THREE POSITIVE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE US

A MOTHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE

When I won Miss Mississippi Teen USA

in October I didn’t realize just how bad my teeth had shifted until I went for my dental

visit. I had already had braces back in high school and now I was facing the fact that the bottom teeth were crowding and somehow my upper teeth had started moving forward which looked like they were “bucking” out. I

met with Dr. Kemp and his team and we talked about making my smile beautiful again. I didn’t like to smile much at the time because the crowding on the bottom was very noticeable. Dr. Kemp explained the process and told me we could work quickly as to get me smile ready for Miss Teen USA. I had my braces for approximately 4 months. I have just had them removed and I don’t believe I have

stopped smiling yet. I have the perfect

smile now and I think my confidence level is at an all time high. The services I received were phenomenal. I absolutely love my smile now. On April 22 I will leave Mississippi to travel to Teen USA in Reno, Nevada. It’s a dream that has finally come true. We will be in Reno for one week learning the USA walk

IT'S BEEN SAID THAT ONE WOMAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, BUT TOGETHER WE CAN ROCK THE WORLD. This issue applauds women rocking the world! We not only celebrate mothers this Mother's Day with suggestions for some firstclass gift-giving, but we also highlight some brilliant women in our local community. Our May issue is filled with stories to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives. From a mural painter and women business owners to profiles of three Franklin women making a difference, the Women’s issue serves to recognize the powerful role women have in our community and beyond. In this issue, we spend a little time talking to Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the former co-host of The View. And we're not talking politics; we're talking things that make her feel strong as a mom, friend and wife—just like the strong women who comprise this issue.

The Registry Is Not Just For Weddings

KATHY BERRY AND JANE DUNGAN HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE THEIR CHILDREN WERE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AT BATTLE GROUND ACADEMY. They started working together at The Registry, a bridal registry and fine gifts store begun by two of their good friends in 2003. It was the perfect fit. Both ladies like helping others and love entertaining friends and family. When the store was ready to be sold, Jane and Kathy were there for support and to continue the tradition of The Registry, so they decided to buy it in 2014. After all, they'd known the previous owners for years. Their children also went to BGA, so they'd all worked on fundraisers together, watched sports together and watched them all grow up together. Purchasing the store was a natural next step for them. They wanted to keep the vibrant store alive. They also wanted to provide a place for everyone to feel at home, a casual atmosphere for the shopper to pick out just the right gifts for their friends. All the ladies who work at The Registry, many who have been there since the beginning, also wanted to continue to offer wonderful gifts and services to the Franklin community. The Registry offers such a unique shopping experience to those who live in the Franklin area and to those visiting historic downtown Franklin. “Everybody has something special they contribute to the store to make it what it is,” Kathy says.

DIVISION, NO. 1 KELLER WILLIAMS AGENT IN TENNESSEE 2017 WHAT IS THE SINGLE PIECE OF ADVICE OR THE CONVERSATION YOU HAD THAT SHAPED HOW YOU VIEW AND PROCEED THROUGH LIFE? First and foremost, be true to yourself. You cannot shape who you are in others’ eyes, and you won’t have to if you remain who you are. Being you will allow you to soar with your strengths in a sustainable manner. IN YOUR EXPERIENCE WHY IS FRANKLIN/ MIDDLE TENNESSEE/WILLIAMSON COUNTY THE BEST PLACE TO THRIVE? Franklin and Brentwood offer the total package: quality of life. They are a great financial decision, the tax base is low, so it’s a great location for businesses, and there are great schools. You get a small-town feel with big opportunity. WHAT’S A TRAIT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN YOU NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL? That it ’s OK to fail. The best learning comes from failure; it helps shape you and gives you perspective. IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD SNAP YOUR FINGERS AND HAVE HAPPEN, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Allow people to have the tools to cope with any crisis life hands to them. Let people have the tools to make and create solutions, whether it be knowledge or access to resources.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS (CON TI N U ED)

Diane Giddens CHIEF OF STAFF FOR WILLIAMSON COUNTY MAYOR ROGERS ANDERSON WHAT IS THE SINGLE PIECE OF ADVICE OR THE CONVERSATION YOU HAD THAT SHAPED HOW YOU VIEW AND PROCEED THROUGH LIFE? “Take your passion and make it happen” from the Flashdance soundtrack. It really rang true at a young age. If you enjoy work, then it’s not really work. IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHY IS FRANKLIN/ MIDDLE TENNESSEE/WILLIAMSON COUNTY THE BEST PLACE TO THRIVE? The giving and caring people in the community. There is a large number of not-for-profits in the immediate area, and they would not exist if it weren’t for the generosity of the businesses and individuals here who are so kind with their giving back. WHAT’S A TRAIT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN YOU NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL? While there are many, one of the more surprising was that I need to use my motherly intuition quite a bit. IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD SNAP YOUR FINGERS AND HAVE HAPPEN, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Above all else, a cure for every type of cancer and Alzheimer’s; however, really it boils down to wanting good health for everyone.

30

Franklin Lifestyle | May 2019

Lauren Rauter OWNER OF ROCK PAPER SCISSORS WHAT IS THE SINGLE PIECE OF ADVICE OR THE CONVERSATION YOU HAD THAT SHAPED HOW YOU VIEW AND PROCEED THROUGH LIFE? My grandmother always said, “If you can’t change it, then there is no point in worrying about it.” I always stop and remind myself of this in my personal or professional life when I’m fretting. IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHY IS FRANKLIN/ MIDDLE TENNESSEE/WILLIAMSON COUNTY THE BEST PLACE TO THRIVE? We are so blessed to be in this community. We have a bit of everything here. It’s a little bit city and a little bit country. What is so amazing about where we live is that everyone is so thankful to be here, and it creates such an amazing sense of community. WHAT’S A TRAIT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN YOU NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL? Adaptability. When we opened 16 years ago, the market was a very different place than it is now. We have evolved into a bespoke party goods store and can help you from the beginning to the end of your event’s needs. Clients come in and we design their invitations, help plan tablescapes and decorate the venue. If you would have asked me 16 years ago if I would be hanging off a ladder hanging huge balloon installations, I would have said you were crazy. The market changed, our clients’ needs changed and so have we. I love every minute of it. IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD SNAP YOUR FINGERS AND HAVE HAPPEN, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Ten thousand followers on Instagram. Besides the huge achievement, I’m dying to offer my clients a swipe-up feature to shop online.

INSPIRED BY ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA

ELISABETH HASSELBECK MOVED TO THE AREA ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO AND HAS FOUND HER HOME IN NASHVILLE. "We truly love where we are. There's tons of room for kindness, great food and amazing music. It's such a blessing for our family to be here," she says. Of course, she didn't leave out her admiration for Franklin. "I love Franklin. We probably spend most of our free time out there. I love Main Street and the antique stores." No doubt, however, it's a far cry from New York City where the star spent most of her career in front of the camera on both The View and Fox & Friends. And while she has learned and grown from those experiences, she says it wasn't always easy. In her new book, Point of View: A Fresh Look at Work, Faith and Freedom, Elisabeth details the ups and downs of living her life in the public eye and how it's changed her. These days, she refers to herself as CBO—Chief Breakfast Officer for her family—and spends some of her free time running, painting and spending time with her family. Although she claims she's not good at giving advice, she says the book felt like something she was called to do. "It felt like an invitation to go back and

Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s Point of ‘View’ 32

better reflect on things," she says. Elisabeth shares some lessons she learned throughout her storied career.

“I’m not really good at advice because I tend to learn things the h a r d w a y.”

1.

It is possible to learn something new at any age, so do that as often as possible. When she went from The View to Fox & Friends, she had to learn how to deliver hard, straight news after years of simply giving her opinion. "Learning something new is an incredible time for growth," she says.

Elisabeth and husband Tim

2.

F i n d a m e n t o r, and be a m e n t o r. "Be willing, ready and joyful when it comes to sharing your experience with someone stepping into what you have walked through. Asking questions does not make you weak."

3.

All moms are fulltime moms. "Whether we are working moms or stay-at-home moms, we are all fulltime moms, and we are on the same team. We need each other."

4.

Really letting go t a ke s t i m e . Six years after Elisabeth was let go from The View, they asked her to return. "God gave me the freedom to let go of the very thing I would have done anything to hang onto six years earlier."

That is why we offer our Five to ThriveTM Resident Enrichment Program, which was developed utilizing findings from a 10-year study on aging. The study found that five key areas have been shown to have a direct impact on healthy aging: Life Activity, Material Security, Physical and Functional Fitness, Cognitive Efficacy, and Social Resources. Our Five to Thrive program addresses these five areas with daily classes, events, and social opportunities. As the Resident Enrichment Director at Avenida Cool Springs, I manage the community’s rich calendar of physically invigorating, mentally enriching, and socially stimulating activities and resources. My goal is to make sure each resident is able to engage in programs that support their passions and enhance their quality of life, while addressing our five key areas of healthy aging. Let’s explore one of those key areas in more detail: Life Activity. Life Activity is focused on emotional and spiritual health. Being active, exploring new places, experiencing new opportunities, and embarking on stimulating adventures that engage the body and the mind are all activities that help us be active participants in daily life. Beyond these life experiences, though, we also want to focus on thinking positively about being in touch with our feelings, and comfortable in expressing them. We’ve learned that the search for deeper meaning in life never ceases, so it’s important to engage in experiences that help us discover the depth of our spiritual awareness.

Our Five to Thrive calendar offers numerous experiences that help our residents focus on Life Activity: Mindfulness meditation

Before starting at the library, she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with degrees in illustration and literary arts and studies. She keeps up with her art by creating large theater sets for Harding Academy productions. In 2018, she competed for and won grant monies provided by the Library Foundation and Friends of the Library to paint a mural in the story theater at the main library and in the six branches of the Williamson County Public Library system. Marin started painting in December and is expected to complete all murals this spring. Each mural will represent their unique community. Together, they represent Williamson County.

This mural in progress is in the children's department at the main branch.

“My favorite thing about Williamson County is how much everyone loves th e library. It ’s exciting to see how integral it is to our patrons’ everyday lives. It really brings th e community togeth er, and we get a chance to form real connections with th e people we meet. Some of th e best people I know I met th rough Williamson County’s main library.”

After her five years in the Army, she accepted a job in Franklin and decided to join the volunteer organization that helped her through her military service. this incredible opportunity to be honored and seek closure because of the Society. When it’s time for a local send-off, the Sarah Polk women go to the Nashville airport to support them and donate snacks for their journey. The Tennessee Society also fundraises for the Tennessee Fisher House Foundation in Murfreesboro and makes sure the homes get the proper maintenance, while the Sarah Polk women help keep the properties beautiful by planting flowers. Every DAR member is a descendant of anyone involved in achieving America’s independence during the Revolutionary War. With some genealogy research from Aubrey’s father, she was able to join and ultimately discover a new group of friends. “They’ve really become family for me because I had no family here in Tennessee. They have been so generous with me just as when I was serving,” Aubrey says. The women threw a baby shower for her and then a birthday party for her son. Despite some common misconceptions, Aubrey says, “I can tell you that as a 34-year-old half Korean veteran, daughter of an immigrant, fulltime worker and mom, we are a diverse group.” Aubrey is one of many DAR members dedicated to making active duty military and veterans feel appreciated by giving them the care they deserve. The projects and events the state society and local chapters create reach military members far and wide. Though many projects the volunteers of Daughters of the American Revolution accomplish are completed out of the public eye, the military men and women and their families will be forever thankful for their unconditional support. 42

Now Ser ving: A Cup of Love ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU MAY NOTICE WHEN WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS OF THE CAFÉ AT THISTLE FARMS IS THE UNIQUE TEACUP ARTWORK THAT HANGS FROM THE CEILING IN THE ENTRYWAY, DISPLAYING MORE THAN 1,100 DIFFERENT TEACUPS. Hal Cato, CEO of Thistle Farms, shares that the project was designed by the interior team at McAlpine House and executed by Andy Harding, a local Nashville artist, along with the help of several volunteers. The café started collecting teacups more than five years ago, and the collection continued to grow. “Like all of us, there is a story in every cup,” Hal says. This community began in 1997 when Becca Stevens, a local Episcopal priest, founded the Magdalene Program, a housing assistance program dedicated to helping female survivors of human trafficking, prostitution and addiction. Four years later, the mission of Thistle Farms was born. “We had operated the Magdalene homes for four years when we realized that we needed to do something to help the survivors financially as well because they were not getting jobs. So, we started the social enterprise of making products,” Hal says. When survivors join the two-year residential program, they are provided with employment through Thistle Farms, health insurance, meals, therapy and access to educational groups. Hal says Thistle Farms has had a large social impact on the local community by helping women many people would otherwise ignore. CONTINUED >
