LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome to the Fayetteville City Lifestyle Family! As the dust settles from our New Year's celebrations, I am excited to extend a warm welcome to 2024 and introduce you to the Premier Issue of the Fayetteville City Lifestyle publication! My connection to Fayetteville began more than a decade ago, when I first visited my brother who was attending the University of Arkansas. He showed me the nooks of the city and immediately I was captivated by its unique charm and welcoming atmosphere. This allure eventually led me to make my own path attending the university, forging lifelong friendships with the city’s natives. I have since had the privilege of working at a local startup company located in the historic downtown square, but little did I know this experience would further ignite my passion for creating here locally. Once I stumbled upon the City Lifestyle opportunity, there was no doubt in my mind that someone needed to bring this publication to Fayetteville! So what sets Fayetteville City Lifestyle apart? It’s more than a monthly publication; it’s an invitation to engage with our community in a deeper and more meaningful way. Written by Fayetteville, in Fayetteville, for Fayetteville, we aspire to foster connection, spark conversation, and build relationships that enrich our collective experience in this town. From Historical landmarks to hidden gems, our team is dedicated to consistently delivering an intimate message that is focused solely on Fayetteville. As we embark on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for my amazing team of ambitious individuals who share my passion for Fayetteville and telling its story. Together, we commit to capturing the essence of our town, highlighting the resilience and innovation of our local business owners that define our spirit. Thank you for being a part of our Fayetteville family. We are honored to serve as your storytellers, chroniclers, and community connectors. Whether you’re a newcomer or a longtime local, may Fayetteville City Lifestyle be your guide to rediscovering the magic of our town, one inspiring story at a time. I ’m n ot j u s t a d r a f t s m a n . I l i ke t a k i n g p e o p le ’s i nve s t m e nt s a n d t u r n i n g it i nt o s o m e t h i n g I ’m p rou d of. . . David McKee’s office stands just outside the trail entrance at the opening of the Fay Jones Woods in Fayetteville. Inside, the office is covered with models and sketches of beautiful homes and other buildings in Northwest Arkansas. Stacks of blueprints line every table in the open space. Stooped over his large desk, David uses his grid sheets and vellum paper to make additions for a home that Fay designed and built. In the 1980s, David was trained by Fay Jones himself. Now, in a world of computer generation, David still hand sketches, like Fay, all of his designs for custom homes and park structures. He’s been using this method as an architect for over 40 years. Before his career started, David grew up in Northwest Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas in the early 1970s. He bounced around different majors like anthropology and history before attaching to the art department. At this time, David started doing construction, masonry, and building structures for he and others in the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970’s. David built a geodesic dome, a cabin for himself, and even a fireplace for his future father-in-law. He was traded a mule for his hard work. With the skills for construction, the mind for artistic creation, as well as some scholarship money from the Arkansas Masonry Contract Association, David decided to enter the architecture program in 1978, at 27 years old. Soon after, David began learning from Fay Jones. Just as Fay Jones learned from Frank Lloyd Wright, David learned from Fay. David, however, had
the privilege to work right under and for Jones. David mentioned how Fay’s skill for teaching made him such a good mentor. “Fay would just throw problems out,” David said. “He would expect me to solve whatever issue there was in the design, so I could build the synapses to learn myself.” Now, David does much more than just sketch with paper and pencil like Fay. “This is my restoration era, he said. “I take many of Fay’s old projects, such as houses that families still live in, and renovate them… but I try do so according to the ‘Fay Way.’” David now designs and restores homes and buildings according to the style of his mentor. Fay Jones once explained his style this way: “The building-site relationship is one of the tenets of organic architecture-this strong sense of the symbiotic relationship of a building to its site. Somehow, you’re trying to look at the ideal aspects of the site, trying to build a building that’s responsive to its environmental context.” With stone, gable roofs, and low structures that adapt to the landscape, David mimics Jones’ traditional style. On his website, David says something wholly similar: “We strive for a timeless quality…rooted in the nature of their place. Buildings that achieve a harmonious relationship and a contextual appropriateness with their surroundings stand the test of time.” David mentioned that while he might seem outdated to current architecture with its modernity and minimalist style, he still holds to the “Fay way.”

Like Fay, the intricacy of David’s designs demands a lot of thought and hard work. “I’m not just a draftsman,” David said. “I like taking people’s investments and turning it into something I’m proud of, and they’re proud of. Currently, David is working on an office building to accompany one of Fay’s projects he had worked on previously, the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista. David, however, works mainly with people in Northwest
Arkansas trying to create their own beautiful homes. He says he believes part of the American dream is to have your own stake in the ground, where you can call a place your home. David said he takes pride in designing beautiful homes and other structures for those that call Northwest Arkansas their home. “I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else than Northwest Arkansas,” he said. “Except, maybe, I’d have a summer home in Portugal or something like that.”

“Once they are downtown, they will scout out the shops, eat at restaurants, and explore nightlife.”
With the start of a new year, we are honored to welcome a fresh face to Fayetteville. Kelly Rich is a placemaking powerhouse. With over 20 years in the community development and event planning space, she humbly advocates for her city and its individuals. After speaking with Kelly regarding her professions, passions, and plans, I would describe her as an intentional friend to small business owners. She uses her innovative ideas to create environments of cohesion. With roots in Louisiana and experience as former executive director of the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council in Jacksonville, Florida, she made the move to NWA just over a year ago. The title she has assumed is director of downtown initiatives for Experience Fayetteville, where she will build the city’s brand. Over the past year, Kelly has been impressed by Fayetteville’s natural beauty and the resident’s overwhelming pride. She states that “it’s really hard to create pride if it’s not there, but these people LOVE their city. They’re excited CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/FAY E T T E V I L L E

to promote its authentic personality.” She is also grateful for the supportive stakeholders that have helped her surpass goals already. Over the past year, Kelly’s goal has been to get people to the downtown district. “Once they are downtown, they will scout out the shops, eat at restaurants, and explore nightlife.” She has already added immense value to our community. This October marked the first Falltober fest in which people gathered to celebrate all things autumn. The attendance goal for this event was 1,000, which was massively exceeded when 10,000 people attended. Another successful event Kelly helped organize was a lightshow & silent disco at the Ramble, Fayetteville’s newest park. In addition to hosting more creative events, Kelly plans to support citizens with more pedestrian infrastructure and expand downtown housing in anticipation of a huge population increase. She states that her role will include advertising on behalf of downtown, planning public events & pop-up activations, and highlighting local art & talent. Kelly’s reputation is not one of a boss, but a friend in charge. She is a relational expert who puts people first, listens well, and follows through. We are beyond lucky to have her, and excited to watch her grow our community.
