FROM HOUSE TO HOME DESIGNERS LEAVE THEIR EGO AT THE DOOR TO BRING DREAMS TO LIFE We’ve all heard the saying, “home is where the heart is,” but of course, that can mean a million different places. For some, the people in your life make a home, or perhaps it’s the neighborhood you grew up in. To the creators behind Niche Design house, home is a safe space to live your life and be your true, authentic self. This month, we interviewed the Niche Design House dream team, Becky Allsup, and Sara Ballenski for a chance to view the process of styling a home through the eyes of our favorite interior designers!

Niche Design House has been transforming homes since 2003. These two are a powerhouse, inspired daily through making clients’ homes reflect who they are. “It’s not my style, it’s their style and implementing it in a functional way,” Allsup states. The team describes their business as luxurious, quality, and full of integrity. While most design firms have a certain style they go for in every design they make, Niche stands out because it doesn’t have its own set look. “We don’t bring a cookie-cutter design to the table,” states Ballenski. “We figure

out who the client is and we design for that client is specific to them, there’s no one size fits all.” This dedicated approach bases an entire interior design on the individual’s input, stating that the home should reflect the owner and you shouldn’t be able to tell who the designers are. So what does it take to build a completely original design from the ground up? It all starts with strong project management, working through the details and knowing front to back how to make something work. Allsup further tells us that you should be able to run the project well and that it should be a fun experience. Thinking about a remodel? We asked what the latest design trends are coming

up today. “We are seeing a lot of functionality being more important than the aesthetic,” says Ballenski. Minimalist designs have been going away with the present trend of everyone working from home. No matter what design fits you, the relationship between you and the designer is everything! Creating true friendships with clients by the end of a job is one of the most enjoyable aspects of a Niche home design. Not only that but having a professional’s input on your home can further the overall comfort, functionality, and relationships within it! Allsup states that good conversation areas, color, and even lighting are a few things people don’t know they’re missing.

Interior design is a constantly evolving art that can take a home from old to modern, functional, and unique to you! Luckily, the amazing team at Niche Design House is right here and ready to take any home to the next level. CONTINUED >

5 NEXT LEVEL TIPS FROM ANTINORA REAL ESTATE

EXP E RT H E LP | R EAL ESTATE

Landing Your Dream Home

Whether you’re buying property to live on, as an investment, or selling the property you already have, the world of real estate can be overwhelming to say the least. Even more so in today’s highly competitive market. As we’re planning our own property goals for the next few years we had the opportunity to chat with Jillian Antinora, the brilliant luxury real estate agent behind Antinora Real Estate. After picking her brain for some quality advice, we wanted to be sure and share all of that wonderful information with you! So, here are Jillian’s top five tips. 1. Know what you want and what you can live without. - “Imagine your dream property… now think of the things you can be flexible on.” There’s no guarantee that your dream house will even be on the market when you’re looking to buy and flexibility can be key in making sure you have a pleasant home buying experience. Even if the property doesn’t have that pool or sun-room you had your heart set on, upgrades are almost always a good choice. 2. Be realistic about what financial decisions need to be made. - “Whoever is the most ready wins!” Will you need to sell your current home in order to upgrade or make the down payment you want to? Have you got a lender set up? The last thing you want is to find your

dream home and not be ready to make an offer. Often people don’t get the first home they try for because of this. 3. Have a plan, but be f lexible. Timing is everything. - “Plans make better buyers.” Moving out and into homes, selling ahead of time or after, finding a rental in between homes; there are so many things to be considered. Having cash on hand for fees, inspections or repairs and other costs should be an important part of any plan as well. 4. Do your research, know where you want to be and why. - Whether you want to be in the mountains in Evergreen, closer to city amenities in Fort Collins, or somewhere in between in the unincorporated county; it’s important to have a handle on both the where and the why’s. These details will help your agent to find the perfect property for you. They might even have good suggestions for similar areas that you hadn’t considered before. 5. Real Estate is an investment and the Front Range Market is a great opportunity for it. - Don’t wait! Everybody wishes they bought a house five years ago. Our region has been appreciating at one of the highest rates in the country and our growth is only being forecast to continue. “Real estate is the best leveraged investment out there, that is why I invest in it and you should too!”

OUTDOOR LIVING ARTICLE BY TYLER WESTON

Expanding your Home with a Well Designed Exterior

Designing your ideal home environment involves a whole lot more than just deciding what color to paint the walls or what furniture to buy, and the exterior of the house is every bit as important as the interior! Imagine your perfectly designed home sitting on a half-dirt lot surrounded by dying trees and an overgrown garden. Curb appeal is not to be neglected and even more now than ever people are expanding the way they approach their outdoor spaces to consider functionality and practicality. In pursuit of expert advice for exterior design we turned to Josh Yeater at All Terrain Landscaping. Their family business has been designing beautiful landscapes in the front range for nearly 20 years. “If you can dream it, we can figure out a way to build it,” Yeater says of their educated and confident approach to new challenges. Figuring out how to make things work is the fun part of the job for him. In terms of functionality the latest craze in exterior design is the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor cooking is no longer restricted to barbecuing and the like and for those who love to enjoy the fresh air when it’s warm outside this is the next logical step in hosting outdoor gatherings with friends and family. We’ve all been at the events where the party is split between in and out, often as a symptom of one or more people preparing food. From built-in grills and smokers, all the way to sinks, flat-tops, and refrigerators, there really is no limit to what you can do to elevate your

20

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN

outdoor gatherings and cooking experiences. You can even go so far as to add a covered patio or shade structure with smart lights and outdoor speakers added for extra ambiance and heaters to extend the season. “They lend themselves to a lot of possibilities,” Yeater said about the outdoor structures. Another growing trend in Colorado landscape is water-conscious design. Low flow water features, native plant and rock design, drought tolerant grasses and perfectly optimized, smart sprinkler systems are here to stay while immense green fields of grass and artificial ponds are going by the wayside. Simply put, it’s bad economics. In an arid environment such as ours the cost of watering big lawns or poorly selected, ornamental plants can become absurd quickly. What’s more is a water conserving design helps to ease the strain on local water resources. Rock features and appropriate plants can offer a beautiful and mindful solution to mitigating the issue. “There are ways to incorporate it into the landscape to make it flow,” Yeater told us of the growing trend towards native growing species of plants. No matter what your perfect outdoor space looks like there’s no better time than now to start considering your next outdoor project. Planning makes perfect in this arena and even if you’re calling in the professionals to get it done you’ll want to get started early to avoid losing too many perfect summer days to a less than perfect back-yard retreat.

On Display MASK UP WITH FORT COLLINS MUSEUM OF ART

Every year at the Museum of Art Fort Collins (MOAFC) “Mask Up” has a different meaning when the Eye Center of Northern Colorado Masks Exhibition & Online Auction makes its appearance. For eighteen years artists, a majority of which hail from Northern Colorado, have been expressing themselves through this unique medium. Not only to scratch that creative itch but also to help support the MOAFC’s mission, “to spread the power of visual art.” The exhibition came into being nineteen years ago when Gary Hixon an interior designer, Paula Edwards a MOAFC board member, and Molly Babcock an art teacher got together with a plan to “pull [the museum] back from the brink,” says MOAFC Executive Director Lisa Hatchadoorian. Nearly two decades ago the museum was in rocky fiscal waters and they needed to find something to “anchor” their fundraising. Thus the Mask Exhibition was born. CONTINUED >

Masks have been an artistic and spiritual medium for millennia and can be found in various cultures. Even dating back to the Stone Age, according to Britannica. They have served a variety of purposes including, discipline, protection from the elements, or even to symbolize a leadership position within society. The masks that will be on display this April may not carry those specific meanings to the artists who created over 200 different pieces for this year’s exhibit. Like the one submitted by the Academy of Arts and Knowledge, “The kindergarten through 5th-grade visual art students at Academy of Arts and Knowledge Elementary School directed, designed, and painted our mask, Plectiartem, to celebrate in-person learning.” The thoughtful mask name combines parts of the Latin words complecti, meaning to entwine or embrace, and artem meaning art. They do, however, hold a special meaning to the MOAFC and the larger artistic community of Northern Colorado. Not only does the public have the opportunity to experience the creativity that goes into creating these masks by attending the exhibition, but also to purchase them at auction. The mask exhibit is a multi-faceted fundraising program that includes support from sponsors and donors alongside the funds raised through the online auction. All of the proceeds, which total more than 1.7 million dollars to date, from the exhibit go back into funding future programming at the museum. “Basically everything that we do as a museum, the exhibitions that we host and bring in, the programs that we do, our education space, the programs, and workshops,” Hatchadoorian explains. “So everything that is public-facing [is funded through the yearly mask exhibition].” The masks themselves are also made locally. Chris Wanner, an artist and a professor at Colorado Early Colleges, created over two hundred masks the summer prior. He uses molded clay that is then kiln fired and shipped to the artists that signed up to participate. If you’re interested in learning more about the process behind the creation of the masks you can visit the MOAFC’s website where they have a video of Wanner creating the masks by hand. All of this combines into the museum’s most popular exhibit which Hatchadoorian attributes to the support it gives back to the organization. If you want to experience the exhibit, or have the possibility to snag one of the unique pieces for yourself, visit the MOAFC when “Masks” opens on April 1st throughl May 6th.

INTRODUCING THE HELPERS AND DOERS MAKING OURS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO LIVE

Every community has those special people that help it to shine its brightest, the ones who go out of their way to improve the places they love for everyone. These are the people Mr. Rogers liked to call ‘the helpers’ and we love when we get to shine a light on them. This month we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Fisher, a third generation Colorado native from just down the road in Greeley. Fisher has always been interested in providing a safe environment for his neighbors, his nearly three decade long career in law enforcement

Jeff Fisher

is clear enough evidence of that. Law enforcement, much like many of Fisher’s other roles, comes down to serving the community. Whether he’s working with Loveland PD, managing affairs in his current position as the Deputy Chief of Police in Louisville or fulfilling his duties as a member of the City of Loveland Planning Commission, it all boils down to finding the most effective way he can serve his community. In a true utilitarian fashion Fisher tells us, “I want to provide as much good as I can for as many people as I possibly can.” Having not only grown up here but also raised his daughters here, Fisher understands the complexities of life on the front range. Serving both rural and urban populations over the years. Fly fishing, camping, and hunting in the wild places that all Coloradoans keep in their hearts, and always advocating for the rights of his neighbors, he is a prime example of the Colorado mindset: finding peace in nature and sharing it with the world around you.
