FRANKLIN'S DAVIS HOUSE RECEIVES $36K GRANT Davis
Child
Advocacy
Center received a grant from The Healing
Trust,
which
awarded
funds totaling $784,100 in its most recent grant cycle. Davis House’s grant was for $36,000 and will be used for general operational costs. The mission of Davis House Child Advocacy Center is to provide investigative, advocacy, family support, and therapeutic services to children who have experienced sexual or significant physical abuse or some other traumatic event, as well as trauma informed community education, designed to guide our towns and civic spaces to be safer and more resilient for everyone. Child abuse does not just affect the child. Once disclosure is made, the entire family is in crisis. Our dual goal: to treat the child and the family as they heal from the trauma of abuse; and to educate caregivers and our collaborative partners in order to better protect children. Davis House served 530 new children last year in Williamson, Hickman, Lewis, and Perry counties.

IT’S BEEN SAID THAT PERFECTIONISM IS A PRODUCTIVITY NIGHTMARE. Mary Lubel of Almost Perfect Cakes would tend to agree. When asked where she got the name from, she says laughingly, “Honestly, because my cakes aren’t perfect! I didn’t want people to get the impression they were going to order something and it was going to be perfect. A lot of people send me photos and say ‘Can you make this?’ Yes, I can, but I do it as ME. They do it as them. So it’s almost perfect.” The
former
social
worker
from
California
launched her business in April of 2020. “I made a cake for my friend’s son’s birthday and people became interested in having me make their cakes. And it started from there. Then I got started on Instagram.” She continues, “I always loved baking. I did cookies and cupcakes but nothing custom. Then I did my sister and sister-in law’s baby shower cakes.” And the rest is history. Mary’s favorite? “I do love making kids cakes because they get so excited over them. But I try to make each cake special to the person. A favorite color, stuff they like.” And her least favorite? “Fondant is really tedious at times. Sometimes I’m up till 3:00 AM playing with fondant!”

Franklin Lifestyle | February 2021
Mary’s Baking Advice: 1. Cakes are easier to assemble when they are firm. Tightly wrap and place in the freezer for at least 20 minutes before you plan to stack and frost.
2. To achieve smooth sides you need to get all the air bubbles out of the frosting. After the frosting comes together in the mixer, stir it with a wooden spoon or spatula to release the air.
3. Believe in yourself. Confidence is the first step to making something amazing.

With 20+ years of music and performances under his belt, Roger sat down to talk about his career, his new music and what’s up next. FRANKLIN LIFESTYLE: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT ROGER DAY? WHO IS HE? Roger Day: Roger Day is a children's singer-songwriter. I have lived in Franklin for over 20 years. I travel all over the country and perform for schools, libraries, theaters and professionals. I’ve pretty much played everywhere from California to New York. I love writing joyful music that brings families together and encourages kids to use their imagination. FL: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DOING THAT? RD: The children's music part really dates back to me being a camp counselor at a summer camp in Birmingham, Alabama. I really learned the power of music to bring people together and to bring children together. I started writing songs for my nieces and nephews for Christmas. I would write a song for

AFTER WORKING IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY THAT GOD HAD OTHER PLANS FOR HER. She has used her gifts of art and formulating scents to create a luxury fragrance brand, Wright Home Collection. This collection was inspired by her family’s special legacy. Wright’s grandfather helped lay the South American pipeline. He documented his time there with photographs. Wright wanted to bring these photos to life by using scents in her Iron candle. She believes that scents are memory makers and wanted to create a masculine and distinguished fragrance to place with the photos. These luxury candles are hand batched and poured in Franklin.

Not only does her collection carry candles but notecards and incense as well. Wright Home Collection will be expanding in the new year with apparel. Her work has been featured in Alyssa Rosenheck’s lifestyle book, The New Southern. In addition to her luxury candle lines, Wright is a very well-known artist in Nashville and has loaned her paint brush to many projects including a mural at local charity, Brett’s Barn and a mural inside of 12 South’s Emerson Grace that went viral on Pinterest! Wright will also be launching a candle this spring, Sweet Betty, to honor her mom. When Wright is not painting or working on Wright Home Collection, she loves to gather friends together on the golf course. She’s even found more success on the greens when she uses her father’s clubs. Through family, experience and open doors, Wright has created a life of sharing her artistic gifts with the community. CHANGING THE WORLD ONE SMILE AT A TIME IT ISN’T EVERY DAY THAT YOU’RE SITTING AT LUNCH WITH COWORKERS AND LOOK DOWN AT YOUR PHONE TO SEE A FACETIME CALL FROM BRITTANY AND JASON ALDEAN. But that’s exactly what happened to Shannon Gravelle as the winner of Brittany’s Ultimate Smile and Glam Giveaway contest. The digital marketing manager of a solar company who resides in Greenville, SC said she was speechless. “I feel like I blacked out a little bit. I was freaking out. I couldn’t form words. After the call, I was like, ‘I hope they know how excited I was – I don’t remember what I said.’” Dr. Matt Kasiar, a cosmetic dentist, partnered with Brittany to make this happen. "I’ve always wanted to do a smile giveaway to help people. I was introduced to Brittany through some mutual friends and she has such a large following and so many people that look up to her. I thought what a great opportunity to give away a smile and use her platform to do that. I had done some work on her best friend and that opened up the opportunity for me to ask her to partner up. She was on board from day one." Brittany adds, "It was an absolute no-brainer. We teamed up and added the glam makeover to give a whole experience to somebody. Dr. Kasiar is such a kind and giving dentist and he always wants to help people."

CHANGING THE WORLD ONE SMILE AT A TIME (CONTINUED)
She reveals, "We got over 1,000 video entries. We didn’t really expect the response that we received. It’s been crazy. Dr. Kasiar and his wife Brooke shared their top 20 entrants with me. All of them hit home. You just realize how important a smile is to somebody’s confidence and their relationships. Some people never dated before, some never had friends in school, and some were just bullied all the time.” Brittany adds that while they chose Shannon as the ultimate winner of the glam giveaway, she and Jason decided there were other applicants they felt compelled to help. They chose an additional six applicants and personally paid for their smile to be fixed by Dr. Kasiar as well. “When you know something is going to impact someone’s life so positively, why wouldn’t you do it if you can?" Dr. Kasiar explains, "My responsibility was to make sure I got through every one of those 1,000 videos. It took me two or three weeks to watch them all. It was my entire day, between patients, after work, laying in bed. They had stories you can’t believe – what these people have gone through. There were a lot of people in need. When I gave Brittany the 20 videos and asked her if she’d had it nailed down yet, she said she had it nailed down to 19! Even Jason got involved due to the emotion involved in watching those videos." So what was it about Shannon that led her to the ultimate prize? "Initially, I didn’t know what I was looking for in a winner. I was just watching with an open heart and open mind. Everybody’s story was so different. That’s what made it very difficult to choose just one. Shannon was so intelligent, so well spoken and she wanted to have a future in public speaking but wasn’t confident enough. That’s what broke our hearts about it. Her future is so bright and she has teeth that she’s not confident about. We wanted to give her that because we know the sky’s the limit for her. We knew there was something really special about her," answers Brittany.
42
Franklin Lifestyle | February 2021
Shannon asserts, "I was already a happy, positive smiley person but everyone says since this has happened, my confidence has gone up a bit. They'd say, 'I don’t know why you don’t like your teeth. I like your smile.' But I had to feel it. It has already and will continue to change my life. And everybody involved in the process has been so helpful since day one and it’s such a good feeling to feel like everyone else is excited too. I feel very very lucky. I know how badly I wanted something like this. Everything fell into place and was meant to be." Dr. Kasiar wants the goodwill to continue. "Throughout the whole process of the giveaway we kept seeing so many people in need of dental treatment, but either couldn’t afford it or didn’t have access to it. Luckily, we were able to help a total of 7 individuals and change their lives by giving them their smile back. We wanted to help everyone but just didn’t have the means to do it. So in order to help even more people get access to the dental treatment they need, I founded Second Chance Smiles which is a non-profit organization that will help raise money for this cause. Our hope is that we can transform many more lives through this organization by raising the money necessary to give people their smile and confidence back." The Practice 3991 Carothers Parkway Franklin ThePracticeTN.com Dr. Kasiar and Brittany would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous donations: Biohorizons Implants, Hancock Dental Arts, Kemp Rice Orthodontics, and Midsouth Dental Lab.

SECOND STORY
OUT OF TRAGEDY AND HEARTACHE, MATTIE WOLF WAS GIVEN THE GIFT OF PAINT. After struggling with infertility and losing her last chance of having a natural birth, Mattie asked her husband to bring home paints and a canvas, whatever he could find, while she stayed home with their two napping daughters. They had just moved into a new house in Franklin and she couldn’t find anything she liked to fill the empty walls. So she decided she would do it herself. In the comfort of their second floor bedroom, a canvas over a beach towel propped against her dresser, she-

Her contemporary abstract and fluid paintings reflect the beauty of Tennessee, and Lake Michigan where she spent her summers growing up, and her faith and patriotism. A couple years passed and she finally mustered the courage to sell her paintings. “Second Story Art” seemed like the only logical business name. In the literal aspect, she began painting on the second story of her home, but more importantly, painting has given her a second chance at hope. Mattie says, “I was so heartbroken that we weren’t going to be able to have any more kids that I think God literally put paint in front of me and said ‘I’m not giving you that gift, but I am giving you this gift. This is what I want you to do; this is your story and use this to bless people.’” And so she has.

LIZARD THICKET SHOWS US HOW
IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY TO DRESS FOR TENNESSEE'S WEATHER. Most especially, as winter turns to spring and you wake up to a frosty 35 degree morning only to have it be a sunny 60 degrees by noon. It can be tough to plan your outfits. One day it's jeans and boots and the next day it's a floral dress. It's confusing! So we asked Kathleen Shore, owner of Lizard Thicket how to help make the transition from winter to spring a little easier. Her advice: layer! "The transition from winter to spring is kind of fun because it's still a little bit crisp and cool out, so you're able to layer things. Layering is one of the funnest styles because 52

you can really put like an exquisite little dress with a leather or jean jacket and mix up the style because you're cold. You can go in to more fun, soft colors that are more flowery just to bring out the life that spring is coming. A short corduroy skirt with a light sweater and cute booties is a really easy thing to do. Any of these looks can go from a daytime in to a casual evening." Shore is the new owner of the Cool Springs Lizard Thicket who saw the ownership opportunity as a "new avenue to inspire women in their beauty. An outer expression of their inner beauty. It's a lot of fun!" Shore and her husband were the former owners of a CONTINUED >

THE PAULA HINEGARDNER GROUP’S TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME THIS SPRING! Tour your own home. Walk through your home with the eyes of a potential buyer. Look for possible small improvements, such as painting a wall or adding f resh-cut flowers, and take out personal items that may deter buyers f rom envisioning themselves in your home. Stage your home inside and out. Buyers are looking for a safe, warm, and welcoming first impression. A little bit of landscaping or sprucing up curb appeal can make all the difference in a buyer’s opinion of your home. Adapt to changing times. 89% of buyers desire energy efficiency in their new home. Energy Star-qualified windows, washing machines and dishwashers will limit utility bills, minimize water use and draw in buyers to your property. Don’t over-upgrade. Quick home improvements have proven to be more beneficial than full-blown makeovers. A huge project will likely cost you more than you will get in return on the sale. A fresh coat of paint, new cabinet hardware and a repaired leaky faucet are some ways to demonstrate pristine home maintenance, while keeping costs low. Light it up! Buyers do not want a dull, mundane home, so open up the curtains, clean the lampshades and provide potential buyers with a bright and radiant visit. Maximize natural light and add incandescent bulbs to incite positive thoughts in potential buyers.

ALEX KOCH’S SMILE IS AS BIG AS A BASKETBALL COURT. As a noticeably gregarious and social youth, the 17-year-old lights up roomfuls of people with his grin and irresistible laughter. He’s quick to grab other’s hands to share intimate moments, doesn’t hesitate to join them in walks and definitely is always ready for a game of hoops. ...He just can’t verbalize any words he wants to share. Each day, Alex deals with a genetic disorder that only 1 in 70,000 people around the world have. Called Sanfilippo syndrome, or also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), it’s named after Dr. Sylvester Sanfilippo, one of the U.S. doctors who described the condition in 1963. It’s a rare, autosomal-recessive enzyme storage disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It’s caused by a buildup of large sugar molecules, which essentially manifest as protein overload in one’s body. When those types of subcells are working properly, they break down and remove fats and sugars from cells. This condition is a progressive, metabolic disorder that eventually causes fatal brain damage. There isn’t yet a known cure, and the average lifespan of those experiencing it is 17 years.

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED) Alex Koch in 2014 when he received an outdoor basketball court from Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee.
Alex’s Nashville-based parents, Matt and Julie Koch, began to worry when they started noticing cognitive, verbal and behavioral developmental delays when Alex was 3-5 years young. After years of doctors’ appointments, therapies, an incorrect diagnosis, and watching their son regress, they eventually learned Alex had this syndrome as he turned 10 years old. Matt says they got around the previous brickwall of unknowns when they finally discovered a Yale Medical Center university study in which Alex could participate. “Part of the challenge was that not a lot of doctors had seen this disease to even recognize it. But after the Yale diagnosis results, we were able to connect with experienced people who could help,” says Matt. “Although Alex can’t verbalize, people say they always feel good interacting with him. We are blessed every day that we have Alex in our lives.” WISHING ON A COURT When Julie and Matt were approached by a Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee nonprofit volunteer, they quickly realized what might make a wonderful difference for Alex: an outdoor basketball court. Alex had been playing with a basketball since he was 2 years old, recalls Matt. The court became a reality in 2014, and was a complete surprise to Alex. That court allowed Alex to play sports with his brother, Jaxson, and anyone else who will take up a ball. Julie says the now 5-foot-11-inch Alex uses the court constantly. “He’s probably gone through 50 basketballs over the past six years,” chuckles Matt. “Make-A-Wish is simply life-changing for the youths they assist and their families,” says Matt, who decided to give back to the organization by serving as one of its board of directors for the past five years.

INFLUENCER KYLE BOEN SHARES HIS CREATIVE PASSION THROUGH STAYFOXX STUDIOS
ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY CAMERON HINKLE
Q: WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START STAYFOXX STUDIOS? A: I have always had a passion for art and interior design. I've been painting and drawing for years, and recently began posting both art and interiors on my lifestyle Instagram page, @stayfoxx. Once more people began asking about how they could purchase my pieces and inquiring on what would look best in their homes, my partner and I thought it would be best to make a separate page and website to house this side of Stayfoxx. Q: WHERE DOES THE NAME STAYFOXX COME FROM? A: Years ago, as I was online searching for inspiration for a piece I was working on, I came across an image of a fox dressed up to the nines. He had glasses, a top hat and tuxedo. He just seemed to encompass such style and confidence and I thought, 'That is exactly how I want to feel.' So Stayfoxx was born. The extra X is just for looks - ha!

ROMANCE IS IN THE AIR AND ALSO IN THE KITCHEN

THE KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF THE HOME, SO IT’S IMPORTANT FOR IT TO BE A SPACE THAT IS WELCOMING AND WARM. A place where couples can share ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
a glass of wine and reconnect after a busy day. Eat, Gather, Love can help make this room everything a homeowner can want while keeping costs reasonable. “I loved the name - it just spoke to me,” says Pamela Jordan, who owns the Nashville franchise along with her husband, Gary. “At this point in my life, I’ve been a consumer, a designer, a wife, and a mom, and this was something I could do to help people.” With their combined 15 years of home improvement experience, Eat, Gather, Love was the perfect fit for the couple. “Our tagline is ‘Reimagine Your Kitchen,’ so we prefer to go in and use the same footprint that the customer has to keep costs down,” says Pamela. “It’s where we go first thing in the morning and the last place in the evening. It’s my goal to create a kitchen that makes them feel good about their home.”

Modern farmhouse
1 - TRADITIONAL KITCHEN The homeowners wanted something newer, brighter and cleaner, so the existing cabinets were painted white, smaller cabinets were stacked above those, and new hardware was added. A quartz countertop, with a spectacular backsplash, was installed for durability and easy maintenance. The light fixture was refreshed with new paint, and a new sink and faucet completed the update. All in all, it’s a romantic and lovely space to spend time together. 2 - MODERN FARMHOUSE These homeowners wanted more storage, and the wife’s favorite color is blue. So the doors on the existing cabinets were replaced, and the bottom cabinets were painted a navy blue for a contrast to the white cabinets above. On top of these, stacked cabinets were added for more storage. Two small cabinets above the sink were replaced with floating wood shelves for easier access to items. White subway tile, quartz countertops and a barn sink finished it off. Next to this area, the refrigerator was enclosed and the original cabinets above were moved forward for easier accessibility. Stacked cabinets were also added on top. It’s now a great place for the couple to share a morning cup of coffee before starting the day.

3 - CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN A couple wanted an updated kitchen, so larger shaker-style doors were installed for a full overlay. The simple subway tile backsplash adds a dramatic contrast to the black window. A two-tone color palette was also incorporated by adding gray and creating an intimate space for two to dine under new drop pendant lights that emit a soft glow. 4 - MODERN KITCHEN Another couple desired something more modern and interesting, and also wanted a vented hood. So the cabinets above the sink were taken out and replaced with shiplap and floating shelves. The existing cabinets were transformed into flat-front cabinets with larger hardware, and subway tile and quartz countertops completed the look. It’s now a fun place to cook, and even dance!
