ronic Chevrolet Buick GMC salesperson Gary Coley sold five Buick Encore GX SUVs last month. And he’s only one on the team. Why is this crossover SUV so popular? “The Buick Encore GX is extremely comfortable with quiet tuning, so it has the feel of a luxury car without a luxury car price and has fuel economy at 30 miles per gallon,” said Gary. “They’re going to start in the mid to upper twenties. Fully equipped will be in the low thirties.” Gary said, “It’s very efficient and peppy. You won’t have any trouble merging into traffic or passing because it’s got a turbocharged engine.” The Buick Encore GX is a completely

different model than the Buick Encore. According to Gary, the Encore GX is a little bit larger. “It’s got a little bit more luggage room in the back. It will be quicker. They’re both going to give you very quiet rides, but the Encore GX will have upgraded features like wireless, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.” Last month Gary sold to a retired airline pilot and a young couple with a toddler. The pilot purchased the Buick Encore GX after doing research on the exact features he wanted. He was upgrading from a Buick Encore to the Buick Encore GX. “He’s extremely happy. He just sent me a super review,” said Gary. The young family “came in for an Equinox but liked the styling of the Encore GX. After

they drove it, they were hooked. They liked the comfort level and how nimble it was.” The Buick Encore GX technology is impressive – Alexa, OnStar and WiFi that can connect to 7 devices. “With OnStar, you’ll have automatic crash response. If your check engine light comes on it can do incident analysis. If the vehicle is stolen, they can report a location to the police and literally slow the vehicle down or disable it to make it easy to catch.” For details or to test drive a Buick Encore GX visit Cronic Chevrolet Buick GMC, only 25 minutes from Fayette County, or croniccars. com to begin shopping from home.

WHO WANT YOU IN THEIRS. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and love you, no matter what." That is a cool viewpoint on family, isn't it? I am beyond blessed to have been born into a family that I consider friends as well. There isn't one I can think of that I couldn't or wouldn't go to for support if needed.

When you have a special needs child like we do, that means the world. I have heard of special needs families whose own blood will not invite them to gatherings because their children are, "too difficult to deal with". Can you imagine that? I guess I have taken for granted the love and support we have received because, let me tell you, Abby can be extremely difficult to deal with. (Note Abby's face above. She was not into a family photo shoot that day, LOL) One other family Byron and I have as a result of publishing Fayette County Lifestyle is our family of advertisers. TOP 5 FOOD & DRINK TIPS FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY VACATION 1. Fuel Up with Fiber Pick snacks full of fiber such as almonds, peanut butter, fruit, veggies, or popcorn while on the road. Inactivity in the car or changes from your regular diet can cause constipation. A healthy fiber intake can help things travel regularly in your digestive tract. 2 . Drink Hydrating Drinks vs. Dehydrating Drinks Alcohol, cof fee, soda, or energy drinks contain diuretics that prompt your body to get rid of fluids and contribute to dehydration. Water, coconut water, or milk are the best drink choices to stay hydrated and energized throughout your vacation. 3. Use Bottled Water Bottled water is safer than tap water because local water can contain bacteria or pathogens that cause travelers’ diarrhea.

Drinking bottled water lessens the chances of a water-borne illness interrupting your vacation fun. 4. Your entire body, including your cardiovascular system, benefits from rock climbing. There’s no reservation necessary and no equipment needed, as the gym has everything you need to climb. Visitors are welcome to use their own equipment, and beginners can be assured that the staff at Escalade has paved the way to create a less intimidating introduction to the sport. Rope climbing is generally considered sport climbing, and bouldering is climbing without ropes in shorter sequences focused on harder movement - just you and the rock with no rope to help (or hinder). THE CHILDREN’S VILLAGE AT CHRISTIAN CITY PROVIDES HOPE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

NOT FAR AWAY, A MOTHER AND HER YOUNG CHILDREN LAY HUDDLED TOGETHER IN THEIR ONLY PLACE OF SHELTER, SAFETY AND SOLACE - A CAR. Their hearts soaked in fear, worry and despair. Such situations are a reflection of families pushed to the brink of life because of sudden or prolonged illness, joblessness, drug addiction or homelessness. But what if all of these hardships are absolved by a second chance, where lives are lifted and restored by the wholesomeness of security, hope and faith? Those can be found with one phone call to Christian City. Tucked away on a quiet, residential, gated campus in South Fulton, the Christian City Children’s Village Residential Program offers homes for children in crisis. Other programs include a 24/7 Safe Place Runaway & Homeless Youth Program, Thrive Graduate Transition Program for high school graduates, and Crossroads Foster Care & Adoption Program. Shavonda and Roc are young parents of three children who were constantly trying to make ends meet. For years, the family shuffled back and forth, living with relatives and friends, and sometimes spending CONTINUED >

the nights in hotels or in their car. One day, Shavonda chose to face the stark reality of her family’s living conditions. “I decided after that last weekend I spent with my kids in a hotel room that I would come and visit Christian City. I didn’t have any more money. [The kids] needed food.” But seeking help for her children meant being temporarily separated from them so she could get her life in order again to adequately provide for their basic needs - food, clothing and shelter. When Shavonda first arrived at Christian City, she was full of apprehension. But Kelvin Thompson, one of the human service professionals, along with his wife, Jill Thompson, who have been serving families in crisis at Christian City for the past 33 years, helped put the young mother’s mind at ease. Although she was in tears and did not want to be separated from her children, Shavonda was comforted by what she heard the day she came to the Children’s Village. “You know, we’re not trying to take your kids from you. We’re simply trying to be your hands and feet until you can get back on your feet.” Shavonda realized that her children would be well taken care of at the Children’s Village. Christian City’s Children & Family Programs are designed to partner with families and children in crisis, to work through challenges and ultimately reunite the children with their biological kinship. The Children’s Village core support team which consist of a human service professional (HSP), a therapist, a houseparent couple, and the program executive, works in unison to care for the children physically, emotionally and academically. Sometimes this process takes months or even years. Because of their tumultuous past, it’s not uncommon for the new children to enter the program with moderate behavioral or emotional strain. Since reunification with families is the ultimate goal, engaging the children’s biological parents or relatives

THE BICYCLE BOOM WHEN A VIRUS SHUT DOWN THE WORLD, MANY PEOPLE PULLED ON THEIR PADDED PANTS AND SOUGHT FREEDOM ON WHEELS. From shredding mountain trails to cruising country roads, pandemic pedalers rediscovered the joy of cycling. Taylor Schmeck, co-owner of Senoia Bicycle

has

seen

everyone

from

kids to grandparents join the bicycle boom. “When group sports were cut out and the gyms closed, bikes became a way to get families outside spending time together,” she said. But increased demand has caused shortages. Jeanette Smith of Atlanta Trek in Peachtree City said, “High-end road bikes and mountain bikes have been hard to get and sell out quickly.” Ready to join the biking trend? With quality bikes ranging from the $400s to more than $9,000, it’s important to choose the right size and type of bike. Many bike shops offer rentals that let cyclists try before they buy. Smith said novices should consider where they will be riding, fitness level, and what they expect to do—touring, mountain biking, or road riding in groups.

THE JOY

KNOW YOUR BIKE TYPE

E-bikes: Motors offer assistance to get up hills or

when you’re tired.

Gravel Bikes: A comfortable ride on multiple ter-

rains including gravel roads.

Road Bikes: Designed for speed on paved surfaces. Mountain Bikes: Features include wider tires for better traction on rough terrain. Hybrid Bikes: Combine characteristics of specialty bikes to handle a variety of riding conditions.

THE RIGHT STUFF A helmet is a no-brainer. And it’s a necessity to see and be seen with front and tail lights. Every rider needs a way to hydrate either with water bottle cages and bottles, or a hydration backpack. Keep it rolling with a flat kit. Other general maintenance items include a bike pump, chain lube, Allen wrenches and cleaning supplies. For serious cyclists padded shorts, cycling jerseys, clipless pedals and shoes, computers and GPS units become necessities.

It's important for bikes and cars to share the roads.

CYCLE SAFELY “Cyclists are required to follow the same traffic rules as cars,” Smith said. “It is courteous for cyclists to fall in a single file line when on the road when a car is behind, but cyclists are not required to do so. The law states that cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast and that vehicles must give 3 feet of space while passing a cyclist. It is a mutual respect situation … anything we can do to promote goodwill and respect one another’s rights is a good thing.” Schmeck feels that bike education is important for riders and non-riders. “Remember that cyclist on the road is someone else’s mother, father, sister, brother, child,” she said. GIVING BACK MEET CLEARWATER ACADEMY’S FURBULOUS THERAPY DOG, LIBBY.

ARTICLE AMY BEAUCHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A ROU N D O F A - PAW S EACH WEEK AT CLEARWATER ACADEMY, A FURRY, FOUR-LEGGED VISITOR ARRIVES TO SHARE A GOOD BOOK AND SWEET HUGS. Certified Therapy Dog Libby made her 100th visit this past May as a treasured member of ClearWater’s program for students with learning differences. Owner Becky Hall related that Libby’s enthusiasm for time with the students has never waned with tail-wagging happiness only increasing with anticipation of visits. Libby has indeed wagged and cuddled her way into the hearts of Becky Hall and Libby in front of CWA

the students with her soothing, attentive ways. Selected readers share a favorite book as Libby listens, with other students at times just needing that wonderful feeling of holding her in their arms

highlight of our week at CWA. They bring joy not only to the students but to the staff as well!” During a previous zoom meeting, one student was thrilled when she saw Libby perk up her ears at the sound of the student’s voice. That same student shared, “Libby brings me comfort and love. I feel good when reading to her because it makes me a better reader, and Mrs. Becky helps me with words. When I walk in, Libby gets excited, and I pet her, and then she sits on her special blanket. She looks at me, and when I show her pictures, she puts her nose on them. What I like best is that Libby is so soft and cuddly.” It seems we could all use a little ”Libby” in our lives.
