MAKING SAFETY FUN The Fayetteville Police Department hosted the Second Annual Public Safety Fall Festival at the Fayette County Justice Center on October 21. Attendees had the opportunity to meet public safety personnel, sit in a patrol car, observe canine demonstrations, learn about a SWAT team and check out a ladder truck display. As a precursor to Halloween, there was also a hay ride, trick or treating and a haunted trail for the kids. Games, food and fun made the evening an enjoyable learning experience for all ages.

SPOOKY FUN HAD BY ALL Fayetteville’s Main Street welcomed all the little ghosts and goblins to enjoy a day of spooky delight on October 29. The Pumpkin Festival/ Trick or Treating on Main Street allowed participants to revel in the creativity and joy of the decorated pumpkins. A costume contest preceded trick or treating, with candy and goodies given by local vendors. 14

very nine seconds, a woman is assaulted or beaten in America, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. One-in-three women and one-in-four men have been physically abused by an intimate partner. Victims of domestic violence are often scared, hurting and think they have nowhere to turn. For residents of Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties, however, there is a place of refuge—a place of safety and a place of hope. It’s Promise Place. The mission of this nonprofit organization is simple: Promise Place strives to prevent domestic violence while providing a way out for those who need it. “We have a crisis hotline that’s manned 24 hours," Promise Place board member Venis Sims says. "Sometimes you can be afraid for your life so that hotline can be a lifesaver.” “We also provide emergency services to victims,” Sims continues. “We provide immediate shelter through safe houses and transitional homes for people who are in immediate danger of domestic violence. We are giving these people a safe haven and trying to get them out of harm’s way.” Promise Place offers much more than housing for adults and their children. Victims can receive food and toiletries. Legal advocacy services, which include help obtaining restraining orders, are also available to victims. Services are readily accessible and free of charge. Promise Place also operates educational programs in hopes of halting domestic violence before it starts. “We have a program in the high schools for prevention of domestic violence for teens. We’re starting to teach that as early as the ninth grade. We actually go into the schools,” Sims says. As important as it is to tend to the external needs of each person, it’s just as crucial to assist with their healing on the inside. Promise Place does this through professional counseling services and support groups. “We are rebuilding them and letting them know that it’s not their fault because that’s huge. (There’s) the psychological part of it—that for some reason they deserve this treatment,” Sims notes. After almost three decades of working to help heal the hurting, Promise Place has made a tremendous impact. More than 3,000 victims of domestic violence and their children receive assistance each year from Promise Place. Over the past year, close to 200 women and children received shelter. Through the legal advocacy program, almost 90 Family Violence Protective Orders were filed. The numbers are encouraging. For Sims, personal interactions have made all the difference. Promise Place continues to do more to bring awareness to the issue. In October, it held the 12th Annual Run to End Domestic

“People have come to me, once they’ve heard that I’m involved with Promise Place, and they let go and tell me their stories. One of them told me specifically that Promise Place was a lifesaver for them,” Sims says. “She thanked me. I felt really humbled. That was the first time it really hit me. Wow, this place is really doing some things.” 16

Everybody can participate,” says Sims. And Sims, along with the legions of volunteers and support staff at Promise Place, hopes for continued annual participation. As one of its biggest annual fundraisers, the run serves to bring greater awareness to the goals of Promise Place, and provide much needed financial support. Sims says she hopes people will consider supporting Promise Place, whether through monetary donations, volunteering or donating needed items. The ability to provide items free to those who need them is a necessary expense. Promise Place staff feel privileged to do it. “We are that entity that, for one, can listen, and then act to help people who have to deal with this.” And that says it all.

The Peachtree City School of Dance is the brainchild of Director Kathleen Senger, who started dancing at the age of three and was formerly a ballet dancer with the Toledo Ballet Company. She also trained with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). Senger started the school in 2002 in one room filled with 45 students. She and her husband built the dance school in 2007 that now houses four studios and a retail boutique. According to Senger, the philosophy of the school coincides with that of ABT, which is to provide high-quality dance training in an atmosphere that nurtures children. “We are very uplifting and positive in the way that we teach the art of dance,” Senger says. “We believe that everybody who comes in here is talented in their own special way.” The dance school offers classes for ages 2 and up, including the professional level, ballet, tap, jazz, hiphop as well as other techniques. The school also supports “Project Plié,” an initiative started by ABT ’s first African-American Principal Dancer Misty Copeland that promotes diversity in ballet and throughout ballet companies. “It’s really important to me as a former

When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,

inding the perfect gift for everyone in your life may seem impossible during the holiday season. Purchasing a gift can take a lot of time and leave a huge dent in an already tight holiday budget. Often, gift giving can turn into a stressful occasion. For Fayetteville resident Joy Moye, the stresses of gift giving are never a concern in her household. Instead, her holidays are spent at home with her family where she has found a way to create handmade holiday gifts for everyone in her life. Joy's creations are a treasured and anticipated treat that people wait patiently for all year. Joy sticks with a traditional and classic holiday gift that anyone of any age or background can enjoy: a gingerbread man. It all started with an article she read in the 1997 Martha Stewart Living Holiday Edition magazine. The focus was on all things gingerbread, and that is when “Joy’s gingerbread boys” were born. She continues the tradition every year, and people have been eating it up ever since. When you step into Joy’s home during the holiday season, the smell of ginger fills your senses, causing a warm and cozy sensation all over. “It’s not the holidays until my house smells like gingerbread,” says Joy. Donning her grandmother’s 1960s-style ric-rac-embellished apron,

Joy puts on her Elvis Christmas CD and gets herself into the holiday spirit. Growing up, she baked cookies with her grandmother every holiday season. “My grandmother and I used to bake cookies when I was younger. It takes me back, and it makes it magical for me,” she says. Making the boys is normally a process. She'll spend one day making the dough. The next day, she might prepare all the royal icing, filling each piping bag with brightly-colored icing for decoration. The ingredients stay chilled in the refrigerator until an occasion arises when she needs to make her gingerbread boys. She then takes what dough she needs to bake, saving the rest of the dough for later. Typical occasions might include school parties for her two children, Hayden and Emily, or dinner parties at friends’ houses. Her husband Brent even gets a piece of the excitement—or pieces rather. He looks forward to the “infirmary,” or the bag of gingerbread appendages that didn’t make the cut. What makes receiving a homemade gingerbread boy so exciting? Joy says it's enjoying a handmade gift that took time and consideration to make. Everyone gets a unique handcrafted gingerbread boy to admire and devour. So how can you create your own gingerbread boys to share this season?

Here is the original recipe that Joy has been using since 1997:

For the Dough • 6 cups sifted all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 1 cup unsalted butter • 1 cup dark-brown sugar, packed • 4 teaspoons ground ginger • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1½ teaspoons ground cloves • 1½ teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon finely ground pepper • 2 large eggs • 1 cup unsulfured molasses

For the Royal Icing • 2 large egg whites • 1 pound confectioner’s sugar • Food coloring

Step 1: Sift together flour, baking soda and baking powder in a large bowl. Set aside. Step 2: Add cream, butter and brown sugar into an electric mixer. Mix until fluffy. Mix in spices, salt and pepper. Then add in eggs and molasses. Add in flour on low speed. Step 3: Divide mixture into 3 equal parts; wrap in plastic and chill for 1 hour. Step 4: Heat oven to 350 ̊. Roll out dough on a floured work surface about ⅛ inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut out desired gingerbread man shapes. Step 5: Transfer to baking sheets lined with wax paper. Refrigerate until firm. Step 6: Bake 8-10 minutes, until crisp. Step 7: Cool on wire racks and decorate

In an electric mixer beat egg whites, sugar, and two teaspoons of water on low speed for 10 minutes. Add food coloring to achieve the desired color. Moye typically puts each cookie into a cellophane bag after they have been decorated. She secures the bags with decorative holiday ribbons and attaches a sentimental note to each one. No gingerbread boy gets away without a personal touch, which makes them each unique and meaningful. This holiday season, take a tip from Moye and return to a timeless family tradition.
