WELCOME TO NOVEMBER. I can barely bring myself to say it, but it's here: the 11th month of 2018. Where does the time go? I swear, it was just June. But anyway, here we are. The 11th month brings with it sweater weather, changing leaves, Thanksgiving break, and—inevitably—Christmas shopping. And in this issue, we cover it all! Lots of family coming to visit? We offer some tips on how to make that guest room an inviting refuge. Already feeling guilty about how much you plan to eat at Thanksgiving dinner? We suggest a fun pre-dinner workout. Looking for some gift inspiration that you can't get at the big-box stores? We recommend local boutiques with treasure troves of special items. Whatever your plan is for the start of this holiday season, we hope you're spending it with the people you love and giving thanks for all the ways in which you are blessed. Thanks for reading! With gratitude,

DO 15 REPS PER EXERCISE. Repeat for four rounds

PUSH-UP While keeping core engaged and back flat, position your hands a little outside shoulder-width apart. As you begin to lower toward the ground, your elbows should be at about a 45-degree angle to your body. Try to lower yourself enough that your elbows are in line with your shoulders. While keeping core tight and back flat, push up to the starting position. You should only go for the full range of motion if you have the mobility and strength to do it properly. If you would like to modify to reduce the load, use an elevated stable surface for your hands to perform the exercise.

SQUAT Stand with feet a little wider than hip-width apart. Focus on keeping your entire foot pressed into the floor and pushing through the outside of each foot as you lower into your squat. Think about sitting back, as if you would sit in a chair. Your torso should lean forward slightly with chest high and shoulders back. When you start to rise from the bottom of your squat, actively push your knees out and focus on using your glutes to do the work.

(NOT)HOME FOR THE HOLI DAYS FIRST RESPONDERS SHARE WHAT KEEPS THEM GOING

ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PEGGY WEATHERFORD

24

Franklin Lifestyle | November 2018

WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SHIFT? Since both my wife and I, a nurse, can be on shift for a holiday, it’s important for there to be some type of group meal for the crew. It can be lunch or dinner, and often the crew’s family is invited to attend. The feeling and action of “togetherness” is important. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF WORKING ON A HOLIDAY? Customer service is what the job boils down to, and going the extra mile in a stressful situation is always a priority, especially on a holiday—if time and a situation allow, letting any kids see the fire truck or any other way we can make the atmosphere a little more relaxed. WHEN YOU DO END UP CELEBRATING AT HOME, WHAT MUST YOU HAVE TO REALLY MAKE IT A HOLIDAY? No matter if in town or away, it’s about the food and getting all the kids involved. For Thanksgiving, deep frying the turkey and hanging around and making cooking an allday affair seals the deal of an official holiday. Cleaning up together and looking forward to the next season while taking in the unique smells of the day. HOW WOULD YOU HELP A COWORKER WHO IS HAVING A PARTICULARLY TOUGH TIME WORKING THAT SHIFT? Make sure that the day and environment are welcoming and about brotherhood. Remind them that they will be home for another holiday. A good way to have a positive outlook is to volunteer to work; choosing to be there and knowing you will have family time at

GEOFFREY MANFRE

another holiday.

(NOT) HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

(CON TI N UED)

WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SHIFT? While working shift on the major holidays like Thanksgiving, but specifically Christmas, it is important for me to keep morale high and spread the holiday spirit to my coworkers and the citizens we are serving. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF WORKING ON A HOLIDAY? The best part of a holiday shift is knowing that you are there to protect and serve the community so they can enjoy the holidays with their family without any worries of their safety. WHEN YOU DO END UP CELEBRATING AT HOME, WHAT MUST YOU HAVE TO REALLY MAKE IT A HOLIDAY? Aside from enjoying the quality time with my friends and family, I must have some of my favorite desserts to eat. I prefer a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing or a cheesecake. HOW WOULD YOU HELP A COWORKER WHO IS HAVING A PARTICULARLY TOUGH TIME WORKING THAT SHIFT? I would take the time to talk to them and find out what is on their mind. If being away from family was the issue, then I would reassure them that they will be able to spend time with their family after shift. I would suggest different ways they could celebrate on the next holiday they have to work. 26

STEVE CHITTANAVONG

POLICE OFFICER, CITY OF FRANKLIN

WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SHIFT? Although everyday things go wrong at home, holidays have a greater chance for more extended family members and people to be there when an emergency arises. The increase in the number of people in itself can cause more stress and worry to those in need. Arriving in a timely manner and extending a professional, assuring attitude goes a long way in settling those around the patient, as well as the injured party. Leaving the home quickly and quietly also helps in keeping to a more “normal” holiday event. To me, it’s about creating the least amount of extra stress and excitement as possible. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF WORKING ON A HOLIDAY? The best part about working a holiday is the feeling I get when we help those who truly need our help and assistance. Those folks are thankful we are there. WHEN YOU DO END UP CELEBRATING AT HOME, WHAT MUST YOU HAVE TO REALLY MAKE IT A HOLIDAY? We celebrate the holiday when I get home, and it works out fine! My kids are older and understand. We eat the traditional meal for that holiday, and I enjoy it just as if it were the actual holiday. I think my kids get a bit of a kick out of having two holiday meals where I only get one. We are flexible; if I work Christmas, we open gifts on Christmas Eve. HOW WOULD YOU HELP A COWORKER WHO IS HAVING A PARTICULARLY TOUGH TIME WORKING THAT SHIFT? I give them enough space to call and talk with their family. Occasionally, we have

SHOP TILL YOU DROP ALTERNATIVES TO BIG-BOX STORES ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA

“SHOP TILL YOU DROP” IS A FAVORITE EXPRESSION THAT BASICALLY MEANS BUYING THINGS UNTIL YOU ARE PHYSICALLY EXHAUSTED AND CANNOT WALK INTO OR AROUND ANOTHER STORE ANY LONGER. With the onset of the Christmas season here, many of us will be feeling exactly that! But walking around big-box stores is definitely not as much fun as it is to visit little local shops. In fact, shopping small businesses has a day dedicated to it this month; Nov. 24 is Small Business Saturday, and it falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s often been said that small businesses are the backbone of the American economy and should be supported. So we’re doing our part in showing you some great alternatives to bigbox store shopping, and these little local gems have treasures aplenty to satisfy even the most discerning recipient on your Christmas list!

INSPIRED BY (CON TI N U ED)

“NO ACT OF KINDNESS, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, IS EVER WASTED.”

That is a quote that many local business owners are taking to heart, and it’s really striking a chord with their patrons. When a business donates their time or services to charity, it’s not only good for business, it’s also good for morale.

Pair this with the fact that charitable contributions can increase employee satisfaction and consumer perception of the business, and you have a business model that becomes a win-win for all parties involved. One company that is doing just that is the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop with its Pie It Forward program to help improve the local community of Franklin by giving back. Each month, the shop creates a specialty pie for the program, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of that pie is donated to a charity or nonprofit organization within the community. For example, this past September, funds from every peanut butter pie sold were donated to Friends of Franklin Parks. “We have developed the Pie It Forward program to provide our bakeries with creative ways to support local schools, churches, the military and other important nonprofits. Pie It Forward is our play on Pay It Forward. We just add pie.” Although the Franklin location of Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is in the middle of a relocation within the next year, you can still go online to request your charity or nonprofit organization to be considered for the program. For more information, visit ButtermilkSkyPie.com.

Turn a life at risk into a life worth living More than 17.5 million Americans are living with a serious mental illness, and of them, 4 million also have a drug or alcohol addiction. Adolescents and adults in Nashville who are struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders have a new resource for recovery at Rogers Behavioral Health. The new, evidence-based Dual Diagnosis program effectively treats both substance abuse disorder and mental health issues like OCD, anxiety, and depression—at the same time. Dual treatment includes: • Outpatient programs that allow patients to attend a structured treatment setting and maintain schedules at home, school, or work • Proven approach led by a board-certified psychiatrist, expert medical staff, and dedicated care team • Group, individual, and family therapy In addition to addiction, Rogers-Nashville also provides treatment for OCD and anxiety, depression and mood disorders, and eating disorders. Does our treatment work? See the effects of our evidence-based treatment at rogersbh.org/outcomes.
