We will be offering a chance to win free tickets throughout the month of May, so be sure to check out our Facebook page for more details! Studio Tenn is pulling out all the stops to present a musical comedy of truly epic proportions. NISSAN AND TENNESSEE BOARD OF REGENTS OPEN JOINT WORKFORCE TRAINING FACILITY Governor Bill Haslam and Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora Tydings joined Nissan officials to formally open the Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Murfreesboro's Smyrna Campus and Nissan Training Center. The state-of-theart campus offers high-quality programs to prepare Tennessee students and Nissan employees for careers in advanced manufacturing and other fields. The 162,000-square-foot center is a public-private partnership between Nissan and the Tennessee Board of Regents to create educational opportunities that are closely aligned to current workforce needs. "This is a true partnership between the State of Tennessee and Nissan," said Gov. Haslam. "Our College of Applied Technology at Murfreesboro needed more space and equipment to serve Tennesseans who want to learn skills for a new or improved career. Nissan needed a new center to train its own employees and those of its suppliers. The new Smyrna facility, which is both a public TCAT open to all and a Nissan Training Center was a perfect solution and is an important milestone in our Drive to 55 – to equip at least 55 percent of Tennesseans with a college degree or certificate by 2025." The new education and training facility enrolls both public TCAT

HOW MELBA WALTON'S PASSION BECAME A FAMILY AND FRANKLIN TRADITION. ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY SHATERIAN

T

he story of Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry began over 40 years ago when family entrepreneur Melba Walton began her jewelry career by setting up her goods at flea markets, spreading

a blanket across the hood of her car and displaying the items she had for sale. In 1974 she opened Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry as a brick and mortar store in Carter’s Court, Franklin’s premier shopping venue at the time. The store moved to its current location in 1983 when Melba purchased a building downtown at 410 Main Street. It was here that Walton’s began to flourish and achieved its iconic status as a mainstay of downtown retail. “Over the years, we have seen Franklin go through many changes and growth, but one thing remains the same - the passion and love that Walton’s has for this town and the people who come through our door,” says Mike Walton, Melba’s son and the store’s current owner. Mike’s daughter, Julie, practically grew up in the downtown store. And there is evidence to prove it – a noticeable indention in the doorframe leading to the showroom where Julie bounced in a Johnny Jump Up exercise seat while watching her family work as a toddler. Now the store’s general manager, Julie Walton Garland is proud to be an heir to a family and Franklin tradition. “A generational business can be a rare commodity today,” she says. “We are grateful every day for the opportunity to be a part of the Franklin community, continuing the dream that my grandmother had for Walton’s and keeping her vision alive.” Walton Garland is fond of the relationships that she and her family have been able to form over the years. One of her favorites involves a couple that was shopping for an engagement ring. “They found the perfect one and before we knew it, he was down on one knee proposing to her in our showroom,” recalls Walton Garland. “It was such a magical moment! We feel so humbled and blessed to have such wonderful people share their love stories with us.”

As the name says, Walton’s Antique & Estate Jeweler specializes in pre-1940’s antique and estate pieces. The store also purchases gold and sterling items. Walton's maintains the foundation on which store founder and family matriarch Melba Walton created the store - a place where all are welcome to share in the love and admiration for one-of-a- kind jewelry pieces.

CHANGING THE WORLD,

ONE DESIGN AT A TIME

O'MORE COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE USING THEIR EDUCATION TO HELP OTHERS.

ARTICLE ALLIE MYSZKA | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIST Y SHATERIAN AND AUGUST BREMER

"WE'RE CHALLENGING OUR STUDENTS TO APPLY THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE OFTEN FORGOTTEN BY FASHION,"

E

very year around this time, O’More College of Design students are immersed in preparations for the college’s spring Fashion Show. At the event on May 12, junior and senior students will showcase the hard work they’ve put in throughout the year,

as is tradition. But this year, the Fashion Show will be a bit different—and even more meaningful. The 2017 Fashion Show will focus on using fashion design to make a positive impact on the world. Students are creating clothing within the parameters of three different design “challenges,” one of which is designing a custom outfit for a child with Down syndrome. "We're challenging our students to apply the design thinking process to help individuals who are often forgotten by fashion," said Jamie Atlas, Chair of Fashion at O’More. They’ll have their very own outfit, designed to their specific taste and needs. The children will model their custom-made-with-love outfit in the O’More Fashion Show, and then will get to keep the clothing. In terms of design and style, these children will be forgotten no more, thanks to O’More students’ creativity. In a unique relationship with Gigi’s Playhouse, a nationwide Down syndrome achievement center, 11 O’More students have been paired with 11 local children who have Down syndrome. The students met their child for the first time at the Nashville location of Gigi’s Playhouse in late March. Laughter and

20

Franklin Lifestyle | May 2017

excitement were plentiful as the students and children hugged, played, and talked together. Each student also spent time with their child’s parents to get an idea of their child’s fashion preferences and unique needs in an outfit. The children were, of course, excited for the opportunity to dress up. But, the students were just as overjoyed to have a new and slightly unconventional design opportunity. Macy Harmon, a Fashion Design major in her junior year at O’More, was paired with Emmaline, an energetic young lady who loves to be the star of any room, and can’t wait to walk the runway. “Normally, we’re just designing something to fit a model form,” Harmon said, “but this particular piece will be just for Emmaline—it’s not made for anybody else.” Harmon plans to incorporate plenty of Emmaline’s favorite color—purple—into her custom outfit, along with “hopefully some wrinkle-free fabric” to withstand Emmaline’s playful, active demeanor. Parents are also grateful for the love and care being shown to their children by O’More and its students. Ruth McCall has brought her 7-year-old son, Jonah, to Gigi’s Playhouse since it opened its Nashville location in 2013. Gigi’s Playhouse has been a blessing to her family, and has provided Jonah with valuable life skills over the years through classes and activities tailored for children with Down syndrome.

MAKE YOUR HOME MORE LIVABLE WITH HELP FROM CLOSETS BY DESIGN'S SANDRA SOKOL.

Here are a few questions to ask prior to your project: • Do you wear or use this item, ever? I can’t tell you how many times I have seen an item in my pantry or closet that has been hanging out way too long! • Is this a seasonal item? • Is it still there due to lack of appropriate stor-

to discard those winter items that are old or that you didn’t use this season. A local charity would be happy to accept them.

Sandra recommends evaluating how many pieces

Recently I met with Sandra Sokol, owner of Closets by Design, and she shared some helpful tips for enhancing your living space, as well as strategies for getting a new start on organization.

+ Is there a dedicated crafts area that needs some help? Check out this idea that can organize all of your supplies while creating a beautiful look in your home with multiple functions! I love the open space for wrapping paper and gift bags.

+ How many scarfs, belts and ties become lost or wrinkled due to lack of space? Sandra specializes in consulting with clients and customizing spaces that fit their needs. If you share a closet space, you may want to have more drawers than shelves. I love the look and function of being able to display shoes, handbags or many of my special go-to items, without having to dig or search.

are current and need to be hung or folded. If you know you have your weekly go-to suits, this is a perfect example of making them neatly arranged and easy to find.

+ Is your garage so cluttered that you no longer can park your car inside? Then check this out! This is an awesome way to store those items while providing more space and function in this high traffic area of your home. Closets by Design also offers durable garage flooring that keeps this area clean and bright.
