September 2024 Publisher’s Letter
Dear Reader,
I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.
Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in [city] to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely you!

THE THRILL OF THE FIND
SUSTAINABLE STYLE WITH RECYCLED LINES
ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLIE DEMARTINO DESIGN STUDIO
When former Recycled Lines customers Christina Boehk and Michelle DeMartino heard the founders of the company were interested in selling the business, the lifelong friends jumped at the chance to realize their dream of owning a small business together. Since 2022, the Fairfield moms have revamped and expanded the brand to make it their own. Looking to add that must-have piece to your wardrobe or looking to offload pieces to become someone else’s treasure? - Recycled Lines is fast becoming the first stop for fashion for the whole family.
FLM: HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE RECYCLED LINES?
M & C: Recycled Lines provides consigned clothing to both a broad, yet unique audience that includes boys, men, women and girls. Many Fairfield County consignment shops specialize only in women’s, teens and girls clothing. However, our founders, mothers of Fairfield Prep students, saw this niche community of young men and saw the need to reuse prep school uniforms. Christina and I took the chance to include women’s and girls clothing and have had much success.
FLM: WHY CONSIGN?
M: Why pay full or sale price when you can find like-new clothing for half off or more! With the rise of performance fabric, clothing has become even more reusable than it was in the past. These fabrics aren’t prone to fading, wear and tear, and still look fantastic after multiple uses, they are the perfect candidates for consignment. Of course not all clothing is performance, but when clothing is loved and well-maintained, it remains desirable for future usage.
C: The thrill of the find is what I love about consignment. You can find pieces that are unique or past seasons but in likenew condition. As a consignor, it gives you the chance to put your clothing back into circulation and give it a second chance all while making money of your own!
FLM: HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK FOR CONSIGNING AND FOR SHOPPING?
C & M: Recycled Lines collects clothing on a quarterly basis based on seasonal needs. We hold quarterly pop-up sales at the Fairfield Museum and update our inventory on our Recycled Lines website regularly.
FLM: CLOSET CLEAN OUTS CAN BE OVERWHELMING. CAN YOU GIVE TIPS OR ADVICE ON HOW BEST TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS FOR CONSIGNMENT?
M: We encourage our consignors to ask themselves, would I buy this item, is it still in style or is it dated? If it feels dated, we ask that they donate the items to those in need. Clothing that is still fashionable sells, so that is what we are looking for, clean, classic, clothing.
C: When I clean my closet out, I ask myself ‘When was the last time I wore this?’ If I haven’t worn an item of clothing in a while it’s time to part with it even though in the back of my mind, I think I might wear it - the reality is I’m not going to wear it. So that would be an item I would part with and give it a second home.
FLM: WHAT ARE YOU TYPICALLY LOOKING FOR? WHAT ARE POPULAR ITEMS YOUR CLIENTS SHOP FOR?
M: We feature classic, coastal brands such as Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, J.Crew and Patagonia. Our most popular items include navy blazers, button down shirts, khakis ties, and belts for men and boys. Women’s and girls’ bestsellers include dresses and pretty blouses.
C: Our activewear is a hot seller too - anything Lululemon, Athelta and Aviator Nation!
FLM: WHAT IS A MUST-HAVE FOR FALL?
M: This fall I’ll be on the look-out for the perfect jacket that will look great with jeans for an easy put-together appearance.
C: A must have for this Fall will definitely be a coastal cotton sweater you can pair with jeans or throw over your shoulders on a chilly night!
FLM: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST, BEING SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS IN FAIRFIELD?
M: I find the relationships we’ve formed with our customers and consignors the most rewarding. While Fairfield is a large town, the personal connections we have with our Recycled Lines family makes it feel like we are truly part of this community and we are providing a wonderful service to our fellow Fairfield families. Recycled Lines has allowed us to work part-time, on our own schedule, and provide quality consigned clothing to our community and to those in need.
C: The relationships we have with our customers and consignors for sure! We have met so many great people along the way and that truly has been the most rewarding. Like Michelle said, working on our own schedule is also a perk - we both have busy families and being able to work around them is great.

STAIRWAY TO STYLE
ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIDI CURRAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Sam Recupero, Owner of Absolute Floor Design, and Kristin Nick, Founder and principal designer at Tides Change Design, recently joined forces, bringing together their expertise to customers as the new Absolute Floor & Design, located in the heart of Black Rock on Fairfield Ave. The beautifully redesigned showroom is an inviting space for all their clients, who range

from young families looking for easy-to-care-for flooring options to interior designers working on high-end, custom residential designs to large-scale commercial projects. “With Kristin on board, we redesigned the showroom to better serve our clientele and we now offer full interior design services. With her residential and commercial design expertise and my construction background, we can now offer comprehensive design services for any project. From flooring and finishes to renovation projects or new build construction, we are excited to provide this new level of customized service to our customers,” says Sam.
The new showroom is a thoughtful modern remodel, spotlighting Absolute Floor & Design’s complete product offerings, setting them apart from the overwhelming experience often felt at big box retailers. The space is an expertly curated collection that includes beautiful hand-sewn wool rugs perfect for living rooms or stair runners and indoor/outdoor performance rugs that are stylish, easy to clean, and incredibly durable. The collection of luxury vinyl flooring is equally impressive. “They not only give you that gorgeous hardwood look but are also super durable and low-maintenance. tear from kids and pets.” With the addition of Kristin, who is a widely known tastemaker across Fairfield County, the showroom has expanded with window shades, tiles, hardware finishes, lights, wallpapers, and even custom kitchen and bathroom vanities made by the in-house carpentry shop.
Despite the exciting changes in the showroom, Sam and Kristin remain true to the company’s original philosophy, Anchored In Style & Quality. “We take pride in the quality, speed, and transparency of all our projects.” Absolute Floor & Design is a pioneer in customer service excellence and topnotch products for every budget. For over 20 years, the company’s core values are a testament to these principles, combined with an unmatched style that keeps an eye on trends while staying true to timeless elements. “ Our local area’s natural beauty and coastal influence are evident in our designs through texture and color. I encourage clients to draw inspiration from organic sources rather than images on social media, which can become repetitive and quickly outdated,” adds Kristin, whose knowledge and guidance are also unparalleled.
For Fall, Kristin notes, there is a shift from overly simplified white interiors and muted colors to spaces with more character, organic, natural textures, and warmer tones. “Some of our favorite trends feature timeless elements used in unique ways, such as carpets that blend wool and sisal, engineered hardwood with colorful painted patterns . Although the process with clients is always collaborative, Kristin suggests carefully considering lifestyle and prioritizing the most critical factors when renovating, redecorating, or just looking for a simple home update. Entryways are often overlooked as a place that can provide a big impact with minimal effort no matter the budget. “The entryway is an easy way to introduce character into your home. We love using interesting stair runners with color, pattern,
For both Sam and Kristin, the most rewarding part of their work is seeing their clients truly enjoying the spaces Absolute Floor & Design has helped create. ”Whether it’s a family relaxing on a living room rug we installed or a pet happily running up a staircase with a carpet runner we put in, it’s a joy to see people enjoying their new spaces. That’s what it’s all about for us— helping people transform their spaces into something they love and that brings them happiness in their homes.”

The skyrocketing success of hometown juggernaut CAKES body started as many new businesses do - as a side hustle. Knowing firsthand that in order to feel good in any outfit, women need to feel good underneath it all, Fairfield resident Taylor Capuano and her twin sister Casey set out to solve this common fashion problem. Launched in 2022, CAKES are grippy inserts designed for workout, lounge, and swimwear,
providing the perfect coverage - making all close-fitting tops comfortable and giving their diverse customers, women in all stages of their lives, a renewed sense of confidence. Without big budgets or funding, the once fledgling brand leaned into TikTok, creating content to generate a following from scratch. They immediately started building a community that largely grew their customer base. The first

video that went viral was a critical turning point in the business and a testament to the impact of social media when you have a worthy product line. It has become an essential pillar of Taylor’s values of lifting up other entrepreneurs by sharing some of the secrets of her success, “We would not have a business if it weren’t for TikTok. I wish more people knew about the power of social media when bootstrapping a business because I think more people would feel empowered to start businesses. We started with zero dollars in a marketing budget, no investors, no existing social media presence and really focused on showcasing our solutions on TikTok. We went from a few hundred units a month to thousands of units overnight to thousands of units over lunch.”
Another cornerstone of the company is giving back. From the start, CAKES body has been committed to using its platform to support and educate on women’s health. $1 of every purchase is donated to breast cancer causes. Taylor notes, “Our first customer email was from a woman who said ‘CAKES changed my life’ - we were completely blown away. She was a young breast cancer survivor. Because our covers are delicate on the skin, she was able to get the gentle coverage she needed. It made us realize there was a much deeper purpose for us and this company, and it has inspired so many new solutions that we are working on now.” That mission is impressive and powerful as CAKES has currently donated over $ 1 million to breast cancer research.
With CAKES’s continued success and its growing impact on their community, Taylor and her team are just getting started. New product launches and collaborations are on the horizon, “We are coming out with some amazing “lift”
solutions in partnership with a handful of celebrity stylists this Fall going into fashion week in hopes of making these stylist secrets more accessible to the everyday woman.” There’s no gatekeeping here. Access is at the core of the brand’s success - from highlighting women’s health needs to supporting other small business owners; CAKES body is a company for women by women. As Taylor notes, “The beauty in our story is that it is very simple and very grassroots. We always say if we can do it, anyone can. It’s been a very empowering experience.”
