October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Amber Conner, owner of Sinless Sweets bakery, and learned about what their fall menu will be boasting.—so get your tastebuds ready, you are in for a treat. We also included a few new recipes for you to try at home, whether you’re cooking for just your family or for entertaining guests. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Pam Lien Knitting For Others “We knit hats for the newborns at Piedmont hospital,” says Pam Lien, founder of Knitting for Others. For fifteen years, this group of ladies from the CSRA has been meeting once a week and have made thousands of hats for newborns. Every few months Pam will drop off the hats at the hospital. “We take anywhere from one hundred to one hundred fifty hats each time. The nurses get so excited when we bring them,” says Pam. “We also make teeny tiny hats for Resurrection Lutheran Church. They have tiny hats, dresses, and blankets for babies who have passed,” says Pam. If you would like to knit or crochet hats for newborns, the ladies of Knitting for Others meet at Edgar’s Bakery inside the Fury’s Ferry Goodwill every Thursday from 10am to 2pm.

Officer Lonnie Payne Columbia County Board of Education School District Police Greenbrier Middle School We would like to say thank you to Officer Payne who protects our children at Greenbrier Middle School! A typical day for Officer Payne involves greeting students, checking the building to make sure all doors and windows are locked, and making sure everything is safe at school. “It’s the kids that really make it for me. At the end of last year, I had a student come up to me to give me a card and thank me. She told me that I had really helped her out and that I was like a second father to her. It was really touching,” says Officer Payne. Thank you for your dedication to protect our children and for your service in the community!

Donna Player, Director Columbia County Cares The Columbia County Cares Food Pantry has been in operation for twenty-five years. Director Donna Player tells us that they serve an average of one hundred fifty to two hundred families each month. “People can come and get groceries free of charge. We provide meat, canned goods, and health and comfort items to those who are in need,” says Donna. “I have always had a heart for those who are in need and I wanted to give back to the community. This is my way of doing that,” says Donna. Columbia County Cares operates off of donations. Some of the top items they are currently in need of are meat, toilet paper, tea, laundry detergent, sugar, and flour. Columbia County Cares is open Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 2:00pm and is located at 1959 Appling Harlem Road, Appling, GA. Karen Strite Upside of Downs “We are a Down syndrome support group to encourage families and provide links to helpful resources that can be found in the area,” explains Karen Strite, the organization’s president. “We have social events and provide scholarships for individuals with Down syndrome for education and for participation in programs like Steps of Grace Ballet. Additionally, we are trying to bring Gigi’s Playhouse to the area and would love the community’s support in doing so.” On October 22nd, Upside of Downs will hold its annual fundraiser, the Buddy Walk, at Evans Towne Center Park. Amber Conner, owner of Sinless Sweets, specializes in making healthy treats and desserts. Before Sinless Sweets, Amber was the Head Personal Trainer at a local gym. In February 2020, when she was sixteen weeks pregnant with a baby girl, her life took an unexpected turn. Four days after celebrating with friends and family at her gender reveal party, Amber started showing signs of a miscarriage. After speaking with her doctor, he advised that she rest and come in for an appointment as soon as possible. Amber remembers not hearing a heartbeat during the sonogram and hoping that the volume was turned off. “When the doctor came into the room, he hugged me and told me that she was gone,” Amber shares. She wondered why this had happened to her and questioned what she had done to deserve this. Amber says that she remembers God saying to her “My will, My way” and decided to trust that He has a reason for everything. Shortly after, the gym Amber worked at temporarily closed due to covid. She spent that time at home with her son and started baking healthy treats to help her cope with the loss of her daughter. People saw what she was doing and asked if she would sell the treats she was baking. Amber decided to start an at-home bakery and it quickly became a full-time job. In April 2021, she launched her food truck, and in January 2022, Amber opened the Sinless Sweets storefront. When you walk inside her bakery, you’ll notice that the building layout is open concept. Amber loves to meet new people and make friends, so

she designed it so that when customers come inside, she can see and talk to them while she's baking. So what makes the treats at Sinless Sweets healthy? Amber can make any dessert keto-friendly, low carb, sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan. All of the treats at Sinless Sweets are made from scratch with recipes that Amber creates. Wanting to make sure every treat is perfect, she will sometimes spend months fine-tuning her recipes. The first recipe she made is her signature Carmelitas, a chocolatey and gooey caramel bar. Amber’s story came full circle in 2021. Her daughter, Henley Rose, was supposed to be born on July 29th, 2020. One year later, Amber’s son, Jaxon, was born on July 29th, 2021. “God was able to turn what was supposed to be a sad day, into a great day as we celebrate Jaxon,” says Amber. “My story is super important to me. My faith got me through. I thank the Lord everyday because He has His hands on this business. He took something so awful and made something beautiful. The CSRA boasts an ever-changing and eclectic food scene, which is why Scott Russell, food blogger with @6bitesin, encourages locals and visitors to keep stepping out of their routines and give something new, or renewed, a try. “I was at a restaurant the other day and this lady was complaining about how the food here locally just wasn’t any good,” shares Scott. “When I asked her where she’d been, she named about three places. And all I could think was that there are fifty more places around here that are amazing and she should definitely try them!” Scott loves food and uses his social media platform to share his experiences from around the CSRA. Sometimes he visits new restaurants and other times, he’s back at old favorites. No matter what, Scott encourages patrons not to give up on a restaurant forever just because they had a poor experience. “When I talk to somebody and they say they don’t like a place but they tell me they haven’t been to a place in three years, I feel like that’s not right. It’s definitely time to give

that restaurant a second chance,” says Scott. “Take Fifth & Finch for example. It was really struggling for a while, but two ladies have taken it over and now it's incredible. It's really a whole new restaurant with a completely different menu. The New Ming Wah is another good example of a local restaurant changing it up. It’s not a buffet anymore, it’s a sit-down restaurant now.” “There are also places like Noble Jones where they are always changing the menu, which makes it like a new experience when you visit,” explains Scott. “I also enjoy Manny's Sports Bar, which opened fairly recently. The chef specializes in Greek flavors so he's putting a Greek spin on regular bar foods. He makes this amazing Cuban that has pulled pork and gyro meat on it. It’s really good!” How does Scott find all these great places to try? “I ask around and get word of mouth recommendations… people are always recommending places to me,” shares Scott. “I also gravitate towards finding a new experience and seeing what a restaurant is all about before reading somebody else's

opinion about it. I just want to be able to experience it for myself. There are a lot of hidden gems in this area that might not pop up at the top of a Google search, but if you look for them, there are really good restaurants that are off the beaten path here.” Scott also encourages patrons to look for special events at restaurants, like wine or beer pairing events, which provide a great way to sample the menu. “Don't be afraid to try something,” says Scott. “You’ve just got to get out there and explore!” Scott’s love of food began early in his life as a result of frequent meals with his family gathered around the table laughing and enjoying one another. Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

SRP PARK Paceline’s signature bike ride is Sunday, October 16th. PaceDay 2022 will start at SRP Park with three road routes and a one mile closed-circuit loop in downtown Augusta.
