Publisher’s Letter

T

here is excitement in the air in Fishers. Can you feel it? Our kids are back to school, the leaves are starting to turn as the season begins to change, we are just a couple of months away from officially electing our first mayor and…it’s football season!

The thing I love the most about being a publisher is having such a wonderful opportunity to meet and engage even more people in and around Fishers. This is a great, great city. You see residents having fun all over town from playing and watching baseball at Billericay or now football at Mudsock field. The annual rivalry between Fishers/HSE is like the Hatfield and the McCoys on the field and in the stands. But it’s back to family afterwards. Just two great Fishers schools with terrific fans trying to win. There is so much to do and celebrate this and almost every month in Fishers. But this month at Fishers Lifestyle, we celebrate the beauty of the arts. In this issue, we have a wonderful article about the Purdue glee club with several members hailing from Fishers. We also introduce you to our very own Miss Indiana as well as a talented local family offering their talents to the community. I am proud to be the publisher for Fishers Lifestyle and look forward to bringing more exciting things happening to Fishers residents and businesses every month! Speaking of exciting things to do in and around Fishers, mark your calendars for our next magazine networking event! It will be held Wednesday, September 10 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at The Ambassador House. There will be plenty of good food provided by Epicureans as well as beverages by Little Miss Martini. If you are business still looking for a way to quickly reach 40,000 readers every month, I am looking for you to partner with me. You don’t want to miss this event! We have some exciting things planned in the coming months. So keep sending us those great ideas and keep reading!

Meet the Talented Audra Casterline FISHERS RESIDENT ACHIEVES LIFELONG DREAM WITH PAGEANT TITLE ARTICLE JEANNINE LEE LAKE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

udra Casterline has always dreamed of being Miss Indiana. When her dream came true and she was crowned at the pageant in June, she was literally flabbergasted. “I was very shocked because I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little girl,” she says. “I’ve stood there before and heard another girl’s name, so when I won, it was just a surreal moment.” Casterline, an Anderson University graduate, competed for the title with 58 other contestants from across Indiana. Each woman was judged on her interview skills, appearance in evening gown and swimsuits, talent and on-stage question. Audra sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The pageant was held at Zionsville High School Performing Arts Center and when the announcer said that Presley Moreland was runner-up, Casterline’s knees buckled with excitement. Her family was thrilled, too. “I was so excited for her,” says her sister, Amy Schecht, who also competed in paegants. “I’ve competed as well, so I know it’s such a huge honor. Audra is an amazing person and my whole family is so very proud of her.” Casterline, 24, will go on to represent Indiana in the Miss 10

Fishers Lifestyle | September 2014

American Pageant, which is held each year in September in Atlantic City, N.J. All of Fishers will be cheering her on as she focuses on her platform: “Food for Thought: Increasing Awareness of Eating Disorders.” She is hoping to go to state schools and discuss eating and nutrition in a positive manner. “I was actually anorexic myself for a few years and didn’t really understand that I had an eating disorder,” Casterline says. “I wasn’t eating right and I want other young women to see that there is a healthy way to eat and to take care of yourself.” She is excited to be able to tour the state and represent her community well in September. At the time she was interviewed for this article, she was in Orlando, Fla., helping Maddie Bryan prepare for the Junior Miss Indiana Paegant. “She’s a young girl who is just outstanding, so I wanted to do what I could to help mentor her and encourage her in her goals,” Casterline says. “I have a heart to help empower young women. We have to build one another up.”

Pinnacle Chiropractic & Wellness DEDICATED DOCTORS PROVIDE PERSONAL, ONE-ON-ONE CARE ARTICLE KENDRA MATHEWSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ishers residents have a compelling new option for health care at Pinnacle Chiropractic and Wellness. Doctors Kathleen Powell, D.C., and Korey Wiemold, D.C., want to introduce a wellness lifestyle to anyone seeking to take an active role in their health and achieve a better quality of life. They opened their doors five months ago with the vision to offer personal, one-onone care for our community. “We are very customer and service driven,” says Wiemold. “A lot of times when you go to a chiropractor it’s fairly in and out, they don’t spend a lot of one-on-one time.” At Pinnacle Chiropractic that isn’t the case. “We like to really build a relationship and provide quality, personal care,” he says. With only two doctors of chiropractic, they

12

Fishers Lifestyle | September 2014

do not delegate care to assistants or staff. “We spend our time with the patient, taking them through procedures, exercises or counseling. We provide care ourselves personally.” Korey pursued a career in chiropractic medicine because of personal desire to find alternative options for health care. “There is a history in my family of overmedication and it led to the demise of some family members, so I have always been interested in finding natural, drug-free and surgery-free options for heath care,” he explains. Emphasis on Wellness Pinnacle Chiropractic is also working to change the way people think about their health, with an emphasis on proactive wellness. “Rather than waiting for symptoms, and rather than find a pill or surgery to fix problems, it is much more effective to move toward a wellness, or preventative route,” says Korey. “This approach also works with the changing insurance industry and managing health care expenses.” They are able to accomplish this with people with no pain or problems by focusing on making sure that a patient’s nervous and immune systems are functioning at 100 percent capacity. “When your nervous system and immune system are working

correctly, that prevents a lot of problems,” says Korey. Care can include adjustments, nutritional counseling and supplementation, therapeutic exercises and sports injury rehabilitation Making an appointment at Pinnacle is as simple as a visit to the website or calling in. They can usually see patients the same day they decide they want or need an appointment. Patients don’t feel rushed when they come in to the Pinnacle office, and do not have to wait to see the doctor. Depending on treatment, Pinnacle’s average appointments run anywhere from 10 minutes to a half hour. Preventative or maintenance care takes less time than injuries, pain management, rehabilitation and acute care take longer. After initial assessment and development of treatment plan, the doctors make sure you have ample time and attention.

ly less expensive than at a hospital because they do not have a lot of overhead, expensive equipment or advertising expense. Exams run $40 and treatments are generally $30-$40 each. “Our main focus at Pinnacle Chiropractic is to try to keep things natural—drug and surgery free,” says Korey. “We diagnose then try to treat naturally by working with your nervous system and immune system.” If you are looking for a natural approach to wellness or to deal with an injury or pain, and would like easy access to a doctor who wants to get to know you personally and develop a relationship so provide the best care for you, give the doctors at Pinnacle Chiropractic a try.

Pain and Injury Care The practice is also very responsive to patients experiencing headache, neck, back or joint pain. “It is really easy for a patient to come in and been seen directly by the doctor right away,” he says. “The initial consultation is free.” Though chiropractors do not prescribe medicine or perform surgery, they are trained to diagnose just like a medical doctor, and if you have an issue requiring a specialist they can refer you that day. Korey explains something that differentiates their practice from traditional medical doctors is easy access to the doctors. The price of an exam at Pinnacle Chiropractice is significant-

t turns out that you can go home again. At least, such is the case for Ryan Straut, Trevor Peters, Rob Mantock, Kyle Ruschhaupt and Patrick Montgomery. The group of alumni are returning to their hometown of Fishers with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. But before they grace the stage of E. 91st Street Christian Church in October, these guys will have been there and back again. Straut, Peters, Mantock and Ruschhaupt all sang together when they attended Hamilton Southeastern High School in its top mixed ensemble, Royal Edition. Montgomery is a graduate of Fishers High School where he sung in the concert choir. The guys all connected at Purdue Varsity Glee Club camp in August 2013 because of their hometown connection. Now they are bringing their talents home to perform a benefit concert. “The glee club travels all over the state, country and world, and I can’t wait to come to our area,” says Peters. “We have a lot of guys in the glee club from northeastern Indianapolis, and it will be a great concert and homecoming for everyone. Peters is a sophomore in mass communications with a minor in theatre production. Straut is a senior studying computer graphics technology, fo14

rensic science and theater with his eye on a career in forensic imaging. He moved to Indiana when he was in the 4th grade. “We came looking for a small town experience, but all of that changed within the first few years when the town exploded in population and business,” he says. “It has always been a great place to be and the people are some of the nicest I have ever met.” Peters agreed. “Fishers has always been my home, and I couldn’t have thought of a better community to be raised in,” he says. A close high school friend who was a part of the female singing group on campus, the Purduettes, gave Straut and his family a tour of campus and let them sit in on a Glee Club Rehearsal. “As soon as I heard them warm up, I knew that I wanted to audition,” he explains. “My decision wasn’t finalized, however, until I saw a collaboration between the PVGC and IU’s Singing Hoosiers. The Glee Club’s professionalism and impressive musicality was apparent and I wanted the chance to be a part of that.” Straut was chosen to serve as manager this year for the Glee Club. Montgomery is a sophomore majoring in hospitality and tourism management. Ruschhaupt is a senior majoring in industrial management. Mantock is a sophomore majoring in computer information technology. For Straut, the best part of Glee Club is the camaraderie. “All of Purdue musical organizations are like a family, but coming into college with 60 ‘brothers in song’ is pretty incredible.” Peters experienced this the moment he stepped onto campus. “I wasn’t expecting to be welcomed like I was,” he says. “The guys really helped me adapt to college life and taught me how to be a glee clubber as a freshman last year.” On top of the Glee Club’s striving for excellence in every department, they’ve got a small trick up their sleeve: That certain sentimentality they know comes with their performances. “There is something very nostalgic about the Glee Club, and instills a care for the elderly and pride for our military that seems lost on many young people today,” explains Straut. “That appreciation is something our audience members recognize and value.” Purdue Varsity Glee Club has a wide repertoire, ranging from classical, to country, show tunes to modern, barbershop to rock ‘n’ roll. The more variety the better, and audiences can expect to be entertained, no matter the age or musical preferences. Since the performances are diverse, naturally the audiences would be, too. The Glee Club performs more than 50 times a year, and sometimes for celebrities. “We have had the privilege to sing for Neil Armstrong and at his memorial service, at the 2012 Presidential Inaugural Ball, for Dan Marino, and many more,” says Straut. “The most memorable for me was meeting Bob Peterson of Pixar Studios. I have been privileged to sing in Notre Dame Cathedral, on the beaches of Normandy, and countless other breathtaking venues. The memories I have made with these talented people are some that I will cherish forever, and I look forward to the memories we will make this coming year.” Although the Purdue Varsity Glee Club has taken them to many far-flung places, Peters has nothing but pride for his hometown of Fishers. “Music is so important in our community, and it’s an honor to be coming back to Fishers with such a professional group.”

About the Purdue Varsity Glee Club: Founded in 1893, the group is one of the proudest and richest traditions of Purdue University and the state of Indiana. It is part of the Purdue Musical Organization made up of Purdue Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes, University Choir, Purdue Bells, Heart and Soul and All Campus & Community Chorale. PMO is the most incredible vocal organization made up of incredible students who none of them major in music as Purdue does not have a music school. With integrity, passion, unparalleled showmanship and attention to every detail, the men of the Glee Club represent different backgrounds and hometowns across the country, consistently maintaining a high level of academic excellence with majors ranging from engineering to education. About Shepherd Community’s Graduation & Beyond Initiative: The initiative serves 250 youth ages 5-23 during the academic year. The initiative begins in the 5th grade by introducing students to the idea of their future story and an understanding of themselves and continues through post secondary education by introducing key components to enable students to succeed in the professional world and empowering them with tools and training.

Meet The Crouse Family GET ON THE BALL PHOTOS GIVES BACK TO FISHERS COMMUNITY YOUTH SPORTS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

f you ever venture out to Billericay Park in the summer during a baseball tournament or to Mudsock Field during rec football season, you may see a table display of personalized photo sports balls. Every summer and fall the Crouse family takes their business, Get On The Ball Photos, out to the community. They set up a table showing a variety of personalized sports balls they have designed over the years and talk to coaches and parents about great ideas for gifts and awards. What people do not know is that for every ball they sell, they donate a percentage back to the community sports organizations such as HSE Sports and the Upwards basketball programs to support youth sports. The Crouse family owns Get On The Ball Photos in which they personalize sports balls for baseball, volleyball, softball, rugby, football, soccer, lacrosse, hockey and water polo with pictures of teams or individual athletes, logos, text and graphics. Customers just email their favorite photo, and they design the ball. These make great gifts for coaches, seniors, player recognition, tournaments, business sponsors, sports camps, birthdays and holidays. The Crouse’s have made hundreds of balls for coaches and kid athletes over the last two years not only in Fishers and surrounding areas, but also for teams and families across the Midwest, Texas and Louisiana. “We wanted to start a small business that could involve the whole family,” says 20

Fishers Lifestyle | September 2014

Laura. “We wanted it to be something that we all enjoy which happens to be sports.” The Crouse family has a son that participated in the HSE Sports community-based programs and has seen how his sportsmanship and character have developed over the years from having great coaches’ and team parents’ support. Currently, their son continues his love of sports by playing for Hamilton Southeastern High School’s football and baseball teams. When he is not busy with his sports schedule and school, he helps with baseball rec evaluations at HSE Sports and referees with his father at the Fishers United Methodist Church Upwards program. Their daughter grew up through the football cheer program and now participates on a travel cheer team and cheers for her school’s basketball team. She continues playing rec basketball every year through the HSE Sports program. Because of the wonderful experiences their children have enjoyed, the family decided to give back to the community through their sports business. This part-time business is also a hobby for the family. Jim works full time as a territory sales manager for a direct mail advertising company. Karen is an English as a Second Language teacher for first grade in Indianapolis Public Schools. Because of their hectic schedules with work and their children’s extracurricular activities, this business gives them an

opportunity to work together as well as see and catch up with families that they know in the community. “This business is a win-win for us,” says Jim. “Our sports balls catch the memories of a great season in a coach’s or child’s life as well as support our local youth sports programs. Plus, it allows our children to see the importance of giving back to the community. We love designing the balls because each one is so unique. Customers have free reign on how they want the ball designed which makes them a one-of-a kind gift.” They can put individual, team, and/or multiple pictures on a ball along with stats, team schedules, team logos, graphics, and about anything else a customer would want. The balls range in price from $14.95 to $39.95 with team discounts given, and each ball comes with a display stand. “Our business gives us the opportunity to meet wonderful people in our community that otherwise we would never have met,” says Jim. “In addition, this part-time family business allows us to give our children and our young extended family members an opportunity to work for us during tournaments and earn money for college.” The company also designs personalized ornaments, which make wonderful gifts for baby’s first Christmas, grandparents, weddings, and pet owners. “As we continue to grow the business, our next goal with our company is to work with the schools and find local businesses in the community that would like to partner with us by sponsoring player of the game balls for our junior high and high school programs. That would be a great way to not only recognize our student athletes but also promote sports in the schools.” To find out more about Get On The Ball Photos, you can contact the Crouse family at GetOnTheBallPhotos@gmail.com or on Facebook.

Parent’s Corner

Encouraging the Artist in Your Child at Home A

rtist and author Sally Warner says that encouraging the artist in your child is really about nurturing creativity. Creativity isn’t taught, but as parents we can facilitate it. DISPELLING MYTHS OR FEARS You do not have to teach your children “art.” Just provide time, space and simple materials. Keep your child company if they want. Assist with any procedures beyond their grasp. Encourage your child to talk about his or her art. But you don’t have to “teach” them. You do not have to sit down and do art yourself. Doing it with them can emphasize a “right” way to do a project and encourage copying our work instead of expressing their own ideas. Just be in the vicinity to help and encourage. Your house does not have to get messy. Your child will learn where to work and how to use the materials. They can help set up each project and help clean up afterward. Take time to teach those habits. Creativity doesn’t mean chaos. HOW TO ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY Don’t leave art only to the experts. It’s not an activity that should be isolated from our everyday lives; give it a chance at home. Don’t buy into the idea that your child is “gifted in art” or “not gifted.” Art is for every child, and it’s easy. Give your children the frequent opportunity to experience freely a variety of art activities at home. Then let your children do them again and again (drawing, painting, collage, yarn art, sculpture). Help your child build his or her own decision-making capabilities 22

through art. Offer choices, but limit choice to begin with. Art is about making decisions, even if they are small ones. Try to respect and nurture the artist and the “art spirit” that lives in your child--not the things a child makes or the skills a child learns, but the artist in him--or her--self. Don’t worry about originality or “good taste” at this point. Just try to keep art alive at home in any way you can. Free drawing is at the heart of art at home. All you have to do is provide the materials. Have black fine-point nonpermanent markers and blank pieces of paper around. Encourage your children to draw often and much. WHAT ARE THE MOST VALUABLE THINGS CHILDREN GET FROM ART?

Art offers our lives so much more than just bringing beauty into our world. At a time when programs like art are being reduced or even cut from our schools, art is such an important way to help children become well-rounded people. The most valuable things children get from experiencing art are things they will bring to any creative endeavor in any area of their lives: flexibility, decision-making, confidence in their intuition/”inner voice” and the feeling of celebration. Art-at-home is a unique gift only we as parents can give. It enables each child to see that his or her own creativity is something that is valued by the family and is an integral part of who that child is. Parting Thoughts

The Art of Acquiring Art WORDS DENISE SNODELL

Y

ou can’t spell painting without “pain.” This is something I learned at a silent auction several years back. While attending an outdoor literary festival, I stumbled upon a booth featuring one of my favorite local artists. Local for me, I should say, because I’m sure his colorful, whimsical paintings sell across the nation. He just happens to share my area code. This was a big “yay.” The artist had actually offered about a dozen of his originals for an on-the-spot silent fundraising auction. His booth happened to be tucked away from the crowds. And, as I mentioned, this was not an art festival. It was a literary festival. Most folks there had their noses in books. Not many oil sniffers were on the prowl. Jackpot. I called my husband, who was elsewhere that day. “You-knowwho is auctioning his paintings. I think they mislabeled his location. Hardly anyone seems to know he’s here. Should I stay and bid?” My husband responded with an un-publishable variant of, “Jeepers, yes!” So I committed myself to close down the event. As I have learned over the years, at silent auctions, one must linger until the last minute. Even if there’s low attendance, strange stuff happens at the end. The rule is to hover, to intimidate potential competitors while pretending to be civil and nonchalant—even though there’s smack-down rage simmering on the inside. Blink, blink, smile, oh, hello. Oops, pardon me. Blink, blink, smile. 26

Fishers Lifestyle | September 2014

I signed up for four paintings, because it was HIM, plus everything was such a deal. But there was one painting I really wanted. It was a still life with uplifting swirls of oranges and greens. A painting I would put in my office to gaze at maybe 50 times a day. As the afternoon ticked away, I would circle back to check on the auction sheets. People were catching on, so I had to re-bid now and then. Then the pesky issue of cost began to surface. I eventually decided to focus on just two works—but especially on my orange dream. My office painting. Mine. With every return visit, I would chat with the friendly artist, who was as colorful as an impressionist’s palette. By then my fandom became rock solid, and I mean Michelangelo-marble-slab rock solid. I had to own an original. I had to. In the final ten minutes, a mini-mob converged on the scene. Dang it. Pens flew across the bid sheets. But I was still safe. Countdown to my beautiful orange… Then, she appeared. Miss Artbucks. She blinked twice, smiled, and doubled my last bid before I had time to rationalize “spending too much.” Orange, crushed. I now own the other painting. I’m sure the artist was aware of the last-minute drama. He actually hugged me (not her) as he handed me my winning bid. I could not love it more: Three martinis atop a piano. An eternal promise of celebration. And, it’s a painting with a built-in back story. Literary festival, indeed.
