OK, GENTLEMEN. You’ve waited patiently for your turn. Last month, we brought you our Ladies issue—it is ladies first, after all—and this month, we present our “Gents” issue, celebrating all things masculine. To gather information for this issue, we looked to the experts: the men of Franklin! You might even recognize a few faces. I once read the following quote: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” Leadership takes many forms, and the three gentlemen we feature have had many successes and failures throughout their careers. They offer a few words of wisdom. We also feature some local businesses owners who use their hands to make art, clothing and even keep your smile bright. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16, a day to celebrate the fathers, brothers, sons and men in our lives we adore. Browse the gift guide and locally owned businesses featured. We feel certain there is something for everyone—even for the

Learning to Thrive with Avenida Cool Springs Nikki Jo Boston Avenida Cool Springs Resident Enrichment Director At Avenida Cool Springs, we believe that providing our residents with a rich array of services and programs—along with a great place to call home—is the key to active, healthy, and engaged living. That is why we offer our Five to ThriveTM Resident Enrichment Program, which was developed utilizing findings from a 10-year study on aging. The study found that five key areas have been shown to have a direct impact on healthy aging: Life Activity, Material Security, Physical and Functional Fitness, Cognitive Efficacy, and Social Resources. Our Five to Thrive program addresses these five areas with daily classes, events, and social opportunities. As the Resident Enrichment Director at Avenida Cool Springs, I manage the community’s rich calendar of physically invigorating, mentally enriching, and socially stimulating activities and resources. My goal is to make sure each resident is able to engage in programs that support their passions and enhance their quality of life, while addressing our five key areas of healthy aging. Let’s explore one of those key areas in more detail: Physical and Functional Fitness. The health and care of our bodies is essential in ensuring that we live vital, strong, and independent lives—in other words, maintaining a strong physical presence. Physical and Functional Fitness focuses on exercise, movement, balance, and momentum to help us maintain that presence. We are taught at an early age to enjoy activity, engage our bodies in challenging ways, and take pride in our physical potential. This passion for vivacious living should continue throughout our entire lives. Luckily, there is an abundance of ways for us to engage our bodies and live vivaciously, from strength training and aquatic classes to long walks with friends.
Our Five to Thrive calendar offers numerous experiences that help our residents focus on Physical and Functional Fitness: Strength training

+
what it is There are many different types of fades, but ultimately a fade haircut is one that tapers in length the further down you go on the back and sides, meaning it isn’t trimmed to just one standard length all around. The level of fade (low, mid or high) depends on what point the shortest part of the hair begins to fade into a longer length. ASK FOR Taper fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade or skin fade
+
what it is This popular style is good for many types of hair as long as you have a lot of it. You’ll need length in the front, back and sides generally long enough to at least brush your shoulders. KEEP IT CLEAN Be sure to keep your sideburns and neckline trimmed even as your hair grows out.

what it is Closely related to the pompadour, the quiff haircut requires longer hair in the front and shorter hair in the back. The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. ASK FOR Short sides and a long textured top. Be sure enough hair is left on top to brush back instead of standing straight up.

WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVING SUCCESS, ACTIONS OFTEN SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. A cliché for sure, but without a doubt, what you achieve in life unequivocally depends on your actions. Professional, Experienced, Result Oriented... IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER? The ability to hire the right kind of people, treat them like you want to be treated, and get out of their way. It took a long time to be comfortable delegating important decisions, but it was the best move I ever made. When people are loyal and understand the common goal, they tend to make the correct decision. WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE TAKEN IN YOUR CAREER? Opening a handful of restaurants! Everyone said, “Don’t do it! Don’t you know there is (insert some statistic they heard) percent chance you will go out of business?” I’m a big believer in chasing your dream. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER? I try to see things from other people’s perspectives, to be willing to do the grunt work alongside them, and to reflect on what I could have done better in tough situations. WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE TAKEN IN YOUR CAREER? Certainly starting my practice in the middle of the recession. I might have never taken that risk under different circumstances, but it was the best career decision I ever made. IF YOU WEREN’T A PR GUY, WHAT WOULD YOUR CAREER BE? I’m a writer, so it would very likely be something in that realm. My degree is in magazine journalism. IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO SLEEP, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH YOUR FREE TIME? I love being outdoors, whether it’s in the woods or on the water, working on old houses or on the back of a tractor. I’m drawn to experiences over gadgets, and we travel as much as we can with the kids. Whatever it is, it would be outside with my family and friends.

The Perfect Space for a Man Cave ARTICLE SUSAN BALDANI
TAILORED LIVING FEATURING PREMIER-GARAGE DOES NOT PROVIDE GENERIC SOLUTIONS OR BELIEVE IN A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL PHILOSOPHY. Instead, according to Mindy Bledsoe, who owns the Nashville location with husband Tim, it’s a personal design process that takes place by collaborating with clients, listening to their wants and needs, and working within their budgets to design the space that’s right for them. “It's really a fun process to go through, and we don't shortcut that in the interest of trying to make a sale; it's more about helping someone's vision come to light,” she says. Having been a designer for a closet company for 13 years and with an extensive background in design, Mindy and fellow designer Jeni Burnside, along with Tim, who handles the flooring components and the day-to-day business operations, can help bring people’s ideas to fruition. They use 3D design software to show clients a rendering of what the space will look like upon completion, and once approved, their in-house employees handle all the installations. While they can design any room in a house, one of their popular services is turning garages into man caves. Tailored Living utilizes this extra room in the house to design masculine spaces. Instead of their belongings being stored away in boxes, the men in the family can actually interact with and enjoy them in an organized layout. “Men tend to not have a lot of areas of the home that reflect their personalities and their identity,” Mindy says. “It gives them their own space, whether they are sportsmen and need to be able to organize that kind of stuff, or if they like to tinker on cars or even want to display their hubcap collections, they can do that. They can put in a Kegerator and have the guys over to watch a ball game.” 26

A Bug's Life
YOU MAY HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED BY ONE OF HIS LARGEST WORKS HANGING IN TUPELO HONEY CAFE DEPICTING TWO LARGE QUILT BLOCKS, BUT YOU’LL DEFINITELY BE FASCINATED BY NICK DEPALMA’S CREATIVE PROCESS. A Middle Tennessean for decades, Nick graduated from Vanderbilt with a fine arts degree in the 1970s and later received his second degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee. He worked in building design for 35 years. Eventually, though, Nick decided it was time to make his bigger dreams a reality; his desire was to create art and make art his full-time profession. His medium is referred to as assemblage, a three-dimensional cousin to collage. Through found objects he gathers, he watches them evolve through his own manipulation. What speaks to Nick in an object is its form, not necessarily its function. He combines discarded objects to make a more sophisticated piece. And Nick has used it all: wood, metal, feathers, plastic. He has no idea where the objects will take him when he begins. The point of discovery for him is just as exciting and rewarding as watching objects take on a life of their own. Nick titles his pieces with his own inspiration and often tells the eventual owner to title it for themselves, having both the artist and the viewer work together. Witnessing reactions to pieces is something Nick enjoys. His pieces are not figurative and are not created to resemble a figure or form. Most stand at two to three feet tall and can be viewed from any angle, making them abstract. You can view more of Nick’s work at NickDePalma.com. June 2019 | Franklin Lifestyle

HEALTHY BODY, HE A LT H Y T EE T H
WE ALL KNOW THE NUMEROUS BENEFITS WORKING OUT CAN HAVE ON OUR BODIES. But did you know exercising can also provide significant health benefits for your teeth as well? “A healthy body and good oral health often go hand-in-hand,” says Dr. Daniel Weese from Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry. Following these simple guidelines can positively impact dental health and help you stay motivated to keep your teeth—and your entire body—happy and healthy. Read on and discover how your teeth are truly smiling every time you hit the gym.

CONTRIBUTES TO A HEALTHY BMI
Maintaining a healthy BMI (body mass index) is also beneficial for your oral health. “A healthy BMI often indicates a diet low on sweets, which in turn creates an oral environment without excessive bacterial plaque,” Dr. Weese says. “Conversely, poor oral health with high levels of bacterial organisms can not only lead to tooth decay, but the harmful bacteria can migrate to

other parts of the body, potentially leading to inflammation in joints and vital organs.”
HELPS PREVENT GUM DISEASE
First and foremost, regular exercise can help lower the risk of contracting periodontitis, also known as gum disease. Basically, a healthy body also means healthy teeth and gums.
WATER IS THE BEST HYDRATION
Electrolyte replacement is necessary when you sweat profusely during a workout. However, don’t reach for the nearest energy or sports drink; many contain ingredients your body doesn’t need to refuel. Reach for the water instead. Additionally, Dr. Weese cautions his patients about consuming too many energy or sports drinks. “The acidic content in these drinks or even lemon water can cause enamel erosion, which could lead to extreme tooth sensitivity and cosmetic issues that can sometimes only be remedied with extensive restorative treatment.”
