The Music - Saturday night’s live music is what really makes the winery special. Bands, some bluegrass, some Americana, set up in the pavilion and play out across the grounds for visitors to enjoy along with their wine and their loved ones. Some Saturdays, crowds get pretty big, and an extra wine tasting table is set up outside to accommodate everyone who wants a taste. If you forget to bring snacks that evening, don’t worry. The winery sells light snacks such as cheese and crackers. They also feature a vendor who makes crepes on Saturday nights that Phil says are “to die for.” They take a short break from live music during the winter, but it will be back to fill the air as soon as spring comes back around in April. Pickers Creek Winery is one of the best outings you can make in a year like 2020. Of course, they have made adjustments where necessary in light of the pandemic. Wine tastings are being held outside, crowds have been lighter, and some of their larger annual events didn’t make it to fruition. However, none of that takes away from the opportunity they afford you to spend a relaxing day out in the fresh air soaking up nature and a bottle of your favorite Pickers Creek Wine. BEFORE,” SAYS LISA PATTERSON, A DOMESTIC ABUSE
DANIELLE DEL VALLE
SURVIVOR WHO WANTS HER RECOVERY TO BE AN INSPIRATION FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED VIOLENCE. That was not the case in June when Dr. Mary Lynn Moran solicited responses for a free non-surgical facelift makeover for those who submitted the best narrative describing why they deserved such an award. “We weren’t thinking domestic violence,” said Dr. Mary Lynn Moran, facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. “When I saw Lisa’s story, there was no question she was the one.” Lisa’s story is a dark one. She spent many years in an abusive relationship. She suffered severe facial disfigurement, lost her teeth, and by tattoo, her abuser branded her with his name. All permanent injuries impossible for her to recover from on her own. The contest, though not originally intended to target domestic abuse survivors, offered a once in a lifetime opportunity for Lisa to seek help. After submitting her story, she said she waited in anticipation for the deadline to pass and was devastated when she didn’t immediately hear from the contest organizers. Receiving the news of her story being selected, “I actually couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I was in shock.” Lisa still had a challenge ahead of her. Describing her scars on paper didn’t necessarily prepare her for walking into Dr. Moran’s office the first time and exposing her scars. “I was happy, nervous, and scared,” she said. “The thing I remember most is coming in with my head down. “But [Dr. Moran] made me feel so comfortable. I was able to tell her a lot more.” This type of assistance is not foreign to Dr. Moran, as she has long been a participant of The Face-to-Face Domestic Violence Program offering free facial plastic and reconstructive surgery to help heal physical and emotional scars for abuse survivors. Through her expertise, she was able to address the most visible physical damage to Lisa’s face and jaw line; however, her expertise did not address some of Lisa’s other injuries. “It became pretty clear quickly there were some other big pieces that would prevent [Lisa] from healing,” said Dr. Moran, who with the help of the contest organizers reached out to other area professionals to assist further. Shortly after Lisa’s first consultation with Dr. Moran in July, Dr. Kaitlyn Glasscock and Dr. Rachel Carlson of Cool Springs Modern Dentistry were able perform cosmetic dental surgery and provide new dentures to Lisa to augment her facial reconstruction. Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf and his team at Franklin Skin and Laser, through a series of visits, were able to remove Lisa’s tattoo to further ease memories of her past and improve her confidence. Lisa says these procedures have helped her emerge from a

to help other women in need. The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed some of her outreach, but she has long participated in online support groups and continues to do so. Lisa says she understands the difficulty in seeking help, but when she interfaces with others, she encourages them through her “experience, strength and hope.” “If they’re still in an active situation, make a plan,” Lisa said. “The highest risk of death is after leaving. Tell the people around you. Tell someone you can trust.” And if someone has already taken this step, Lisa says to “seek therapy, seek domestic violence groups.” Dr. Moran echoes this advice and feels this message is even more important in our current social climate with people being home more and under stress from the pandemic. “Now more than ever due to the pandemic,” she said. “A lot of people prone for abuse are doing that more. There is hope out there.” Though Dr. Moran can appreciate the physical healing Lisa has undergone in recent months, she sees a confidence and self-worth that goes beyond the physical, and appreciates having been part of that transformation. “So many of these cases you hear about and you can’t do anything,” said Dr. Moran. “But here was an opportunity. I’m incredibly grateful.”
“THE THING I REMEMBER MOST IS COMING IN WITH MY HEAD DOWN. “BUT [DR. MORAN] MADE ME FEEL SO COMFORTABLE. I WAS ABLE TO TELL HER A LOT MORE.”

IN NASHVILLE IS AN UNASSUMING BUILDING JUST STEPS AWAY FROM THE DOWNTOWN AREA WHERE THE NIGHTLIFE THRIVES. It's a former condominium complex that was renovated a few years ago to open in 2018 as Bode Nashville, a boutique hotel concept offering residence style hotel accommodations. The concept, new to Nashville, is like Air BNB meets hotel. Bode caters to group lifestyle travelers combining the flexibility and authenticity of vacation rentals with the comfort and conveniences of a boutique hotel. And what better way is there to decompress from 2020 and its election, pandemic and holiday stressors? Turn off the TV, put away social media and take a short drive in to the city to escape for a day or for a few. The property's design encourages relaxation and socialization without the pressures of the typical hotel. The heart and soul of Bode is the Hub, an inviting and dynamic space for guests and locals alike to gather. Part café and part craft bar, the Hub is a day-to-night setting perfect for an early morning coffee and fresh pastry, an afternoon charcuterie plate, or a late-night local draft. An artisanal market anchors the Hub, equipped with essential groceries (including produce, dairy, beer and wine) for in-room use. Beyond the Hub, Bode Nashville features additional outdoor spaces for guests to frequent while on-property. Fire pits adorn the grounds and encourage spontaneous bonding, s'more-making and sing-a-longing. Games like ping-pong and corn hole encourage socializing among groups and beyond. And then there's Otis, Bode's very own 1948 Ford F5 truck - a tailor-made spot for gathering, pre-and-post gaming, dining, and the occasional photo op.

DECORATING THE KIDS PLAYROOM FOR CHRISTMAS ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA
WHEN IT COMES TO DECORATING A HOME, THE PLAYROOM IS OFTEN THE MOST OVERLOOKED SPACE. But with seven children, sophisticated design enthusiast Jenny Reimold needed to make her home's playroom a shiny, happy place. She says, "With seven children, ages three to seventeen, the playroom was designed to be a place where the older children could watch movies with friends while also serving as a cheerful place where the young ones could create and explore. I wanted this room to grow with my family yet I wanted it to be a stylish space. I didn’t want a room filled with primary colored tubs that resembled a preschool…I wanted a whimsical space that I could relax in despite that mess and chaos that occurs." Last year, the adoption and foster care advocate transformed the room in to a Christmas wonderland for her kids. Jenny states, "I just wanted to create a celebratory space for Christmas in an area we gather in as a family. Using colorful bulbs inside a white tree, I created an ombre effect within the tree and then accented with traditional pastel bulbs, glass bulbs and paper mache unicorns. I love having a designated themed tree for children because I think it just makes the holidays a bit more special." For more Jenny design inspiration, follow her on Instagram @jennyreimold.

JOIN A “CHRISTMAS CLUB” ACCOUNT

The intent is to start saving and get in the habit; doing it continuously. The whole concept of a Christmas Club account is to earmark money for gift giving during the holidays, but the
account options go far beyond December. That’s the great thing about a credit union; while you have one membership,
you can set up multiple accounts under one umbrella customized by you for future spending goals like a new car or
vacation. They can also help you focus on long term needs with a full spectrum of planning services focused on retirement, college and more.

“Put it on paper and name your goals.” You can’t achieve a goal without having one. Southeast Financial Credit Union
can be your financial foundation and offers products to help
both now and in the future. Functioning just like a bank, credit unions are unique in the fact that they are account-

financial milestones. With the most up-to-date technology in online and mobile banking, you are just a few clicks away from opening an account or applying for a loan. Even more
comforting is knowing Southeast Financial Credit Union is
headquartered in Franklin and focuses on being part of the local community.

WHEN BROOKE O’DELL DECIDED TO LEAVE HER JOB AT COUNTRY MUSIC TELEVISION IN 2006 TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH HER CHILDREN, SHE BEGAN LOOKING FOR A NEW CAREER WITH VERY FLEXIBLE HOURS. Because she enjoyed baking and loved the artistic aspect of cake decorating, she focused on learning how to improve her skills. Soon after, she was making cakes for Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson and a host of other well-known personalities. She also was named Best Kids’ Birthday Cake Baker in 2008 by Nashville Scene magazine. In 2017, Brooke decided to expand her horizons, and bought the Sugar Drop Café and Dessert Boutique, which has been in Brentwood for more than 50 years. She completely remodeled it and added her own special touch. Due to its great success, Sugar Drop has now moved into an even bigger and better location. “It’s brand new, so anything I could dream up, we were able to bring to reality with our amazing interior designer,” says Brooke. Inside, customers will find themselves standing on a hand-poured glitter floor with a giant whimsical glass candy chandelier overhead. The beautiful party room, which can seat up to 20 people, is enclosed in glass walls that are covered with papier-mâché desserts. In the café area, customers can enjoy a delicious mug of gourmet hot cocoa complete with homemade marshmallows and a Puffle, a confection of cotton candy covered in chocolate. In-between sips, they can decorate a cookie from one of the incredible cookie kits that ARTICLE SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY HOUSEHOLD PHOTOGRAPHY

35 YEARS AGO, SCOTT HENDRICKS PRODUCED HIS FIRST NUMBER ONE SONG WITH RESTLESS HEART 'S "THAT ROCK WON’T ROLL." He went on to produce six more chart-topping songs with the group and soon became a force to be reckoned with in country music. In fact, he just produced his 77th number one hit, hitting the milestone with a song recorded by longtime collaborator Blake Shelton. Hendricks says, "I’m looking forward to hitting 78, God willing, and I’m anxious to get to 79. I appreciate every single one of them. The longer you’re in this industry, the more you realize just how hard it is to get a song to number one. My part of the process – finding and recording the songs – is much easier than what happens to a song after I do what I do. I have a deep appreciation for those who put on their battle gear to get that song to number one." 70

SAUTEÉD SPINACH RECIPE: (from Martina’s Kitchen Mix: My Recipe Playlist for Real Life) “It’s so easy, there are three ingredients to this thing and it’s actually really good to eat before you donate blood. The American Red Cross recommends eating foods that are high in iron and Vitamin C before you donate blood and spinach has both of those.” INGREDIENTS + 2 tbs olive oil + 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced + 2 (16-ounce) packages fresh baby spinach + 1-1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon; apple cider vinegar may be substituted) INSTRUCTIONS Heat the oil in a large stockpot over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook 30 seconds. Add the spinach, tossing to coat, and cook 3 to 5 minutes or just until wilted. Remove from the heat, and stir in the lemon juice or vinegar; add salt and black pepper to taste.

YOU WILL NEED » A 14” straw or Styrofoam wreath form found at floral and craft stores » Around 12 yards each of 4 different but coordinating ribbons of varying widths and textures » A chenille stem to make the hanger, found at craft stores (looks like a pipe cleaner) » About 50 to 75 fern pins, found at floral and craft stores (looks like a long staple or hairpin)

INSTRUCTIONS 01 First wrap the entire wreath form with a wider and simpler length of ribbon. Attach one end of the ribbon to the back of the form with two of the fern pins pushed at a slight angle through the ribbon and into the form to secure (Fig. 1). Then tightly spiral the ribbon, overlapping slightly, and continue to wrap the form to cover, attaching the end with two more of the

fern pins, securing tightly (Fig. 2).
02 Next, twist the chenille stem around the wreath to form a hanger (Fig. 3).
03 Now, create several bows of various ribbons, with the loops being about the same size. Leave the tie ends as single “tails” and cut the loose ends into a swallow tail. You may also create single loops and tails to fill in between bows (Fig. 4).
FIG. 6 04 Pin the bows and loops and tails onto the covered wreath form with the fern pins, pushing the pins through the center point of the bow or end of the loop and tail (Fig. 5).
05 Continue adding bows and loops and tails until all but the back surface of the wreath form is covered. The closer the bows, the fuller and fluffier the wreath will appear, but don’t crowd them so much that the wreath looks stiff and tight (Fig. 6).
06 Be sure to hang your wreath indoors unless you have used weatherproof ribbons.

SANTA VISITS CHRISTMAS WISHES ARE NOT ON HOLD THIS YEAR
VIA ZOOM ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI
WHAT WOULD CHRISTMAS BE WITHOUT A VISIT TO SEE SANTA? Even though the big guy is very busy this time of year, he always finds time to speak with his fans. With COVID-19 on the naughty list, many of these in-person visits have been canceled. But don’t despair! Santa has come up with a way to stay in touch and hear boys’ and girls’ wishes. Like most people these days, Santa is holding a lot of meetings through Zoom calls from his residence at the North Pole. Once he’s done ensuring all his elves are wearing masks and practicing social distancing while making all the toys requested on the ‘Dear Santa’ letters and through Zoom, Santa will sit down with your kids so he can add their wishes to his long list. Children will also be able to sing their favorite Christmas songs with the jolly guy, or hear him read the classic, "A Visit from St. Nicholas," more fondly known as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Santa can share custom messages with your children to foster Christmas joy or to remind kiddos to be good so they can stay on his nice list. Scheduling a meeting with Santa is easy, and calls can be conducted on computers, tables, or video-enabled smartphones. Group calls can also be held with various organizations, such as scout troops and school classes. These Zoom sessions usually last 10 minutes, but parents can sign up for longer times to enable up to four children to have their own personal visits with Santa. And these calls can be recorded to share with other family members, such as grandparents and aunts and uncles. Your children can also share them with their own kids one day. To bring the magic of Christmas into your home this season, visit VisitWithSantaClaus.com and choose an available day and time. All payments are done through PayPal, and because Santa is a giving man, a portion of the proceeds collected from these visits are being used to support the website company’s annual toy drive.
