And that’s all I ever wanted to be.” She continues, “My mom wrote her cookbooks, mealplanned, raised seven kids. That was her whole dinner philosophy – how to grocery shop every two weeks – how to meal plan – and she was constantly asked, ‘What do you do exactly? You need to write a book.’ And so The Food Nanny was born. “I’m trying to encourage even one person to get in the kitchen and make something yummy. The hardest part about dinner is trying to figure out what to make. We make it so easy. My mom met with a nutritionist years ago who told her you’re never supposed to eat red meat back to back or pasta back to back. But people get in these ruts and just make the same thing. That’s why we have our theme nights. Every night you’re getting something different. It helps you get excited about the food. And I love food!” TheFoodNanny.com

TOM SEALS + FOUNDER, PRESIDENT, AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH GOD’S WORD FOR WARRIORS

Tom Seals joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17, just 10 days after graduating from Hume Fogg High School in Nashville. He served in the Marines from 1957-1960 in Okinawa, Japan, then worked for several years for a U.S. government agency in Europe, traveling around the world on several classified missions. This dedicated service to his country shaped Tom in a way he never knew was possible, and realized his mission in life was to serve former veterans who needed help finding meaning in civilian life. After completing his service and returning to Nashville, Tom was a 28-year professor of undergraduate Bible courses at Lipscomb University, where he taught his class, “Faith and Culture: God’s Word For Warriors.”

The next chapter in Tom’s life led him to founding God’s Word For Warriors in 2018, a non-profit organization “committed to serving the spiritually wounded, emotionally distressed, and broken-hearted by providing peer-based discipleship through a series of faith-based courses, programs and events.” He says, “The organization is not about converting people to Christianity, but to help them shape their lives and find solutions to their problems. It’s the most meaningful thing I’ve done in my life.” Tom is also a published author of four books – Proverbs: Wisdom for All Ages, Sermon on the Mount for Modern Living, The Quest for Spiritual Maturity, and God’s Word for Warriors. “Don’t be afraid to follow your heart, even when it’s pounding like crazy and feels like it will explode,” says Bree Jaxson. “I always knew I wanted to serve our country and do my part to keep America the ‘Land of the Free,”’ adds the recently promoted Deputy Commander for Cyber Space Operations for the Texas Air National Guard. “I had the most amazing mentors in high school JROTC, and realized I wanted to be part of something greater than myself.” Bree has served in the United States Air Force for the past 10 years noting, “I am so honored to have met and fought alongside some of the bravest people in the world. I worked hard to become an Officer and now a Captain, and am truly grateful for

this career. Serving as Deputy Commander holds a lot of weight and responsibility, especially as we move further into the Cyber Security Threat environment.” Music has always been Bree’s lifelong dream. Her first single of 2021, “Make Me Hate You,” received critical acclaim including a Spotify playlist with the Academy of Country Music. Her newest single, “Country Heart, City Roots,” is already gaining traction with press and radio. Says Bree, “Music has always been there for me in my happiest and darkest times. Writing and creating gave me an outlet and if my music can be a guide for people to get through a situation, that is all I ever wanted.” BreeJaxson.com

CLUB,

LOCATED IN FRANKLIN, OFFERS A PICTURESQUE 27-HOLE GOLF COURSE THAT CAN BE ARRANGED IN A MYRIAD OF WAYS TO KEEP PLAYERS ON THEIR TOES. “We have the advantage of using our three nine-hole courses to make three 18-hole courses,” says PGA Director of Golf, Sean P. Wells. “We can build a tee sheet that can fit nearly five more hours of tee times than an 18-hole golf course. It also keeps the members from feeling stale, playing the same course repeatedly.” Here, Sean gives players tips for having an enjoyable and safe round of golf in the summer heat: + Play early in the day. It’s the best way to get in a round before the temperature reaches peak, especially if you’re an "everyday" golfer, since playing day after day will take its toll on your energy.

46

Franklin Lifestyle | July 2021

+ Stay hydrated. Hydration is the number one key to being safe in the summer heat. Drink water before arriving at the course and have water ready for your round. Carry a Yeti thermal cup with ice that you can pour your water into throughout the round. + Protect yourself with sunblock. Focus especially on the ears and nose, but also those areas that have not yet been exposed to the sun. Technology is great, and the heavy cotton shirts of the past are long gone. There is so much lightweight clothing available that will keep the sweat visibility to a minimum, feel better for your swing, and also protect you from the sun's rays. Also wear light colors and headwear when you play. Wide brim hats are very popular and offer the most coverage. + Conserve energy whenever possible. Walking is how the game was meant to be played, but walkers should be smart. You should ride in a cart on days of extreme heat, or if playing every day, consider walking every other day or alternating between walking and riding nine holes. Walking under an umbrella also offers great protection, and cart drivers can be smart by parking in the shade at every opportunity. Play fast! The quicker the round, the safer you will be. B COOL DRINKS FOR HOT SPOT

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS IT’S FINALLY SUMMER IN THE SOUTH. We’ve dug ourselves out of the snow and ice, and knocked off a few springtime frosts to get to this glorious season, and what better way to keep cool in the sunshine and warm temperatures than with a refreshing, summer drink? Some people like to enjoy them by the pool as they’re catching some rays. Some people like to enjoy them floating down the Harpeth River when they’re not on the paddle. And some people like to enjoy them with their favorite people around a patio table as the fireflies twinkle in the yard. Most everyone has a special way they prefer to enjoy a summertime beverage, and Franklin has offerings for every fashion. Whether it’s wine, beer or cocktails you’re looking for, dozens of delightful options are just around the corner.

Having grown up in Williamson Country, Kimberly has been on Larkspur Farms, lovingly named for her horse, for almost 20 years. An animator by trade, the hives in her bee village are impeccably painted, almost stealing the buzz from the bees. Kimberly’s hives are all natural. Aside from the lack of chemicals, she won’t give them sugar water. And she’s as hands off as possible for the simple reason that its been incredibly successful. She had posed a gentle and thoughtful question to herself, “What would happen if I let them be bees?” Near the bee village is a buckwheat field and its close enough to a grove of persimmon both of which can be determined in the honey but are not the sole source the bees seek out. CONNECTING WITH THE EARTH ON LOCAL WORKING FARMS (CONTINUED)

Being a professional photographer, Ann will on occasion coach those interested or lend her creative eye. A very humble Ann can be a guide on lighting and share her knowledge and experience. Having the keen eye she does, Ann plants sunflowers each year for clients to enjoy. Future plans will see their son, Bobby, join the family on South 40 Farms as it continues to be the perfect scene-creating venue. South-40.com Often people’s true callings are found when they aren’t looking or by fate. That’s how Mason Grove Farm came to fruition, or as co-owner Angie Lentz likes to say, she and her husband Scott became “accidental entrepreneurs” by focusing on and following their ministry. A woman blazing her own trails and full of life, Angie believes nothing is really an accident and credits her loving husband Scott for being “the string to my kite. We’re always dreaming together.” In the summer of 2020, it was time for a change. Always mission and music minded, Angie tried to make her motivation to follow the question she asks everyone else; “what lights you up?” Having always homeschooled their three children, the Lentz's are experts at creating spaces and items specifically tailored to wants and needs. It was time to create their own company, “make a difference in the industry,” stand behind a brand that is mission minded, music minded and home minded. Angie wanted to be able to provide “all the pretty things” but cleanly and with integrity and purpose. Mason Grove focuses on family, whether that be allowing more time with family for employees or having an environment where employees feel like family. Just outside of Columbia, Angie and Scott want Mason Grove to be a place where people come for community where everyone has a seat at the table and people come to encounter the things that matter and feel welcome. Their vision reaches far beyond what Mason Grove is today and will extend to large events and family focused gatherings. A lifestyle brand that has a nostalgic and apothecary feel, the clean products focus on skin and the new baby line, natural items for your puppy and home décor. Very much a farm to table quality feel, Mason Grove wants to build a legacy. Focusing on heritage has inspired the spirit of the products and their spa-like effect. story about a woman named Charlotte who was abandoned as an infant on a doorstep in Franklin. Haunted by unanswered questions and an unrelenting desire for roots, she purchases a dilapidated Victorian home near historic downtown and sets out to solve the mystery of her birth. “When I finished the novel, I learned about the Janice Keck Literary Awards, offered through the Williamson County Public Library. The award had a fiction division, and the prize was a complete publishing package. So I buckled down, edited the first draft myself, and then sent it off to an editor before submitting it to the contest.” Katie’s manuscript ended up winning and was published under the library’s imprint, Academy Park Press. “The reception has been fantastic, especially since it’s set in Franklin, and everyone loves Franklin!” It has created even more interest in the historic homes of our charming city. “My all-time favorite historic house in downtown Franklin is the Watson House on 3rd Avenue South. The mansard roof practically drips with drama, and it captures my imagination every time I pass it. The house was designed by Hugh Cathcart Thompson. He is the same architect who designed the Ryman. I also love all the houses on West Main. Throughout my novel, one of the main

“Writing became a hobby for me, and I began to blog and dabble in fiction. I love writing purely for the sake of writing. It’s a form of therapy for me, an escape from the humdrum of daily life. Writing allows me to dream, to travel anywhere, to be anyone, to do anything. It gives me something to think about while I’m stuck in traffic, doing chores, etc. I map out stories, build characters, brainstorm plot twists, create new worlds. It’s great fun! “My blog “Faithfully Organized” began as a hobby, an excuse to write about my other favorite hobby: organizing! Tidiness has always come naturally to me, and my friends and family often ask me for tips. Since I enjoy it so much, I decided to start an organizing/cleaning blog." In addition to organizing, Katie loves history and historic preservation is one of the things she loves about Franklin. Thanks to groups like The Heritage Foundation and men like Robert Hicks and Rick Warwick, preservation is valued here. “Far too often, homes of historic significance are torn down in the name of progress. Brick by brick, our country’s history is being lost to the bulldozer. The mindset in Franklin is different, and the results speak for themselves.” Her family’s favorite place to visit is Franklin’s historic downtown district. "During the summer, we love to get ice cream at Sweet CeCe’s and listen to live music in the square. My kids love to explore the Williamson County Museum in the Archives

In 2007, the singer/songwriter began working with the Musicians on Call program, playing music bedside for hospital patients. He went on to play at VA hospitals, for the Wounded Warriors organization, and for the Melodic Caring Project, singing via video for children who were quarantined, too ill to have friends or family visit in their rooms.“Everything about the connection of music hit me harder,” he says of these efforts, “and I thought, ‘How can I be helpful, and reach out in a more real way?’ Songs have become a bridge, a way for me to reach outside myself and into other people’s lives. My mission now is to connect with people, to still have fun, but to have my intention be more outwardly based, and from a place of giving and service.” A recent loss of his own, the passing of his grandmother, informs many of the songs on his seventh album, My New Moon. But he notes, the album is as much about other people’s stories as it is his own. Photo Credit: Brantley Gutierrez

Deeply inspired by punk music, brothers Matt and Brad Shultz began playing music in highschool with fellow students Jared Champion and Daniel Tichenor and rounded out the band by adding Nick Bockrath and Matthan Minster. Shortly after forming the band, they made the bold move to London to begin their career. Tucker continues to inspire artists today. Born in Seminole, Texas, Tanya had her first country hit, the classic “Delta Dawn,” at the age of 13. Since that auspicious beginning, she has become one of the most admired and influential artists in country music history, amassing 23 Top 40 albums and a stellar string of 56 Top 40 singles, ten of which reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard country charts. Tanya is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two CMAs, two ACMs and three CMT awards. In 2020, Tanya received two GRAMMY® Awards for Best Country Album: While I’m Livin’ and Best Country Song: “Bring My Flowers Now.” In the fall of 2020, Fantasy Records released Tanya Tucker-Live From The Troubadour on October 16, the one-year anniversary of Tanya’s historic, standing-room only set from which it originates. As someone who’s been center stage for more than 50 years, Tanya is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the album directly to The Troubadour. Photo Credit: Derrik Kupish

The national parks invite us to stretch our imaginations—and our legs—and explore the great outdoors. This list of national parks just scratches the surface of the natural wonders to wonderlands to discover, but it includes eight of the most stunning national parks in the United States.

1. ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK Rocky Mountain National Park includes majestic mountains, abundant wildlife, incredible hiking trails and so much more. Popular activities include fishing, hiking, riding horses and bikes and enjoying the spectacular views. Wintertime brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. Watching wildlife, such as bighorn sheep, elk, moose and mule deer, is a popular activity as well.

2.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite National Park boasts giant sequoia trees, breathtaking waterfalls, vast meadows and more. The park is home to unique rock formations like El Capitan, Half Dome and Glacier Point. Gaze in awe at Yosemite’s thousands of waterfalls, including Yosemite Falls, Ribbon Fall and Wapama Falls.

3. YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres include colorful hot springs, awe-inspiring waterfalls, fascinating mudpots, explosive geysers, diverse wildlife and more. It is home to more hot springs and geysers than anywhere else on Earth. The oldest and largest herd of bison in the country lives at Yellowstone, as well as elk, wolves and grizzly bears.

4.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK Bryce Canyon National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is home to the world’s largest concentration of hoodoos on Earth. With its fascinating landscape composed of hoodoos, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters and whimsical limestone rock formations, a visit to Bryce Canyon is often likened to a visit to another planet. This stunning landscape, formed by wind, water and snow, draws hikers, rock climbers, photographers, stargazers and cross-country skiers.

5.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Glacier National Park is located on the border of Canada and the United States and is often referred to as the “Crown of the Continent.” Visitors will find more than 700 glacial lakes and many hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Going-to-the-Sun Road, known as one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the country, is a paved, two-lane highway that divides the park into east and west regions.

6

ZION NATIONAL PARK Zion National Park’s colorful sandstone cliffs, lush plateaus covered in pine and junipers, narrow canyons, the Virgin River, plus seeps, springs and waterfalls are just some of the scenic wonders here. One of Zion’s most popular hikes is known as the Narrows, the slimmest section of Zion Canyon. Other popular attractions include the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, Angels Landing, Observation Point and Canyon Overlook Trail.

7. GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park spans 310,000 acres and towers above the Jackson Hole Valley. The Teton Mountains, the youngest in the Rockies, are reflected majestically on the surfaces of six pristine lakes and the Snake River. Experienced climbers can summit the 13,770foot Grand Teton, and long-distance hikers can take the Paintbrush Canyon-Cascade Canyon Loop for impressive views of the mountain.

8.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK This UNESCO World Heritage Site is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and 1 mile deep. The South Rim is home to Grand Canyon Village and Bright Angel Trail. The West Rim is home to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the edge of a cliff. The North Rim is the most remote access point, allowing visitors to experience the park firsthand through intense hiking and backpacking and thrilling river rafting.

Hopefully, this list has inspired you to start planning your next adventure. Whether the mountains are calling, your inner daredevil needs to be satiated or a scenic road trip is in order, America’s national parks are begging to be explored! 100 Franklin Lifestyle | July 2021
