Walking into Connecticut Image Guided Surgery you’ll immediately feel a friendly warmth, uncommon in most doctor’s offices. There’s no white coat syndrome in this stateof-the-art facility. It is this atmosphere that helps patients settle in for treatment of a variety of vascular conditions the team manages. The scope of advanced care includes dialysis management, treatment of varicose veins, uterine fibroids and much more. Their minimally invasive approach keeps the focus on a faster, less painful recovery in a well-rounded outpatient environment. Leading this highly trained team is Dr. Rajiv Sharma, MD an Interventional Radiologist and the Medical Director of Connecticut Image Guided Surgery. Dr. Sharma relocated to Fairfield with his wife and three young children by way of Florida to be closer to family and friends. When first meeting Dr. Sharma, one can instantly see where the office’s friendly warmth comes from.

But to be honest, most of my free time is spent taking our kids to their soccer practices and games. We have all become big soccer fans in the last few years! We have some of our dearest friends who live in town. It’s also nice to be close to the in-laws and close to my practice.

modalities used include fluoroscopy, MRI, CT, and ultrasound. We do this by making small incisions to gain access into arteries or veins and using needles and catheters (small tubes) to treat conditions inside the body. Medical images are used to guide our catheters through blood vessels, arteries, and organs. Connecticut Image Guided Surgery is a dynamic and diversified practice with two Interventional Radiologists, a Nurse Practitioner, and a dedicated team of nurses, radiology techs and clinical coordinators. Our primary focus is endovascular management and the treatment of peripheral arterial disease, end-stage renal disease, uterine fibroids and spider and varicose veins. We also have a cosmetic portion of our practice run by our Nurse Practitioner which includes Botox treatments.

THESE DAYS MOST PATIENTS ARE USED TO LONG WAIT TIMES FOR APPOINTMENTS AND RUSHED VISITS. YOU HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT APPROACH. Our patient experience makes us unique and attractive. We believe in same-day/next-day service for all our patients who need to be seen. We help with transportation if needed and provide a meal for all our patients after major procedures. You will always see the same friendly faces from our front desk staff to the physicians. We truly create a personalized experience for each and every one of our patients which is much different than the typical hospital setting.

WHAT SETS YOU & YOUR TEAM APART? There is a sense of family between our team, and I strongly believe that translates to how our patients feel about our office and us.

WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT DURING THEIR INITIAL VISIT? A thoughtful and thorough assessment of your concerns with Dr. Schultze or myself. Moreover, we strongly believe in a multi-disciplinary approach. After the visit, there is always direct communication between us and your referring doctor to relay findings and discuss the next steps. “The performances are so special. It’s important for ability-diverse people and their parents to participate and experience the physical and emotional benefits of dance” -AMELIA VALLILLO

Amelia Vallillo, a senior at Ludlow High School, has turned her fifteen-year personal passion for ballet into an incredible mission to bring the joy of dance to kids and adults with various challenges. A student of classical ballet since the age of three, Amelia first fell in love with dance at Connecticut Dance School, a not-for-profit 501©3 organization in Fairfield dedicated to dance education of the highest standard. “I have always danced ballet”, says Amelia. “It offers me a creative outlet and has developed my self-discipline. It’s also really fun.” Ballet has also provided a way for Amelia to support a cause that is as meaningful to her as dance itself. “My uncle has cerebral palsy and deals with mobility issues. He has really inspired me to do more through dance,” she says. For the past four years, Amelia has actively volunteered at her dance school, as part of the Dance 4 All Abilities program. This is an adaptive dance class at Connecticut Dance School for children facing various challenges. The classes provide fun, small-group instruction using creative movement principles with modified ballet techniques. Amelia’s volunteer efforts in the Dance 4 All Abilities program have even included

performances with these children. “The performances are so special. It’s important for ability-diverse people and their parents to participate and experience the physical and emotional benefits of dance,” she says. The program led Amelia to bring this access to dance even further, by starting an outreach program through various group homes and work programs. “So far, I have volunteered at Abilis and Sunset Shores to bring the impact of “Dance 4 All Abilities” to an even broader audience. I usually recruit some of my dance friends and we either perform ballet or teach a class, and the experience is always so rewarding.” Amelia is sharing her story to spread the word so that more people can take advantage of this opportunity. “At every performance or event, people are always so excited to watch and participate,” she says. “I want to help Connecticut Dance School create more awareness. I’ve been helping the Dance 4 All Abilities program expand through an outreach program with Special Education departments in neighboring towns so that more kids with varying challenges who are interested in dance, can participate”. Kat CAN Cook! Southport resident superstar, Kathleen Ashmore is a social media sensation with 2 million followers on Tik Tok. After a successful career in the food world that includes a life-changing dream job at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia; this trained chef and recipe developer made a pandemic pivot. While focusing on raising her 2 children but feeling unfulfilled, Kat turned to social media as a creative outlet in the summer of 2020. Combing her culinary expertise with this new platform to educate and inspire, an unexpected career was simmering. With a focus on healthy eating, Kathleen’s philosophy is that food should still be fun and exciting. She wants to change that diet culture mindset from what you’re taking away to instead, spotlighting what you’re adding to your plate. This was the impetus for her wildly popular Hungry Lady Salad series. She started to create big abundant salads changing what people think a salad should be. And it resonated. Her loyal followers continue to grow seeking her easy to make nutrient dense meals and advice. Kathleen’s number one tip is to stick to preparation. She recommends taking just 30 minutes a week to meal plan and making a grocery list to cover it. Then immediately wash, prep and store healthy snacks and produce so they are ready to go when you and your family are hungry. Kat Can Cook and she’s just getting started. Soon she will add author to the mix with her debut cookbook coming next year. For more delicious healthy recipes be sure to find @kat_can_cook on Instagram and @katcancook on Tik Tok.

A Healthy Mission ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOUIS SEIDLER

Truffle & Dr. Attar

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

After 6 years of advancing through the ranks in the Army, including a tour in Iraq, Captain Ryan Attar didn’t know his most important mission was around the corner. At the age of 26, while stationed in Germany, Ryan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. His commitment to service and a military career came to an unexpected end when he was told he would be insulin dependent for life. He had no choice but to medically retire from the Army. Following his doctor’s advice, Ryan tried to manage his new condition and maintain good health. However, he still saw erratic blood sugar levels. His doctors had little guidance or protocols to properly handle his diabetes. He began to research and thus started his new journey to wellness. When he started to mindfully include nutrition and exercise into his treatment, Ryan started to see improved results. “I knew I could help diabetics and others with persistent and lingering ailments because I knew they weren’t getting the care they deserved.” With his GI Bill, Captain Ryan Attar decided to go back to school to get a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine. Conventional medicine often aims to treat and suppress symptoms through prescription medications without ever finding the root cause of the issue or illness.

For diabetic patients, oral meds are the usual regimen. Traditionally, visits are short and rarely do physicians discuss the impact of diet and habits. Dr. Attar sees patients with various chronic conditions including hypertension, IBS, reflux, thyroid disease, fatigue and of course, diabetes. With all new patients, Dr. Attar takes the time to discuss nutrition and lifestyle. Along with lab work he can then assess health concerns and set goals for an effective treatment plan for healing. Aside from diet and exercise, sleep is often the most neglected. Poor sleep habits contribute to most diagnoses. Educating his patients is of utmost importance. “I find when my patients are educated they have the best long-term outcomes.” Some of his diabetic patients can even come off their medications and attain normal blood sugars. But Ryan urges, “It’s important to note that I’m not against pharmaceutical drugs or MD’s. I work and collaborate with a medical doctor in my office.” In many patients, medications are crucial and lifesaving. “My patients are getting a science-based approach that combines the best of holistic and conventional medicine.” To learn more about Dr. Ryan Attar and his practice visit drattar.com

M E E T T R U F F L E : Truffle is Ryan’s diabetes-alert dog. She is trained to detect changes in blood sugar which she can determine through breath. Truffle’s accuracy is oftentimes even faster than Ryan’s continuous glucose monitor, a device he wears that reads his levels throughout the day. Alert dogs not only offer companionship to diabetic patients, but they also provide potential life-saving support by exposing and preventing dangerous blood sugars.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 36
