Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

In 2016, while talking over lunch, Southeastern Development Associates Executive Vice President Matt Mills and Kelly Gates formulated the idea of creating a new real estate company. Three weeks later, Southeastern Residential opened with Kelly at the helm. Since then, this sister company to Southeastern Development Associates has grown from five to forty realtors and is the driving force behind six leading new home developments in the CSRA. Current communities under the Southeastern Residential banner include Wrights Farm, Highland Lakes, River Island, River North, River Oaks, and Governor’s Place; with several additional new communities planned to debut in the next year. Drawing on her twenty-two years of real estate experience, Kelly’s role at Southeastern Residential as vice president and managing broker encompasses many responsibilities, including recruiting, training, and mentoring agents while creating an environment of working together as a team. “One thing that separates Southeastern Residential from other companies is the team-oriented culture Kelly has created,” explains Katlyn Gates, the company’s marketing director and Kelly’s daughter. “She runs all dayto-day practices, and she encourages a TEAM approach - meaning ‘together each achieves more’. Yes, each agent here is independent, but our culture is that we work together and we want all our agents to go that extra mile for their clients.” In addition to working with the company’s agents, Kelly works closely to develop new home communities. “I'm very passionate about new homes and new home developments. I am fascinated with finding a piece of land and having a vision of what this piece of land could be,” shares Kelly. “When you have a piece of property, at first you have dirt. You start by picking out the house plans that go on that dirt,

then choosing the exterior architecture of that house based on what the house needs to look like per subdivision. For example, the concept for Wrights Farm is farm to table, so our homes are architecturally designed as farm-style homes. That's the unique part of the process that I love - having a vision of what we can make this subdivision be like and offer it to the public.” Kelly also feels that she works with the best in the industry. “I love working with my builders and I can't speak highly enough about our real estate agents that we have here at our company,” says Kelly. “We're a small boutique real estate company, but we've got the top agents in our marketplace. Our goal is always excellent service.” Two special members of the Southeastern Residential team are Kelly’s daughters Katlyn (marketing director) and Alleigh (real estate agent). “Working at Southeastern with our mom, day in and day out, is one of the best things we have ever done,” shares Katlyn. “Mom has always inspired us, guided us to do the right thing while supporting us in our decisions, and most importantly, she has always told us to believe in ourselves. Nobody works harder than our mom, and still to this day she works hard and strives to accomplish everything she has dreamed of. We are so incredibly blessed to have her as our inspiration and our mom.” Kelly serves on the Georgia Real Estate Commission, the Greater Augusta Board of Realtors, is State Director for the Georgia Board of Realtors, and was Realtor of the Year for the Greater Augusta Association of Realtors in 2020. Kelly also enjoys riding horses and participating in cutting horse competitions, such as the Augusta Futurity. Making Magical Memories SOUTHEASTERN EXPOSURE BRINGS FUN AND EXCITEMENT TO PARTIES

Meet Gertie, a 1974 Winnebago camper that has been remodeled and turned into a photo booth. Leigh Zurek, the one who brought Gertie to life, lives in the CSRA with her husband and two daughters. Southeastern Exposure is a unique photo booth that can be rented for events such as weddings, birthday parties, grand openings for businesses, and much more. Leigh was inspired to bring Gertie to the CSRA after noticing there was nothing like that already here. “In California, we were at an event that had a camper photo booth and I thought ‘gosh, this is so cute!’ When we moved here in 2018, I wanted to have a photo booth camper at my birthday party. We couldn’t find one, so I told my husband that we should get a camper, renovate it, and turn it into a photo booth,” says Leigh. Inside the camper is where the magic happens. Renters can customize the decorations and colors, and props are provided. “You can choose from several different backdrops like greenery and flowers,” says Leigh. The borders on the photo prints can be customized to match the color scheme for your wedding or party, include the date with a small message, and can be sent to your phone digitally. For weddings, they offer flash drives with all the photos taken and a guest book for people to leave photos and a message.

“With any event, like birthdays and grand openings for a business, it’s always something people are thrilled about. They rented the camper for a reason and just to see that excitement, brings excitement. I like to see that I’ve made someone else happy,” she shares. While Southeastern Exposure can come to any event, Leigh tells us that weddings are extra special to her. “I really love weddings! I remember getting married and the joy I felt. Being able to see that through the eyes of someone else is fun; it’s really special and a great way to have memories. It’s one thing when you hire a wedding photographer and you’ve got pictures from the night, but this is a different side of the people, the guests, and of the bride and groom. When you’re sitting in a photo booth and you’ve got your props, it’s fun and energetic,” says Leigh. In a world full of technology, one can’t help but wonder how we got along before computers and the internet. It’s become the norm for everyone to have smartphones in their pockets and be able to search for anything and have the answer less than a second later. Do you remember when computers were first introduced to schools? The idea that a computer could teach your child seemed impossible at the time. Now, one can get a degree without ever leaving the comfort of their home. We talked with Marcia Bailey, an algebra teacher who helped create one of the first online algebra courses for schools.

Marcia lives in the CSRA with her husband and has taught mathematics for a total of twenty-eight years. “I taught three years in Richmond County, two years in Lumpkin County, twenty-two years in Columbia County, and retired in 2004,” says Marcia. In the late 1980s, the National Science Center approached Marcia with the idea of a computer-based, self-paced algebra 1 course called Learning Logic. “The National Science Center contacted me and asked if I would like to work on this program. I got to write some of the lessons and proofread some of the lessons that were already developed,” says Marcia. The schools in CONTINUED >

Columbia County were the pilot schools for the Learning Logic program. “Our first year in Columbia County with Learning Logic was 1990,” says Marcia. She tells us what a typical day in her classroom with Learning Logic looked like; “Kids would come in, sit down at their desk, and login to the program. It kept up with where every student was at in the course so they would pick up where they left off. If they had finished a lesson the day before, then they had homework. It was randomly generated so that every homework assignment was different and students couldn’t copy each other.” “The mathematically gifted would work fast, and then there were those who worked a little bit slower and were not as far along. We had a lot of leeway for them,” explains Marcia. “I would have labs after school, if they were behind and they wanted to, they could stay at school for an extra class session. I was also allowed to have classes on Saturdays a few times for those that were behind. We would let them come during post-planning, which is at the end of the school year. They could come and work all day for about three days, and some of them actually finished their course in those three days.” “I thought it was an excellent program! We previously had quite a large percentage of students who did not succeed in algebra 1. I thought that students working at their own pace and having a teacher that came around and helped them individually whenever they needed it would help more students succeed, and it did,” says Marcia. Marcia now teaches algebra and pre-algebra part-time at Logos Classical Academy in Evans. “I love the Christian atmosphere at Logos Classical Academy and that I’m able to pray with my students. I have a small class and they are all so polite and well behaved,” says Marcia. Logos Classical Academy is the first classical

Christian academy in the greater Augusta area and meets at First Baptist Church of Evans. They are a K - 10th grade classical Christian academy that seeks to train students to think well, love rightly, and live wisely for the glory of God and the good of others. Marcia has always had a love for mathematics and teaching her students. In her spare time, she enjoys visiting with friends and teaching Bible classes at Kiokee Baptist Church. With Marcia’s help, countless students have succeeded in their algebra classes. Thank you, Marcia, for your continued dedication to your students!
