eachtree City resident Jane White-Stevens may be 80 years old, but she has an active lifestyle–from driving every week to tutor her grandchildren to traveling to Kenya for mission work. Jane also drives her husband of 51 years to his medical appointments, and as a retired pastor, drives herself to numerous church prayer and Bible studies each week. This incredibly active woman had a very old car, a 2006 minivan. It was time for an update. “I picked Cronic because they are great supporters of our community and especially the Business Women of Fayette and Coweta. I work with a school in Kenya with TEAM Alliance that’s supported by the

BWFC fundraiser, Spring Swing, formerly O Christmas Tea.” Jane and her husband Rod went to Cronic Nissan to look at SUVs. “I was happy to see a really great looking white Nissan Rogue that was only a year old. To me it looked and felt like we were in a new car.” “What I like best is the camera when I back up, and the light that tells me if there’s a car in my blind spot. It makes some kind of awful noise , and it won’t even let me back into something. So it’s great.” Why is that feature so important to Jane? In her old car, she backed into a service person’s parked car in her driveway, when she forgot to look. It was incredibly upsetting to her, and with the technology available in cars like her new Rogue,

completely preventable. She’d like to prevent what she calls “a very bad day.” What’s it like for Jane to have her “new” car? “I’m kind of fussy with it. There was some dust on the rear bumper and I wiped it off with my finger to make it look like the day we got it. It’s a beautiful car. I love the front end; I think it has personality.” Cronic made the whole process of buying easy. With Jane having an unscheduled trip out of town, Cronic delivered her vehicle to Peachtree City, and fetched her trade in. Jane says to people who are considering buying a car, “I believe Cronic is a place you could trust. It was convenient, and with my experience with the car and the charity giving, they made me believe they are reliable. We were glad to get what we wanted.”

A New Lifestyle
January 2022 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Conforti | jennifer.conforti@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Byron Pugh | byron.pugh@citylifestyle.com
Notice anything different in this issue? Like, everything? Things are changing here at Fayette County Lifestyle and we are so excited to show off our new look! And not just the look, the brand has changed as well... from Lifestyle Publications to City Lifestyle. So fresh, so fun and pretty to look at, but with the same, fundamental flavor of Fayette County. Things in life change. Business guru, John Maxwell, said, "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." I love this. It's not that things are going to change, because they will. It's more about what we do with that change - how we make the changes in life work for us and how we work with them. January is our Health and Wellness issue and I, for one, need to make a change in that area. I need to exercise more and eat less. Ughhh. That is one area in life that I have always needed to change, and it is the one area in life that I'd rather not have to deal with. I know there are people out there who love to exercise, love to eat right and be healthy. I am not one of those people. (cue images of pasta and cheesecake while lying around watching football) I am not getting any younger, however, and I know there are ways I can get healthier without spending a lot of time and money. During the "Summer of Covid," my husband and I decided to make a change. We both started counting calories with an app called "Lose It" and we both lost over 20 lbs. Makes sense... take in fewer calories than you burn and the weight drops. But, as is typical with us, the lb's we dropped have started creeping back. On January 2nd we are changing our habits yet again. It's really about creating a new lifestyle for my own health and for my family. I hope you enjoy our new look and reading about ways to get healthy in this Health and Wellness issue. If there are changes that need to be made in your life or if you have had some big changes surface recently, I hope that you find the best ways to handle them for you and those around you. Happy New Year, Fayette County, and welcome 2022!

Starting the New Year Off on the
Right Foot
A
huge percentage of the population starts exercising just after New Year’s. Whether it’s an intensive boot camp, CrossFit, running or a zero to five miles walking program, intensive activity can cause foot pain. “When you have pain in your foot, you feel it in every cardiovascular activity. If walking hurts, it's less motivating to move. There are a variety of things that can cause foot pain. A common one is plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of connective tissue on the bottom of the foot,” said Dr. Karyn Staples, PT, PhD.
Karyn Staples, PT PhD
Why does foot pain happen? According to Dr. Staples there are a lot of possible reasons but it mostly has to do with tightness in the ankle, calf and back of the lower leg or stiff toes. “If we wore mittens all day, it would be difficult to get mobility in our hands to have our fingers work. And that’s what we do to our feet with socks and shoes all the time. We want to maintain movement within our toes and ankles. We need some pliability there so the tissue can move well.” Prevention of injury is the goal. And preparation is the way to reach it. First Dr. Staples recommends the right shoe — a crosstrainer or walking shoe for walking and a running shoe for running, as these shoes are made differently. Locally, Smith and Davis and Fleet Feet can analyze feet to find the right shoe and fit. If you start an exercise regimen and experience foot pain, you can schedule a visit with the physical therapists at ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio, to analyze and treat your pain. Dr. Staples says that you may feel these injuries when you get out of bed in the morning, and when you stand up from a chair. Perhaps you started out active, and now you can’t do the exercise anymore. It’s time to see a PT. And from there, your
PT can recommend whether you might need to see an orthopedic doctor. Sometimes people want to begin exercise but it’s the fear that they might hurt themselves that stops them. Dr. Staples suggests starting with a moderate walking program, tracking steps and adding some in each day until you work up to your goal. If you’ve not been very active thus far, also beginning Pilates at ProHealth would give you mind-body awareness for walking, and also better posture and control. It is also a safe place to start and generally generates no pain.

In Fayette County, Accountability Courts provide hope and a second chance for a new lease on life.

Judge Jason Thompson
Success is inevitable when a community need is met with the right program, and matched with genuine heart and commitment. In 2013, Judge Jason Thompson - State Court Judge of Fayette County - having presided over many cases, was inspired to start a DUI/Drug Court. In November of that year, Judge Thompson gathered community leaders and stakeholders together to discuss the potential viability of such a program. Eight years later, he is still the leader and driving force behind DUI/Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Court in Fayette County. Accountability Court is an alternate and restorative way of handling cases where the primary issue is substance abuse or PTSD. Before Accountability Court, which was implemented in January 2016, these cases were addressed the same way as any other case presented to the court. With only one tool in the state court toolbox, most cases ended with the same outcome - jail time. Judge Thompson gives a summary of what he realized early on, "If we continue to do it the old way - put somebody in custody - they are not going to get any treatment. They are not going to be able to engage with peers. They are going to lose any positive influence in their life, and what we're basically going to do is rinse and repeat." In essence, "The person is taken out of their environment for a period of time. They go back to the environment and they'll go back into custody longer, and the cycle continues over and over again." In lieu of a long jail sentence, eligible participants two DUI's in five years or three lifetime DUI's, no violent convictions, and no convictions for selling or distributing a controlled substance - must agree to random testing, counseling, group sessions, AA meetings, random searches and more to remain in the program, which is designed to last 14-18 months. Successful completion of the program will result in fines and/or time being dramatically reduced or suspended. It's a program that requires a great deal of commitment.
Studies show that if a participant makes it through the program, the odds of reoffending drop from 70% to 20%. Every Fayette County case is reviewed thoroughly, as a person's past charges could suggest an underlying issue of substance abuse or PTSD. The person does not have to have a DUI or drug charge, but the series of crimes together can be an indicator. A person who has cycled through the system previously knows if they use again and continue to make the same choices, they are probably going to jail for a long time. "They continue to make these choices anyway because the substance abuse issue is so strong they just cannot do it any other way. That's the candidate we're looking for." Twice a month Judge Thompson holds Veterans Treatment Court in the morning and DUI/Drug Court in the afternoon. For Veterans Treatment Court, the team, along with Judge Thompson, consists of prosecutors, defense attorneys, probation officers, treatment providers, and military-specific professionals - representatives from the VA and a Veteran Mentor Coordinator to assess the progress of the participant. A "battle buddy" is also part of the program. A person who goes through the program sideby-side with the veteran. This person is not a participant but has volunteered to assist "their fellow soldier" to get the job done. "They sit with them in the court session. The camaraderie...the band of brothers. It's a beautiful thing to see how they go through the program together." The same team is assembled, minus the military component, for the DUI/Drug Court in the afternoon. The team finds a way to support, reward, and address important matters with, and for the participants, in the battle against the substance abuse issues that led them into the criminal justice system. The first graduation for Accountability Court was held on March 15, 2017. The one graduate signed a new lease on life that day and served as an example of redemption and CONTINUED >

Community leaders and stakeholders met for the first time to discuss the potential viability of a DUI/ Drug Court in Fayette County.
“Accountability Court is some of the most rewarding work I get to do. I’ve seen people at their worst, and I’ve seen them go through the transformation. They come out on the other side and they are such a blessing to our community, to our program. It gives me strength and passion to help more people because I see how life-changing it can be.”
hope for countless others. Since then, there have been as many as seven to graduate at one time, with an average of three to five at each. Accountability Court saves money as well as lives. There is a savings of $22,000 for each person who graduates. To date, there have been over 120 participants to graduate from DUI/Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Court, saving our county approximately $2,640,000 over the life of the program. For Judge Thompson, "Accountability Court is some of the most rewarding work I get to do. I've seen people at their worst, and I've seen them go through the transformation. They come out on the other side and they are such a blessing to our community, to our program. It gives me

strength and passion to help more people because I see how life-changing it can be." While Judge Thompson continues to have a positive impact on the lives of participants, his greatest influence and focus is family. Having met his bride, Alisha, on the first day of law school, the two judges - Alisha is the Judge for the Town of Tyrone - have journeyed together through 18 years of marriage and the birth of three children - Baine, Aida Lynn, and Alexander. Judge Thompson may not have traveled far in his career, as he works less than five miles from where he grew up and attended kindergarten. He does, however, consistently go the distance when it comes to providing the second chance opportunity that is Accountability Court.

ProperPilates Studio is about alleviating pain, not inflicting it. “I usually get people who come to me that are already injured, ProperPilates owner Andrea Chesek said. “They usually have bad backs, and they can’t find any other form of workout.” Although Pilates was designed to be an exercise system, Andrea said people flocked to it because it helped them get through any type of injury they had and get stronger doing it. “There's no reason people should have to live life in pain,” she said. And what about the scary equipment? Pilates clients through the years have nicknamed the pieces. For example, the electric chair is used to stabilize the pelvis; the Cadillac, aka the trapeze table or tower, is used to decompress the spine and square people off since most people tend to favor one side of the body; the reformer uses springs for horizontal exercises, and the guillotine uses springs for vertical exercises. “Each piece of equipment is to help you understand how to move through space with control,” Andrea said. “People struggle with understanding how to push and pull through space because you can’t feel air, but you can feel a spring.” Often confused with yoga, the primary focus of Pilates is to strengthen the core, predominantly using spring resistance. There are about 1,000 different exercises with variations for each. Founder Joseph Pilates used the methods and techniques he developed to rehabilitate injured soldiers during WWI. “It’s really a lifestyle, and you have to be consistent to prevent future injuries in any kind of activity you do, up to and including life,” Andrea said. “Many people pull their backs out getting out of bed, picking up a golf ball, an object off the floor or their children, so this is really to strengthen that awareness so that you move through space consciously.”

“It’s really a lifestyle, and you have to be consistent to prevent future injuries in any kind of activity you do, up to and including life.” -ANDREA CHESEK
A native of El Paso, Andrea spent several years abroad, finishing high school in Buenos Aires and college near Rome. But it was after a move to Orlando that she discovered the effectiveness of Pilates. Born with diastasis recti, a separation between the two sides of the abdominal wall, Pilates not only strengthened her core but helped her achieve the fit abs she could not with other forms of exercise. “It’s like wearing a corset, but you’re doing it with your own muscles,” Andrea said. Her personal results inspired Andrea to help others achieve their fitness goals. She became a certified instructor after moving to Atlanta in 2006 and opened her Peachtree City studio several years later. ProperPilates offers private sessions, group mat classes, and ball and sculpt classes. All focus on strengthening the core and improving flexibility, to promote a better fitness foundation. Perhaps the hardest step is getting started. With a

minor in psychology, Andrea knows the importance of the mind in getting fit. “It’s the thing that gets you started. It's harder to get past the mental blockages than it is the physical ones. It's like telling myself I have to go workout, but I don't really want to, but once I do, I'm glad I did.” Andrea believes many people are miseducated about what Pilates is, adding that it’s nothing like yoga. It’s also not just for women. “They (men) take a session and fall in love with it because it was created by a man for men.” ProperPilates clients range from 13 to 80. For athletes and dancers, Andrea said Pilates will make whatever they do better. For older clients, Pilates improves balance and prevents falls, which lessens the chance of broken bones. Andrea said there’s less chance of injury doing Pilates versus going to the gym but added that also depends on the knowledge and experience of the
teacher. And although Pilates is generally not considered aerobic exercise, clients do get sweaty. So, what can you expect on your first visit to ProperPilates? “A lot of information,” Andrea said. “The first visit is really trying to put yourself in your own body and understanding how much mental use you need in order to tell your body what to do. In the beginning that can be overwhelming.” She recommends beginning with several private sessions, especially for those with injuries so they can gain awareness of what they need to do. “It's more than just a list of exercises that are given to people,” Andrea said. “It needs to be applied correctly. It's a system that's put together to benefit the individual so that they are successful.” For more information about ProperPilates, visit www.properpilatesstudio.com or call 678-561-3872.

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS Aerial yoga inspires each workout to be magical and freeing.
ARTICLE BY JACKIE BOEHEIM PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOUTH ATLANTA PHOTOGRAPHY
Suspended from the ceiling, they fly through the air. Reaching new heights both physically and mentally. Wrapped in the warmth of the silk and swinging the day away. Aerial Yoga is the art of traditional yoga by way of silk hammocks and aerial trapeze bars. Traditional yoga mat poses are taught and performed solely in the hammocks, while suspended from the ceiling. Suzanne Lawhead has been teaching yoga for 30 years. In 2010, she fell in love with aerial yoga and later became certified. In 2019, she opened Aerial Yoga PTC where she could share her knowledge and love with the community. When you walk through the doors of Aerial Yoga PTC you are engrossed with aerial yoga, arts, silks and trapeze. “Aerial yoga and the aerial arts are for everyone age 6 to 60 and beyond. It is a chance to explore, fly, and be free. All in a safe and comfortable environment,” Suzanne shares. Before opening her studio, aerial arts had not been present in our community. While this was a big task to take on, it did not discourage Suzanne. “I wanted to bring something to our community that was new and inspiring, and still in the realm of Yoga.” Aerial yoga is different than traditional mat yoga. “The body has more freedom of movement; standard poses are enhanced with the use of the aerial hammock,” Suzanne explains. “Greater flexibly is attained, with the support of the hammock. And there is less pressure on the joints.” CONTINUED >

Over 500 people of all ages and levels have stepped foot inside her studio, embarking on the journey of the aerial arts. Suzanne has patiently taught and motivated each one. There’s a level of risk when practicing these aerial silks. The studio is filled with mats and classes are small, allowing her to give each student personalized attention. After each session, students participate in a performance where they can showcase their newly found skills. With each class, students become

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 34
T R E N D SE T T E R | FITN ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Fashion trends and a healthy lifestyle can go hand in hand
Interestingly, fashion and health have been closely aligned for quite some time. There are many fashion trends that may have a direct impact on your health. As an interventional pain physician, I see many patients who struggle to stay “en-vogue” to the detriment of their health. For instance, high heels are a common culprit for lower back pain though they can really make an outfit pop. The heels serve to create a forward posture that places more pressure on the spine and increases your risk for sciatica. It can also cause muscle spasms in the calves and feet. Skinny jeans on not so skinny people can create uncomfortable waistbands that result in painful compression of the stomach resulting in acid reflux. Additionally, tight abrasive garments can retain moisture from sweat and result in yeast infections and skin abrasions.

However, there are things you can do to be trendy and healthy. • Do: Reduce the load in your purses and bags. That “Neverfull” bag was not meant to be filled with 30lbs of items. Carrying around heavy purses leads to neck, shoulder and back pains. • Don’t: Wear the same pair of socks for more than one day. Invest in a variety of colorful socks that can spice up your outfit and change them daily. Many of my patients admit that it is sometimes easier to leave their worn socks in their shoes after a long day at work. They then recycle those socks the following day. The heat in Atlanta causes our feet to sweat and the socks become a breeding ground for bacteria. • Do: Exercise to make those outfits fit you better. Focus on core strength and stabilization- your abdominal muscles help to counterbalance the forces on your spine. A weak core with abdominal obesity is a main contributor to chronic back pain.
