PAINT POURING SOAP DISPENSER (CONTEMPORARY OPTION) Do you remember paint spinners? They were usually at festivals and carnivals. You’d place a canvas or paper on a spinner, while it spun around you would squirt different colors of paint on it. The paint would pull off in all directions from the spinning force. Paint pouring can give that same effect and you can do it on so many different surfaces. I the Mason jar upside down on a Styrofoam cup, and place that on top of wax paper on a baking sheet. I used Folk Art Pre-Mixed Pouring Paint in the colors Bright Blue, Black, and Red. I squirt some of one color into a cup, then poured the next color on top, then the next color. I repeated this process until I felt I had enough paint to coat the whole jar. I did not mix them, I just layered the paint on top of each other. Making a small circle with the cup, I poured the paint onto the Mason jar. I continued doing this until the whole cup was covered. If any bubbles showed up, I poked them with a craft stick. You could use a tooth pick as well. I let it dry completely.

FAUX STAINED GLASS SOAP DISPENSER (TRADITIONAL OPTION) Stained Glass Mason jars cost more than regular Mason jars. Sure you could buy them as there are a couple options out there. What if I told you that you could make them any color you want with a little Mod Podge and food coloring? I put enough Mod Podge in a cup that I felt would coat the entire jar. I added several drops of food coloring, and then slowly mixed the color into Mod Podge. Using the same technique as the paint pouring, I poured the Mod Podge mixture until the entire jar was covered. I let it dry completely. 12

FOR ALL 3 MASON JAR PROJECTS: After all of the mason jars are dry, I would recommend sealing these one once dry or using dishwasher safe Mod Podge. I purchased stainless soap dispenser kits online. I put them together and twisted them onto the mason jars. They’re ready to be used and or gifted. You can put more than just soap in your dispenser! I also put Castile soap in ours for hand soap, body wash, & face wash. For my face moisturizer I use Organic Avocado Oil as recommended by my oncologist to stay away from added hormones and chemicals. I place this in my dispensers as well. I put dish soap in one and leave it by the sink to wash dishes. I put homemade laundry soap in it to it for spot treating and stains. Other dispenser uses include cooking oil, rubbing alcohol, and nail polish remover. Besides soap, can I put hand sanitizer in a soap dispenser? Yes, we do that at our house. Want a hand sanitizer recipe? HERE IT IS:

+ Mix together 2 parts (60% or higher) rubbing alcohol with 1 part Aloe Vera gel.

+ Place in a container and it’s ready to use. + Other Mason jar uses include seasoning dispenser, drinking glasses, coin or money jar, keep sake jar, make a candle holder, food storage, food mix gifts (cookie mixes), vase, storage, solar lights.

O

NE OF DENVER’S CROWN JEWELS, THE DENVER BOTANIC GARDENS OPENED IN 1951 IN THE CAPITOL HILL NEIGHBORHOOD

IN THE HEART OF DENVER. It is celebrating almost 70 years of existence. and is considered one of the top botani-

cal gardens in the United States, listed as #6 of attractions in Denver on TripAdvisor. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Gardens’ living collections feature specimens from the tropics to the tundra, showcasing plants chosen to thrive in Colorado’s semi-arid climate. This 24-acre urban oasis offers unique garden experiences, as well as world-class education and plant conservation research programs. The Gardens is a unique living museum where horticulture, plant conservation and preservation, mycology, art, education and special events come together to engage and document human relationships with plants and the larger environment. The Gardens would seem almost unrecognizable to those who first visited in its early years and have not returned until now. Considered one of the finest Botanic Gardens in the nation, this lush and varied paradise, with both indoor and outdoor areas, three dining options, as well as a delightful 3-acre children’s area (which opened in 2010) easily takes at least 2-3 hours to fully experience and enjoy. Featuring 18 arid, climate-conscious Gardens of the West, such as Bristlecone Border, Sacred Earth, Dryland Mesa and Ornamental Grasses, visitors can meander from one to the next, then move on to the ‘Internationally Inspired Gardens,’ such as the South African Plaza and the Bill Hosokawa Bonsai Pavilion and Tea Garden, and then venture to the Ornamental Gardens, especially delightful in the warmer months, which include many favorites, such as roses, daylilies and irises. One of my personal favorites is the Sensory Garden, which employs architectural features and sensory plantings to enable people of all ages and abilities to interact with plants. Specialized gardening techniques and structures help to minimize physical barriers and maximize people’s abilities. Another crowd pleaser is the Ellipse, next to the Romantic Gardens, with its splendid array of roses from May Bonfils Stanton collection, as well as the beloved Dale Chihuly blown glass sculpture, “Colorado.”

On September 26, the Gardens opened the Freyer-Newman Center, the final installment of its four-phase, 13-year Master Development Plan which began in 2007. The Center is designed to showcase the Garden’s celebration of both science and art. Ground was broken in May, 2018 for the LEED GOLD building and opening was delayed due to COVID-19 concerns. “This is the pinnacle of our Master Plan,” says Erin Bird, Communications Manager. The building, with its airy, Scandinavian modern vibe, is built with sustainable woods, bamboo, tile, and artistic details such as arching beams and enormous windows providing ample sunlight. It provides more accessible and enriching public engagement, including an auditorium, four art galleries, the expansive Helen Fowler Library, six classrooms, a coffee shop operated by Copper Door Coffee Roasters (accessible to the public without admission to the Gardens) and 144 staff parking spots. Important plant science research and conservation efforts will grow with more advanced laboratories and larger herbaria for vascular plants, mushrooms and slime molds. All signage is bilingual in English and Spanish, along with Braille postings. “As one of the first 2017 General Obligation Bond-supported projects to break ground, the Freyer - Newman Center is an outstanding example of how these community approved investments can move a project to reality and enhance our world-class museums and culturals,” said Mayor Michael B. Hancock. “Institutions like Denver Botanic Gardens provide opportunities for our residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn, have fun and explore together.” 18

The art galleries in the Freyer-Newman Centerwill have temporary exhibitions with these three in place for now: GHOST FOREST: WORKS BY MELANIE WALKER Through December 6, 2020 Melanie Walker’s works on fabric offer reflections on the memories that connect us to wild places, and to one another. Walker is a Colorado-based artist whose work draws on analog photographic processes, digital art and mixed media. RAÍCES Y RAMAS | ROOTS AND BRANCHES Through February 28, 2021 Tony Ortega’s artwork celebrates identity and tradition to form a bridge between cultures in Mexico and the United States. Raíces y ramas explores the Chicano experience in U.S. culture, highlighting the role of place and landscape in connecting communities.. Inspired by his journeys across languages, cultures and ideologies[,] He is the recipient of the Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)

An excellent preface to the Churchill Wild adventure would be a visit to the huge “Journey to Churchill’ exhibit at the Winnipeg Zoo. Here, visitors can learn all about the creatures they’ll be seeing in the wild and view the orphaned polar bears that live there. Another worthwhile side trip would be to the new Canadian Museum of Human Rights -- emotionally stirring, provocative and incredibly rich in information and discussion. From Winnipeg, Churchill Wild’s various packages include the first and last night’s hotel and dinner at the well-appointed Grand Winnipeg Airport Hotel, round trip airline travel to Churchill, and finally a 30-minute small fixed-wing aircraft flight directly to the lodge (warning - if you get motion sickness, bring your meds!) Churchill is the polar bear capital of the world, with about 1,000 bears arriving there from late June to early autumn. They are in semi-hibernation, and have fasted for months, waiting for Hudson Bay, the largest watershed in Canada, to freeze over so that they can hunt for their main prey, young seals and beluga whales. There are an estimated five million seals in the Bay. Nearly 15,000 tourists from all over the world converge on Churchill each year from July to November, arriving only by air or train, to see the polar bears - almost all by tundra buggy, while some 600 or so annually prefer to view them on foot from Churchill Wild lodges. In 2015, two of Churchill Wild’s lodges (Seal River Heritage Lodge and Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge) were named as National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, a highly sought-after and respected distinction, given to hotels “that embody the values National Geographic and our travelers hold close… where the guiding principles are an innovative approach to sustainability and a strong commitment to protecting natural and cultural heritage, and where guests are treated to a rich array of meaningful experiences.” Mike Reimer, owner, says that the National Geographic affiliation is a “validation” that everything we do is right.”

24

Fort Collins Lifestyle | December 2020

“LEARNING HOW TO GUIDE WALKING SAFARIS WITH POLAR BEARS HAS BEEN AN EVOLUTION.”

Seal River Heritage Lodge is a well-designed, comfortable building with a modern, fully-equipped kitchen, cozy sitting room area with over-stuffed couches, telescopes and binoculars, wildlife and photography books and native art pieces and artifacts. The cuisine and baked goods (along with afternoon Apres’ trek cocktail hours) are surprisingly delectable and varied, considering the remoteness and difficulty in transporting goods. Each Churchill Wild day consists of morning and afternoon guided wildlife treks of two to three hours each through the beautiful fireweed-laden landscape and tidal flats. The spectacular morning sunrises reminded me of those beautiful posters at the dentist’s office, meant to distract us from our fear and pain. During breakfast, with mist rising from the newly formed ice over the Bay’s rocky coastline, the sky filled with shimmering light blues, grays and golds we’d gaze in wonder and search for wildlife in the distance. So far from light pollution, an added plus of staying at the lodges is that the Northern Lights are frequently seen - on our second night, we were called out to see a swirling, lava lamp-like show that lasted for hours. When I got too cold to stand outside, I escaped to my warm bedroom and sat on my window sill looking out at the lights - transfixed. During our four days at Seal River, I had seen many bears, but I was entranced by the “visit” of a curious, sweet-looking female, who arrived after breakfast on our last day. Just outside the chain-link fence surrounding the lodge, she approached closer and closer. Finally reaching the fence itself, her snout was perhaps three inches from the lens of one of our cameras, close enough for us to see the vapor of her breath and the whites of her eyes. I was so thrilled that I didn’t even notice my stocking feet on the icy ground at 0 degrees. “I don’t know how you staffers do this every day,” one of our group said, her eyes misting over. “This is so beautiful. I’d be crying every day with joy.”

THE NEW WILDERNESS BY DIANE COOK Living in an overpopulated, polluted metropolis, Bea realises she and her daughter cannot stay in the city, and so join a group of volunteers to take part in an extreme experiment. The group must settle in the Wilderness State, a huge, untamed expanse of land that has never been inhabited by humankind, until now. Dystopian novel The New Wilderness has been shortlisted for the Booker. The Booker Prize describes it as: “At once a blazing lament of our contempt for nature… and what it means to be human, The New Wilderness is an extraordinary, compelling novel for our times.”

MAYFLIES BY ANDREW O’HAGAN Andrew O’Hagan’s latest novel is inspired by real events, and the friendship between two men, Jimmy and Tully. In a small Scottish town in the 1980s, the two teenagers bond over their love of music and films, and a rebellious teen spirit. They share a magical, euphoric weekend in Manchester. Thirty years later, and Tully has some news. The Telegraph calls Mayflies “a delightful nostalgia trip of enduring friendship.” The Times says: “A joyful, warm and heart-filling tribute to the million-petalled flower of male friendship.”

MORE THAN A WOMAN BY CAITLIN MORAN The British journalist and author Caitlin Moran is already known for her funny, smart observations about girlhood and womanhood. Her 2011 book How to Be a Woman was hugely influential; her latest, More Than a Woman, is a reflection on what it means to be a woman in middle age. Themes include multi-tasking, caring for teenaged children, gender stereotypes and long-term relationships. The Observer says: “Moran proves herself, once more, a sage guide in the joys, as well as the difficult bits, of being a woman – of being a partner, mother, friend and feminist.”

As any avid book reader can tell you, immersing yourself in a great book can make your brain come alive. Did you know that when we read, not only are we improving memory and empathy, but research has shown that it makes us feel better and more positive too.
