ee Haney is standing proof that if at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again. When he was six, Haney wanted to grow up to be Hercules, and a few years later, tested his prowess by throwing a boulder over his father’s car. It went through the window.

“That was my first true test of strength, and it didn’t work,” says Haney with a laugh. It wasn’t that much longer until he could easily throw the boulder over the car — and probably a few more as well.

Championship eight consecutive times. Arnold Schwarzenegger can only claim seven. Haney, who lives in Fayette, was also the youngest Mr. Olympia to retire. At 31, he walked away and started a business educating people on nutrition, motivation, training and sports training while professing his deep Christian faith.

“My record still stands today, and that is what drove me to that level of success in bodybuilding. I did something no one else has done,” he says. Adding, “Bodybuilding is an art, a sport. It’s taking the body to new levels of perfection and symmetry. There’s nothing egotistical about it. You have to create the image of a perfect body.”

After his retirement, he and his wife decided to rear their children on the southside of Atlanta, near the airport for traveling and close to family in Spartanburg, S.C. “We chose Fayette because the school system is good, the community is safe and parents are very involved in the schools.”

Today, Haney not only spreads the word of fitness, motivation and doing good when he speaks to groups, but he also has a variety of businesses aimed at the same purpose. TotaLee Fit Workshop, for instance, provides insights about proper nutrition and offers a hands-on exercise workshop that is perfect for civic organizations, corporations and churches.

He and his certified trainers design a lifestyle program to help people reach their fitness goals. Professional athletes and coaches call him for goal-specific sports training and nutrition programs while celebrities look for overall fitness training. Want to know if it works? Just ask Evander Holyfield, Gary Sheffield and Steve Harvey. They’re all clients.

He also has a line of supplements designed to aid in everything from detox, too fat burning to age management and weight loss.

Haney, along with Steve Harvey, are starting the Lee Haney’s Physique and Fitness Games, a 30-day transformation challenge that will have up to $2,500 in cash and prizes.

“The saddest thing is to see people die prematurely, especially if it could be prevented,” he says. “I don’t put things in my body that will rob me of my energy and put stress on my internal organs. If you have this knowledge, you must use it.”

Haney never wavered in his quest to be Hercules. “My parents listened to me and saw I had a natural talent.” With a pair of plastic barbells, he trained from the time he was 11. In high school, he won Mr. South Carolina on his second try. In 1979 he won Teen Mr. America; in 1982, he took home the Junior Nationals, the National and World Amateur Championships titles. In 1983 he placed third the first time he tried for the Mr. Olympia title and then starting in 1984, he held the Mr. Olympia title consecutively until 1991.

His religion was another part. “Being a born again Christian plays a role in everything I do. I know God favored me and gave me a gift, and I use it to impact the world for good.”

Health and fitness are more than “jumping around,” he says. It’s an attitude of doing the right things. “I’m an ambassador of goodness and good will. I go from highs to highs. I don’t have room for any lows. Sure, we’ve had trials, and it’s not all tiptoeing through the tulips. But every day is a high. I can’t wait to see what’s next for me.”

You are noted as having a fresh perspective on chronic pain. What sort of meth-

ods and approaches do you consider and utilize for diagnosis and treatment?

"I had my training at Harvard in Boston. The Boston and New England region is the epicenter for the opioid epidemic and the prescription drug overdose crisis. While I was training there I studied pain management. It kind of shaped the way I viewed the field and the agony associated with chronic pain. I personally and firmly believe in a multifaceted approach to pain management. One that incorporates physical and aquatic therapy. I use anti-inflammatory neuropathic medications. I also do targeted injection therapy that is guided by x-rays or ultrasound for pain management. As a last resort, I will do opioids for carefully selected patients with very close follow-up. My practice has a psychologist on staff as well.”

What are the most commonly diagnosed conditions in men?

“The NIH (National Institute of Health) reports that lower back pain is the most commonly reported pain condition for men. About 84 percent of my male patients are overweight by BMI standards. Carrying an extra 5 pounds of abdominal weight translates into 15 pounds on the back because of the way the spine is curved to support the frame. Things like prolonged sitting is extremely unhealthy for your back because of the spine mechanics. So, folks that have a long commute sitting in a car for an hour and a half each week, or who have sedentary jobs sitting behind a desk at a computer, those things are what exacerbate lower back pain. For men, if you have more abdominal girth that is particularly bad. " What are some of your best fitness suggestions for prevention and treatment of chronic pain?

“When I recommend physical therapy, the focus is on core stabilization and core strengthening. I believe in a holistic approach to fitness overall. I 20

recommend exercising three times a week for 30 minutes or more. That can be any kind of physical activity that you can do routinely. Also, things like managing stress levels and getting enough sleep are critical from preventing conditions from persisting and worsening. In terms of specific exercises, I think lots of stretching and improved flexibility help with the tension and muscle spasms associated with pain. So, if you do a daily stretch for about 10 to 15 minutes in the morning before going to work that will pay a lot of dividends over the course of the day in addition to cardiovascular exercise.”

Are there specific hobbies that men can take up that incorporate these fitness goals into their daily routines?

“Each person is different, and I tell my patients it is important to pick a hobby or exercise routine that they can perform in a safe way and doesn’t cause any induced stress on their body. I like the low impact exercises like walking, swimming, yoga and Pilates. All of those will incorporate some amount of flexibility training, a lot of stretching, and it will also help with cardiovascular health. The appropriate level of exercise depends on your current fitness level and medical conditions. Anyone with pain symptoms should consult their physician to assist in developing an appropriate exercise routine. I routinely go over this with my patients so that I can devise specific plans for them.”

Are there specific foods or dietary supplements that you suggest?

“I’m thinking of ones with a high antioxidant load. That is certainly recommended. Antioxidants are the scavenger molecules that help to combat the harmful pain inducing signals that are called free radicals. So, Vitamin C and Vitamin E found in fruits and vegetables have potent antioxidants. The B Vitamin, especially B12, has both analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects for lower back pain. Vitamin D which comes from sunlight and fortified milk also suppresses inflammation.”

What are some of your personal fitness and dietary secrets?

“I maintain my weight by eating small meals throughout the day. My favorite snacks are almonds, I like peanuts as well. They are protein rich and have valuable fatty acids that are good for you. I weight lift four days a week, and I play racquetball at least two-three times a week."

Burning Calories Dog-On-It Did you ever think about getting fit while helping a man’s best friend? And could there be anything better? It turns out it’s not too good to be true. You can burn calories and make a dog’s day at Fayette County Animal Shelter and it’s an awesome partnership. Donna Evans an animal control officer says, “They’re not only getting the interaction with people, but they also get to go outside.” The shelter offers a chance for people to walk our canine friends who are waiting to be adopted, and for one animal lover, walking these rescues has been the lifestyle change she needed after a heart problem. “Walking was on the list of approved exercise activities and I loved dogs, so this seemed to be a good fit for me,” says Jeanie Mahoney, a retired IT Project Manager. Walking the dog's several miles a week has helped Jeanie reach her goal weight after losing 57lbs. “The dogs held me accountable. On the days I was not quite in the mood to put in the steps, I just needed to picture them stuck in their kennels to get motivated.” Jeanie says the dogs reward her with kisses, tail wags and pure doggie joy.

he Fayette County NAACP Branch recently celebrated its 19th annual Freedom Fund Banquet. The banquet was held on October 29 at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City and attracted nearly 300 attendees. This year’s banquet theme was “Taking Responsibility,” and it is critical with the demographic shift toward a more diverse Fayette County where African Americans are compelled to step up and be fully responsible for improving their communities, schools, government, businesses and eliminating racism.

The Fayette County NAACP Branch was chartered in 1997 and has challenged and advocated against discrimination and racism in governments, schools and the justice system.

The purpose of the branch is to continue to make a positive impact on the quality of life for the citizens of Fayette County through political empowerment with increased voter registration and participation; strengthening and encouraging excellence in the Youth Council; challenging and fighting against injustices of any kind; contributing to cultural, educational, social and political programs; involvement in the development of a socially healthy community; assisting those who strive to monitor and reduce crime; and promoting educational, social, political and economic equality and opportunities.

Throughout its history, the Branch has addressed inequities in school discipline, forced the resignation of a racist judge, established the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade and program and afforded opportunities for students to achieve full college scholarships. Most notably, a significant accomplishment for the Branch has been bringing change to Fayette County from an At-large to District voting for electing county commissioner and school board officials. The “Taking Responsibility” initiative in Fayette County is a movement towards diversity and inclusion where every deserving citizen has an equal opportunity in making the county a great place to live.

Douglas Hooker, Atlanta Regional Commission Executive Director, was the keynote speaker at the Freedom Fund Banquet and three individuals were honored for their community service including Pam Reid, Muriel Powell, and George Olverson. Sam Mahone was honored at the banquet with the U.S. Congressman John Lewis Freedom Fighter Award and Fayette Branch NAACP President John E. Jones was awarded the organization’s President’s Award.

Alice Jones, the Youth Advisor for the NAACP Fayette County Youth Council, described the banquet as “good and humbling.”

“People came dressed up. Jones says. “The awards process was awesome.” She was also surprised with an award at the banquet for her work with the Youth Council.

Jones predicted an increased membership for the NAACP in the future given the recent presidential election. The branch has already welcomed ten new members since the election, so the future of the organization looks bright.
