Welcome to the home issue of Fairfield Lifestyle Magazine. This issue also marks the first anniversary of our magazine. A year ago this month we started this magazine, describing our mission to highlight the “local businesses, charities, experiences, events, and residents that make Fairfield so special”. We think that over the past year, we have gotten off to a good start. Because there are so many amazing residents, charities, businesses and experiences in town, we know we have only begun to scratch the surface. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of you in town who make this town so great; we look forward to many more years of highlighting the best of Fairfield!

In keeping with the theme of home, in this issue you will find articles on two local home design businesses, The Finish and Carta Creatives. We hope you will enjoy reading these articles and will find some inspiration to help you decorate your home.

It’s All in the Details The Finish is a unique design company that provides the services of a professional interior designer, one hour at a time. They offer that trained eye and expertise that comes with decades of experience but unlike traditional design services, The Finish welcomes smaller projects like styling a bookcase, accessorizing new furniture or choosing window treatments and artwork, as well as large full home design. As the names suggests, they finish your space. Since there are no budget minimums, this on-demand platform pairs clients with designers to resolve specific problems that refresh a room in an affordable, personal way. “Our end goal is to come up with real design solutions for our clients, within their means,” says Co-Founder and CEO, Stephanie Purzycki. “That means tackling storage solutions, adding a built-in, re-doing a layout for flow, customizing drapery, changing a paint color, finding a durable and beautiful rug.” They help clients choose the details that make all the difference to make their space polished and complete.

They work with clients from ideation to install.

The process starts with a comprehensive one-on-one consultation to understand the needs and the scope of the project. Next, a design proposal is implemented and the project is quoted and billed by the hour. For larger jobs, clients can phase out the project and decide what to tackle first.

For their most recent project in a Southport home, moodboards, floorplans and a reflected ceiling plan were at the start of the design process for their client’s empty space. Visuals and imagery are an important communication tool to give a sense of the overall aesthetic vision. An early challenge was incorporating a billiard table previously bought by the clients, into the formal living room. Once layout and direction was approved, they went through several rounds to lock in all the other elements including fabrics, furniture, art, and lighting. Inspiration came from the house’s beautiful location near the water by using a palette of soothing coastal blues and sandy neutral tones. Staying true to the house’s French Country architecture while seamlessly mixing in the client’s playful, boho style was executed cohesively.

“Great design is layered and an artful coordination of items can give the room that amazing wow factor,” advises Stephanie. They recently added a brick and mortar shop to the company’s offerings, a natural extension of their business, in charming Southport’s center. Featuring local, small-batch, family-owned and female founded businesses, The Finish shop is curated by Purzycki and her Co-Founder Kaitlin Madden. The store is filled with vintage goods, frames, glassware, books, furniture and accessories for every corner of the home. The store is a reflection of The Finish’s overall design philosophy, “Accessorizing is one the simplest and easiest ways you can update a space,” explains Stephanie. “It’s that final layer of accessories that will make a space feel personal, homey and lived in.”

Spotlight Interview WHAT MADE YOU SAY, “I WANT TO BE A DENTIST”?

I was always very good with my hands, very involved with electronics and even car repair and I’ve always been a critical thinker. I was a biology major in college. One day it hit me that dentistry was the perfect combination of all those skills, and so I applied to New York University College of Dentistry, they accepted me and so began the saga of my career.

WHERE DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER AND HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN FAIRFIELD? My career started right after I finished my general practice residency at Bellevue Hospital.

I was lucky enough to be hired into three private practices in different areas of New York; Manhattan, Tuckahoe, and Rockland County.

decide how I envisioned my future solo practice. The Rockland office was a home office, and this really became a model for the next step in my career. One day, my father-in-law (of Fairfield, CT) and I took a ride through southern Connecticut looking for places to possibly buy/set-up my own practice. We found an available practice in an existing home office in Weston, Connecticut. I practiced in that home for 4 years, until our young family outgrew the home, and the practice outgrew the office. We moved into a larger space in Westport where I spent 15 years, and finally settled in Fairfield for the past 17 years.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? We provide nearly all aspects of dentistry from hygiene, periodontics, endodontics, denture construction, implant restorations, full mouth reconstruction, fillings, cosmetic bonding, veneers and all aspects of crown, bridges, and restorative dentistry. We also offer whitening and Invisalign.

Perhaps of most importance, however, is the service that we provide to our patients who are suffering from dental emergencies. We will always make room in our schedule for any patient in distress, most always on the day that they call.

I was excited to do it all. The one procedure that I did stop doing early in my career was the surgical extraction of third molars (a.k.a. wisdom teeth).

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE YOU’VE WITNESSED WITHIN THE DENTAL WORLD SINCE YOU OPENED YOUR PRACTICE? The dental world has changed dramatically since I opened my practice, with the addition of digital dentistry. I got involved in scanning and digital dentistry almost 20 years ago. It was the computerization of all aspects of my profession, and it was amazing. It was becoming (and now is) a digital world. It’s digital x-rays, digital crowns, digital bridges, and digital record keeping. I can complete cases faster with higher precision than ever before, just with the push of a button.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED IN YOUR CAREER?

Covid! Having to close my practice for a couple of months was very hard for everyone. It was a challenge to maintain my staff during that time, while still finding ways to treat patients with emergent care needs, while keeping myself, my staff, and our patients safe. Fortunately, dentists were already well prepared for working within the parameters of an epidemic safely. Ever since the HIV outbreak in 1982, the profession created, and has been using “universal precautions”, which includes wearing masks and gloves for every patient. While Covid and HIV are very different viruses, the precautions being taken are very similar. We are very happy to educate any patient who is interested in how we implement what are now called “standard precautions” to keep our patients and staff as safe as possible while visiting our office.

My favorite moment from the past 40 years is a personal one that took place this past summer. It was the marriage of our youngest daughter. It was a fantastic, uplifting experience that brought our family tremendous happiness and joy. WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED OUT, WERE THERE PROCEDURES YOU WERE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT PERFORMING? During my postgraduate residency at Bellevue, I received some tremendous training in all aspects of general dentistry in the hospital program, including a fantastic background in medicine.

As a board member, and as the president of the Fairfield County Tennis League, it’s one heck of a distraction that has kept me sane in a crazy world (and at times) a crazy profession. Not to mention, kept my neck and back reasonably out of harm’s way.

Meet Fairfield resident and tastemaker, Elana Tenenbaum Cline, Founder and Creative Director of Carta Creatives. Carta Creatives is an interdisciplinary creative studio, with distinct design as the through line. The firm offers a unique mix of services all linked with a considered and deliberate vision. Elana explains, “For example, from a restaurant’s interior design and lighting selection, to the menu design, to the website design, to the playlist selection. We believe it’s all connected and that’s how we approach our projects.”

Rooted in architecture, Elana’s tenure in the industry encompasses a wide range of hospitality, retail and commercial projects at large agencies. Her roles evolved from design to strategy to project management to a combination of all three, before taking the leap and opening her own studio. She credits her team’s varied skillset, adaptability and effective collaboration as to what sets Carta Creatives apart from other ‘all-in-one’ shops. Juxtaposing structure with creativity has laid the groundwork for the firm’s practical creative approach.

Residential home design can be particularly overwhelming for clients. After an initial meeting to nail down style, understand lifestyle, budget and design goals, Elana and her team make it seamless and as fun as possible for each new client. “Our goal is function and form. Spaces should work and feel right, and we have the expertise to create that.” Instead of dictating design direction the team helps clients find their own aesthetic. They start each project learning as much as possible, not just about the space but also about how the client wants to use their space. “Everything informs how we can design the best possible space to meet functionality and beauty.”

subjective; my definition of modern sophistication could be totally different from a client’s. It’s important we show visuals early on to make sure we’re aligned. Anticipating next steps and keeping clients aware of what their role is in the process is important for managing expectations.”

One of Carta Creatives most recent residential clients was Elana herself so she knows first hand how daunting it can be. “Having just renovated our home and gone through the experience personally, it can be emotional and tiring.” When they purchased their Fairfield home Elana and her husband did not anticipate the level of renovation they would ultimately undergo. With a one year old and a baby on the way, the timeline was urgent.

Managing the jobsite while having to order goods during peak-covid supply chain issues made things even more challenging. Elana’s personal style is earthy with influences from global patterns. She draws inspiration from travels abroad and from her childhood home. Her love of muted shades like sages, warm ochres, beiges and bold tribal artwork are reflected throughout her house. She likes to use paint and light fixtures whenever she wants to add unexpected impact. Elana has curated a mix of old and new pieces that keeps things practical, functional and not too precious, that same cornerstone at the core of her design firm. “In our dining room, we knew it would be used less frequently than some of the higher traffic spaces, and wanted to dial up the drama by coating the space with a charcoal paint and furnishing with an antique piece, my parents original set from the 80’s.”

8 oz bucatini dry pasta 1 Tbs vegetable oil Kosher salt 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 4 oz unsalted butter 1 tsp cracked black pepper 1/2 cup of water (save some when cooking the pasta) 1 tsp salt 1 pinch of ground black pepper Parmesan cheese to garnish

directions: 1. Cook the dry pasta in boiling water; add salt and oil to the water to help prevent the pasta from sticking together while cooking.

Cook the pasta for about 7 to 8 minutes or al dente.

2. Place the pasta in a colander and drain, saving some of the pasta water to make the sauce, 1 or 2 cups. Do not rinse the pasta with water. Place to the side.

3. In a sauté pan, toast the salt and pepper for about 20 seconds, till the black pepper releases its aroma and gets lightly smoky. Add butter and swirl it around the pan till it melts, careful not to let it burn.

4. Next, add the water and pasta to the pan, keeping the pan moving to prevent the pasta from sticking. Reduce the liquid by half till there is a creamy consistency, turn off the heat.

5. Slowly add the grated Parmesan, folding it into the pasta. If the consistency it is still too thin, add more Parmesan.

6. Garnish with a pinch of black pepper and freshly shaved Parmesan to serve. ilpellicanofairfield.com

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh.

We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues.

Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while

others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
