ESS BEAN LOVES THE WAY MURALS CAN BRING SO MUCH

HAPPINESS TO A SPACE. When she first moved to Fort Collins eight years ago from her hometown, Peoria, Illinois, Bean donated her talents to transform the outside of Animal House Rescue (which has since moved and changed its name to Animal Friends Alliance). “It was just a boring, sad, cinderblock building and to add some paint to it isn’t hard, but it adds so much life to that building,” Bean said. Since then, she’s brought life to electrical boxes, business interiors, and many walls in people’s homes. Recently, she painted a nursery to look like the kind of Colorado mountain scene reminiscent of a trucker hat and a sunroom ceiling that feels like you’re looking up at the treetops from a hammock.

“I had a fear of sharing what I would want to paint because I wasn’t ready to share that I had bipolar disorder with other people.” She

murals in 2005, when she was in high school, and until recently, she was happy to exclusively paint other people’s ideas. It felt much safer than showing the world what she wanted to create. “I had a fear of sharing what I would want to paint because I wasn’t ready to share that I had bipolar disorder with other people,” Bean said. “It doesn’t have a good reputation,” she laughed. Her diagnosis is bipolar 2, which mostly manifests on the depressive side, without the mania of bipolar 1. “Commission work was great because it pushed me outside of my box so much and taught me so many techniques that I wouldn’t have tried if it wasn’t asked of me,” she said. But over the years, her need to create more personal work kept growing. Then in 2019, she had two hip surgeries

to correct a genetic deformity she didn’t know about until things started to fall apart. Unable to get on a ladder to paint murals during six months of recovery, she started her Emotions collection. “I finally came up with this idea of how to express emotions in paintings,” Bean said. “Not evoke it or use it as a backdrop for my image but to just solely express that emotion.” Each image is a mix of fine art imagery layered over a street-art style anatomical heart.

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED)

Exploring emotions deeply enough to create art was therapeutic. “To actually look at them and move through them and think about them so heavily that you can express them in a painting takes a lot of self-reflection, even just to come up with the concept,” she said. This month, from February 5th to the 27th, her original Emotions painting, Happiness, will be part of the “I Heart…” group show at 40 West Gallery in Lakewood. In September, she had finally recovered enough from her hip surgeries to get back on a ladder to participate in the Fort Collins Mural Project. “It was a big deal. My husband was pretty excited to see me up on a ladder,” she said, laughing.

“I want to take those hard emotions and give people that are going through those hard emotions something to look at to know that they’re not alone and that it’s okay to feel like that.” 10

FLORAL DESIGN CAN TAKE YOUR SPACE FROM MUNDANE TOO MONUMENTAL. Elycia Feldman, owner and designer at Wild Blossoms Studio is genuinely in love with her work. For Elycia, floral design is a deeply personal process. “ The landscape of Colorado is in my blood and a big part of the passionate heart beating beneath every design I bring to life. I pursue the use of unique and local plant life and challenge myself to create one-of-a-kind designs.” We’re excited to share a sneak peak of collaboration between Melodic View Photography & Wild Blossoms Studio that is set to premier later this month online. Follow their instagram @wildblossomstudios for more. Together with inspiration from the local flower community, we are building a beautiful floral guide. You can see me here concentrating really hard, building bouquets for hours, and loving every minute of it. Melody is the perfect guide and we have fun together creating and developing our art forms.

The fruit was even more succulent and varied at the beach resort – in fact, just as I was about to dig into the juicy mango on my plate one morning, a monkey leapt onto my table, grabbed the mango and sprang away in one fell swoop – the employees were frantic but we tourists just laughed. Hakuna matata to the mango-stealing monkey, and hakuna matata to me. I left Kenya with tears in my eyes for the warm, embracing Kenyans I had met. There’s nothing quite like seeing giraffes’ graceful forms far off in the distance – and knowing they are WILD. The cultures of eastern Africa are just as diverse and thrilling – Masai and Samburu peoples living in their ancient lifestyles of dung huts and herding cattle, dressed in what must be the most colorful garmets I’ve ever seen. The villagers have adapted to tourism while keeping their culture virtually intact. They invite visitors to enter a hut and hear a short talk about their lifestyle, while the women outside lay out their handicrafts for sale. In the evenings before dinner, safari guests can meet in the lodge for a slide presentation and lesson about the local customs or wildlife, while enjoying cocktails and appetizers. If desired, the lodges will prepare ‘bush dinners,’ beautiful, magical events in secluded areas

DIY MANTEL GARLAND IT’S FEBRUARY, THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER, SPRING ISN’T HERE YET, AND SOMETIMES WE ARE PRONE TO THE WINTER BLUES. I have an activity that everyone can get in on, can brighten your home, and you only need 2 items. I was at my friend Mary’ s beautiful home in historicPhoenix, AZ. She has several fireplaces and one of our projects was to decorate one of her mantels in her home. I told her I was going to decorate it with coffee filters and a strand of lights. I don’t think they really believed me, but I really meant it. I joked and called it my MacGyver mantel garland. This is a standing joke because Mary once said I could make a coffee table out of a car engine. I told her since my dad owns a body shop, I probably really could do that and told her how. “Find an unusual object? Chas will quickly come up with 100 uses for it.

A FUN & CREATIVE DECORATION

GARLAND ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY CHAS GREENER

I started by laying a strand of lights across the mantel. If you’re

worried about the strand of lights staying on, add a Command

Hook to either side of your mantel on top, and hook your lights into place. This will help hold your lights into place so they don’t fall off and take all your decorations with them. I pressed in the center of the coffee filter, and twisted the bottom like in the pic-

ture. I placed the coffee filter in between the wiring. I continued doing this all the way across the mantel and down the sides. On top I filled in extra filters around to fill in the space. This project was quick, easy and it only took 1 package of coffee filters, one strand of lights. “The coffee filters look like a string of petticoats. How beautiful would this be in a girl’s room? I’m not sure you can dye coffee filters but I’m imagining pink ones like a ballerina’s tutu. This garland also reminds me of a feather boa~with all its simplicity but impact.” Mary said when the project was complete.

This DIY garland could be easily adjusted by using brown, non- bleached coffee filters as well. Perhaps you want to do this project in the spring or summer. You can spray the white coffee filters with a mixture of water and food coloring, and let them dry. Re-create this coffee filter mantel garland using your own creative ideas, perhaps even incorporate dried flowers from Wild Blossoms Studio! CityLifestyle.com/FortCollins
