Owltree Farm had its trial run last year, and while a late freeze did some damage to their fruit tree’s available harvest, they’re confident that they’ve fine tuned their processes and setup for success in their first year with members. While the operation is relatively small right now, they’ve got their eyes set on the future. Creating more diversity in what they plant and offer, maybe raising hogs, adding more greenhouse space, and scaling up their operation to support more membership. “We want to feed the masses,” Beardmore says of their plans for the farm, noting that their labor intensive methods create a premium product, “we still want to make it accessible but sometimes it can cost a little bit more.” Additionally the pair hope to create more community around their farm. Welcoming members and non alike to come visit on any given Saturday, they hope to help educate people about regenerative farming practices and eventually host farm-fresh community dinners, incorporating local chefs and other local producers to create an entirely locally sourced meal. Their passion for farming, food, and community are crystal clear and taking root with every plant. “It’s the experience of it,” Carlson says, beaming, “talking to your farmer and seeing the garden, you can hang out and be a part of it. You don’t get that even at a farmers market, definitely not a grocery store.”

MUCH MORE THAN FOOD AND BOURBON STREET, BUT WHAT A WAY TO START. JUST WHY IS NEW ORLEANS CALLED THE “BIG EASY?” A local man explained it well. “No one is in a hurry here. We don’t take one day at a time, we take each hour at a time,” he quipped. Indeed, even the street people seem rather languid in ‘NOLA,’ as it is also affectionately called. “How y’all doing,” one called out affably to us one morning as we walked by him, on our way to stand in line for those “world famous”beignets at Café du Monde.

Fort Collins Lifestyle | April 2021
It’s hard to believe that New Orleans, where anything goes and anyone feels at home, was once a bastion of rules and regimens, under French rule, which ended in 1812 with the Louisiana Purchase. Today’s “Big Easy,” is happily booming in tourism, jobs and rebuilding after the devastation of horrific Hurricane Katrina, back in 2005. But this is a city built and fortified by resilience – and its residents and visitors are passionate in their loyalty. Katrina still works her anguish – with just about anyone who lived through it wanting to tell their stories, and yet not wanting to tell them. The trauma of having endured such a tragedy lingers and is movingly expressed at the ‘Living with Hurricanes: Katrina

The lobby sets the somber mood, with colored stripes on the wall depicting the water levels reached by the rising waters, while the ceiling is hung with hundreds of aquamarine glass bottles filled with notes, in homage to the 1,500+ who perished, mostly by drowning. Local celebrity Fats Domino’s piano is displayed upended here, as it was found after the flooding – a baby grand Steinway, destroyed beyond repair. A placard speaks to the “spirit of resilience and a profound sense of place that has carried us through.”

and garden viewing for nearly two hundred years, but now, other areas such as Uptown and Bywater are popular for viewing as well. Magazine Street, at the edge of the Garden District, is up-and coming stylish, with new boutiques and bistros opening constantly. Just about everywhere, look up and you’ll see Mardi Gras beads hanging on light poles, tree branches, and power lines. After all, the wondrously festive Mardi Gras is yet another defining feature of New Orleans. If you are not visiting during the raucous insanity and full-out fun of pre Lent Mardi Gras festivities, be sure to take in a visit to the permanent Mardi Gras exhibit, also at the Presbytére. With extensive displays of costumes, floats, history, accoutrements, etc., dating from the early twentieth century, one could easily spend an hour or two mesmerized by the extent of involvement in a one-week festival that takes a full year to plan and prepare. It’s so big in Louisiana that in most areas, schools are closed for Mardi Gras week – even some universities. For those who want even more, take in Mardi Gras World, a cavernous showplace of Mardi Gras floats, costumes and regalia from decades past. New Orleans well deserves its reputation for being a culinary capital – with influences from French, Cajun, Creole, African and many other cultures, and some of the best loved chefs in the world calling it home. Visitors will be letting those belts out a notch or two, whether dining on Trout Almondine or fresh oysters at one of the elegant classic establishments like Antoine’s or Arnaud’s, or scarfing down hefty po’boys and spicy gumbo at any of the more downhome cafes throughout the city.

The National World War II Museum is regularly listed as the top attraction in New Orleans by Trip Advisor readers. Founded by author and historian Stephen Ambrose, the enormous facility tells the story of America’s involvement with World War II interactively and creatively, through film, models, posters, weapons, letters etc., in an exemplary set of permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as the current display honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and Black Seabees. www.nationalww2museum.org/visit/ exhibits/special-exhibits There’s so much more to do and see – the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, City Park, plantation tours, swamp tours, music venues like the intimate, no-cover Irvin Mayfield’s The Jazz Playhouse, antiquing on Royal Street … the list goes on and on. There is simply nowhere else like New Orleans – where just doing nothing feels like doing so much! www.neworleans.com

EcoFriendly Oven Cleaning DIY
DO YOU HAVE A SELF-CLEANING OVEN? If yes, after using it is your oven window dirty? Here is a tutorial on how to clean your oven window on the inside without the harsh chemicals. Safer for you, and our environment! Disclaimer - I have tested this method many times with great success. If your oven is really dirty, it may take more than one time to get it clean. WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
+ Baking Soda + Water + Squirt Bottle + Old wash cloths & towel + Optional – painters tape THE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. I recommend laying an old towel on the floor under your oven door for anything that spills over. This will help with the mixture mess and any crumbs or food particles while cleaning. It helps with floor clean up, and protects your floors. 2. If you have vents on your oven door, cover them with painters tape so nothing will get inside the door. Many people complain about food and items between the oven windows. Covering this vent while cleaning will stop more from getting in there. There are many tutorials out there for cleaning between your widows, be cautious as many warranties are voided if you open your oven door to clean between them. CONTINUED >

ECO-FRIENDLY OVEN CLEANING (CONTINUED)
3. Sprinkle baking soda onto the oven window. You don’t need a ton, just make sure there’s enough to help scrub the window. You can always add more as well. 4. Put water in a squirt bottle, and spray the baking soda with it. You want the baking soda to get damp but not drenched. You are making a paste. 5. Get an old wash cloth wet and squeeze out the excess water. You could also use a scratch resistant scrub pad. You want to avoid making scratches on your window. 6. Start lightly scrubbing the paste with the damp washcloth. Gentle scrubbing is fine, better for your window to resist scratching, and it doesn’t have to be hard scrubbing. It shouldn’t take a lot of effort which is nice. 7. Keep working around the glass, and I like to do small circular patterns. If you see a black spot, put a little paste on it and let it set for a few minutes allowing the mixture to loosen the food particles. Next scrub at it a bit, and it shouldn’t take a ton of effort. If it’s not coming up easily, simply put more paste on it and let it sit a bit longer. I like to scrub the black metal around the window to clean that up as well. 8. Now it’s time to clean up your mess. Use a small broom and dust pan, or you could wipe it up with a damp rag. This is to remove the worst of it all. You’ll be thankful right now you placed the towel under the door on the floor. 9. Wipe up the extra mess of baking soda. I did this a couple times. 10. When I thought I had most of the baking soda paste cleaned up, I got a fresh washcloth wet with clean water, squeezed it out, and wiped it one more time. *After your first cleaning you might see a white film show up on the door and or window. This is just residual baking soda that didn’t get removed. Simply wait for your oven to cool, and wipe up with a clean damp cloth. I am very pleased with how easy this was and how clean my window got with very little effort and no harmful chemicals.

Benefits of a
chemical-free home
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.
ARTICLE BY HAYLEY HYER
If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.
30
Fort Collins Lifestyle | April 2021
DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.
DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!
Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap
+ Essential Oils + Water
Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out. DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

While these three recipes give you a great start, that's definitely not all you can do to kick the chemicals out of your home. For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with like-minded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!
