Creative Hands That Heal
T
his has certainly been a wild and crazy season, with a variety of illnesses that have consumed our family and friends. I can’t remember when a flu epidemic caused several schools throughout Middle Tennessee to shut down for a week! We are all part of a community that is filled with loving friends and family. This should remind us all to be kind to one another, reach out to give a helping hand to your neighbor or a stranger at the store, and just to stop and take the time to care.

With that said, I am grateful for our local doctor’s that dedicate their time and lives to heal and look after our loved ones. Over the years, I have come to trust and build friendships with our family doctors and pediatricians. After all, they are there for you in times of need, to take care of those in your life that matter most. This month I am honored to spotlight local doctors and to feature their contributions to our community. Like our first responders, military, teachers, and volunteers, they are pillars of our community whose work enhances quality of life for all. We also have a wonderful feature this month on our local theater, StudioTenn. This group gives back to our community in so many ways. They bring family, friends and community together to enjoy emotional and heartfelt performances that touch on playwrights from yesterday and today. Their magic is created anew with each production, by repurposing stage and props, along with intricate handmade couture costumes. It’s yet another example of creative hands that warm the heart and bring our unique and special community together! Thank you always, for welcoming us into your home!

PUSH-UP INTO DOWNWARD DOG
Start in a push-up position. Shift your hips up and back into a downward dog position—high into the air, making a triangle with your body. Hold the stretch for 3 to 5 seconds, then shift your weight forward, returning to push-up position and lower into a full push-up. DUMBBELL SHOULDER PRESS ON STABILITY BALL

apart. Lift the dumbbells so they rest on the top of your shoulders and your forearms are parallel to the wall in front of you. Engage your core and sit up tall. Press the dumbbells up over your head, fully extending your arms. Then, lower. DUMBBELL ONE-ARM ROW IN THREE-POINT STANCE
Get into a three-point stance by placing one hand on a couch or bench, placing your feet hip-width apart and bend over, hinged from your hip. With a dumbbell in your other hand, pull your elbow toward the ceiling, keeping your shoulder blades pulled back. When your elbow is fully flexed, lower the dumbbell with control. Be careful not to shrug your shoulder or rotate your torso. Think of starting a lawnmower to perform this pattern. RUSSIAN TWIST WITH PRESS Russian Twist With Press
Sit with your knees bent and heels on the ground. Keeping a tall posture, lean back to a 45-degree angle. Hold one dumbbell by the ends at your chest with your elbows tucked at your sides. Then, keeping your chest up, rotate to one side and press the dumbbell up and away from your chest. Pull it back in, and repeat on the other side.

SIDE PLANK WITH ROTATION
Lie on your side with your elbow propped up under shoulder and your hips, knees and ankles stacked in a straight line. Engage your obliques, lift your hip off of the ground and reach your top hand straight up toward the ceiling. Then with control, rotate your body by moving your top arm down and setting it next to your other arm so they are perpendicular. Continue to roll your body so it is facing the opposite direction that you started, continuing to keep your hips off the ground. Repeat, side to side. NuBody Experience NuBody Concepts brings innovative plastic surgery to Middle Tennessee.
W
PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY SHATERIAN ho hasn’t felt frustrated with their love handles, muffin tops, saddlebags, bra bulges, male breasts, or any other body part where the curves aren’t right or the skin is saggy? When it comes to our
appearance, we are often our own worst critics. While true beauty lies inside of us, it is a fact that when we look better,
we feel better. And this added confidence goes a long way toward making us enjoy life and become better people. No one understands this better than the staff of doctors, nurses, and aestheticians at NuBody Concepts, a Brentwood plastic surgery practice that has been helping women and men gain more confidence in themselves with a range of custom-tailored body contouring services. “I will debate with anyone that when we feel good about ourselves and our bodies, we are happier,” says Dr. Joseph Greco III, Chief Medical Officer at NuBody Concepts. “What we do puts smiles on people’s faces and makes their lives more fulfilling.” So how do you go about finding the happiness that comes with a better body? There are many ways you can enhance your contours, from non-invasive treatments such as Botox and Juvederm injections against wrinkles, all the way to advanced plastic surgery like breast augmentations and tummy tucks. The sweet spot, as evidenced by the most popular procedures at NuBody Concepts, may very well be in the middle: minimally-invasive procedures such as liposuction and non-surgical facelifts that don’t involve a scalpel or the cutting of skin, but are much faster and more effective than non-invasive methods like fat freezing that often need a series of repeat appointments. It is often the first step in your body-contouring journey that is the hardest. Take Amanda, who recently had a liposuction procedure at NuBody Concepts. “I was not happy with the extra weight I was carrying in my midsection,” says Amanda. “It made me feel frumpy and uncomfortable in my clothes, especially my jeans.” Many women – and men – feel this way. They are frustrated when they hit a diet and exercise “plateau” where nothing they do seems to 24

rank Marghella was a high school football player when an injury threatened to cut short his career. But it was his recovery that
not only got him back on the field but also inspired him to pursue a career in chiropractic. “I was able to stay healthy the last two years of high school and became captain of the team,” he says. “Without my weekly chiropractic sessions, I would never have been able to play at such a high level. I was impressed that someone could heal without the use of drugs or surgery and I thought it would be a profession where I could help my family as well as the community.” “Dr. Frank,” as his patients know him, moved to Nashville in 2007 to begin his chiropractic career. He opened his own practice, Ideal Health and Wellness Center, in 2015. In addition to chiropractic, the clinic also offers Lipo-Laser and brain tap services. “I wanted a place where people could go to reach their true health potential,” says Dr. Frank. “ A 36-year-old native of Massapequa, N.Y., Dr. Frank and his wife, Jaima, have two young daughters. He closely follows his hometown New York Mets and New York Giants and is passionate about pizza and bagels from Manhattan, stating that those treats, “have to be the real thing.” One thing that he enjoys about his adopted hometown is the sweltering summertime heat and humidity. “People complain about the heat but after living in New York most of my life, I don’t mind it.” April 2017 | Franklin Lifestyle

STORIES BEHIND THE FOOD WE EAT ARTICLE ALLIE WINDOM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

hat did you have for lunch today? Do you know where it came from? How far did it travel to make it to your plate? According to Steven Bailey, Farm Director at Homestead
Manor in Thompson’s Station, our food travels an average of 1500 miles (and several days—or sometimes even weeks) before it’s prepared and served to us. And to make matters worse, most of us don’t have a clue as to where our meal's "journey" began. The concept of “farm-to-table” dining has become increasingly popular in recent years, and the movement seeks to close that knowledge and distance gap surrounding the food we eat. It’s gaining momentum and popularity all over the United States, and Bailey believes that’s for good reason. “There is something in us that wants to be connected to our food,” he says, and that visceral connection to nature is what he believes is driving the farm-totable movement and its constant growth.

Unlike traditional sourcing channels that cart frozen foods and ingredients across the country (or even the world), farm-to-table restaurants use ingredients from providers in their local community, state, or nearby region. More restaurants are hoping to create and foster relationships with local farmers, and Homestead Manor takes this notion one step further. The restaurant does in fact use meats from Middle Tennessee farmers, but they also operate a fully functioning farm right outside, and they grow all of their own produce and herbs on site. In stark contrast to the 1500-mile adventure of commercially processed and batched

some applause for those off stage. While the talented actors may vary with each production, it’s the talent behind the scenes and in the front office that has elevated this small, Franklin-based company into a regional powerhouse. This can be attributed in large part to a core trio of Nashville natives that has been with the company from the very beginning: creative director Matt Logan, managing director Jake Speck and technical director Mitch White. The hallmarks of a StudioTenn production – expertly cast roles, stunning sets and meticulously tailored original costumes – is the result of their collaboration. That it’s all executed with limited resources and repurposed materials makes the non-profit company’s onstage results even more remarkable. “What we’re able to pull off with the money we

have is insane,” says Speck. “We’re way ahead of similar companies in sales but way behind in contributions. It’s not normal by national standards.” Says Logan, “We work with tight budgets and

timelines. I always say you need money or time, one or the other. We have neither. So it’s always a riddle as to how we’ll get things done.” Logan and Speck founded the company in 2009. Speck was wrapping-up a phase of his career that saw him performing on Broadway and doing lots of regional theater, television and touring. Logan is a multi-faceted artist known for his creative thinking and his skills as a designer, director, illustrator and performer. But above all, he’s a storyteller. “To me, what goes on the stage is very personal and the audience is everything to me,” says Logan. “So as a director you want everything to ring true. The challenge is whether you want to go ‘poetic’ or ‘realistic.’ Do you want to design the character’s spirit or reality? But whatever you do, it needs to look good and be that the entire show.”

Bringing that vision to life is where White enters the picture. With the skills of a handyman, the knowledge of an engineer and the passion of an artist, he builds sets that are both riveting and rock solid. “I got my start by building houses with my brother,” says White. “So my sets are more
