We love the fall and winter holidays, but Thanksgiving is absolutely our favorite. It’s the holiday that we have had the pleasure of hosting for over 20 years. We’ve enjoyed gathering with our family year after year, watching the kids grow into adults and welcoming new family members. Of course, we love the tradition of cooking our family’s favorite recipes as well as trying new ones each year. We can’t wait to gather around the table again this month, tell stories and laugh. We also like to take the time to reflect on what we are grateful for: the love of our family, the bonds with our friends, and the joy of our careers. Our November issue is dedicated to stories about giving back to the community. We are in awe of the many Fairfield residents and organizations who dedicate themselves to making the lives of others better. We have had the privilege of introducing you to them in so many of the issues since this magazine’s inception and are excited to share more stories this month. We hope you will enjoy reading about more hometown heroes in the articles about Pink Aid and Wakeman Boys and Girls Club, as well as Teresa and Bill Feher of Garage Force, and their dedication to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We hope reading these stories will inspire you to give back as well. Happy Thanksgiving, Fairfield! Enjoy your gathering with your family and friends and as always take a moment to say thanks!

WESTPORT ORGANIZATION BRINGS ESSENTIAL HELP TO BREAST CANCER PATIENTS NATIONWIDE

Carmen Harrell is a woman who gets things done. Each year, whether she’s tired, feeling overextended or there’s a pandemic raging, she has her annual mammogram. So it was that she got a call on January 14, 2021, that the tiny mass in her left breast, no bigger than the head of a pin, was malignant. She had cancer. “I didn’t get scared,” says the Bridgeport mother of three, grandmother of five and great-grandmother of one. “I said, “Alright. Where do we go from here?’” The next few months were a whirlwind. Suddenly, she had an oncologist. She went through surgery and six weeks of radiation. “This is the way I am – for six weeks at 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, I was there,” she said. “I would get there at 7:30 and sit in the car and read or pray and then I would go in with a smile on my face.”

While Carmen was sure she’d survive cancer, tiny doubts started to creep into her thinking. Radiation left the 55-yearold beautician exhausted and unable to work as she normally did. She worried how her family, including a teenage daughter living at home, would be able to make ends meet on just her former husband’s paycheck. Enter Pink Aid, the Westport-based organization providing compassionate support and rapid emergency financial assistance to patients in treatment. With lightning speed they were on the case, ultimately providing Stop & Shop gift cards and other beneficial care and covering Carmen’s rent – twice. Having proven its abilities to help women locally for more than a decade, Pink Aid moved to a national stage in 2022 with its Pink Purse initiative, providing help of all kinds to women across America within 48 hours of receiving an application.

Launched in 30 states and counting, the program enlists nurse navigators to help assess a person’s needs and make sure she gets speedy meaningful assistance. While other organizations fund crucial cancer research, Pink Aid provides funds for treatment, recovery and wellness, diagnostic testing, outreach and education and essential household expenses. More than 20,000 breast cancer patients and their families have benefitted. “The expenses of cancer are just astronomical. While we don’t help with medical bills, we do help ease the financial burden with gas and food cards,” says Amy Gross, one of the group’s four co-founders along with Amy Katz, Andrew Mitchell-Namdar and Renée Mandis. More than 2,000 breast cancer patients have received more than $1.8 million in emergency aid since Pink Purse debuted

in 2015. The pandemic gave the team time to beef up its website and plan for the national campaign, which has meant more than 50 applications a month on top of the 30 it administers in Connecticut. "Through Pink Aid's Pink Purse and grant programs we have funded $8.4 million to breast cancer patients who are financially insecure", says Katz. “Now that our Pink Purse is national and in 30 states we are receiving recognition and interest from national sponsors too. “We went from granting funds to two organizations in 2011 to 47 today" Aside from two part-time employees, the effort is run entirely by volunteers. Purse-funded wigs and lymphedema sleeves that help them stay comfortable and confident. In addition Pink Aid provides the Warrior Connection, linking patients to peer mentors and hosting a “Celebration of Life” fashion show each year at Mitchell’s. The multi-pronged approach to compassion and care has not gone unnoticed among the group’s recipients. “Everything was hitting us at one time. Anything they could do, they did. And what they couldn’t do? They would know of someone else who could help.” says Carmen, who has made it a mission to help others now following in her footsteps. “I used to sit back sometimes and say, ‘Why me?’ Now I tell myself to stay happy, stay blessed and stay thankful. It could have gone another way.” PinkAid.org

CELEBRATING OVER A CENTURY OF WAKEMAN BOYS & GIRLS CLUB A NOSTALGIC LOOK BACK AND AN EXTRAORDINARY STEP FORWARD

The Southport Clubhouse circa 1960, 385 Center Street, Southport.

O UR TOWN | LOCAL SERVI CE S

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place to celebrate the opening of the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse on Fairfield Ave, Bridgeport in June 2011.

Very few things in life truly stand the test of time. We’re fortunate to have one of those time-honored organizations right here in our backyard. What started on Christmas Day in 1913 as a clubhouse for 50 boys in Southport has evolved into a flourishing organization known today as Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. Celebrating 109 years, Wakeman BGC now serves over 3,000 youth through its four vibrant sites in Fairfield and Bridgeport. With its illustrious history, the Club continues to offer girls and boys access to a wide range of academic, artistic, athletic, and community service activities with an admirable mission: “To guide and inspire young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens”. Wakeman BGC’s CEO, Sabrina Smeltz, reflects on how the Club puts the mission into action: “Over 10 years ago we expanded our reach from Fairfield into Bridgeport. As we bring on a 2nd location in Bridgeport, it is important to stay true to our roots, but also push boundaries to provide critical and impactful programs. The 100-year legacy is a testament to the support of the community, staff, and volunteers who have been stewards of our organization over the years.”

opened in Southport. It was their goal to establish a club that would "provide inducement to, and means for, the mental, moral, and physical improvements of the young people who come within its reach.”

1954: SOUTHPORT CLUBHOUSE OPENS ON CENTER STREET Under the leadership of Red Baker, Executive Director from 1945-1975, membership grew from 50 to 500 so a larger clubhouse was built on Center Street. Athletics was the primary pursuit for most early Wakeman members; it was a means to build character through sportsmanship. For parents and community leaders it became evident that WBGC’s activities were transformational, and its reputation spread as a positive place where young people could thrive and grow toward responsible adulthood beyond their family and school life.

1983: BOYS CLUB RENAMED WAKEMAN BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Although girls were always welcome at the Club, it was officially renamed to captivate the diverse interests of both its male and female membership. Program inventory also grew from athletics to education, character & leadership development, the arts, and health & lifetime skills.

1913: ORIGINAL BOYS CLUB OPENS ON HARBOR ROAD Thanks to a generous $40,000 endowment established by cousins, Frances and Cornelia Wakeman Crapo—in honor of their grandfather, Jesup Wakeman—Wakeman Boys Club

1989-2005: THE CLUB’S FOOTPRINT EXPANDS In the late 1980's, with Executive Director Dave Blagys at the helm, membership approached 750 boys and girls. A $1.2M capital campaign added a second gymnasium to complement the original gym, allowing for more in-house

and travel basketball teams and for kids to meet and mingle with others from all over town. In the early 2000’s, an additional $2.5M campaign raised funds to add extra program space, a sports court, and a turf field. Social boundaries previously defined by school and neighborhood continued to fade away.

2005: MCKINLEY SCHOOL-BASED SITE OPENS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FAIRFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS Wakeman BGC established an after-school program at McKinley School, offering enrichment programs on-site for the school’s diverse student body. Local high school students serve as mentors to McKinley students, assisting with homework and socialization. The success of the mentoring program prompted another at Holland Hill School in 2018, and in 2021, Wakeman BGC’s Great Futures Before & After School Program replaced the for-profit childcare service at McKinley. This program currently serves over 100 students, including free participation for 45 students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

2011: $7M CAMPAIGN CONSTRUCTS SMILOWBURROUGHS CLUBHOUSE In 1998, collaboration began with the Burroughs Community Center located in the West End of Bridgeport. This successful partnership led to a capital fundraising effort which culminated in the opening of the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse. This 23,000 square foot, Platinum Level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified facility has served more than 6,000 children in the Bridgeport community.

2020-2021 A TIME OF TRANSITIONS Sabrina Smeltz became the first female CEO of Wakeman BGC, taking over for David Blagys who was preparing to retire after 40 years of service to the Club. Immediately tasked with navigating the COVID-19 landscape, Smeltz, the Board of Trustees, and staff worked to reopen the clubhouses for summer camp in June 2020. During the 2020-21 school year, the clubhouses served as remote learning centers and

quickly brought back after-school programming. New tiered pricing was rolled out to families, allowing them to choose the fee they can best afford.

2022: GROUND IS BROKEN ON MADISON AVENUE CLUBHOUSE Several years ago, the City of Bridgeport approached WBGC about building a clubhouse at the site of the former North End Boys & Girls Club at 595 Madison Avenue, in one of the most socio-economically challenged areas in the state. This unique project will include partnerships with Southwest Community Health Center for medical, dental, vision and behavioral health services for families, and Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders for collaboration on programming. A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE…

2023: $24M MADISON AVENUE CLUBHOUSE IN BRIDGEPORT TO OPEN The new clubhouse will have the capacity to serve up to 2,000 children from nine nearby schools, providing a safe space with access to academic support and enrichment programs. The facility will include multiple learning centers, performing arts, tech, and STEM learning space, a field house, and a licensed preschool. IT TAKES A VILLAGE … Wakeman BGC’s success for over a century is a mindful endeavor and one that is accomplished by the remarkable generations of staff, directors, trustees, volunteers, and members whose insight, wisdom, and energy are invaluable. “Wakeman BGC owes much of our success to the foresight and conviction of our Board of Trustees and volunteers. Our board chair, Sean Sullivan, and Trustee and program volunteer, Eileen Blees, are examples of long-time Wakeman BGC volunteers who have put time and talent to help navigate challenges while staying fiscally responsible and serving our youth. We are forever grateful to our volunteers as we could not do what we do without them,” says Smeltz.

IN THEIR WORDS… We had the opportunity to check in with both Sean Sullivan and Eileen Blees on each of their inspirational Wakeman BGC experiences.

SEAN SULLIVAN

BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRMAN HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF WBGC AND IN WHAT CAPACITIES? My wife, Sheila, and I moved to Fairfield in 2001 and became involved as soon as our four young children began participating in various programs. We have been volunteers and committee members ever since; I joined the board in 2012, becoming the Chairman in 2019.

WHAT DREW YOU TO WBGC? The wonderful programs for children and young adults in a safe environment are so generously supported by parents and the community.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE AT WBGC? As Chairman, my role is to lead our Board and support CEO, Sabrina Smeltz, and the team primarily in setting the mission, strategy, and programs, as well as resource development (iI.e., fundraising).

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART? Sean & Sheila Sullivan at the first annual Hand in Hand Celebration recognizing the achievements of Club kids and community members from all Wakeman BGC sites.

The ability to have a positive and lasting impact on children and young adults in the Bridgeport and Fairfield communities. I am excited to see the manifestation of this through the Madison Avenue clubhouse!

WHAT DOES WBGC MEAN TO YOU ON A PERSONAL LEVEL?

“I am blessed to be able to play a role in furthering the mission of Wakeman and expanding the number of children served.”

Wakeman gives me the opportunity to give back to our communities. I am blessed to be able to play a role in furthering the mission of Wakeman and expanding the number of children served.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT WBGC? It’s the intangibles that really set this organization apart from others who offer childcare or sports programs. Each visit to the Club presents multiple opportunities to learn important values that can so often be overlooked in our fast-paced culture. Wakeman volunteers and staff always emphasize being respectful and honest and being a good friend and teammate. Additionally, it’s important to remember that Wakeman is a non-profit, and program accessibility is made possible by philanthropic support that funds 60% of our $3M operating budget.

HOW CAN SOMEONE GET INVOLVED AT WBGC? The organization relies on volunteers not only in the clubhouses for coaching or tutoring but also in an advisory capacity. We welcome a range of expertise to assist the Club with resource development and overseeing programs and facilities.

28

O UR TOWN | LOCAL SERVI CE S

EILEEN BLEES TRUSTEE

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF WBGC? 20 years! My involvement began as a parent. It quickly evolved from being on the sidelines to attending fundraising events, to joining the annual auction planning committee, to becoming a Wakeman Board member in 2009.

WHAT DREW YOU TO WBGC? As a lifelong Fairfield resident, I knew hundreds of families who had fantastic experiences at Wakeman. Twenty years ago, when I signed my 1st grader up for Start Smart, I knew he would be in a fun, safe environment. As he grew, so did his desire to be involved in more programs. Wakeman’s atmosphere gave him many opportunities to make friends, have fun, and be part of a team. It fostered a sense of confidence and helped him appreciate the importance of service.

WE HEAR YOU WEAR MANY HATS! CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE VARIOUS ROLES YOU PLAY? I consider myself fortunate to be able to help Wakeman in multiple capacities. Serving on the Board of Trustees for the past 13 years has enabled me to be a true ambassador. I help with marketing efforts, touting our successes to encourage people to support Wakeman through volunteering or donating. I also assist with program delivery, serve as a mentoring chaperone, and have run numerous STEM programs.

Eileen Blees at Holland Hill School Mentoring Program in 2022, serving as a chaperone and resource to the teen mentors.

WHAT DOES WBGC MEAN TO YOU? Wakeman is an organization that makes a big difference in kids’ lives, helping them build meaningful relationships with peers, staff, and volunteers. These relationships are vital in building confidence and helping them navigate today’s world. Kids need to know there are many people in their community who are there to support them. The energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm that the kids bring when they are at the Club is what keeps me volunteering.

WHAT’S ONE THING ABOUT WBGC THAT YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW?

“The energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm that the kids bring when they are at the Club is what keeps me volunteering.”

I wish folks knew how many programs and activities go on every day at all the Wakeman sites and how many kids are positively affected! There are kids doing great things from just being a good friend, to trying their best or helping others throughout our communities.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR SOMEONE TO GET INVOLVED AT WBGC? Visit the “Get Involved” tab at wakemanclub.org or call the clubhouses at 203-259-4805 (Southport or McKinley School program); 203-908-3378 (Smilow-Burroughs).

When Bill Feher met his wife, Teresa, as Fairfield University students in 1986, little did they know that 36 years later they would be raising 4 children in Fairfield County, become very involved members of the community, and own a successful and growing franchise business. As the proud owners of Garage Force of Southwestern CT, a premium installer of polyaspartic polyurea concrete floor coatings, Bill and Teresa are dedicated to helping homeowners and businesses transform their drab, damaged or stained floors into the beautiful floor they’ve always wanted. Their coating systems provide a durable finished floor that is both easy to maintain and adds value to any home or business. The Fehers are also both extremely passionate about an organization near and dear to their hearts: Make-A-Wish of CT. Bill played an important role in purchasing and renovating the beautiful new multi-million-dollar donor-funded Wish Building in Trumbull. “We are extremely grateful to the Fehers for their support of Make-A-Wish Connecticut,” says Pam Keough, CEO Make-A-Wish Connecticut. “Their commitment and time were invaluable in helping us create a positive, creative, and healing environment for our wish kids and alumni”. We sat down with this entrepreneurial and philanthropic couple to learn more about their passions—both professional and personal.

I was very active in the new building search to replace the small office that couldn’t comfortably accommodate the team, or the wish families. As the vision for the new space became more clear, I accepted the role of Building Committee chair and helped lead the way with financial and construction advice.

Do the right thing and the rest will take care of itself; your customers will appreciate if you go the extra mile.

OBVIOUSLY HELPING PEOPLE IS IN YOUR DNA. WITH SO MANY WONDERFUL CHARITIES IN NEED OF SUPPORT, HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN MAKE-A-WISH? I was asked by a friend to volunteer on the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors about 10 years ago. Teresa and I wanted to find a charity that could utilize our professional talents and support our desire to provide help to those in need. After getting to know the team and meeting the wonderful wish families we wanted to do even more to help.

Being there during a critical and stressful transition time for the organization. We had just purchased the new building and had begun fundraising when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. We were able to withstand the financial strains and delays in wish granting and came out the other side even stronger and more resilient as an organization. To be a part of a board that is fully engaged and committed to the mission is truly amazing.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED WITH MAKE-A-WISH? We are always looking for people who want to get involved as a donor or volunteer. Visit wish.org/ct or call 203- 261-9044 to help grant the wish of a child today. For more information on Garage Force: southwesternct.garageforce.com

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.

For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . FRESH ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & HARDWOOD SMOKED BACON Yield: 6 servings 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved 1-2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish - 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped

The Recipes

• • • • •

CRANBERRY ORANGE ZEST SAUCE Yields 4 cups

METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!

CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.

• • • • • • • • • •

3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened 1 piece orange peel 1 each orange for zesting ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced 3 each cinnamon stick ¼ teaspoon clove, ground ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground ½ cup sugar Pinch salt

METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. In medium saucepot on high heat, add everything except orange peel and orange zest. Bring ingredients to boil, then reduce to a simmer with lid. 2. While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens. 3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed. 4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat. 5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture. 6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste. 7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight. 8. Enjoy!

CHEF NOTES:

Bon appetit! Chef Kyle Williams, Savor & Swirl

• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds. • Do not use ground cinnamon. • Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender. • Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly. CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / FA I R F I E L D

Wine Pairing

According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

ABOUT SAVOR & SWIRL Chef Kyle Williams has over 22 years of experience in the elite culinary industry, including 2 Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy, resorts in Hawaii, and alongside prestigious NYC celebrity chefs Todd English, David Burke, and Daniel Boulud. Savor & Swirl has recently expanded to include nationwide mobile catering. Book online, and they will bring their expertise to you, including customizable, in-home dinner parties or luncheons for holidays, events, business gatherings and surprise pop-ups. “We love to gather with people who value breaking bread together around a table with the special people in their lives.” savorandswirl.com Instagram: @savorandswirl, #savorandswirl

AT HOM E S PA ARTICLE LEANN PARKER

As a business owner of both Silvertooth Home and Mobile Music Teachers, I am the first to raise my hand at struggling to take time for self-care. Because I love my work so much, I often forget the necessary balance of stepping away from it. My husband has been known to pop into my office to ask how many hours it has been since I’ve been sitting and that maybe I should at least get a glass of water. Hold on, going to do that now.... Clearly, self-care is not natural for me, and that isn’t something to be proud of. I have learned the hard way that self-care is not selfish but critical for a healthy and thriving life. The older I get, the more that I know and believe that putting my best foot forward means taking a step back from productivity for rest. True growth is slow growth.

44

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

Since I am one to struggle in the area of self-care, I find it helpful to include rest on my calendar to ensure it happens. My practiced rhythm of rest is taking one hour per day, one day per week and one week per year that is set aside for “nothing” (as in, nothing that I would label productive). When I started practicing this time of rest I was left with feelings of guilt and panic. These are the sure tell signs of a workaholic in detox mode, let me tell you. But practice makes perfect, and I’m happy to say that rest is getting easier for me, and if you struggle with rest as well then I know that it will get easier for you, too. I hope that you join me as we practice the art of self-care by trying these wonderful DIY recipes for putting together an at-home spa to relax and enjoy. Recipes that include Young Living Oils are gifted to us by my gal-pal and oils expert, Theresa Jones. Follow her over @theresamjones1 to watch her highlights as she demonstrates how to assemble and use these recipes. I had the honor of photographing this beautiful space in the home of the talented Suzanne Dahlmer who designed and built this space for her family. You can find her @indigostyleanddesign for inspiration.

GIFT-GIVING Along with enjoying these DIY treatments yourself, you can also assemble them as gifts for friends! All of these self-care recipes can be made into beautiful gifts for your friends and family to be celebrated and loved. Simply assemble the recipes as directed and place them in wide mouth mason jars with bamboo lids. Include a wooden spoon or scoop, instructions on how to use it and attach with ribbon or twine. And don’t forget that Mother’s Day is on May 9 (hint, hint!).

Lemon Sugar Scrub INGREDIENTS • 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup avocado or fractionated coconut oil • 20 drops of Lemon essential oil • Juice from one lemon

DIRECTIONS Mix the ingredients in a bowl adding more or less oil until desired consistency is achieved. Store in a glass jar with a lid and use within a few days. To use, gently rub over skin. Rinse with warm water and dry with a towel. Your skin will be left silky smooth! You can place the scrub by the sink to be used on hands after washing or left in the shower to be used as a body scrub (just do not use on face). CONTINUED > NOVEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Detox Foot Soak

Lavender Salt Bath

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

• • • • •

• 1 cup epsom salts • 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers (optional) • 20 drops of Lavender oil

1/4 cup epsom salts 2 tablespoons baking soda 2 tablespoons salt Rose Petals (optional) 5 drops of essential oil of your choice

DIRECTIONS

DIRECTIONS Mix salts, baking soda and oil combination of your choice. Fill a foot basin large bowl with warm water and add your mix to the water. Gently stir to dissolve ingredients. Sprinkle rose petals on top of water. Soak your feet for 15 minutes or until the water has cooled. This recipe is for a single foot soak, but I like to make larger batches (2 cups epsom salts, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup salt) to keep it on the counter until ready to use. If you’re making a large batch for later, just make sure to exclude the oils and dried flowers until you’re ready to use the soak.

Combine salt and flowers. When ready to use, add the mix to a full tub of bath water. Lastly, add the oil to your bath before enjoying it. This recipe is for a single bath, but I like to make a larger batch (4 cups epsom salt, 1 cup dried lavender f lowers) to keep it on the counter until ready to use. If you’re making a large batch for later, just make sure to exclude the oils until you’re ready to use. *Warning that if using dried f lowers it will take extra time to clean the bath after wards. Before draining the bathwater, use a skimmer to remove the f lowers and if needed rinse your body in the shower.

Honey Lip Rub INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 tablespoon coconut oil • 1/2 teaspoon local honey

DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients. For dryer texture add more brown sugar as needed. Gently rub onto lips and rinse with cool water. Use once per week. Keep unused rub in the fridge with a lid.
