Happy Valentine’s Day, Evans! Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Our homes serve as a sanctuary – a place where we retreat after a long day of work or a busy travel schedule. It’s a gathering place for family and friends, our favorite people with whom we enjoy spending time and making memories. Occasionally, uninvited guests show up and put a damper on those special times. These uninvited guests aren’t long-lost relatives; they’re pests that come in all sorts of forms including roaches, ants, spiders, mice, and termites. To keep these unwanted guests at bay, look to Brier Creek Services for preventative measures and to rid the home of these pests. “If you don’t want it in your home, we try to keep it out,” says Rob Hebbard, owner of Brier Creek Services, a pest control company that services homes and businesses in the CSRA. With over twenty years of experience in the field of pest control, Rob finds satisfaction in being able to solve pest issues for clients. “Whatever it is becomes a challenge to take care of,” he explains. “I like the troubleshooting aspect of my job…. coming up with a plan and doing it. Allowing Brier Creek Services to take care of pests frees up clients to enjoy other aspects of life. “I feel like people have better things to do, such as playing with their kids, than trying to spray for bugs themselves,” says Rob. “So, our tagline is ‘we kill bugs because you have better things to do.’” The first step in identifying problem areas consists of a phone or onsite consultation. After assessing the situation, Rob sets up a recommended treatment plan that best fits the needs and circumstances of the client. Service plans range from a set number of treatments to ongoing services that occur on a regular schedule. Although they do offer inside treatments, Rob explains that it isn’t always necessary. “Ninety percent of pest problems can be handled from the outside,” he says. “Most roaches, ants, and spiders come from outside and if you can kill them out there, they never get in the house. Also, if you have little kids in the house, by treating outside, you reduce the risk that they could get into something. Because once the treatment outside is dry, it’s good.” When a situation arises and clients need additional services outside of Rob’s area of focus, he is able to provide contacts for those services as well. “Having been in the

business so long, I have a good network of people that I can refer clients to if they have need of repairs for termite damage or issues outside of our scope,” shares Rob. As a company that strives to foster trusting relationship with clients, Brier Creek Services wants customers to be satisfied with their service and stay with the company because it meets their needs, not just because they signed a contract. “Everybody has to have an agreement, but they’re very open and it ends when you decided to end it,” says Rob. “We don’t have any cancellation fees because we’re not going to make somebody continue to be our customer.” Brier Creek Services also conducts termite inspections, provides termite letters for real estate closing, treats bedbugs, and assists with moisture control by installing vapor and moisture barriers. Attorney Bobby Christine has worn many hats during his career, including serving as an assistant district attorney in Augusta, an Army reservist, as magistrate judge in Columbia County and as the United States Attorney for both the Southern District and the Northern District of Georgia. Currently, Bobby serves as the first district attorney for the newly created Columbia County judicial district in a community he has called home for nearly thirty years and in which he and his wife, Sheri, have raised their three children.

“In my career, I’ve been blessed to work with law enforcement at every level and there’s nothing as gratifying as doing it right here in my own community on behalf of the citizens of Columbia County,” shares Bobby. “I love the vibrance of the community and I love the school system. We have a strong quality of life and economy in Columbia County as a result of 230 years of very hard work.” As a member of the community, Bobby recognizes the importance of solid leadership and a welcoming spirit. “I’m so thankful we have organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, and forward thinking, insightful leaders in our county government,” says Bobby. “Harlem and Grovetown also deserve credit for leadership. They work with our federal employers, not the least of which is Fort Gordon. The reception our municipalities give military families coming for either a short tour or long assignment is critical as these welcome residents choose a community in which to live.” Actively protecting Columbia County’s quality of life is a driving force behind the mission of the office Bobby has developed over the last six months. “It’s our duty to preserve, defend, and enhance that quality of life in this community,” he explains. “We do that in the district attorney’s office by pursuing justice for victims, for the community, and for the accused while also protecting law enforcement’s legal maneuver space.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . With a staff of only sixteen, those in the office work hard but are exhilarated by the tasks at hand. “We have a staff half as large as many predicted was necessary to get the job done,” says Bobby. “Benchmark counties against which we are compared, which are counties with similar court systems, similar numbers of judges, and similar populations, have more than twice that many staff. By creating processes and procedures that meet the needs of this community, we’re able to work efficiently. I’m so proud of this staff, both lawyers and non-lawyers, that my heart just swells. They’ve come together quickly and are getting it done.” In addition to addressing present concerns, Bobby makes it his mission to prepare his team for the future. “It’s my job in the district attorney’s office to provide purpose, motivation, and direction,” he explains. “I do that by having recruited and assembled a phenomenal staff. Every day I’m engaged with them to teach, mentor, and coach. We’re not only prosecuting today’s crime, we’re continuously pursuing professional education to be ready to meet and prosecute the criminal activity of tomorrow.”

“When I was U.S. Attorney, I was chief federal law enforcement officer for eighty-nine counties,” says Bobby. “I saw a lot of counties that got it wrong, but Columbia County has gotten it right. However, if we take our eye off the ball, that can change quickly. We owe it to the folks who made it this way, and the folks who come behind us, to keep this quality of life.” Bobby’s desire to engage the community and get citizens to help deter crime is highlighted in a public service announcement. In the PSA, Bobby invites citizens to follow this simple motto: lock what you leave. “Over ninety-four percent of illegal entries to vehicles are made to vehicles left unlocked,” explains Bobby. “We know criminals go to neighborhoods and parking lots and only

enter cars which are unlocked. If it’s locked, they move on. The easiest way for you to back the blue and cut down on the number of crimes is to simply lock what you leave.” Ultimately, it’s about the community continuing to work together to keep Columbia County a great place to live, work, and play. “If we work together to preserve the rule of law, then we will preserve our quality of life,” says Bobby. “We will preserve what’s right in this community, and we’ll do it with a maximum amount of freedom…that’s the blessing of America, which is evidenced no better than right here in Columbia County. Rhett Walker, a Christian singer and songwriter, is a native of the CSRA. Both he and his wife April grew up in the Aiken area. “We just moved back to the CSRA from Nashville three years ago. All of our family lives out here,” says Rhett. He and his wife have four kids, Rileigh, Jett, Autumn, and Cash. They homeschool their children and love to travel. “I have wanted to do music since I was young. I would stand in front of the mirror playing guitar and pretend that I was on stage,” says Rhett. He would also lead worship at churches on Sundays and Wednesdays trying to make ends meet by doing music. “One day my mom said, ‘If you wanted to be a surfer, you’d move to the ocean. It felt like everything was taken from us,” shares Rhett. “We felt like we really needed to put things in gear and I was bringing up the old saying ‘all gas, no brake.’ The more we thought about it, we decided that that’s no way to live either. We wanted to look at the silver lining, we were back home and with our family. So instead of all gas, no brake, we want to try to live all joy, no stress.”

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time.
