You see, when we moved to Franklin nearly four years ago, I was determined to become an expert on life in my new hometown. My family and I have made quite a dent in this list, though it never seems to really shrink as I add new places to visit each week. I am the “local” now and enjoy telling visitors about Franklin’s hidden gems and even the back roads to get there. July’s issue celebrates summer. I love all the issues of Franklin Lifestyle, however, July’s issue speaks my language. It has a list! A list of summer activities and new Franklin-owned businesses or restaurants to visit. I didn’t even know about three of them, so my personal “things to do” list is now officially at 74. Whether you are a lifetime resident of Franklin or so new to the area you are still unpacking boxes, I’d encourage you to get out, jump in the car, and enjoy all Franklin

LOCALLY OWNED

Former Green Beret Equips Men for Battle in Body, Mind and Spirit ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON PHOTOGRAPHY PEGGY WEATHERFORD WARRIOR LIFE TRAINING SOUNDS LIKE AN INTENSE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THE ELITE FEW WHO ARE GOING OFF TO BATTLE. That’s partly correct — it is an intense training program, or at least as intense as you want to make it, and you are training for battle, but not the type of battle you’d expect. Enter David Howell, a Green Beret and well-decorated Army veteran with an impressive 26 years of service, dedication and stewardship behind him. His goal with Warrior Life Training is to equip men for battle: body, mind and spirit. With his extensive military background, the body is trained in the discipline of mixed martial arts, tactical applications and conditioning, using your own body weight more than a dumbbell. The larger piece of his training is the willingness and desire to “get your knees dirty,” as David describes it. Warrior Life Training is not just personal training and nutrition coaching, it’s about also having a plan for your spiritual and mental preparedness. If you come from a place of focus and clarity on your inner self, you will be prepared for the highs and lows life has for you. The intent is that men are not to run away from their problems but toward them with their faith and lead by example. David’s personal goal and goal for his clients is to live your life less like yourself and more like God. A man equipped for battle knows he cannot go through life alone, nor can he be the sole solution for the people in his life. Each client has his or her own customized plan, as no one person is the same physically or mentally. In all journeys through life, David encourages people to surround themselves with individuals who are above them, walking with them and need guidance below them. Each of those types helps to develop a well-rounded individual. Not only does David deserve accolades for his service with the United States Army, he also deserves praise for his continued desire to give of himself through Warrior Life Training and the hope he instills in the lives of the men he trains.

I wrote her a song called “Two Houses.” And the list goes on. I still write songs about people’s stories to this day, and I think I always will. In Nashville, we like to say “It all begins with a song.” I like to say, “Every song begins with a story.” This journey with my fans has taken our relationship to a deeper level. Instead of just making music for people, I feel like we’ve been able to do life together. 5. WRITING FOR OTHERS. SUMMER IS A GLORIOUS TIME OF YEAR. Warm weather, no school, vacations and free time are among the many things that make us look forward to this favorite time of year. But summer is also long, and sometimes it isn’t easy to come up with things to do every day. The excitement gives way to the dreaded “B” word — bored —and the days suddenly become mundane. Here are just a few suggestions to keep you entertained until the kids go back to school.

After beginning a music career in Nashville in the early 1960s, and skyrocketing to legendary country and comedic Grammy-award winning artist status, Ray Stevens launched his dream-come-true CabaRay showroom in his own backyard this past January. “I wanted to bring a state-of-the-art Vegas style showroom to Nashville. I wanted a venue close to home where I could perform and pay homage to those producers, artists, musicians and songwriters who were instrumental in the development of my career, and in making Nashville “Music City.” Stevens delivers a fun-filled hour and a half show of singing, piano-playing, comedy and storytelling every Friday and Saturday night, and on an occasional Thursday. Accompanied by his live band and back-up singers, Ray Stevens plays and sings his hits songs including “The Streak,” “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival,” “Misty,” and “Everything is Beautiful.” Audiences will enjoy the dinner and show in a luxurious venue surrounded by photos of iconic music producers and artists. Or they can attend the show only upstairs in theatre-style seating, enjoy the piano bar before and after the show, and pick up a memento from the gift shop. CONTINUED >

‘C O U N T RY B O Y ’ AT HEART HOW NORM GIELDA FOUND HIS WAY HOME ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY TERESA GINN NORM GIELDA IS A FORMER MARINE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT SERGEANT WHO SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE AND THE CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA, AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER. After years of being away, Norm says he "found his way home” to the beautiful rolling hills of middle Tennessee. + NORM, PLEASE SHARE THE EARLY YEARS OF YOUR LIFE. I was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan. I probably had a false impression of the “California life,” but at age 22 I packed my truck and drove west. I landed in Orange County and decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. 26

Franklin Lifestyle | July 2018

+ HOW DID THIS DECISION LEAD YOU TO ENLIST IN THE MARINES? I was told I needed more life knowledge and knew military experience was beneficial in law enforcement. So at age 24, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and left for boot camp in San Diego. Once a Marine Reserve, I continued pursuing a law enforcement career and was hired in 1990 as a police recruit in Santa Ana. + WERE YOU DEPLOYED? No, but in early 1991 I was put on alert by the Marine Corps during the Desert Shield Campaign. The message was to put all personal, financial and legal affairs in order in preparation for deployment. It transitioned to Desert Storm and was over in what seemed like a few days. I served in the USMC until 1994, training and supervising subordinate Marines in using communication and radar equipment during live-fire training exercises. + SHARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. HEAVEN ON EARTH:

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, SC THE IMMACULATE ISLAND WITH NO CARS IS THE ULTIMATE BEACH HOUSE LOCATION. ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND IS A SECRET PARADISE. This tiny barrier island with only about 400 residents is tucked between Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and you can’t get there by car. The island has no bridge so you can only arrive and depart by boat, allowing this pristine sea island to maintain its Lowcountry mystique. Rich in culture and history as well as natural beauty, Daufuskie’s secluded island lifestyle offers a perfect retreat to get away from it all. Enter Haig’s Point, a private community of more than 1,000 acres with homes for sale. Need a vacation place that is free of stress, congestion and the daily grind? Haig’s Point members enjoy tennis, golf and all things equestrian. A fitness center, community park and dock, pools and dining venues round out the amenities in this member-owned community that offers you your own little slice of heaven. “Prince of Tides” author Pat Conroy wrote about the island’s magic in “The Water is Wide: A Memoir.”

THE DINING The oyster chandelier in the kitchen was selected to reinforce the beach concept with a touch of elegance while incorporating natural elements.

THE VIEW Each home in the Sanctuary is designed to take advantage of the unique environment, reflecting the island lifestyle with its own private deck/dock at water’s edge.

The modern coastal farmhouse was designed with thoughtful elements like shiplap-covered walls, and low-maintenance finishes that are necessary on waterfront locations. 32

LOCAL’S CHOICE

Yummy Summer Sangria

ARTICLE PROVIDED BY OLIVIA OLIVE OIL PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE HERE, BUT AS MUCH AS WE ALL LOVE A GLASS OF WINE, IT CAN BE A LITTLE HEAVY ON A HOT, LAZY SUMMER AFTERNOON. Our go-to drink is wine's sister, sangria. Fresh fruits and spices will be sure to make this your favorite summer cocktail.

WH I T E H OT PEAC H S I M PL E SY RU P INGREDIENTS ++ 1/2 cup sugar ++ 1/2 cup water ++ 1/4 vanilla bean, scraped and seeded ++ 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

DIRECTIONS In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, vanilla bean (seeds and pod) and red pepper flakes. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently, until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and strain through a fine mesh strainer. Set aside until cool, then refrigerate until needed. This makes about one-half cup syrup, slightly more than is needed for the remainder of the recipe. The syrup will keep for up to two weeks, covered and refrigerated.

WH I T E H OT PEAC H BAL SAM I C SANGRIA INGREDIENTS ++ 1 750-milliliter bottle dry white wine ++ 1/2 cup Olivia’s Peach Balsamic Vinegar ++ 2 tablespoons brandy ++ 2 tablespoons peach schnapps ++ 1/3 cup white hot peach simple syrup ++ 3 white peaches, sliced, plus extra garnish ++ 2 to 4 cups assorted fruits, sliced ++ Seeds from 1/4 vanilla bean

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine the wine, peach balsamic, brandy, peach schnapps and hot peach simple syrup. Stir in the peaches and fruit. Stir in the seeds

scraped from the vanilla bean, discarding the pod. Cover and refrigerate for 48 hours. To serve, fill a glass three-fourths full with sangria. Top off with soda water or lemon-lime soda, depending on the sweetness desired. Serve immediately.
