From the Publisher's Desk (Or Under It)

Hello, Neighbors and Fellow Treat Enthusiasts!

If this letter looks different than usual, it’s because my mom - your usual publisher - is currently busy doing something called "deadlines." I’m not sure what those are, but they don't involve belly rubs or my ball, so I'm stepping in.

My name is Winnie, and while I may not be able to operate a camera, I am an expert in the finer things in life: sunbeams, the aforementioned belly rubs and the exact sound of a cheese wrapper opening from three rooms away.

Welcome to our Kids & Pets issue! Mom says this is our most "heartwarming" issue yet. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but if it’s anything like the feeling I get when the small humans drop bacon under the breakfast table, you’re gonna love it!

We’re celebrating the chaotic, beautiful and furry bond that makes a house a home. We’ve scouted the best of West O for you and your two- and four-legged offspring:

• Earl Outdoor Solutions: I speak from experience when I tell you Jack taught me the ropes after installing my DogWatch Invisible Fence system. Though it makes it challenging to enthusiastically greet the Amazon driver.

• Elkhorn Athletic Association: Their #RealLifeSocials campaign brings kids  together for in-person, tail-wagging good times with all sorts of balls (my favorite).

• Eugene T. Mahoney State Park : Fun for all ages, from camping to kayaking and swimming.  I love swimming - it's also my favorite.

• The City Scene : This month, it's a compilation of all the coolest cats (and other fun creatures) from our partners and community members, with the coolest of them all, gracing our cover.

I hope you enjoy these pages as much as I enjoyed dropping my ball on Mom's lap while she worked on them. Please excuse any nose prints on the paper - it's just my "Editor’s Seal of Approval."

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I hear a delivery truck and I have some very important barking to do.

Stay paws-itive,

Guest Editor & Professional Good Girl

EARL OUTDOOR Solutions

THE SIMPLE ANSWER TO BETTER OUTDOOR LIVING

The sun sets on another job well done by Earl Outdoor Solutions. Children laugh and play while mom and dad gather around the fire pit, admiring the family tree, beautifully illuminated as dusk settles in. The dog roams freely through the yard while music drifts softly through the backyard, creating the perfect soundtrack for a summer evening.

It’s the kind of experience Jack Earl hopes every project creates.

“Our mission is to make your outdoor space enjoyable and useful so you can have fun and enjoy it without a headache,” Earl says.

BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP

At 17, while most teenagers were thinking about graduation, Jack Earl was thinking about buying a business.

In 2020, while still a junior, Earl purchased a small hidden dog fence company after his uncle, a business broker, introduced him to the opportunity.

“I always liked dogs and I liked working outside, so it just worked out really well to be able to do both,” Earl says.

The timing couldn’t have been better. As pet ownership surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for hidden dog fences grew right along with it.

“Our first year we installed 300 fences, while the previous owner had installed 100,” Earl says. “It was a ton of fun, but it was pretty busy that first year.”

The company began as an hidden dog fence business, but as Earl spent more time helping homeowners, he recognized another need. Families were investing in patios, pools and landscaping, yet many couldn’t fully enjoy those spaces after sunset.

Earl Outdoor Solutions gradually expanded to include landscape lighting and outdoor audio, allowing the company to create complete outdoor environments while furthering Earl’s mission of helping Omaha homeowners fully enjoy their outdoor spaces.

Jack Earl, owner of Earl Outdoor Solutions and DogWatch Omaha with his dog, Bentley

CREATING SPACES WORTH COMING HOME TO

Earl Outdoor Solutions exists to help homeowners get more from their outdoor spaces. Whether it’s keeping a beloved dog safely in the yard, bringing a backyard to life after sunset or creating an immersive outdoor audio experience, every project is designed to help families spend more time enjoying the place they call home.

The work isn’t about installing products. It’s about creating outdoor spaces where families can relax, gather and make memories.

WHEN DOGS AND LANDSCAPING DON’T MIX

Homeowners invest thousands of dollars creating beautiful outdoor spaces, only to have curious dogs trample flower beds, damage irrigation systems or wander away.

One project brought nearly every one of Earl’s services together.

“When I was doing the estimate, I noticed their dogs were tearing up all the landscape lights,” Earl says. “We installed a hidden dog fence around the landscaping so the dogs couldn’t get into the lights or irrigation anymore. They had 50 or 60 lights that weren’t working because the dogs had damaged them. We repaired everything, added additional lights and upgraded the system.

“It was fun because we got to do everything for them, the lighting, the speakers and the dog fence.”

Sometimes the impact reaches far beyond landscaping.

“I have a lot of customers that are on the verge of getting rid of their dog,” Earl says. “If I’m able to help them keep their animal, that makes it all worth it.”

LIGHTING THE WAY

Pets aren’t the only obstacle to enjoying an outdoor space. As the sun sets, beautiful patios disappear into darkness, carefully designed landscaping goes unnoticed and meaningful touches like American flags, garden art and architectural details fade into the background.

Earl frequently hears from homeowners frustrated because delivery drivers can’t find their home after dark. Often, the solution is as simple as illuminating the house numbers.

“It’s a pretty common problem, and it’s a very simple fix,” Earl says. “Usually, all that’s needed is a light to illuminate the numbers on the home, and that saves homeowners a lot of headaches.”

An illuminated address also helps first responders quickly identify the correct home during an emergency.

Beyond safety, landscape lighting transforms a home’s appearance by highlighting trees, walkways and architectural details while improving curb appeal and extending the enjoyment of outdoor spaces long after sunset.

TURN UP THE MUSIC

The party doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down.

Professionally designed outdoor audio systems ensure everyone enjoys the soundtrack, whether they’re relaxing on the patio, gathered around the fire pit or playing in the pool.

“A lot of homes have very outdated audio systems,” Earl says. “They don’t operate on Bluetooth, and their speakers just don’t project very well.”

Outdoor lighting transforms homes after sunset, showcasing architectural details while improving safety and welcoming evening guests home.
Landscape lighting and sound systems are built to be naturally hidden into the setting.

While portable Bluetooth speakers work in a pinch, Earl says they create an uneven listening experience as guests move throughout the yard.

“It’s really neat to have speakers placed throughout the property so everyone enjoys the music equally,” he says.

A professionally designed system delivers consistent, high-quality sound across the property, eliminating dead zones while allowing conversations and music to coexist.

Earl Outdoor Solutions also services and upgrades existing lighting and audio systems, even when the company didn’t install them. Rather than recommending unnecessary replacements, Earl prefers to help homeowners get the most from what they already have.

BUILDING A BETTER OMAHA, ONE BACKYARD AT A TIME

At just 23 years old, Jack Earl has spent the past six years building more than a successful business. He’s earned a reputation for personally overseeing every installation, following up with customers after the job is complete and delivering the kind

of service that has led to hundreds of glowing Google reviews.

“My goal is to earn good Google reviews and just make sure everyone’s happy with the work we’ve done,” he says. “I do all the installs personally... I want everything done perfectly.”

As summer settles across the Omaha metro, each project becomes part of something bigger. Every illuminated walkway, protected pet, backyard gathering and family celebration strengthens the neighborhoods that make this community feel like home. One backyard at a time, Earl Outdoor Solutions is helping make Omaha a little safer, a little brighter and a little more beautiful.

MEET THE OWNER: JACK EARL

Jack Earl launched DogWatch at just 17 years old after purchasing a small hidden dog fence company. Today, he has grown the business to include landscape lighting and outdoor audio, helping homeowners create safer, more enjoyable outdoor spaces. Known for personally overseeing every installation, Jack is passionate about quality craftsmanship, exceptional customer service and creating backyards where families can relax, gather and make lasting memories.

MORE THAN A GAME

How Elkhorn Athletic Association Is Creating Real-Life Connections for Kids Through it's #RealLifeSocials Campaign

In a world where notifications, group chats and social feeds have become part of everyday life, many families are searching for ways to help their kids build meaningful connections beyond a screen. At the heart of Elkhorn Athletic Association’s growing #RealLifeSocials campaign is a simple but powerful

“Some of the most important conversations kids will have won't happen through a screen. They'll happen on a sideline...”

idea: The most important social experiences still happen face-to-face.

Whether it’s lacing up cleats before a soccer game, laughing with teammates during practice or celebrating a hard-earned win, youth sports continue to provide something kids genuinely need: real connection, real confidence and real community.

For generations, sports have been about more than learning the rules of a game. They’ve been about belonging. And at EAA, that sense of belonging is intentionally built into every level of the organization. With 10 sports programs and thousands of participating athletes, EAA has become one of the strongest community-centered youth athletic organizations in the area. While competitive development plays a role, the foundation of the organization remains recreational sports, an environment designed to be welcoming, inclusive and rooted in community.

That recreational foundation is what inspired the launch of #RealLifeSocials.

Rather than positioning sports as an alternative to technology, EAA views athletics as an important balance. Screens can educate, entertain and help kids stay connected, but youth sports offer something that cannot be replicated digitally: genuine interaction through shared experiences.

As Executive Director Joe Greco explains, “Some of the most important conversations kids will have won’t happen through a screen. They’ll happen on a sideline, in a huddle or during the ride home after practice. Those are the moments that build character, friendship and community.”

At the recreational level, EAA focuses heavily on creating teams that feel familiar and comfortable for young athletes. Whenever possible, teams are formed around neighborhoods, schools and friend requests.

Every season brings new friendships, lasting memories and opportunities for young athletes to grow on and off the field.

That intentional approach helps ease first-season nerves and creates an environment where kids are excited to participate from day one. Practices feel fun instead of intimidating. Games become something they look forward to. And over time, teammates become close friends both on and off the field.

Parents see it happen quickly. The friendships formed during a season often extend into school hallways, birthday parties, backyard games and weekends spent together as families.

Greco sees those relationships as one of youth sports’ greatest benefits. “The friendships kids build through sports don’t end when the final whistle blows. They carry into classrooms, neighborhoods and everyday life, creating the kind of real-world connections that shape confident, connected young people.”

Those are the moments EAA hopes to celebrate through #RealLifeSocials.

Beyond the friendships, recreational sports help kids develop life skills that reach beyond athletics. Young athletes learn teamwork while working toward a shared goal. They learn communication by listening to coaches and encouraging teammates. They learn resilience through victories and setbacks, and they build confidence by showing up and trying something new.

Equally important, recreational sports provide consistent opportunities for kids to stay active and engaged away from screens. Not because technology is inherently negative, but because balance matters.

While recreational sports remain the heartbeat of EAA, the organization also offers select programs for athletes seeking a higher level of competition and development. Formed through tryouts and coach recommendations, select teams allow players to challenge themselves while continuing to build relationships with teammates who share similar goals and commitment.

Together, both recreational and select programs provide pathways for athletes at every level.

But perhaps what makes EAA stand out most is the organization’s commitment to building community beyond sports itself.

Youth sports create lasting friendships while helping young athletes build confidence, character and a strong sense of community.
“The friendships kids build through sports don't end when the final whistle blows. They carry into

classrooms, neighborhoods and everyday life, creating the kind of real-world connections that shape confident, connected young people.”

Over the years, EAA athletes, coaches and volunteers have become deeply involved in initiatives throughout Elkhorn and the surrounding area. From participating in local food drives and volunteering at community soup kitchens to marching in the Elkhorn Days Parade and supporting area events, EAA continues to create opportunities for kids to give back while learning the value of service.

For parents, there’s reassurance in knowing their child is part of something positive. Youth sports can become a safe and encouraging place during years when confidence and social development

matter most. They create opportunities for children to feel seen, supported and connected.

At its core, #RealLifeSocials is a reminder that some of life’s best moments still happen in person. They happen on sidelines and basketball courts, in dugouts and gymnasiums, during carpools and team celebrations. They happen when kids show up, play together, encourage one another and create friendships that feel authentic and lasting.

Those moments matter.

And through every practice, game and season, EAA is proud to help create them.

FROM FIRSTS to FOREVER

Eugene T. Mahoney State Park Creates Lifelong Memories for Generations

Eugene T. Mahoney State Park is no stranger to firsts. As park employees climb into their vehicles each morning to head across the property, they know another day of creating lifelong memories is about to begin. The anticipation of full parking lots, children’s laughter and breathtaking views is enough to keep many of them returning year after year.

Somewhere in the park, a child will climb onto a horse for the first time. A father and son will reel in their first fish. A retiree will discover the joy of birding, learning to recognize the birds, wildflowers and native plants that call Nebraska home. And as the sun dips below the trees, families will gather around campfires, making their first memories of the season with toasted marshmallows, gooey s’mores and grilled hot dogs beneath the open sky.

One of those employees is Michael Townsend, regional superintendent of Venture Parks for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Townsend oversees the park corridor between Omaha and Lincoln, including Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, Platte River State Park, Louisville State Recreation Area and several others. He has been with the agency for eight years and shares the deep appreciation for Mahoney that keeps so many visitors returning year after year.

“Mahoney State Park is a memory-making machine,” Townsend recalls. “Part of my job is making sure people leave feeling that nostalgia and wanting to come back. I want it to be a place of peace and fun, somewhere families want to return to again and again.”

ALL YEAR ROUND

And return they do. Eugene T. Mahoney State Park welcomes more than 800,000 visitors each year, making it one of Nebraska’s most popular outdoor destinations. A cornerstone of the Venture Parks system within the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Mahoney has earned its reputation by offering something for every season.

“There’s really something for everyone in the family, no matter their age,” Townsend says.

Families embrace the mess during the park’s annual Mudville event, where children are encouraged to get their hands, feet and clothes dirty while discovering the wonders of nature. Winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing, ice skating on the park’s new Glice Rink and other cold-weather adventures. In the summer, Popcorn Productions takes center stage with interactive melodramas that invite audiences to boo the villains, cheer the heroes and toss popcorn as the story unfolds.

“Our melodramas feature the classic villain, hero and heroine,” Townsend explains with a smile. “They’re about 90 minutes long with a short intermission.”

Summer, however, is when Mahoney truly comes alive. One of its biggest draws is the aquatic center, where visitors can race down towering water slides, splash through a zero-depth entry wave pool, swim in a traditional pool with a diving area and explore an interactive water playground designed for younger children. Together, the attractions make the aquatic center a favorite destination for families looking to beat the Nebraska heat.

“The zombie kind of drains off the kids' faces. You see that smile, and you see that spark return.”

STAY AWHILE

According to Townsend, spending the night is one of the best ways to experience Mahoney State Park.

“We have 148 campsites and 60 cabins, ranging from cozy two-bedroom cabins to a Mini Lodge that sleeps up to 20 people, complete with bunk beds, two kitchens and everything a large family needs,” Townsend states.

For those who prefer a hotel stay, the recently renovated Peter Kiewit Lodge offers comfortable, affordable accommodations in the heart of the park, with easy access to Mahoney’s many attractions.

One of Townsend’s favorite places to stay, however, is the park’s newly renovated treetop cabins. Nestled among the trees, the cabins feature second-story Murphy beds, fireplaces and sweeping views of the surrounding woodlands, creating the perfect blend of comfort and nature.

MORE THAN A PARK - A PLACE FAMILIES RETURN TO

A favorite among Nebraskans, Mahoney State Park has become a place where traditions take root. It’s not uncommon for families to reserve lodging year after year for annual reunions, camping trips and vacations that span generations.

One of those returning visitors is Joanie Stone, who has been coming to the park with her family for decades. A passionate camper and enthusiastic supporter of the park’s events, Stone has become a familiar face at Mahoney.

“Joanie is a staple,” Townsend says. “We love hearing her voice over the radio, and she really has become like family here at the park.”

Stone serves as a camp host, part of a volunteer program that welcomes dedicated visitors back in a unique way. The program gives repeat visitors an opportunity to help care for the park while becoming an integral part of its culture and community.

“They’re the greatest,” Townsend explains. “Camp hosts receive two weeks of free camping in exchange for volunteering their time. They help with campground checkins and checkouts, check restrooms and other facilities, make sure campfires are extinguished and serve as an extra set of eyes throughout the campground.”

“Mahoney State Park is a memory-making machine.  I want it to be a place of peace and fun, somewhere families want to return to again and again.”
Towering water slides and interactive splash zones make Mahoney's aquatic center a favorite summer destination for families.

WHERE WONDER NEVER GROWS OLD

As technology competes for more of our attention, Townsend believes places like Mahoney have never been more important. He smiles as he describes the transformation that happens when children trade tablets for trails.

“The zombie kind of drains off their face,” Townsend says. “You see that smile and you see that spark return.”

At Mahoney, there’s room for every stage of life. Children take their first horse ride, race down their first water slide or discover the thrill of climbing a rock wall. Parents unplug long enough to reconnect around a campfire. Retirees return with binoculars in hand to take up birding, and longtime visitors like Joanie Stone eventually become campground hosts, giving back to the place that has given their families so many memories.

Perhaps that’s Mahoney’s greatest achievement. It’s more than a state park. It’s a place families grow up with, where firsts become traditions and traditions become legacies. Long after the campfire fades and the suitcases are unpacked, it’s those memories that call people back, generation after generation.

Every great horseback adventure begins with one unforgettable first ride and a little courage to explore.
Mahoney State Park brings generations together through adventure, tradition and unforgettable moments shared in Nebraska's outdoors.

The Ultimate Staycation for Your Four-Legged Family Member

Because your dog deserves a vacation, too.

Summer travel season is in full swing, and while families are busy planning beach getaways, golf trips and long weekends at the lake, many pet owners face the same question: Where can I leave my dog knowing they’ll be cared for like family?

At The Paw Spa Pet Resort, the answer is simple. Founded by dog lover Sheila Irish, The Paw Spa was designed around a belief that resonates with pet owners everywhere: dogs are family. That philosophy is woven into every aspect of the resort, from the personalized care each guest receives to the thoughtfully designed amenities that make tails wag from check-in to pick-up.

Forget the image of a traditional boarding kennel. The Paw Spa offers spacious suites complete with comfortable Kuranda beds, climate-controlled accommodations and plenty of room for dogs to relax after a busy day of play. Throughout their stay, guests enjoy supervised indoor and outdoor play sessions where they can socialize, exercise and burn off energy with friends.

One of the resort’s most popular features is its indoor boneshaped swimming pool. Whether they’re seasoned swimmers or simply looking to cool off, dogs can splash, paddle and play regardless of the Nebraska weather outside.

The fun doesn’t stop there. More than 6,000 square feet of outdoor play space gives dogs room to run and explore, while expansive indoor areas ensure year-round activity. Pet parents can even check in on their furry family members through live webcams, offering peace of mind while they’re away.

The Paw Spa also offers professional grooming services, making it easy for dogs to return home looking just as good as they feel. From baths and nail trims to full grooming appointments, services are tailored to each pet’s needs.

Perhaps what truly sets The Paw Spa apart is the attention to detail. Vaccination requirements, rigorous cleanliness standards, advanced air filtration systems and personalized care plans help ensure every guest enjoys a safe and healthy stay. Dogs requiring medication or special feeding instructions receive the same thoughtful attention they would at home.

For Irish and her team, luxury isn’t just about amenities - it’s about

creating an experience where pets feel comfortable, loved and cared for from the moment they walk through the door.

So while you’re making memories on your next getaway, your dog can enjoy a vacation of their own.

And judging by the excitement many guests show when they arrive, they may already be counting down the days.

Dogs splash and play in The Paw Spa's indoor pool, enjoying year-round fun regardless of Nebraska's weather.
Spacious suites, personalized care and supervised play give every guest a comfortable, tail-wagging home away from home.

ENJOYING SUMMER

In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!

Beach Ball Garland

Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed?  It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!

Materials

• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)

• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)

• Thin rope or twine

• Air pump

Instructions

1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!

2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.

3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.

4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.

Watermelon Cake

A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!

Ingredients

• 2 large watermelons

• Assortment of berries and fruit

• 4 wooden skewers

• Toothpicks

• Whipped cream (optional)

• Fresh mint (optional)

Instructions

1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.

2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.

3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.

4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.

“I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way.”

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
