We love May at Fairfield Lifestyle Magazine! The grass is growing, the trees are blooming and the flowers are beginning to blossom. It is also the month we celebrate Mother’s Day. Each and every one of us has certainly had a special relative, teacher, neighbor, co-worker or friend who has influenced us and made us a better person. Though Mother’s Day is a day we traditionally celebrate our mothers, we feel that we should celebrate all the women in our lives who have helped us along our path.
mother fostered my love of cooking for others.
We are so excited to introduce you to another mom who is sharing her love of cooking Mexican food in her recently opened to go and catering establishment, Tümü. You will love reading her story and are sure you will want to try the shrimp cocktail recipe she shared with us.
Happy May Fairfield! We hope you enjoy this month and take some time out to recognize and thank all the women who influenced and continue to influence your life.

Photography: Photo provided by Robinson’s Painting & Home Improvements, LLC Photography: Photo provided by Coastal Waters Design, LLC Photography: Frances V. Isaac PhotographyThere is no shortage of amazing women in Fairfield. We’d like to introduce you to a few. And although they all have taken different paths and lead very different lives, they have a common thread: Dynamic women who enrich our community.
After a lustrous career making the Manhattan chic even chicer, Danielle brought her unparalleled talent to beautify the women in Fairfield with the opening of her refined boutique salon.
Q: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I grew up in Connecticut and moved to the city when I was 18 for beauty school. I worked at a few high-end salons before landing at the infamous Marie Robinson salon, where I learned everything I know about hair. I have two beautiful boys and a great husband.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION?
A: My connection to Fairfield is my lovely sister! She’s the reason we moved here. You can find us at Sasco Beach. We love Fairfield and we’re so happy with our decision.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?
I would say my biggest accomplishment is somehow balancing work, being a wife, a mother, a friend and finding time for me — and making that somehow all work smoothly.
Q: BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
My husband always gives me the best advice. The two things that stick with me the most are, “If your chapter doesn’t change, no one will read your book.” I also love, “Life is not a dress rehearsal!”
Q: WHO INSPIRES YOU?
My Dad is a huge inspiration to me. He started his own business in his 20s. My mentor, Marie Robinson is a big role model for me. My husband & my sister are also a consistent daily inspiration.
@camorosalon
Beverly knows all about supporting the community. She is an adviser, mentor, advocate and expert to new and existing businesses throughout Fairfield.
Q: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was born and raised in Danbury. I’m the youngest of 3 and the first to attend college. I graduated from Western CT University, with a BS in Education. I spent the majority of my career in Educational Publishing, first at Grolier Educational Publishing. I literally started as a secretary and was ultimately promoted to one of the first female Vice Presidents in the company. This was during a time that was especially tough for women to advance and succeed. After my 20-year career with Grolier, I held many other leadership roles in the NYC publishing industry including President of Facts on File.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION?
As President and CEO of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, it is my responsibility to help and advocate “Buy Local” for our members and the local business community. I am grateful for my success in corporate America, which taught me every aspect of the business world. I brought that knowledge to the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, and I am extremely proud of our achievements to date. This is my 10th anniversary, and so much has been done during this time. We have tripled our membership, expanded the BOD to 20 people, and provided a variety of tools and resources for our members to not only sustain their businesses, but grow and stay in Fairfield. Notably, we have established a wonderful partnership with the Town of Fairfield, so that together, we can provide the very best to the local business community, providing creative, consistent and unending support.
Q: BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED?
Throughout my career, I was lucky enough to have great colleagues and make wonderful friendships. I truly respect and regard these relationships that were built over the years, many of whom have become life-long friends. My biggest lesson learned is that it takes a village of support, all types of people, to gain inspiration, knowledge and the conviction to confidently move forward. When I joined the Chamber 10 years ago, we immediately established a new slogan: Building Relationships, Building Business. I believe in that slogan, and that’s how it works throughout life.
Q: ANY SECRETS OR TIPS ON HOW TO JUGGLE IT ALL?
Women are fabulous multitaskers for sure, within every lifestyle! Juggle at your own pace, but don’t let yourself burn out – this can be achieved by paying attention to personal needs, family, friends, good health and what truly makes you happy.
Gaelle’s coastal aesthetic, sunny disposition and optimistic mindset can not only be felt in the interiors she creates but is also reflected in her Instagram posts which are always authentic, uplifting and inspiring.
Q: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I started my design adventure at a tech startup during the dot-com boom of the early 2000s and designed events around the globe for the international accounting firm, KPMG.
I also worked in commercial and residential design with some of Starwood Hotels’ most iconic brands, including St. Regis, W Hotels and Westin. I am currently the Founder and Creative Director of GLDESIGN, one of Fairfield County’s fastest growing design firms. My team and I weave beach living into every client’s home. I live in Fairfield with my family and we soak in all that the beach and beach living have to offer.
Q: BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED?
Wow this is a tough question! I am learning daily and truly believe that my “failures” have made me more successful than some of my biggest brightest moments. Biggest lesson? That life is fragile. After being faced with a massive life changing health crisis, I realized then and there that I needed to be more grateful for my body, my present life and that I was the only one who could be my change maker. Nobody else is in charge of your life. Make the changes now because you only live once. Don’t wait.
Q: WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by a collective group of women. My best friends, my mom and women that put themselves out there and aren’t afraid to just be. I am inspired by moments in time, not huge milestones… instead I gravitate toward the stuff that makes me feel inner happiness. A person that makes me laugh in a certain way or an experience that makes my heart feel like it’s soaring. I am the most inspired when I am humbled.
Q: WORDS TO LIVE BY:
When you cease to dream, you cease to live.

Kelly is a long time Fairfield resident and the quintessential Supermom. Along with her co-founders, Kelly launched Woofgang in 2017. By merging the love for their kids with the love for their dogs - by having their teens bake dog treats - an important mission was born.
I have been a Fairfield resident for close to 38 years. I have been happily married to my husband David for the past 33+ years. We raised our 3 children, all who went to school here in Fairfield through high school. They all make me proud and have made me a better person.
I helped start the non-profit, Team Woofgang, with 2 other amazing women, Kris Burbank and Amy Stern, along with a legion of great special needs families. For us moms, who were looking at our special young adults’ futures, we saw a great need as our young adults graduated from their state provided education. Since we launched, we have grown to over 70 Team Members and participants. They all range in abilities and we work hard to make our curriculum accessible to all. Our mission is to give vocational training to young adults with disabilities. We recognize that they can be life-long learners, and have evolved to add our focus to include providing them with the social opportunities they crave. It is very important to note that we don’t charge participants to be a part of our Team. We rely heavily on grants, donations and fundraisers to stay in operation.
It takes a village. The support of our families and the community are invaluable. The mothers and fathers of Team Woofgang are some of the most incredible humans I have ever met. Our volunteers and board members have the most beautiful, giving hearts. None of this is possible without their input.
My inspiration comes from these young adults and their families. The Team Members, all have their own secret powers and they light up when you recognize their gifts. The parents and guardians of these folks have perseverance and can-do attitudes that make you want to do more. The volunteers and our shift leaders are selfless people who want to make this world a better place for this population and they give it their all.
@woofgangcoImmediately upon meeting Naj, you start to feel your nervous system calming down, so it’s no wonder she pivoted to become an intuitive healer.
Q: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
My family and I moved to Fairfield almost 5 years ago from the UK. I have two amazing girls and a wonderful husband. I am the founder of two small businesses, Anxious Pup Club which I founded in 2022 and Luna Nur, which is my new baby, started this year. I would never in a million years have thought I’d own my own business, never mind two. After 15 years of financial operations experience, I definitely have the business know-how, but it was the product offering I didn’t know I had in me. I have always been a very intuitive person. I am excellent at feeding from the energy in the room and reflecting it back in a supportive way. I have also been very interested in natural incense and botanicals, originating from my Moroccan heritage. Anxious Pup Club offers a gentle approach to support for your dogs, using reiki, massage, and gentle training techniques. Luna Nur allows me to release my creative side, handcrafting a selection of natural ingredients to make bespoke bukhoor (incense).
Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION?
Moving from the UK, one thing that I identified immediately was the strong sense of community here. Whether it’s through the school support groups, as a Fairfield Center Stage family, joining one of the towns 5K events or volunteering as one of Al’s Angels - there is so much enrichment working with the community. Also, my personal refuge is within the healing community. I have had the support of so many amazing woman, showing that I can be my authentic self. My second home is the amazing Element50 store in town. The energy and support connected by the network of woman is elevating.
Q: WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
I am most proud of who I am today. I have taken risks, made mistakes and keep on the endless task of growth and direction. Life changes and we have to evolve. I know my girls would have been proud of me if I had stayed in my corporate job but now I feel they will not only be proud but also inspired, motivated and impressed.
Q: BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Even when other people do what you do, no one else does it like you. Be unapologetically you.
@anxiouspupclub @lunanurbukhoor
Laura is the ultimate connector. Before social media was a thing, Laura created an IRL platform for community and networking. She has uplifted and inspired many women all over town - all of whom consider her a great friend.
Q: TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I reside in one of the idyllic beach communities in Fairfield. I am blessed to work from my home as a sales and project management professional. I am a member of a very large family which keeps me very busy with family activities. I enjoy volunteering, and presently serve as Chair of the Human Services Commission for the Town of Fairfield. I love attending activities at my alma mater, Fairfield University, and other cultural and social activities in town including listening to live music and eating out at the abundant list of local restaurants. I also enjoy playing golf and going to the beach.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNITY CONNECTION?
I proudly founded a woman oriented social group in 2009 called Women for Women. Its focus is to connect all ages of women with one another in a relaxed and socially engaging environment. I have successfully engaged many local businesses to host us on a monthly basis which benefits both parties. The businesses gain exposure and the members get to meet with one another and experience an enriching new or existing location. Women for Women is an opportunity for all of the women to meet, navigate and share. And I have had the amazing gift of making many new girlfriends.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?
My biggest accomplishment is my career and the creation of Women for Women. I’m most proud of my ability to balance a nourishing family life and a fulfilling professional career.
Q: WORDS TO LIVE BY?
Don’t sweat the small stuff!
Growing up surrounded by great food, it’s no wonder Karla Krassin would surround her adult life with the flavors and ingredients she lovingly remembers being around while cooking with her mother and grandmothers. “I have always loved to cook,” recalls Karla. “I remember my mom gave me a few cooking lessons and I just loved it.” Baking was especially her forte. “I remember when I was young,
I used to love baking special desserts for my boyfriends and they loved eating them! I still love to bake. I just find it comforting and I love to decorate desserts to make each one unique and special.”
Born and raised in Mexico with her 4 siblings, Karla always wanted to experience all the world had to offer. After attending high school on the West Coast and living in Italy for a few years,
Karla found herself back in the United States to raise her now 13 year old son. But after living in Fairfield County for over 20 years, Karla was missing the tastes of home. “I found myself really craving the traditional and original flavors of authentic Mexican food, which is very different from what you typically find here.” This inspired her to finally open Tümü.
Karla has always loved the cooking process. To her, entertaining was more than just having people over. She enjoyed crafting a menu several days before and experimenting with table decor, creating the perfect atmosphere for her friends. This ethos is at the center of Tümü, a natural expansion of what she has always loved. Whether for take-out or catering, her dishes are inspired by her home and childhood. Since she loves to surround herself with beautiful things, Tümü also offers exquisite home goods from Mexico which honors and compliments that distinct vibe. “I wanted to share the beauty and culture of my Mexico and of course the fresh delicious food with our local community.”
Her pride in preparing authentic, healthy dishes can be tasted in every delicious bite. She lovingly uses her vast library of family recipes yet also appreciates variety. Karla nimbly changes her daily offerings, always keeping the menu fresh and original with only high-quality ingredients. For catering, her personal approach focuses on her client’s overall creative vision and customizing the menu to deliver the ultimate experience. “I want the food to be an extension of them and to deliver the ambiance they are seeking.” That tailor-made philosophy carries over as many customers have come in to ask her to prepare special dishes or help fulfill a certain craving which gets that added special Tümü flair. And the locals love it!
Karla beams, “Hands down the most rewarding and fulfilling thing for me is when someone loves my food. I have received so many calls from customers who just call to tell me how much they enjoyed the meal or how good they felt after eating my food.” She fondly remembers receiving that very first compliment shortly after opening. “They proceeded to say, ‘I just wanted you to know how wonderful the meal was’. Wow what an amazing feeling!” Being recognized and acknowledged about the taste, quality and her attention to detail- all the things Karla values, is greatly appreciated. “This never ever gets old and motivates me like you have no idea. The community has been unbelievably welcoming, and I am really enjoying meeting new people every day!”
Karla’s advice to home cooks is to always have some great staples in your pantry. She recommends a good olive oil, sea salt, fresh garlic, spices and lots of fresh herbs. She also suggests not to get too worried about making mistakes in the kitchen. With practice comes confidence. And just as her mother taught her, Karla now offers group cooking classes to help cooks of all levels prepare great food. Here Karla shares a simple yet flavor packed recipe, perfect for a Sunday meal by the pool or as a great party appetizer.
“Hands down the most rewarding and fulfilling thing for me is when someone loves my food. I have received so many calls from customers who just call to tell me how much they enjoyed the meal or how good they felt after eating my food.”
Ingredients
• 1 lb of small uncooked, shrimp (cleaned and peeled)
• 1 1/4 cups of ketchup (I like to use Primal Ketchup)
• 1 bottle tomato juice
• 2 cucumbers diced
• 2 jalapeños minced (change to serranos if you want it spicy)
• 3 plum tomatoes diced
• 1/2 onion finely diced
• chopped cilantro
• 1 avocado
• juice of 3 or 4 lemons
• salt and pepper to taste
• hot sauce (my favorite is Cholula)
• tostadas or saltines
Instructions:
1. To cook the shrimp - add water to a pot, once it boils add the shrimp and salt. Cook until the shrimp turns pink. Drain and transfer the shrimp to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Drain and set aside.
2. In a large serving bowl, add the shrimp, onion, tomato, cucumber, jalapeños, cilantro and mix well. Next, add the tomato juice, lemon juice, ketchup, salt and pepper. Mix well then add the hot sauce to your liking and finish with avocado.
3. Enjoy with saltines or tostadas

The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
Before Mother’s Day, go through everybody’s camera rolls and Instagram feeds and choose her favorite photos. Get them printed ahead of time so you can make a memory book. You might just love it so much you make it a yearly tradition.
Mom will truly appreciate you going out of your way to set her up with a massage or facial appointment. Invite her friends along, too!
Songs about mothers and mom’s favorite songs can come together into the perfect playlist to put on during brunch or dinner. You can either make it for her or take turns being DJ and alternate picks.
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favorite toppings. Mom gets the first pick, of course.
Croquet, cornhole, bocce, outdoor Jenga or horseshoes — what’s your family’s game of choice? Split into teams and drum up some friendly rivalry — while soaking in rays — with a backyard challenge. Make it an annual event, and pass around a trophy to the winner each year.
For the mom who’s always seeking adventure, a trip to your nearest amusement park will be a welcome surprise. Not only will you be able to treat her to her fill of funnel cakes and caramel corn, but she’ll enjoy all the rides and attractions her heart desires. If you ask us, it’s a win-win.
Sure, backyard barbecues are often associated with Father’s Day, but Mom loves her burgers and dogs, too, so why should Dad get all the fun? If the weather cooperates, fire up the grill!
If you do a DIY craft project, write a poem or come up with a silly dance, you know mom will love it because it is 100% you. No one can one-up a one-of-a-kind experience! You can make them for her and present them to her, or involve her in their creation.
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and dig in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she’ll be reminded of the special day — it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas.
Not only will you leave with a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be able to bond as you explore a new activity.
There’s nothing like waking up with the sun and going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Pick fresh produce and discover new favorites with mom, coffee in hand.
Whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes or getting video files off your phone and onto the TV, dig into the family archives and host a home-movie marathon. She’ll get emotional seeing how much everyone has grown.
Dad knows - Mom has a to-do list a mile long. Whether it’s tasks around the house or a DIY project, find out what has been nagging Mom and help her cross it off her list by doing it for her!
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling. 20
Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.

Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.
Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways- from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.
Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure and harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.
Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry infused Bourbon.
Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.
Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!
