Can you believe it's already August?
It feels like just yesterday we were making summer plans, and now we're shopping for school supplies, checking class schedules, and figuring out how to get everyone back into a routine. As much as we love the slower pace of summer, there is something refreshing about the start of a new school year.
Back-to-school season gives us a chance to hit the reset button. We start setting bedtimes again, planning meals, organizing calendars, and creating a little more structure in our days. It may take a few weeks to find our rhythm, but those routines often help our families feel more balanced and connected.
If you're a parent, you know the transition can bring a mix of emotions. There is excitement for new teachers, new opportunities, and new friendships. There can also be a little anxiety, whether it's your child's first day of kindergarten or their last first day before graduation. Every stage comes with its own joys and challenges.
And let's not forget about our pets. They get used to having the kids home all summer and often notice when the house suddenly becomes quieter. A little extra playtime, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply sticking to a consistent schedule can help make the adjustment easier for them too.

Book Drive for Kids Builds Cultural Literacy That Opens Doors, Builds Confidence, and Shapes Lifelong Readers
Standing before a packed room at a local networking meeting, Michelle Cook paused and held up a handwritten thankyou card. The note’s author wasn’t a librarian, parent, or teacher at a nearby school. It was from a young student who had recently attended a free book fair hosted by Cook’s nonprofit, Book Drive for Kids.
“Thank you!” the note read in part. “You are the reason this cowgirl loves chapter books! I love you.”
That kind of response reflects the impact Cook, fellow co-founder Nicol Klingenstein, and the rest of the volunteer team at Book Drive for Kids are making. What began nearly a decade ago to help a teacher friend host a free book fair at her school, where many of the kids were economically disadvantaged, has grown into a mission to build a culture of literacy that doesn't simply fill bookshelves. It opens doors, builds confidence, and shapes a lifelong love of reading.

are cherished childhood rituals, for many families, purchasing even one or two books is considered a luxury. The result is a growing number of children who can’t build the vocabulary they need to succeed in school. They also miss out on exercising their imaginations, learning about new people and places, and developing empathy by experiencing a life or story different from their own.
Book Drive for Kids fills those gaps by distributing over 80,000 books a year at no cost to school-age kids in kindergarten through sixth grade or their families. The organization has also donated roughly 15,000 books to teachers, preschools, community book fairs, and civic organizations.
“I could share all sorts of stats, like the fact that 16,500 kids in DFW alone have attended a free book fair to select the book of their choice. Honestly, though, it’s the countless smiles on these kids’ faces that matter the most,” Cook said. “The kids truly feel like these books are gifts to them. They aren’t just books from school; they are from people they don’t know who

The primary mission of Joyful Hooves centers around the philosophy that literacy changes lives. Through interactive reading programs and community literacy events, the organization encourages children to develop
confidence in reading by creating positive emotional experiences connected to books and learning. Their rescued miniature horses serve as gentle companions during these activities, helping children feel relaxed, engaged, and excited to participate.
Joyful Hooves visits schools, libraries, community centers, and literacy programs where children can read aloud, interact with the horses, and experience hands-on learning in a welcoming environment. In addition to literacy outreach, Joyful Hooves is dedicated to the rescue and care of miniature equines. All of the horses involved in the literacy program have been rescued and rehabilitated before becoming part of the organization’s mission work. Joyful Hooves also focuses heavily on community outreach programs that serve individuals of all ages. The nonprofit regularly visits retirement communities and assisted living facilities, where the miniature horses bring comfort, companionship, and emotional connection to elderly residents. These visits often encourage conversation, reduce feelings of loneliness and depression, and create joyful moments that leave lasting memories for residents and caregivers alike. Another important part of the organization’s outreach includes supporting first responders and community service professionals. There are moments at the beginning of the school year that many parents recognize. They may happen in the valet drop-off/ pick-up line or at the classroom door. They may happen the night before school starts, while packing a backpack that still looks too large for the child who will carry it.
A parent wonders: Are they ready? Am I ready? Ready for a new teacher and classroom. Ready for longer days, shared routines, new friends, harder goodbyes, bigger expectations. Ready for public or private kindergarten waiting just around the corner.
We talk about school readiness as if it can be measured in clean categories. Can the child recognize letters? Count objects? Follow directions? Sit in a circle? Hold a pencil? Use the restroom independently?
Anyone who has walked a small child into a classroom knows readiness is more than a checklist. A child may know the alphabet and still struggle to let go of a parent’s hand. A child may count to 20 and still need help knowing how to enter a group of children already at play.
At Primrose School of NE Flower Mound, the staff partners with parents and students to assess readiness and ensure successful transitions.

A VOICE FOR KATHERINE
At five weeks old, Bethany Hartung's daughter Katherine came to her in a fragile condition after a difficult start in life. It was a sight that would prick the stoniest of hearts.

“She was so little,” recalls Bethany. “And she had this precious lip pout that we still often see on her face today. I remember walking into that hospital room and seeing this tiny little baby wrapped in a blue blanket. She was so fragile and sad.”
One Little Girl's Journey Through Foster Care Reveals the Life-Changing Impact of Denton County CASA

“For a child who may be experiencing constant change, we become a consistent voice advocating for what they need and what is in their best interest.”
Katherine, fondly referred to by her mother as Ren, was placed in the foster system through unfortunate family circumstances. Desperately needing all the intensive care required by a delicate newborn, she was matched with Bethany and her husband, Mark Hartung.
The Hartungs had completed training to become foster parents a year prior to receiving Katherine. One child had passed through their home in that time. But they craved a lasting relationship.
“We had no idea what the journey ahead would look like,” Bethany remembers. “We just knew Ren needed someone to care for her, love her, and advocate for her. One day at a time, she became part of our family.”
As Katherine embarked on the arduous journey of healing through medical appointments and specialized care, another layer of support was quietly surrounding this tender infant through CASA of Denton County.
In Katherine’s case, her court-appointed advocate came in the form of Richard Boyer. Boyer had recently
won an election as the new mayor of The Colony and was sworn into office during his first few weeks after being paired with Katherine and the Hartung family.
“Richard understood from the very beginning that Katherine needed someone who would consistently show up for her,” says Pattie Heustis, program director for CASA of Denton County. “He was there through the entire case, learning every detail, attending hearings and making sure her best interests were always represented.”
Richard assumed a steady presence in Ren’s life during one of its most uncertain chapters. While caseworkers, attorneys, and placements varied, he became an unchanging source of support or a North Star to Ren.
“A CASA can really change the trajectory of a child's life,” Pattie explains. “For a child who may be experiencing constant change, we become a consistent voice advocating for what they need and what is in their best interest. Just one adult stepping up can make such a difference.”
“She didn't have a voice,” Bethany remembers. “Richard spoke up for her when she couldn't speak for herself. He was there for the entire case and knowing someone was always looking out for her made all the difference.”
One day at a time, Ren became a precious and inextricable piece of the Hartung family. After more than a year of navigating the legal system, her adoption closed in 2024.
Today, it’s difficult to reconcile that tiny, broken infant with the robust child that skips through the hallways of the Hartung family home.
"When I look at Ren, I don't see the broken little baby we first met. I see a joyful, resilient little girl who has overcome so much. Watching her grow has been one of the greatest privileges of our lives."
As for Bethany, she now recruits child advocates for other children as a part of the CASA of Denton County team.

Artist of the Month
Flower Mound is home to countless parks, restaurants, and community members. But one person is quietly working to create evocative, abstract paintings of her memories. Diane Walker-Gladney, our artist of the month, has been creating art since childhood, and creates superb paintings in her forest-like studio.
Diane reflects on her work. “My work is a visual diary of sorts exploring an ongoing collection of memories that began in a small town in Connecticut. As a young child, walking was a part of my daily life. We lived close to town, and as I meandered my way to school, I became keenly observant. I experienced the changing of the seasons, splashed in puddles, kicked leaves, and walked the same paths of my father and grandfather. These quiet whispers have remained with visceral integrity and have become fodder for my work.
"As I move forward in my life, I continue my collection of memories. Just as those childhood experiences etched their place, new ones are added. Unexpectedly, it is the seemingly insignificant and inconsequential moments that remain and hold such gravity. These are the moments I celebrate and paint as they are the ones that define my story. I find that my history, although unique to me, can find a universal voice. We all have an autobiography; we all have a story. Let the conversation begin!”
Diane’s work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Longview Museum of Fine Arts and the Denton Public Art Project. In addition, she was named a Hunting Art Prize finalist three times.
Diane’s pieces are atmospheric, gestural, and layered, with a soft, weathered quality. Many pieces are moody but not heavy, with moments of warmth that keep them from feeling cold. One piece, The Space Between Raindrops, features bold colors evoking a wet path covered in leaves. Each piece allows the viewer to pause and consider what might be Diane’s inspiration or just reflect on the beauty of the colors and composition.

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.
Slow Cooker
Homemade Dog Food
INGREDIENTS:
• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)
• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes
• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots
• 1 cup frozen spinach
• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice
• 4 cups water
DIRECTIONS:
1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.
2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.
3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.
