While I was planning our style issue this year, I pondered, "What is good fashion sense? I mean, really, isn't fashion sense subjective? Can one wear a sackcloth and wear it well?"
Why not? If you wear it with confidence, why wouldn't anything look good?
I love watching people in the airport. Any time I travel, I find it amusing to sit at the gate in a place I can look at the folks rushing or lolly-gagging to their gates. I see moms in comfy tennis shoes with little ones in tow, business travelers in their suits and Oxford shoes, young 20-somethings in their joggers and Adidas, and I wonder about their lives. What's behind their clothing choices and hairstyles? I wonder if some of them actually own a mirror too. I mean, if you are traveling, I know it's not comfortable to sit in those little, ever-shrinking seats on the plane, but at least throw a comb through your hair and wear something that fits you.
But even if you don't have time to brush your hair or put on makeup, you can still walk wherever you are with confidence, right? Hold your head up and strut your stuff like no one else is in your space. Let everyone around you know that you got it going on, no matter what, even if you're not confident on the inside, you can fake it to you make it on the outside. Here's how you do it, it's super easy...
1.) Tip your head back slightly.
2.) Look people dead in the eye.
3.) Give 'em a smirk.
That's it. That's all you have to do to appear confident, whether you're confident or not. Do it next time you're at the store and see how people react. To me, confidence is the most attractive quality in a person, and it goes a long way toward making a person "fashionable".

Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs (FAACE), founded in 2011, provides support, camaraderie, and education to help artists grow and thrive. Open to anyone interested in promoting the arts, the Fayette County-based organization’s membership includes regional and national artists.
Using two famous artists as examples, Charlene Sibaja, executive director of FAACE, showcases the necessity of the organization’s programs. She said that while Leonardo Da Vinci found fame in his lifetime through diverse interests, which included business as well as art, he also had a network of people. Vincent Van Gogh, who focused only on art, sold little if any art during his lifetime and died poor and depressed. Sibaja said that sometimes
artistic people are introverted and don’t have the skills needed to survive as an artist. “We want to help that person grow and share their art with the world in their lifetime so that they can benefit from it,” she said.
FAACE programs include the Artpreneur Workshop, where artists can sharpen skills and learn best business practices; Artist in Residency, which allows experienced artists to mentor beginning artists; and the Magnolia Arts Festival, which gives artists a venue to exhibit and sell their art and provides grants for local art instructors.
Sibaja believes one important aspect of being involved in the arts is that it helps people think creatively. “When you’re creative, it gives you different pathways to solve problems,” she said. Coming from a technical background, she admits she had to learn to be creative. The unlikely head of an art organization, Sibaja is a retired Army officer who worked as a software engineer and as a director of information technology and training.
She and her husband Roger retired from the military almost 20 years ago, and looking to leave their stress behind and find something they could enjoy as part of the community, opened Gobi Photography. Participation in FAACE followed shortly. Getting to know fellow artists, Sibaja said, “was a whole different climate for me.” In addition to building problem-solving skills, she believes that art helps people find ways to relax and enjoy each other, and fosters understanding of other cultures.
When Sibaja became president in 2015, she knew FAACE had unrealized potential. Using her military training and development background, she set about connecting people and developing a sense of community among diverse local artists. She also wanted to give back to the community while allowing artists to showcase their talents and the first Magnolia Arts Festival was held that year.
Sibaja said The Magnolia Arts Festival is diverse not only in color and culture but also in the arts. “When we do
Magnolia, we have everything from dulcimer players to people rapping and Christian music. We have Chinese dancers; we have Indian dancers. We try to blend all the different cultures so people can have an appreciation for each other.”
“We try to use Magnolia to give those people a voice and also to let them have a dialogue with other people instead of making assumptions and stereotyping,” Sibaja said adding that art can be the vehicle to have a conversation with someone different. “It’s about building community
and loving people that are different and appreciating those differences. Sometimes we think things are one way because of what we see from the outside but when you start to talk to a person and you see their point of view, you realize that things are a little different from what you are seeing from your point of view.”

A SWEET AND SAVORY APPETIZER STYLED AND SERVED THREE WAYS!
Serves 12
INGREDIENTS
• 3 cups red onion sliced very thin
• 3 tablespoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup dried cranberries
• 4 tablespoons sugar (I prefer raw sugar)
• 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
• 1 baguette sliced and toasted, mini phyllo shells, or puff pastry
• 4 ounces Stilton, goat cheese, cream cheese, or brie
1. In a saucepan with a cover, heat the olive oil gently over medium heat, tossing the onions to coat. Cover the saucepan and very gently cook the onions until they almost melt. Remove the lid, stirring in the cranberries, sugar, and balsamic vinegar. Stir to mix and turn the heat down very low. Let the juices evaporate, creating a marmalade-type texture. Since onions vary in sweetness, taste for a nice balance of sweet and sour. Adjust to taste buds with a little more sugar or vinegar.
Baguettes:
Slice baguette into 1/4 inch slices and place on cookie sheet. In a preheated 350-degree oven, toast baguettes for 8 - 10 minutes. Turn each slice over and toast for another 5 minutes or until lightly toasted. When ready to serve, place a slice of cheese or spread cheese (depending on what kind of cheese you use, I prefer gorgonzola for this style) on each baguette toast and spoon the confit on top.
Stuffed Phyllo Shells:
It is easiest to buy the premade shells that you find in the freezer section of your grocery store, but you could certainly make them yourself, as well. Place approximately 1 tsp. of your cheese of choice into each shell. At this point, if you want a warm appetizer, you can place them on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350-degree oven for 10 mins. When done, pull out of the oven and place 1 teaspoon of confit on top of each cup of cheese. Garnish with thyme leaves or fresh rosemary, or leave ungarnished.
Self-serve Appetizer:
This is my favorite way of serving the confit. It makes such a beautiful presentation and your guests can have as much or as little as they desire. I either use Brie or Cream cheese for this style. Place the cheese on an appropriate-sized serving plate and spoon the confit over the top of the cheese. Garnish with fresh Rosemary and a couple of fresh cranberries, if you desire. Place crackers or baguette slices around the cheese and watch it disappear!! Serve at room temperature for the best flavor.

Kevin Savage and Sydney Mitchell are dressed and ready to bring their A-game.
It was a chance encounter during a taping of Atlanta News First that connected two Atlanta actors to philanthropy and fashion in Fayette County. While promoting A Wesley Christmas, a BET movie released in November 2022, Kevin Savage and Sydney Mitchell met the founder of Two Sparrows Village, Jennifer Conforti. After hearing her story, the actors expressed interest in the mission of Two Sparrows, and as fate would have it, one divinely orchestrated opportunity led to another.
Kevin and Sydney acknowledge the platform they have in their chosen profession. Sydney believes, “There are so many ways we can use our voice for good. I’m learning how powerful the things we say can be to other people.” Considering the potential Kevin shares, “It’s important that you don’t take the people you meet in your journey for granted. You never know who they are and what you can do to help them, or what they can do to help you.
I’m excited to see what happens in the future and I believe we’re going to be able to do some great things.”
And what better place for great things than Fayette County?
Jamie Georgia, the owner of Tribal Chick - a lifestyle boutique for women’s and men’s apparel, fashion accessories, and vintage wares, expresses gratitude for the opportunity to dress the actors in her unique brand and offers insight into the

Kevin Savage, a southern boy at heart, is from Philadelphia, PA. At the age of 24, in a local church in Philly, Kevin played the lead character in the Christian rendition of Little Shop of Horrors . “I played the role of Seymour. The impact my performance had on my life and the impact my character had on so many people was something I never experienced before. When we were done, people were crying and standing up and cheering. The energy was amazing. That’s when I knew that acting was something I really wanted to do.” While the film and television scene drew Kevin to Atlanta in 2013, his successes and a host of opportunities have kept him here building his portfolio through impressive onscreen roles.
Sydney considers herself a Georgia Peach, as her family moved to Georgia when she was only 6 months old. Sydney’s mother is from Los Angeles, CA, and through the years there were moves between there and Georgia. Sydney’s older brother has been acting since the age of 8, and when encouraged to pursue a career of her own, Sydney resisted the idea of acting. “I was super, super shy and never really wanted to.” A foundation was laid for Sydney’s success as a model and actress. She took her first acting class at the age of 21, and the moment she decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career, everything shut down due to COVID. Then, the whole industry moved to Atlanta. Sydney is settled in Atlanta, perfecting her craft and performing regularly.
Kevin and Sydney are forthcoming in their desire to be action actors. Kevin aspires to do Marvel one day. “If you stay ready you never have to get ready. Look at me because this is who I am and start submitting me to those directors, casting directors, and producers who may possibly give me an audition to play this black superhero or whatever, because I’m good enough.”
Kevin’s and Sydney’s passion for acting spills into their desire to give back. Kevin says, “I have an insatiable desire to give back. I don’t always know what that’s going to look like. Calling to the youth and letting them know, ‘You don’t have to be a victim of society. You don’t have to be another statistic.
“There are so many ways we can use our voice for good. I’m learning how powerful the things we say can be to other people.”
You can do something with your life and become something bigger and better than you could ever imagine for yourself.’” Sydney adds, “I would not be where I am today if I didn’t have my brother and my mom constantly affirming everything in my life and reassuring me all the time.” Sydney wants to be that person for young girls. “I want to help them understand how much confidence is key and that they are worthy.”
Whether on-screen or off, Kevin and Sydney are ready for the next opportunity to make a difference. They look

Niya’s talent escalated with the help of YouTube and beauty influencers. Niya offers insight into today’s trends, products, and what is best for healthy skin. Niya likes to keep makeup applications on the lighter side. “I always want you to look like yourself. That is my specialty. It’s about looking natural, just enhanced.” Natural blush, natural contour, and not as much heavy foundation is what Niya is seeing and providing for her customers. “More skin tints and moisturizers with a hint of color help enhance that natural look.”
Use a primer to smooth the skin and fill in lines and wrinkles. Your makeup application will be easier and your makeup will stay in place. “There’s a range of primers. I can tell which primer would be best for the client. Sometimes the client knows exactly what’s best, or not so good
for them based on past experiences. I ask the right questions and I have all the products any of my clients would need.”
When it comes to lips and cheeks, “Lip gloss is what’s happening. It’s everywhere and most beauty companies have some sort of lip gloss. I use a clear butter gloss by NYX that I love. Blush is making a comeback. I love me some blush. Pinky - something natural is always my go-to.” Niya suggests, “Stay away from cosmetics that are fragranced and flavored. It’s not the best for sensitive skin.”
For Niya, the best part of doing makeup is a satisfied customer. “I love seeing the look on their faces when I’m done. They feel pretty. They feel confident, and I feel good having a small part in that.”
How becoming a fashion blogger helped me create my personal style.
In high school, I was dead set on winning “bestdressed” my senior year. As I expressed this goal to one of my friends and she promptly told me “You will need way better clothes”. It felt harsh at the time, but it created motivation in me. With wisdom, I learned that I didn’t have to have the “best” or most expensive clothes to be the best-dressed person in a room.
I have always had people come up to me and ask where I got my clothes and my friends and family reached out to me for advice on what to wear. I made (online) friends with an Instagram fashion blogger and she encouraged me to just start posting. With work and motherhood being the majority of my thoughts and all of my day, I needed a creative outlet more than I even knew. I remember just posting something and my friend, who by this time was fairly Instagram-famous, re-shared my post that day and for the next few weeks. In a matter of months, I grew by thousands of followers.
At first, this attention can be hard to get used to, and I became overwhelmed with it all and stopped my Instagram account for over a year. When I came back to my creative outlet, it was for me, the original
reason I started. I love clothes and fashion and sharing with other people ways they can put together different outfits. For a while, I felt like ‘fashion’ was petty and unimportant to people, but honestly, it can be something that changes someone’s day and helps make them feel confident.
When I started posting my daily outfits I started seeing repeating patterns in my style. I love a masculine look with feminine touches; I wear colors more when it’s warm and neutrals during fall and winter; I lean more towards classics than trendy. The documentation helped me create, and be proud of, the personal style I have. Start with elevating your favorite basics, use Pinterest to find looks that inspire you, and create a wishlist of items and how you would wear them. My most important piece of advice is to give compliments. When you think an outfit is great, go tell that person. Personal style is mostly about feeling good in what you are wearing and making choices that help build your overall wardrobe.
I never won that best-dressed superlative, but I do get to help people who ask me “How should I wear this” on a daily basis, and to me, that is just as good.
Who cares that your grandma told you that you have to wait until Easter. Rules like this just don't have any hold of style today. Wearing white in the fall and winter is a great way to stand out.

Have you ever pieced together an outfit for a special event or placed a collection of items on a shelf and then stood back and found that the pieces you pulled together totally worked or completely did not work? I used to think that I either needed a whole lot of talent or a bit of luck when it came to styling something beautifully. Turns out, there is no talent or luck about it at all. It all starts with a math formula. This formula is known as The Golden Ratio of 1.618. Discovered in the ancient world by mathematicians, this pattern can be found all over in the world of nature. This ratio creates patterns that can be found on the spines of a pinecone, seeds on a sunflower head, spirals on seashells, even the human form, to name only a few. And our eyes love to see it. Why our eyes like this particular pattern may remain a mystery but how to achieve it is no mystery at all. Fashion designers, interior designers, architects, photographers and artists have all been using this formula for centuries in order to achieve visually appealing compositions. And so can you!
In interior styling, a vignette is a small, curated collection of objects grouped together to create a smaller picture within a larger space in a room. Chances are, at some point you’ve put together a vignette without knowing it was one. What makes the difference between a purposefully styled vignette and a cluttered collection is all in the composition. The composition is most appealing when this amazing Golden Ratio is applied.
To get started on styling a vignette, first decide on the space you’ll place it. It could be an empty shelf, bedside table, or coffee table. Next, collect a few of your very favorite things that could be styled there. These objects could be a few books, a vase with flowers, a candle, a small clock, a plant, a few apples, the list is endless. Now that you have your space and objects to style, it’s time to assemble your vignette.
In grid form, the Golden Ratio shows designers exactly where to place the most important objects in the composition for the greatest visual appeal. Known as Phi, this grid splits the space that you’re working with into thirds vertically and horizontally. Place the most important objects on the correlation grid lines. Even better, place on the points where the lines intersect. This will be more appealing to the eye than if the important objects are in the center of the frame or far to the sides.
How many objects to use
In number form, the Golden Ratio helps us to know how many items to use when styling a vignette. This form is known as the Fibonacci Sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). The sequence grows as it adds together the prior two numbers to get a new number (for example, 3+5=8 and 5+8=13, etc) and repeats. Amazingly, all the numbers that you achieve by doing this are the exact same numbers of petals that are found on flowers. How amazing is that! To apply to styling a vignette, choose a number in the Fibonacci Sequence for the number of items you will use to style. Typically 3 or 5 objects work great for small vignettes.
STEP DOWN OR TRIANGLE
What shape to create
The eye loves to see odd numbers. Odd numbers stop our brain from categorizing items into pairs which are less visually interesting. When styling a vignette, build a triangle shape of 3 points with the objects you are styling. To achieve this, vary the heights of objects to make a stepping down effect. If your items are of similar height then use books or a small object to lift one higher so that it appears taller than the others. To start, place the tallest piece in the back, medium piece in front and slightly to the side of the tall piece, then the smallest piece in front to create a stepping down effect. The Golden Triangle has angles of 72 and 36 degrees but any triangle here will do!

The Beatles have never been one of my favorite bands. I’ve actually said, “The Beatles are the most overrated band, ever.”
Then, I watched “Get Back”, Peter Jackson’s documentary series, recounting how the Fab Four wrote and rehearsed fourteen new songs and planned their first live show in more than two years. I have never eaten a bigger feast of my own words in my life. Turns out, The Beatles were made up of four extraordinary masters of music with superior, and some say incomparable skills. John, Paul, Ringo, and George sat around a rehearsal room and let notes, ideas, and words flow like it was as natural to them as breathing. I was captivated. I can remember asking my husband, an avid Beatles fan, “So they just got together and wrote all of those songs, like in a matter of hours?!” What an astounding accomplishment!
Lucky for me and my newfound love for The Beatles’ music, there is a local band that is bringing the stories behind the songs to light alongside playing some of the most iconic songs in history. BeaTogether with Friends provides a compilation of tunes, but more importantly, brings light to the amazing talent behind the music. George Stamm, founding BeaTogether member, is a walking encyclopedia of Beatles knowledge and concert-goers can expect an excellent history lesson at each event.
