or Kyle Heidlebaugh, a successful dealership is built on more than the vehicles lined up outside. It begins with the people who walk through the doors. Heidlebaugh recently joined Cronic Chevrolet GMC in Griffin as General Manager, bringing 26 years in the automotive business and more than two decades devoted to Chevrolet and General Motors. “We’re a people business. We’re people centric,” Heidlebaugh said. “You focus behind your people first.” That philosophy may have roots deeper than his automotive career. Heidlebaugh grew up in Pennsylvania, where his family has owned an appliance business for 102 years. Although he chose a different industry, he built his own career around many of the same things that sustain a business across generations: relationships, repeat customers, and personal attention.

“You’ve got to make a person your friend before you can sell them a car,” he said. Heidlebaugh is also genuinely enthusiastic about the vehicles he represents. Tahoes and Suburbans are personal favorites — he has owned five of the full-size Chevrolet SUVs — while his current ride is a 2026 GMC Yukon Denali. He describes the Denali as one of General Motors’ standout vehicles, praising its fit, finish, technology, and luxury. He is also looking ahead to upcoming redesigned Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. But spend a few minutes with Heidlebaugh, and the conversation inevitably returns to people. He believes managers should know their employees, greet customers throughout the dealership, and remain visible rather than disappearing behind an office door. Even the

placement of the vehicles matters to him. One of his longtime rules is, “You can’t sell what you can’t see.” His own life is undergoing a redesign as well. After spending his entire life in Pennsylvania, Heidlebaugh recently relocated to Georgia. His wife of 20 years and their teen son plan to join him after the school year, and the family is exploring where they will put down roots. So far, Georgia has made an impression. “The best thing is the hospitality,” Heidlebaugh said. “People are genuinely nice here. They’re genuinely welcoming.” At Cronic Chevrolet GMC, Heidlebaugh intends to return that welcome — one conversation, one relationship, and one customer at a time. Visit Cronic Chevrolet GMC in Griffin to meet Kyle Heidlebaugh and explore the Chevrolet and GMC lineup.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Well-Worn, Well-Loved Ever since I can remember, I've been in the kitchen. My mother had me at her elbow from the start, and somewhere in those years I fell hard for cookbooks. I've collected hundreds of them since, and I still can't walk past a used bookstore without checking the cooking section. Every magazine that landed in my mailbox got the same treatment: I flipped straight to the recipes first. Martha Stewart Living, Southern Living, Real Simple, all of them. I devoured every page. But none of those hold a candle to this one. My first edition, Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book circa 1950. The spine is gone. The pages are tattered and crusted with decades of ingredients that never quite made it into the bowl. It is, without question, the most loved book on my shelf, and I mean that literally, because love leaves marks. Every time I pull it out, I'm back at the counter with my mother, pulling out her hand mixer, eggs, flour, sugar, nuts, and vanilla for our Christmas thumbprint cookies. That cookbook doesn't just hold recipes. It holds her. So this year, when it came time to plan our Food Issue, there was really only one direction to go... recipes. Recipes, stories, and the kind of food that makes a house smell like it means something. I'm especially excited for you to meet our cover girl, Shellane Brown, and hear how her new bakery came to be here in Fayette County. Her story is proof that the best things are worth the wait, and worth the faith it takes to get there. Closer to home, our daughter turns 16 this month, and yes, we've already committed to a pink, frilly, glitter-covered cake befitting the occasion. Some things you don't cut corners on. So here's my hope for you this month: find something new to make, or pull an old favorite off the shelf and give it another spin. If you've got a cookbook with a broken spine and a few stains of your own, don't retire it. Cook from it. Those are the pages that matter most. Happy cooking, baking, and eating, Fayette County.

Iced to perfection, this 3-layer chocolate cake will make your mouth water. Photo by Marie Claire Photography.

Every great bake begins the same way. The finest ingredients, in the right order, with the right time and temperature, always turn out perfect. Shellane Brown’s life has followed that same quiet logic, though she’d be the first to tell you she simply follows her faith and her heart. Oddly enough, the story is as easy as baking a cake. Family was the flour, the foundation of her recipe for success. They funded the dream when it was only a dream, put their own careers and retirements on hold, and when the work grew heavy enough that she wanted to set it down, they simply wouldn’t let her.

“We are good enough, we are gifted, and as long as we don’t hold ourselves back, we can allow the world to see us win.”

Shellane layers on her rich chocolate buttercream, the first step to deliciousness.

Community would become her “proofing” ground, those quiet moments at peace that allowed her rise, first in Stone Mountain and again in Fayetteville. Shellane never expected lightning to strike twice. Faith was the prayer behind a lease signed on a building that had yet to be built. Three Food Network Championships, a Halloween Wars crown no black competitor had ever worn, and the name Woodstone. Woodstone has come to mean belonging as surely as it means cake. Fold the ingredients together, and what rises is not simply a

baker, but a woman who took her life’s story and made something that sweetens her community and beyond. Every business has a center of gravity. At Woodstone Bakery and Cafe, it’s family. Start with Shellane’s mother, Veronica. She is the one who solves the problem before anyone’s finished naming it, who’ll drop everything in Stone Mountain and drive to Fayetteville with a trunk full of supplies. On paper, she’s the CFO: bills paid, payroll run, licenses renewed. In truth, she’s the woman who stayed up through the small hours when Shellane first started baking,

and who still swears each new cake is the best one yet. Then there’s Erica, who set aside her own dreams to help open Apple-Butter Bakery as COO and head baker. Today she runs logistics, procurement, quality control, and even returning to school to finish her degree. “They were all there to endure the storms,” says Shellane, “eventually we got to the promised land together.” The Fayetteville chapter began almost by accident. It was 2018, and after seeing an Instagram post about Trilith, an anniversary trip was planned. Shellane and

Beautifully crafted flat white. Photo by Marie Claire Photography.

“I hope I encourage other young kids who may not have seen people who represented them on TV compete with the best of the best and win it all."

Daniel, her husband, first wandered into Trilith, back when it was barely a place at all. “There wasn’t much then, maybe thirty homes and a sales center,” she recalls. An agent walked them through the vision, and for a couple already drawn to the intimacy of New-Urbanism, it took hold. They’d seen other planned communities across the Southeast, and if she’s honest, most hadn’t felt built with them in mind. “Many didn’t feel too welcoming as a young black couple,” says Shellane. “Trilith immediately felt different.” For two creative people who make their living telling stories, “we knew Trilith was a community we wanted to be a part of.” After much prayer, they signed a lease on a site unseen, and it was one of the biggest faith moves in her life. The rest, as they say, is history. What they built lives and breathes under a single roof... her Apple-Butter Bakery cakes and pastries on one side and Daniel’s Gilly Brew Bar on the other, serving coffee, personally roasted several times a week. They keep the two businesses deliberately separate, a boundary drawn early to spare a young

marriage the weight of it all. “We thought it wise to run our businesses separately so that business doesn’t interfere with our relationship,” says Shellane. “We are always helping one another in any way we can.” To add to the appeal, Apple-Butter Baker y in Fayetteville is a “help-yourself ” baker y. Order online, get your pick-up date, and it’s kept for you in a refrigerated locker so you can swing by anytime you’re able. Want a fresh slice of the best chocolate cake you’ve ever tried? Swipe your credit card and grab it from the chilled vending machine. Brilliant! Shellane and her family hope to be able to expand the footprint of the business in Trilith to better serve their amazing customers at that location. “Our new community has welcomed us with open arms and has supported us since opening day,” says Shellane. “Our regulars are some of the most loyal people you’ll ever meet. Our neighbors love us in and out of the business.” It is much more than a bakery and café; it is family and community rolled into one.

Feed Your Soul Food is exciting to cook, and satisfying to eat but is it enjoyable to read? Novels where food is prominently featured can be a veritable feast for the eyes. Food imagery, also called gustatory imagery, adds depth to a novel, providing a springboard for all kinds of descriptive and symbolic language. Different dishes can transport a reader to new regions of the world, reveal a character’s culture, or symbolically deepen the meaning of a text. So, dive into this list of autumn reads and don’t forget to save room for seconds.

Stanley Park

The School of Essential Ingredients

by Timothy Taylor

by Erica Bauermeister

True crime fans and foodies alike will enjoy this beautifully written novel. The novel follows a Vancouver based chef, Jeremy Papier and his failing bistro. As Papier tries to hold his dreams together, his homeless father drags him into a real-life, 1940s “cold case” investigation. The novel mindfully uses the investigation as well as Papier’s commitment to locally grown foods to pay tribute to Vancouver’s landscape and history.

Love is in the air at this Monday night cooking school. The novel follows a cast of hapless students as they are instructed in both the kitchen and in life by the school’s owner, Lillian. Lillian is the group’s fairy godmother as she hands out morsels of advice and challenges the students with advanced recipes. A cozy read, be prepared to fall in love with the decadence of the school’s dishes as well as the sweet message that lingers long after you put down the book.

A Moveable Feast

The Sol Majestic

by Ernest Hemingway

by Ferrett Steinmetz

Published after his untimely death, A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s memoir. A love letter to 1920s Paris and the literary movement, Hemingway charters the reader through his early years there, one cafe at a time. Along the way, familiar characters like Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald float in and out. This no-frills prose will stick to your ribs and leave you satisfied.

If you love science fiction, this big-hearted, culinary space opera is sure to hit the spot. The story follows impoverished Kenna, an aspiring guru who hungrily wanders the cosmos until he wins dinner at the galaxy’s most renowned restaurant, The Sol Majestic. A novel that is both fun and thought provoking, Steinmetz uses striking food imagery to explore what truly excites the spirit. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/FAYET T E C O UN T Y

OU R FA M I LY FAVOR I T E

Down-home chicken and cornmeal dumplings, straight from Pam's kitchen.

I have a lot of “favorite” dishes, but when surveyed, my kids insisted I make and share my recipe for this down-home classic. Plain chicken and dumplings are wonderful, but a little cornmeal in the dough is what takes it from good to unforgettable. That small addition gives the dumplings a slight golden

crust and a bit of texture against the soft, tender bite underneath, turning an already comforting dish into something with a little more personality. Add fresh chives and parsley, a splash of white wine in the chicken, and a rich, creamy gravy to tie it all together, and you’ve got a keeper... cornmeal and all.

DOWN-HOME CHICKEN AND CORNMEAL DUMPLINGS Ingredients:

For Chicken: 8 serving-size pieces of chicken – cleaned, rinsed, and patted dry • Salt and pepper • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 cup chopped shallots • ¼ cup chopped fresh garlic • ½ cup dry white wine For Dumplings: • ¾ cup all-purpose flour • ¼ cup yellow cornmeal • 1 teaspoon baking powder • ¼ teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper • 2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into bits • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 2/3 cup buttermilk For Gravy: • 3 cups chicken stock • ¼ cup heavy cream • 2 ½ tablespoons all-purpose flour • Salt and pepper

Directions:

Cook the chicken: Season chicken with salt and pepper. Heat butter and oil in a deep, heavy skillet over high heat until foam subsides. Add chicken in two batches and brown well on all sides, turning occasionally, about 8 minutes per batch. Arrange all chicken pieces, skin-side up, in the skillet and sprinkle with shallots. Add wine and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, until chicken is cooked through, about 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200F. Transfer chicken to an ovenproof platter, leaving juices in skillet. Cover chicken with foil and keep warm in the oven. Make the dumplings: Sift together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pepper into a bowl. Blend in butter with a pastry blender or your fingertips until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in chives and parsley, then add buttermilk, stirring just until dough is moistened; do not overmix. Make the gravy and cook the dumplings: Skim fat from juices in skillet. Add 2 ¾ cups of stock and bring to a boil. Whisk together cream, flour, and remaining ¼ cup stock in a small bowl until smooth, then whisk into boiling stock and season with salt and pepper. Drop 8 heaping tablespoons of dough into simmering gravy, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow dumplings to expand. Reduce heat and simmer gently, covered, until tops of dumplings are dry to the touch, about 15 to 20 minutes. Spoon dumplings and gravy over chicken. Serve with rice and ENJOY! There’s something about apple dumplings that tastes like fall. Warm apples baked inside golden, buttery pastry, with cinnamon and sugar filling the kitchen with that unmistakable autumn aroma. It’s the kind of dessert that feels like a hug on a cool October evening. Apple dumplings are one of my favorite fall treats because they’re both nostalgic and comforting, turning simple ingredients into something that feels special. They remind me that some of the best recipes aren’t necessarily complicated; they’re the ones that bring people to the kitchen and make a house smell like home. Whether they’re served after a family dinner, brought to a fall gathering, or enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, apple dumplings capture everything I love about this time of year: cozy evenings, good food, and making memories around the table. I hope this recipe brings back beautiful memories of seasons past and that you love every delicious bite!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish. 2. Prep apples:Peel, core, and cut each apple into 4 wedges (8 total). 3. Wrap apples:Separate crescent dough into triangles. Wrap one apple slice in each crescent roll, starting at the wide end and sealing well. Place seam-side down in the baking dish. 4. Make the sauce:In a small saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and optional nutmeg. Heat just until combined - don’t boil. 5. Assemble:Pour the butter mixture evenly over the dumplings.Carefully pour the soda around the edges and between dumplings (not directly on top). 6. Bake:Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. 7. Rest & serve:Let cool for 10 minutes so the sauce thickens slightly.

A HEARTY PASTA E FAGIOLI CASSEROLE MADE FOR CHILLY NIGHTS AND SECOND HELPINGS.

A CASSEROLE CLASSIC ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULI REEP

I have been making this recipe for close to thirty years, and it has always been a hit and a family favorite. When I serve it to someone for the first time, they inevitably ask me to please share the recipe. Traditionally, pasta e fagioli, pronounced “pasta fazool”, is served as a soup, but this rendition is a hearty, comforting casserole that combines tender penne pasta with savory Italian sausage, kidney beans, and a rich tomato-based sauce. The sauce is infused with garlic, onion, oregano, thyme, and a touch of cayenne pepper, creating layers of warm, flavorful seasoning with just a hint of heat. This satisfying meal is perfect for family dinners, gatherings, or a cozy night at home. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

PASTA E FAGIOLI 8 servings

Ingredients:

• 1 28 oz. can Italian tomatoes, diced • 1 15 oz. kidney beans, drained and rinsed • 1 pound Italian sausage, crumbled • 1 small onion, chopped • 2 large garlic cloves, minced • 3/4 teaspoon oregano, dried • 3/4 teaspoon thyme, dried • 2 – 3 tablespoons tomato paste • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • salt and pepper, to taste • ½ pound penne pasta, cooked • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated • 1/8 cup parsley, fresh minced • 6 ounces Fontina cheese, grated

Cooking Instructions:

Drain and rinse the kidney beans. Prepare water in a Dutch oven and bring to a boil. Cook Penne per instructions. Drain and set aside.
