Start 2024 off on the right foot with these zero-proof “cocktails.” After another season of decadence, January is the perfect time to imbibe some zero-proof concoctions. These alcohol-free drinks bring all the flavor, and the fun of cocktails, minus a headache the next day. Each of these libations has bright, interesting flavor combinations, created to awaken your palette while maintaining healthful benefits from the fresh ingredients. Here at Fort Collins City Lifestyle, we love everything to do with food and drink. While creating these drinks, it was all about finding fresh ingredients that pack a punch when it comes to health benefits, vitamins, and minerals. When you use fresh ingredients and fresh herbs, you’ll be amazed at how much flavor you get, without adding a ton of sugar. Two of the drinks have carbonation added, so you get the effervescence you crave from a soda, without all the chemicals and added ingredients that can be harmful to your health. Each drink has health benefits, and is as fun to drink as it is to make! CONTINUED >

Because it’s blended, the Thai Style Refresher tastes decadent. With the addition of mint and basil, you get so much flavor and brightness without the addition of extra sugar. Coconut milk is rich in antioxidants as well as vitamins C and E, which are great for your hair and skin. Mango adds a burst of fresh tropical flavor, with a host of vitamins and minerals like vitamins A, C, and K, potassium, beta-carotene, folate, and magnesium.

THAI STYLE REFRESHER ingredients: • Lime • Mint • Basil • Mango puree • Coconut milk • Lemongrass (for garnish • Coconut flakes • Honey directions: In a blender combine juice of half a lime, mint leaves, basil leaves, 2 cups of coconut milk, and about 1 cup of ice. Blend until smooth. Rim a glass with honey and then coconut flakes. Inside the glass, swirl mango puree around the sides. Pour in the mixture from the blender. Add a stalk of lemongrass for garnish.

Using some of the best Northern Colorado has to offer, the Colorado Cherry Company’s tart cherry juice gives this drink a great base. Pineapple juice brightens up the tart cherry, and the vanilla hints from the syrup bring all of the flavors together. This drink gives you a healthy dose of potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamins C and B6, all of which can give your immune system a much-needed boost this time of year.

C H E E RY C H E R RY ingredients: • Pineapple juice • Tart cherry juice • Pineapple and vanilla simple syrup (recipe below) • Club soda • Pineapple wedge for garnish

directions: In a mixing glass combine ¼ cup of pineapple juice, ¼ cup of tart cherry juice, and ½ oz pineapple vanilla simple syrup. Stir until all ingredients are mixed well. Pour over ice and top with club soda. Garnish the glass with a wedge of pineapple. For the pineapple vanilla simple syrup- In a saucepan combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Add about a cup of fresh-cut pineapple, and the inside of 1 vanilla bean. Vanilla extract will work also if you don’t have a vanilla bean, but the flavor is best with a fresh bean. Bring to a boil and let boil for 5 minutes. Let cool on the stove, then pour into a container. Store in the refrigerator.

The tart pink grapefruit pairs perfectly with the rich pomegranate in this drink to create a powerhouse of vitamin C. Floral notes from the elderflower tonic balances flavors and creates a unique flavor combination. Thyme is used not only to look beautiful on the glass but as an aromatic. As you take a sip, and smell the thyme, the delicate nuances of the elderflower pop out. The pomegranate seeds (nature's sprinkles) add a nice crunch, as well as heart-healthy fiber.

WINTER THYME ingredients: • Pomegranate juice • Fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice • Elderflower tonic (Fever Tree brand) • Thyme sprig for garnish • Pomegranate seeds for garnish • Lime and lemon wedges directions: In a mixing glass, combine 1/4 cup of pomegranate juice, ¼ cup of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice, a squeeze of both lemon and lime and a cup of ice. Stir to combine. Pour into a glass over ice and top with Fever Tree elderflower tonic. Garnish with pomegranate seeds and a sprig of fresh thyme.

FLYING THROUGH THE AIR IN “CORTEO”

ARTICLE BY ALLIE BELLOWS

B ACK STAGE | FI TNES S

WHAT HEALTH AND FITNESS LOOKS LIKE FOR A CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TRAVELING ACROBAT

Marie-Christine Bergeron has made a career out of flying through the air with the greatest of ease. As an acrobat in Cirque du Soleil’s “Corteo,” she wows audiences all over the world with the touring show. Bergeron sat down with us to talk about what it means to be an elite athlete with Cirque du Soleil and the roles of fitness, nutrition, and mental health in her work.

LS: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A TRAINER AND AS AN ACROBAT?

MCB: I am an acrobat and I’m also a strength and conditioning artist coach. I have been doing gymnastics since I was little, and then as a teenager, I was doing diving, going from state fair to state fair around the US. From there, I was meant to go into sports science at university. But instead of getting into university, I applied for circus school. In my last year of circus school, I auditioned for Cirque Du Soleil and I got in. CONTINUED >

When Corteo closed, I started working in a gym where I did my certification to become a personal trainer. When Corteo reopened, I ended up doing it online and in person. Those courses are quite rigorous, so it took me a while to complete. Then I did my nutrition course. I’m also a certified nutritionist.

LS: WHAT DO YOU DO AS YOUR DAILY FITNESS ROUTINE, BESIDES THE SHOW?

MCB: I usually come here [the gym] quite early during the day because I like to get a little workout done. Sometimes I workout with some of the artists during the day. If I have a training, I’ll warm up an hour before, do a bit of legs, and do a full-body workout just to make sure everything is awake and ready to do the training. I usually take a little break and eat at least two hours before the show. Then, 45 minutes before the show I’ll do another little 25 or 30-minute warmup, just to make sure everything is ready to go.

LS: CAN YOU SHARE SOME EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES OR ROUTINES TO IMPROVE STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY, AND ENDURANCE FOR THE PERFORMERS?

MCB: For the performance, it depends on which act. For example, the girls that are hanging from the chandelier, doing the splits. They need to be super strong in that split position. Every act is very particular with their needs in the circus. It’s not one workout for all. I love to train Rossiter [a series of deep stretches that remodel the body’s connective tissues, providing better mobility, more free movements, and pain relief]. I’ve learned it on tour with Corteo.

24

B ACK STAGE | FI TNES S

LS: HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE YOUR NUTRITIONIST KNOWLEDGE INTO WHAT YOU DO DAY TO DAY?

MCB: We’re always conscious of what we’re eating. I know if I eat a massive chocolate cake, as good as it is, I won’t be able to do a good job on the trampoline two hours later. For me, I would rather eat small meals often. Some people would rather not eat a lot during the day and have a big meal after the second show at night. There’s no magic formula or one-size-fits-all.

LS: HOW DO YOU WORK ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHILE ON TOUR?

MCB: This is a tough one on tour sometimes. A lot of people on the weekend go on long hikes. We also have a little climbing crew so they love to find walls where they go climbing or bouldering. People love to go camping on the weekend. Just escape. Most of us tend to wake up early and CONTINUED >

enjoy a bit of the outdoors. We’re looking forward to Colorado! This is our kind of place! We can combine work and also health and mental health.

LS: HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO PERFORM?

MCB: Of course! When I was eight years old, I saw the dress rehearsal of “Alegria” and I don’t remember anything of it, but I remember I felt like I was amazed at how transformed I was after seeing that show. When I was a teenager I got a ticket to see “Varekai,” and the same thing! I remember how I felt watching the show, amazed and impressed! It was magical. It was above and beyond. I hope the audience feels anything like that when they watch us. See Bergeron and company when they come to Loveland’s Blue Arena at the Budweiser Events Center with Cirque du Soleil’s “Corteo,” January 25th–28th.

SHRED the SLOPES ARTICLE BY ALLIE BELLOWS

Christian Jorgensen, owner of Mountain Rentals, has some sage advice for those looking to try some radical winter sports, “Do it!” His business, Mountain Rentals, makes it easy and affordable to try skiing, snowboarding, and even biking, with their Sno-Go bikes. Mountain Rentals has been a part of the Northern Colorado landscape for more than 40 years, which is interesting because it’s not exactly next to a ski area or resort. Until this year that is. Forget the I-70 traffic, there’s a new

spot in town and it’s perfect for beginners and families. Mountain Rentals has partnered with Hoedown Hill to make accessing winter sports easier than ever! Hoedown Hill is opening in Windsor and will feature three magic carpets to take skiers and snowboarders up the hill. Complete with ski school, Hoedown Hill is sure to be the most welcoming ski area for all skill levels. It’s a spot Jorgensen recommends for anyone new to winter sports. “Winter sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” he says. Jorgensen encourages anyone interested in trying skiing, snowboarding, or Sno-Go ski bikes, to come to Mountain Rentals to get high-quality gear, at an affordable price, and start shredding. With many memories of times on the slopes and hitting extreme spots in Colorado, like Mary Jane at Winter Park, Jorgensen thinks the best experiences aren’t necessarily the most radical ones. “I honestly think my most memorable moments are happening now,” says Jorgensen, “Being able to ski and snowboard with my kids is the best thing ever.” With only minutes in the car, instead of hours, it’s easy to stop by Mountain Rentals with the whole family, get all your gear, and then hit the slopes of Hoedown Hill. Winter sports have never been so accessible, easy, and affordable. Take Jorgensen's advice and get out there this winter!
