LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Magic of the Season The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. My mom instilled in me a love for the holidays at a very early age. My family and I completely transform our home every Christmas season. We change everything, down to the plates and flatware. We have family all over the country, so we often spend our time traveling to Atlanta or Los Angeles, because being with the ones we love is most important! My brother has two very young children and seeing him and his family start new traditions and continue old ones is equally special. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Folsom has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

Home for the Holidays CURATING A FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE WITH LOCAL DESIGN EXPERTS

ARTICLE BY DESIGN SHOP INTERIORS PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE DIANNE AND STEPHANIE RUSSO

As lovers of home, we, at Design Shop Interiors, thrive during the holiday season. Curating a festive, yet familiar atmosphere is our expertise. We believe a home should be a place of warmth, comfort, and familiarity. This time of year, special touches like festive décor, scented candles, shimmering ornaments on a handpicked Christmas tree, and a table filled with hosting accessories add a touch of magic that can be felt throughout the home. Here are some new ideas as well as time worn traditions to think about when planning your holiday home:

14

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | HOME + DE S I GN

Try a minimalist approach to holiday décor. Partner brass candlesticks and fresh garlands; get creative with simple décor by pulling any décor, textiles, etc. that are red, green, or jewel toned and use them as decor. We love placing ribbon and ornaments in marble trays or vintage bowls to add a spark of festivity. Add stockings to your fireplace mantle - our favorites are vintage kilim. Our favorite holiday décor (it’s hard to pick) are ornaments and candles. Our favorites are brass candlesticks or clear glass hurricanes. Greenery truly elevates your home for the holidays. Garlands and pine branches. Hang ornaments from ribbon on light fixtures. We love a Christmas tree with cherished ornaments and an abundance of candles casting a warm glow with a great winter scent. Handmade stockings with delicate ribbon, dried floral embellishments, fresh pine garlands, and an arrangement that thrives throughout the entire season. Add coziness with beautiful throws with lots of layered texture.

More DSI tips for decorating your home for the holidays: Step 1: Move around your furniture and place your tree or trees. DSI will have 10 massive trees in the shop this year as part of their holiday decor. Step 2: Deck the halls! Add and style all décor and details with traditional items or newfound pieces. Fill consoles and shelves with a simple accent or an overflow of festivity. Step 3: Finish with floral installations around the home. Bring the outdoors inside with seasonal greens, florals, deep red vessels, and winter wreaths. At DSI, our take on Christmas is what we call vintage traditional. Coated in deep reds, layers and an assortment of vintage finds. Dishes, trays and platters you would sift through at your grandmother’s house. Nostalgic, traditional reds and greens, but deeper tones. Vintage antique brass tones give an old world feel. Think patina vintage bells. Use colors like ivory, deep reds and forest greens. This combination creates an elevated traditional Christmas.

“We love a Christmas tree with cherished ornaments and an abundance of candles casting a warm glow with a g r e a t w i n t e r s c e n t .” Other great holiday themes are: Mountain theme like Sierra Nevada or Truckee-inspired including pine cones, acorns, rustic accents, deep greens, reindeer, snow, and sleds. Scandinavian style featuring light woods, bright whites, and ivories. Sprinkle in hints of black and lots of clean lines for an appealing and simple design. A funky holiday theme can be wild and fun with a burst of color and mixed patterns. Play with the details using sparkly, bold, and worldly accents for a vintage-retro vibe. Add felt elements and animals for a touch of whimsy. A feminine holiday theme can be pretty and soothing. Use earthy tones, light pastels, sage greens, and baby

pinks in your color scheme. Sprinkle in delicate features, soft, etched dishware, feminine movement, velvets, and glass ornaments. Top it off with a glittery pink tree or a white tree with pink ornaments. Elegant and traditional, a European Farmhouse style Christmas can be warm and cozy. Use deep neutrals, browns, gem tones, and pieces that feel antiqued and layered. Add old world design with dark wood rocking horses and vintage nutcrackers. We hope you enjoyed these holiday design tips and ideas from Design Shop Interiors located in Granite Bay. HOLIDAY PARTIES REIMAGINED The Neighborhood Progressive Party

Holiday Charcuterie Board

Office Karaoke

ARTICLE BY CAROLINE SMITH

The holidays are a wonderful time full of cheer, celebration, and joy. Holiday parties are a staple of the season. However, for the hosts of large events and parties, the holidays can come with a bit of added stress. It's a big job to plan and host large events on one’s own. A great way to share the work of hosting while also being able to join in the fun is to have a neighborhood progressive party. CONTINUED >

“There’s a special joy to be found in providing people a space to get to know each other better and contributing to the unique party experience of a neighborhood progressive party.” Progressive parties are an emerging trend in the holiday party scene, and they take the pressure off of one person to host a party while allowing neighbors to meet and mingle with others in their area. Rather than one person being in charge of everything from drinks to dessert, the responsibilities and joys of hosting are divided among many. Friends and neighbors are invited to start at one house for drinks and maybe even an icebreaker game to get everybody talking or getting to know each other if some of the neighbors are new. You could meet a wonderful new friend bonding over a game of Scattergories. The group, then, ventures to another home for delicious appetizers that keep everyone satisfied until mealtime. This is a great opportunity to show off your holiday charcuterie board skills with a festive display of meats, cheeses, holiday candies, and nuts (see The Grazing Gouda article for ideas). Progressive parties can be great for showing off your hosting or cooking skills, but also for getting to know your neighbors on a deeper level. It's nice to know the kids that go to school with your kids, or that you and a neighbor, you hadn't met before, love to garden or go for morning walks. The main event is the holiday dinner house. Depending on the weather, this can be hosted inside or outside. You might need a few neighbors to help host this part of the evening. Depending on the size of the group, you can do a buffet or sit-down dinner. Include the kids in the hosting responsibilities by helping greet, seat, or serve the food. Laughter and cheery voices surround you while you pour a glass of wine, help yourself to some turkey and potatoes, and

20

watch everyone enjoy themselves. There’s a special joy to be found in providing people a space to get to know each other better and contributing to the unique party experience of a neighborhood progressive party. The final house serves dessert and evening beverages. Aromas of cinnamon and vanilla greet you at the door. This is a great time to share family recipes or holiday traditions of snickerdoodles, peppermint bark candy, or your grandma's recipe for Dutch apple pie. Winding down the party can be fun by including a white elephant gift or ornament exchange while serving hot toddies or a lovely local Port. You smile, knowing that whoever ends up with your gift will be walking home with a handwritten note and a beautifully scented citrus candle. You receive a pair of soft, warm slippers that were given by the neighbors across the street, and they will keep you comfortable throughout the winter. After an amazing night full of old and new friends, delicious food, thoughtful gifts, and endless laughter you can say with absolute certainty: that your neighborhood progressive party was a success. On a final note, the concept of progressive parties can be done at the office, going from cube to cube or floor to floor. Add in some Christmas carols or karaoke for stress-free fun. For the adults-only crowd, you could to progressive bars and restaurants. Picture starting with wine tasting at Crystal Basin, moving up to The Vine for tapas, having a buffet bbq at J.Wilds, then walking it off a bit on your way down to enjoy coffee and creme brulee at Scott's Seafood while watching the ice skaters under the holiday lights at the Roundhouse.

A Holiday Charcuterie Extravaganza TIPS FROM THE GRAZING GOUDA

22

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Marina Volkovas, owner of The Grazing Gouda, shares her tips for creating a beautiful holiday charcuterie board this season. 1. Choose a variety of cheeses, from soft to hard, and mix up the flavors and textures for a tantalizing taste experience. Don't be afraid to go for cheese with festive flavors like cranberry! 2. Give your board a seasonal twist by adding in fruits like juicy pomegranate seeds, fresh figs, and tart cranberries. 3. Bring on the meats! Add in different types like salty prosciutto, savory salami, and succulent ham.

4. Nuts about nuts? Toss in some almonds and walnuts to give your board a satisfying crunch and extra flavor. 5. Bread is a must! Serve up a selection of crackers and sliced baguettes to complement the cheese and meats. 6. Use small bowls or ramekins to hold spreads like honey, jam, or mustard for an extra kick of taste. 7. Sprinkle in some fresh herbs, like fragrant rosemary or earthy thyme, to make your board look (and taste) like a winter wonderland. 8. Get artsy! Arrange your ingredients in groups to create a visually stunning display. 9. Keep size in mind and adjust ingredient amounts to fit your board. 10. Most importantly, let your creative side shine and add your own personal flair to make your board one-of-a-kind.

For Festive Holiday Design boards, Marina recommends using Christmas cookie cutters for your cheese. For example, use a Christmas tree cutout for your brie cheese. You can also add fun festive cheeses that include cranberries or rosemary to enhance the seasonal flavor. Include Christmas cookies and treats on your boards as well. When making a board for 4-6 people, Marina suggests 3 different cheeses, and 2 types of charcuterie meats, and fill the rest with jams, olives, crackers, fruits, and nuts. Shop your pantry first, you probably have most of the dry ingredients already, then, shop locally for artisan cheeses and meats. Marina's favorite local spots to get great cheese and meats are Nugget and Whole Foods. She also shops seasonally and at farmers' markets in the warmer CONTINUED >

months. Nugget carries a large variety of cheeses and you can sample any item you want beforehand. Whole Foods usually does 12 days of Cheese Sale in December. A great opportunity to get discounts on high-quality artisan cheese. A tip for gifting a charcuterie board is to leave the crackers off of the board so that your guests can place it in the fridge and eat it when they are ready. That way everything stays fresh. If you want to make your gift a bit more special, you can also gift them a nice wooden board to display the charcuterie on, some cheese knives, maybe some pepper jelly, and a nice jar of honey. There are a few shops in Historic Folsom that specialize in locally made charcuterie boards, specialty meats, cheeses, olive oils, spices, candy, and garnishes to complete your own holiday boards. If you need to order a holiday charcuterie board or you want to take a class on how to do your own, check out The Grazing Gouda. TheGrazingGouda.com

With all-wheel drive capabilities, it offers exceptional handling and traction, making it suitable for various driving conditions. BMW introduced the 5 series to the world in the early 1970s. Now it’s being re-introduced as the ultimate “electric” driving machine. “I recently drove it for 5 hours at a BMW launch event under all conditions including on the track at Road Atlanta. Its electric acceleration, performance, and handling are unparalleled with anything I have ever experienced.” ~ Paul Suchanek, General Manager, Niello BMW Sacramento / Elk Grove BMW BMW's advanced battery technology ensures fast charging times and long-lasting performance. Additionally, the M60 features regenerative braking, which helps to maximize efficiency and extend the range even further. Inside the cabin, the M60 offers a luxurious and futuristic driving experience. The spacious interior is fitted with high-quality materials and features modern amenities. The driver-focused cockpit includes a digital instrument cluster and a large display, providing easy access to navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings. The 2024 BMW i5 M60 is a game-changer in the electric vehicle market. Feel free to add it to your Christmas list too. NielloBMW.com

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign

2023 30

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
