When we moved to Fairfield County many years ago, we chose the area for its vibrant communities, full of arts, restaurants, outdoor activities and local shops which still maintained that small town feel. With Valentine’s day upon us, the February issue of Fairfield Lifestyle Magazine is dedicated to local love. And what could be more local to love than a community theater? What began as a vaudeville house in 1920 and was more recently a movie theater, the Sacred Heart University Community Theater has been lovingly restored and now hosts everything from musical performances, to films, live performances and speaker series. In this issue, you will also meet local businesswoman, Sara Holland of Sara Holland Sports. Sara uses her background as a division I athlete, college softball coach, and her education in motor learning and psychology to teach children the mental and physical skills needed to become lifelong athletes. As February is right in the middle of tax season, we asked local accountant Ryan Sheppard for some of his best tax tips. We are sure you will gain valuable information to help you prepare your taxes. Happy Valentine’s day Fairfield. We hope you take some time to spend with the family and friends you love. We hope you share our love for “local” and that you show your love by supporting the local community. B R U C E B E R N S T E I N & M I N DY K AT Z , P U B L I S H E R S @FAIRFIELDLIFEST YLEMAGA ZINE

EDUCATION AND ENTERTAINMENT MEET IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN FAIRFIELD, CT
M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE
The recently restored Sacred Heart University Community Theatre is a cornerstone of cultural enrichment for audiences of all ages in the heart of downtown Fairfield. It has quickly established itself as a choice destination for education and entertainment throughout Fairfield County. The theatre first opened as a vaudeville house in 1920 and became the center of entertainment in Fairfield—hence the former name of Fairfield Community Theatre. The 500-seat cinema and performance venue was later restored in 2019 and is now operated by Sacred Heart University. This world-class, fully reimagined and charming theatre offers something for everyone, including jazz, Broadway and Cabaret, live entertainment, blockbuster and classic film viewings, educational programming, thought leader series, Sacred Heart University musical concerts and private events. When an opportunity was presented to become the title Singer-Songwriter Series sponsor for the theatre, Victoria Fingelly, a lifetime Fairfield resident and well-established local real estate
agent, jumped at the chance to give back to the town of Fairfield and the arts community. Vicky has watched the theatre evolve since her childhood and provide countless opportunities for the community to embrace and enjoy the arts. Many of Vicky’s fondest memories include attending movie screenings and performances at the theatre with her father, Nicholas Fingelly, who established Nicholas Fingelly Real Estate in 1948. “Sponsoring the Sacred Heart University Community Theatre Singer-Song Writer Series is truly an honor. The theatre has always been at the very heart of the Fairfield arts community, and it is a privilege to support this special venue that has brought so much joy to me personally and to our town. The theatre is an iconic venue to visit, and live entertainment provides a wonderful platform for all to admire and appreciate the arts.” “I fondly recall enjoying innumerable movies at the theatre with friends. It was a big deal since we could attend shows without adult supervision by the age of 10,” Fingelly reflected. The resurgence of the theatre is a welcomed addition to downtown Fairfield. In addition to the newly renovated theatre, the area surrounding the theatre was also recently revitalized to include new restaurants, an updated outdoor seating area, and a flower and butterfly garden. Patrons of the theatre have the opportunity to make a special evening out by adding dinner to a visit to the theatre. Old Post Tavern, which is a classic American tavern located at the corner of Post Road and Unquowa Road, features an abundant outdoor seating area, Isla & Co., a new Australian-style restaurant, is conveniently located next door to the theatre. Il Pelicano, featuring Mediterranean fare, is another superb pre-theatre dining option just around the corner.

“The Sacred Heart Community Theatre is a great destination for a special evening out to enjoy highly acclaimed, world-famous singer and songwriter performances. The recent Joan Osborne performance was a personal favorite of mine. Although I was unable to attend, I heard the Judy Collins performance was fabulous. The setting was intimate and the acoustics were outstanding. This special venue attracts renowned talent and is not to be missed,” Fingelly concluded. Renovations to the theatre include a new and larger stage, a balcony with a VIP Lounge, a renovated front office, state-of-the-art digital technology and restorations to the original building structure. The interior now provides well-spaced rows, making the seating extremely comfortable. The exterior features a beautifully restored neon marquee, which showcases theatre events in bright lights.

Tax Tips! 10 LAST MINUTE TAX SAVING TIPS.

Its that time of year again, everyone’s favorite – Tax Season! Here are 10 last-minute tax-saving tips: 1. Get organized – Many taxpayers are surprised this would be on the list. The reality is thousands of dollars of tax deductions and/or credits get missed because of a lack of organization and record-keeping. No one likes to do accounting during the year (well, except maybe for me) but the truth is being organized and documenting what you dropped off at Goodwill or that medical expense from August could save you. 2. Perhaps your teenager has earned income over the summer from a part-time job. File a return for the child and contribute to a Roth IRA on their behalf up to the amount of their earned income. This way you can help start saving for their retirement with taxfree earnings and even use the money to pay for college. Not to mention, it’s a great way for your child to learn about taxes and investing. 3. By this time of year there are very few things a taxpayer can do to lower their income tax liability.
But two options are retirement accounts and health savings accounts. Talk to your CPA about which ones you may be eligible to contribute to. 4. Don’t forget about these possible credits related to children. There are additional child credits, adoption expense credits, dependent care credits, earned income credit, and an American opportunity credit. With so many credits see your CPA for which ones you may be eligible for. 5. Many taxpayers qualify for energy improvement credits and don’t realize it. Did you install new doors in the home last year, new windows, insulation, solar? If so, you may be qualified for additional credits. 6. Capture your charitable deductions! In order to qualify as a tax deduction you should maintain contemporaneous records to prove the donations. One often missed deduction is out-of-pocket charitable deductions. For instance driving for a qualified nonprofit, or out-of-pocket expenses for a nonprofit. CONTINUED >

“We have large firm resources with a small firm personal touch. We understand every business is different, and your tax and accounting solutions should be tailored as such.”
7. Are you self-employed and work out of the home? Don’t be concerned about taking the home office deduction. It is a common misconception that more returns are audited because of a home office. If you have no fixed location you can use the home office deduction for administration or management activities even if you don’t meet clients there. Consult your CPA for details. 8. Pay on time. Even if you have to file an extension pay your estimated tax liability by April 15th. Remember filing an extension is not an extension to pay your tax. Penalties and interest will accumulate. 9. If you have a larger-than-expected balance due - do not fret, you can set up an installment monthly payment plan and the interest rate is not terrible. Pay as much as you can by April 15th and you can set up an automatic payment for the balance due each month. I recommend paying your state balance first as their rates tend to be higher than Federal. 10. Don’t forget to pay your first quarter estimated tax payment for 2023 if required. If you are required, remit quarterly estimates for 2023. Your first payment is due April of 2023. Failure to remit can cause additional penalties.

How to be a Good Sport For Sara Holland, life is a sport. Playing Division 1 softball was followed by a career at the professional level and coaching at top universities. Sara started her business, Sara Holland Sports, 15 years ago and has leveled up sports programs and camps for children 19 months and older throughout Fairfield County. She specializes in small groups as well as 1-on-1 private instruction. Her focus is on building a strong gross motor skill foundation. Sara assesses and develops each athlete’s skills to set them up for future success. She has also spent time developing top athletes’ mental approach to sport.
Q: WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH UNIQUE? I 100% love what I do. I lived the life of an active and enthusiastic child who was able to focus and take those skills to play Division 1 collegiate sports. I teach the fundamentals of sports skills and the development of children’s self-confidence, in a safe learning environment that promotes enthusiasm and a passion to learn. My 4 Pillars: Dream, Desire, Develop, and Discipline; helps guide older athletes to reach their short and long-term goals.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS CHILDREN GAIN WHEN INVOLVED IN SPORTS? They gain confidence in their abilities and in their bodies. They learn to express themselves. Kids learn to fail and they learn to win. All of which can inevitably be applied to all aspects of their lives.
Q: HOW CAN PARENTS OF NON “SPORTY” KIDS ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION AND WHAT IS A GOOD FIRST SPORT/ACTIVITY? My belief is every child should learn to develop a love for movement. When we have control over our bodies, we learn to believe in ourselves.
Q: NOWADAYS, SPORTS CAN BECOME INCREASINGLY COMPETITIVE AS CHILDREN GET OLDER, WHAT IS YOUR ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR YOUNG ATHLETES? FOR PARENTS? Do not be afraid of competition. It exists in all areas of life. What I teach athletes 12 years and older is preparation. When we are prepared, we fear less. When we are doing all the necessary work and giving our best efforts, CONTINUED >

then at the end of the day athletes and parents should sleep fine. Taking action is the key ingredient.
Q: AS FAMILIES BEGIN TO MAKE SUMMER PLANS, DESCRIBE YOUR SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS. I run a public camp held at Staples High School for 2.5 - 6-year-old. In addition, I offer backyard private camps too. My staff & I introduce everything from learning to ride balance bikes to various sports such as baseball, soccer, LAX and more. Each week focuses on a fun theme, which connects the sports and activities for that week.

I believe in play-based learning. The camp allows plenty of room for creative individuality and varying abilities in a non-competitive environment.
Q: WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST REWARDING ABOUT WORKING WITH KIDS AND YOUNG ATHLETES? I love watching their persistence and effort pay off. I love watching them push through and overcome the mental and physical obstacles in place. I most love hearing the joy in their voices and seeing them shout “I did it!”

9 WAYS T O O R G A N I Z E A N D I N J E C T S T Y L E I N T O YO U R S PAC E
ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.
30
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY
A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY
ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR
02
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE
03
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
04
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
05
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

06
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
