Lifestyle Letter

Dear Franklin:

FEBRUARY 2017

F

irst, a quick word of thanks as I recall all of the amazing people we’ve met since starting Franklin Lifestyle. I’m thankful to you, our readers, for providing feedback and accepting us into your homes each month. I’m thankful for the outstanding support we’ve received from local businesses and organizations. And I’m thankful for our amazing team of writers, photographers, and advertising partners.

This has been an amazing journey and I’m happy to announce that because of our success with the publication, I’ve accepted a new position that provides me the platform to produce and develop publications just like ours across the nation. As my new position begins, I've brought in a dynamic publisher and media consultant, Christian Houston of Williamson County. Christian has been a successful media and advertising consultant for several reputable companies including The Tennessean, L’Oreal, Chanel and Armani. She has always had a dream of running her own publication, and she is very excited to get out to work with both Franklin and Brentwood communities. You'll find Christian's experience, creativity, and drive invaluable and I expect big things from our publication. This is our annual food issue and in it we’ve profiled some of the top local chefs Franklin has to offer: Skylar Bush of The Honeysuckle, Donnie Counts of Puckett’s Boat House and Rick Shannon of Jack and Jameson’s Smokehouse. We chose them for their innovative fare, hospitality and diversity of styles. The depth of culinary talent in this town is amazing! As you know, February is the month for Valentine’s Day and we think you’ll enjoy reading about one particular local love story, and the Valentine Gift Guide that features many local products and designers. We’ll also introduce you to Franklin-based artist/poet/ sculptor Cory Basil and take you on a tour of a rather unusual Man Cave.

COLD WEATHER TIPS TO PREVENT FREEZING PIPES

The health care industry supports more than 250,000 jobs in Middle Tennessee with an economic impact of nearly $39 billion. MyNEXUS, the leader in post-acute technology and home-based services, partners with insurer clients to reduce the risks and costs associated with home-based health care services, ensuring members get the right care at the right time. Founded in 2014, myNEXUS uses a proven clinical model to help members heal at home and avoid common, costly readmissions to health care facilities. “Providing individuals with more opportunities for home-based care is a rapidly growing segment of the health care system and is key in building healthier communities,” VanOsdale said. “Being a native Nashvillian,

expand its footprint in Greater Middle Tennessee.

• Know the areas of your home, such as basements, crawl spaces, unheated rooms and outside walls, that are most vulnerable to freezing. • Caulk around doorframes and windows and around pipes where they enter the house to reduce incoming cold. • Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines by repairing broken windows, insulating walls, closing off crawl spaces and eliminating drafts near doors. Close all air vents located in the foundation wall. • Protect your pipes. Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or use electrical heat tracing wire. Newspaper or fabric may also work. Remove, drain and store hoses used outdoors. • Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures to help keep them from freezing. • If you have an attached garage, keep its doors shut. Occasionally, plumbing is routed through this unheated space, leaving it vulnerable. • Know where your home’s primary water shut-off valve is located. If a pipe freezes or bursts, shut off the water immediately. • Drain in-ground sprinkler systems. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the best way to do this.

s an artist poet, author and actor, Cory Basil is a ‘jack of all trades’ who defies labels. If you aren’t familiar with his work, you might recognize his larger-than-life sculpture, Fishboy’s Perilous Putt, on display at the Nashville Sounds’

First Tennessee Park. A collaboration between Basil and local sculptor Brian Somerville, ‘Fishboy’ sits in full view at the eighth hole of the

miniature golf course down the right field line

“I had created the temporary sculpture of Fishboy for a retrospective exhibit of my career back in 2014,” says Basil. “I had grandiose dreams of making a giant Fishboy sculpture for the event, but we had very little time and very little budget. Brian and I built a massive sculpture out of Styrofoam and wood and canvas and paint and we were up all night, many nights. I had ambitions to find someone to fund finishing him so he could live somewhere permanently in Nashville. I knew it would take $10,000-$15,000 to finish him so he could live outside. Somerville had some space in the woods behind his house where

finish the project but he was unsuccessful until February last year. “It was a ‘who-would-have-thought?’ moment,” says Basil. “I’m very cool to see kids walk up to him and climb on him.” Basil made the move to the Nashville area from his hometown of Phoenix in 2007 to pursue his dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. “I was in a band as a teenager and just wanted to be the cool rock star,” he says. He had transitioned out of an insular life of a stifling, cult-like religion, survived a divorce and found Nashville to be a liberating place where his creative side could blossom. He subsequently fell into a publishing deal, and didn’t really think about pursuing his art until encouraged to do so by a friend in 2011. “She’d seen me post my work on various social media over the years and she challenged me to show publically,” he says. “She set me up with a show at Ugly Mugs in East Nashville and I accepted the challenge.” Basil put together a 35-piece collection of framed illustrations. Much to his surprise, he sold more than half the images when the show opened on a snowy winter night and it inspired him to do more shows. He went

from coffee shops and restaurants, to galleries and pop-up nights to opening his own gallery, Imaginebox Emporium, in downtown Franklin. The 39-year-old finds his inspiration everywhere and by just about everything he encounters – be it a simple moment in time, the beauty of a view, an old romance, history, music, etc. He doesn’t discriminate about what lights his creative soul on fire. He found his inspiration for Eternal Embrace from the ‘Lovers of Valdaro,’ a pair of human skeletons dating back almost 6,000 years, which were discovered by archaeologists in Italy in 2007. The two skeletons appear to have died facing each other with their arms around each other, bringing to mind a lovers embrace. “This was very inspirational to me,” says Basil. “We put so much effort here on Earth with love, with our families, with relationships, marriage, significant others. Essentially, we build everything on love. For me, I’ve always questioned what becomes of us after this. And right alongside that is what becomes of love after this? All the time, effort and energy and spiritual emphasis on connection – what happens to that as soon as we expire? “And those questions just dove off the page at me when I saw this photograph of the couple embracing. So with that, I created an entire series based around that question – ‘what is love and what happens to it when our time here on Earth is up?’” You can check out Basil’s extensive scope of work by visiting his gallery and studio, at 311 North Margin Street in Franklin. Or you can visit the studio online at CoryBasilArt.com. February 2017 | Franklin Lifestyle

“We chose to move here a little over a year ago because of the schools but soon found out that everything else is equally as amazing!”

ost working wives and moms are familiar with the hectic pace that comes with raising a family, maintaining a home and going to work. But few wear it as proudly as Hollie Alphier who lives in Franklin with her husband, Tony; his

son, James (6) and her daughter, Hayden (7). You could say that the West Tennessee native is at peace among the chaos. And she’d agree. This Real Wife wouldn’t have it any other way!

“I am a mess! I try to stay organized and keep things clean but somehow life gets in the way and my house, my car and my purse end up being a disaster! If I know you are coming over or riding in my car, I will do a crazy last minute clean so you would never know. Stop by unannounced and you will get to see the disaster!”

“I have been into audio books lately. I listen to them on my way to/from work and on my monthly trips to Memphis to visit family and friends.”

“When it comes to food, my cravings are very Southern. Anything fried is my weakness! I love wine, particularly reds! It is my go-to drink! I also love beers, especially trying new ones.”

Parting Thoughts

S

he was a Franklin native working at The Perch, and he was a Vanderbilt engineering student looking for a quiet spot to do his homework. She was the bubbly “coffee girl” with a contagious smile, and he was contemplative and methodical. From the moment she met him in the fall of 2013, Savannah knew there was something she liked about Kramer. He became a frequent face at The Perch, and after a few weeks of admiring from afar, Savannah decided to approach him while he worked. Her “hi!” was met with nothing but a blank stare. She asked him what he was working on, and after a long (and awkward) pause, he finally replied, “Uhh, homework.” Thankfully, their interactions improved after that, and Savannah offered him coffee on the house nearly every time she saw him at work. She liked him more every time she saw him, and her hints became more and more obvious. Kramer, however, chalked it up to nothing more than great customer service. Maybe it was his math homework consuming all his brain power, but after several months, he still wasn’t catching on. 2014 rolled around, and she hadn’t seen him in a while. She reached out to tell him that The Perch missed him, and he finally asked her on a coffee date. Two weeks later, “coffee girl” and the engineer-in-the-making were an item. They dated in Nashville for a year before Kramer proposed near the home they would call their own in the Melrose area. Their October 2015 wedding was held at the Cordelle in downtown Nashville, and wedding guests were treated to breakfast and coffee-- from The Perch, of course. These days, you’ll still find them frequenting the many coffee shops of Nashville. Savannah dreams up illustrations for her baby clothing company, Simon + Co., while Kramer works on the other side of the table. The two just welcomed the arrival of their first child, Sadie Lou. The couple want their daughter to grow up in Franklin, just like Savannah did, so they bought a house here just before she was born. “We’re those crazies who are moving to another town a month after the baby comes,” Savannah said. But Sadie Lou will be raised in the same town in which her mom grew up and her parents fell in love - and still do every day - over coffee. And for that, it’s worth all the crazy.

“We’re those crazies who are moving to another town a month after the baby comes.”
