Circumstances in life often take unexpected twists and turns, and when that happens, it is vital to have someone who provides guidance through the rough patches, asks the questions that need asking, and finds solutions to problems. Attorney Kurt Lawton of Lawton Law Office draws on his experience overcoming adversity, specifically living with cerebral palsy, to help his clients navigate difficult circumstances in their lives. “Helping people through difficult problems is fulfilling. If somebody is coming to see a lawyer, it’s usually not a good time in their life,” explains Kurt. “I help them problem solve to the point where we can figure out how they can best navigate their future and move forward.” “Growing up with a disability has had its ups and downs,” he adds. “It has been difficult at times, but I use that overcoming and problem-solving mentality when I help people.” Kurt’s practice encompasses family law including divorces, visitation and custody modifications, adult guardianships and conservatorships, and probate matters such as wills and power of attorney. He also handles auto accident, personal injury, and other miscellaneous cases. Each situation is unique and includes a complex set of circumstances, so Kurt begins client partnerships with a consultation to ensure that all aspects of the situation are covered appropriately. “We sit down and have a conversation and I find out what I need to know… the nuts and bolts of who the people are and what the problem is,” explains Kurt. “I ask questions that have real life consequences, and the answers to my questions determine which door opens next and which route we take.”

“I have a lot of clients who have adult children with intellectual disabilities, and I help them get guardianship over their adult child,” shares Kurt. “Many people don’t realize that once the child turns eighteen, the parents or guardians need paperwork to communicate with doctors and the Social Security Administration. They can’t just continue to take care of them like they have all of their lives.” The same is true when it comes to adult children caring for aging parents who are facing mental and physical health challenges. “When a parent didn’t sign a power of attorney and now they have dementia or their memory starts to go and they need help, then the children have to go to probate court to get guardianship of a parent,” says Kurt. “It’s better to plan and get out in front of it rather than having to do all the scrambling when something happens and you need it.” As a Christian and an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, Kurt’s faith guides his interactions with clients and no matter the circumstance, he strives to navigate the details with kindness and sensitivity. “Many people have preconceived notions about lawyers, but I’m very compassionate, I listen to my clients, and I work hard to help them,” shares Kurt. “I enjoy listening to people, helping people, and trying to figure out how I can meet them where they are and help them realize that it is going to be okay… that we’ll get them through it.” Lawton Law Office is located at 4070 Columbia Road, Suite 140 in Martinez. DAVID “BUBBA” KECK WHIPS UP SWEET TREATS SURE TO SATISFY THE LARGEST CRAVINGS “I started making fudge with my mother when I was a teenager,” shares David “Bubba” Keck. “My mother passed away when I was eighteen and to honor her, as her legacy, I’ve been making fudge ever since.” Bubba has been cooking up these sweet treats for over fifty years, selling it on and off for over twenty years, and in December of 2019, he opened Bubba’s Fudge and Nuts, LLC. “I use quality ingredients and make everything as fresh as I can to extend shelf life, and because I cook every batch personally, the buck stops with Bubba.” Although classic chocolate fudge remains a most popular staple in Bubba’s collection, over the years, he has developed approximately sixty different flavors of fudge. “I love to create new fudge flavors, trying to make them taste just like those familiar treats,” says Bubba. “We just created Caramel Apple that people say tastes identical to the treat they get at the fair and carnivals.”

At any one time, Bubba’s Fudge and Nuts offer ten regular fudge flavors with additional seasonal flavors rotating on and off the menu. While it is difficult for him to choose one flavor over another, when pressured Bubba admits that his personal favorite flavor currently is the new Caramel Apple but his all-time favorite from his creations is the Orange Cream (tastes like Creamsicle). For those looking to mix a little salty with the sweet, Bubba also makes Pecan Brittle and Rachel’s Razzmatazz, a deluxe trail mix featuring praline pecans which is named after his daughter, Rachel, who helps with the graphic design aspect of the business. One thing Bubba loves about running a small business is his ability to give back to the community. “We donate a minimum of 10% of every dollar made to the organizations we support. God blesses us and we, in turn, get to bless others,” shares Bubba. “I’m able to utilize the business to help support various organizations, non-profits and causes to

help others and to be a blessing.” Specifically, Bubba partners locally with Project Life, a clothing and food bank where he volunteers once a week, and Cooper Ridge Farm, a therapeutic farm that serves local kids and young adults with special needs. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character.
