The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. A Christmas recital turned benefit concert is being held on December 14, 2023 at 6:30 PM in support of 15-year-old Allison Lillie, who was injured in a car accident in August. Amy Phillips, Allison’s piano teacher, will be hosting the event at the Hardin Auditorium and 100% of the money raised will go towards Allison's medical bills. Tickets are available on Eventbrite. Recently The Oaks School took a field trip to Hillcrest Farms - Georgia’s first Robotic Dairy! The students got to tour the facility, see how cows are milked robotically, and how the farm used resources to make it sustainable. They also learned how to milk a cow and what products are made from cow’s milk. The Oaks School had a great time and can’t wait for their next field trip!

Making each day a little sweeter

While deployed with the Army in Afghanistan, Mark Parker began exploring career options for after his military retirement. “He said, ‘I think I want to be a Chick-fil-A operator,’” shares Mark’s wife Michelle. “We went through the highly competitive process for over a year and through that, we met the former owners of Belair Donuts and Coffee Corner. In 2019, we bought a donut shop!” The couple has been serving up sweet and savory treats at both locations, in Augusta and Grovetown, ever since.

The delightful menu is full of items made fresh daily. It includes a variety of cake and yeast doughnut options, with seasonal flavors making short-term appearances, and their signature crème brulée donut, which has a homemade crème brulée filling and is topped with caramelized sugar. Other sweet treats offered include crodo, which is a glazed croissant, and apple fritters. On the savory side, customers enjoy seven types of water-boiled bagels and kolaches made of a sausage

wrapped in a Danish dough, which come in three flavors - spicy, cheese, and plain. This fall, the Parkers worked with artist Cole Phail, owner of Master Productions, to create a mural for the side of their Augusta location. “Cole was able to take our words and ideas and make them come to life,” shares Michelle. “It was awesome working with him. to love coloring books when I was a little girl, so Cole spent many hours creating the mural on the computer first. Then he sketched the entire mural in charcoal and he let me paint the less complicated areas. It was really a fun process.” The mural is full of hidden treasures for patrons to discover. “Our goal was to debut our new logo designed by Amy D. Kilpatrick, owner of Design Worxs and create a fun experience for our community in our drive-thru,” explains Mark. “We wanted to include some of our Army life experiences in the mural and Cole was able to make our ideas come to fruition with the additional accents from our favorite duty stations of Hawaii, Korea, and Germany. We also tried to represent some of our frequent customers and signature products in the mural.” The last four years have been a fun adventure and Michelle’s favorite part… creating sweet experiences.

“I love having the opportunity to make our customers’ day sweeter,” she says. “I love the look on a child’s face when they get a donut with rainbow sprinkles and I also love when an adult grabs their hot cup of coffee, catches a whiff of it, and a smile spreads across their face.” Belair Donuts and Coffee Corner is a locally and veteran owned small business with two locations. The Augusta shop, located at 4045 Jimmie Dyess Pkwy Suite 106 (706-364-6522), is open Monday-Saturday 5am-1pm, Sunday 6am-1pm. The Grovetown shop, located at 720 E Robinson Ave (706-869-5091), is open Monday-Friday 5:30am-1pm, Saturday & Sunday 6am-1pm. Christmas Memories Merry Christmas! Christmas is a time when we can spend meaningful hours and days with family and friends as we resurrect older family traditions and memories while we create new ones for the future. In my home, our family, both near and far, gather together to watch our favorite Christmas movies as we build collapsing gingerbread houses and bake tons of Christmas treats! Festivities continue on from first light until the day comes to an end. Here are three local families who’ve also decided to share their precious Christmas memories and traditions with us!

HEAR FROM THREE LOCAL FAMILIES AS THEY SHARE THEIR FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MEMORIES AND TRADITIONS

Senator Lee and Donna Anderson Every year on Christmas Eve, our family would gather, and this always included Lee’s mom and dad! Even after Lee’s mom passed away, Lee’s dad came over for every Christmas, and every year he would tell the kids the story of Christmas by heart, scripture by scripture. Everyone would hang on his every word, and you could hear a pin drop. It would end with the most wonderful prayer and the kids would dress as the three wise men. That was the heart of our Christmases. He passed away in 2009 but continued that up until 2008. It was just so special to us!

Jason and Miranda Ross Since we have no family that lives in Augusta, we’ve always spent Christmas traveling to spend time with family. However, last year, we stayed home and celebrated Christmas, so the kids were able to see what Santa brought to THEIR house. The children excitedly played, and I didn’t have to worry about packing up presents to get them back to our house. On top of that, since the temperature was below freezing, I was also able to turn on a sprinkler and create a sheet of ice for the kids to play on. It was truly a wonderful Christmas!

Rushton and Mandy Metzler One of our Christmas traditions was passed down from my mother. On Christmas Eve, we read our children the story of Jesus’s birth all while cozied up in our pajamas in candlelight with our favorite snacks. The kids always participate! When Mary and Joseph plead with the innkeeper, the kids shout, “no room in the inn!” The room fills with barn animal noises and flashing lights, as angels bring the good news to Shepherds. The kids then pick one present to open early, representing gifts the wise men brought to baby Jesus. It’s everyone’s favorite part! The evening usually ends with singing by the piano and sharing why we are thankful for Jesus birth. It’s a way for us to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Reindeer Chow

ingredients: • • • • • •

6-7 Cups Chex Cereal 1 Cup Chocolate Chips 1 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter 1-2 Cups Powdered Sugar Red and Green Chocolate Candies Mini Peanut Butter Cups

directions: 1. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and peanut butter stirring every 30 seconds until fully melted and well combined. 2. Pour the Chex Cereal and chocolate peanut butter mixture in a large bowl. Gently fold together until all the cereal is well coated, adding more cereal if needed. 3. Pour 1 Cup of powdered sugar into a large bag and add the cereal mixture. Seal and shake well, adding more powdered sugar as needed. (This is a fun and mess-free step that little kids can do!) 4. Place the bag in the fridge for 30 minutes to allow the chocolate to set. When ready to serve, transfer the mixture to another container and add the chocolate candies and peanut butter cups.

Mini Pretzels Rolos Candy Eyes Red and Brown Chocolate Candies

directions: 1. To create the reindeer antlers, take some pretzels and break them in half (some will break incorrectly, these are great to snack on while working!). Once you have all the antlers you will need, preheat the oven to 250 degrees. 2. Take a pan lined with parchment paper and place down whole pretzels and put a Rolo in the middle of each pretzel. Bake in the oven for about 2 minutes, the goal is for the chocolate to become soft, not melted. 3. Remove from the oven and quickly push in the pretzel antlers to the Rolo and then place the chocolate candy for the nose and then the eyes.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. E VA NS TOWNE C E NT E R PA RK It’s Christmas in Columbia County! There will be a day full of holiday fun at the Evans Towne Center Park on December 3rd. At 1:00pm the Holiday Market begins, the Christmas Parade starts at 3:00pm, from 1:30pm to 5:00pm there will be pictures with Santa, live music from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, and approximately 6:15pm is the Tree Lighting Ceremony followed by fireworks.
