The Gentlemens Edition

Welcome to the rugged and heartfelt pages of our special edition of El Dorado Hills City Lifestyle, where we pay homage to the timeless virtues of strength, camaraderie, and integrity in the men we admire most. As Father's Day approaches, we extend a warm salute to the father figures who embody these values, leading us through life’s challenges.

Our June issue is dedicated to celebrating the men in our lives.  Inside these pages, we will embark on a journey of local heritage, raising a glass of whiskey to our gold rush ancestry with an El Dorado Hills distillery that epitomizes community and distinction.  Jump ahead a few decades to a neighborhood business that has become well-known as a central hub for convenience and customer satisfaction in the hardware community, celebrating over a century of service.  We also share our conversation with a local naturopathic doctor who gives us her insight into the intricate world of hormone replacement therapy.  Additionally, we touch upon the sacred bond shared between father and son, as we navigate the exciting and contemplative world of fly fishing.  And finally, we offer a glimpse into one of the finest and most innovative EV vehicles of 2024, traversing our local rugged terrain with style.

So, here's to the men who help fulfill our lives every day.  May the spirit of adventure always guide you through the wilderness of life.  May your glasses be full, your vehicles mighty, and your fishing lines forever taut.  Happy Father's Day, gentlemen.

Elevated Spirits

THE BOTTLED GOLD OF EL DORADO

El Dorado County has continuously shined with its wealth of outdoor adventures, thriving agriculture, and renowned wine, craft beer, and spirits scene.  However, what sets our community apart is its deep-rooted history intertwined with the iconic gold rush which has helped to shape a unique array of towns and businesses.

Placerville, situated at the heart of the region, was originally known as Dry Diggins, a gold mining camp located beside Hangtown Creek; later dubbed simply 'Hangtown' (for reasons obvious to its visitors). The name ‘Dry Diggins’ depicted the miners' laborious non-river mining task of carting dry soil by hand to running water for gold extraction, symbolizing the hopeful spirit of those who ventured here. These small towns vividly exemplified the rough-and-tumble lifestyle of the era.

The prospect of riches, however, often came with significant challenges and hardships.  The need for these weary miners to seek solace usually came in one simple form: The local tavern. A place where they could indulge in libations, swap stories, and get a reprieve from their arduous daily tasks.  Contrary to popular belief, whiskey was not the primary offering during these early gold rush days.  Brandy was the more accessible and affordable choice.  However, whiskey held its reign supreme, as evidenced by a "storied" bottle in 1865 fetching nearly its weight in gold.

Only a seasoned distiller understands the intricacies behind crafting a smooth, perfectly balanced whiskey. Each has their own secret ingredients and methods. Barrel care, both art and science, is influenced by factors like heat variations, humidity levels, stacking methods, and light exposure—all crucial for achieving the ideal conditions for a flawless finish. Despite the

nuances involved, every "Master Distiller" embodies years of hard work and dedication to craft this esteemed amber-colored treasure.  Enter the aptly named Dry Diggings Distillery, a rare gold nugget right here in El Dorado Hills.

Visiting Cris Stellar and his daughter Erica at their tasting room is a surprising experience given its unassuming location in the business park. Stepping inside, you're instantly transported back to that gold rush era, evoking nostalgia for simpler times and inspiring hope for better days ahead. "We focus on distilling whiskey for taste rather than for mixing cocktails," Cris explains.  Prepare to stand, not sit, at their vintage bar, sampling some of the finest whiskeys you've ever experienced while listening to them passionately share their journey in distilling.

Cris reveals that he began his distilling venture in 2012 with a desire to create a tailored whiskey to his own taste.  With no plans for commercial distribution, his now renowned 'Rubicon' remains their top-selling product.  “Do your own thing; find your own path,” has evolved into a guiding principle for the ethos of his business. Cris further shares,  “We do what we love for the locals, not for social media.  We pour things the people want to enjoy.  We pour from our hearts.”  When asked what’s the best bottle they sell, Erica states that this is extremely subjective.  “It depends on one’s personal preferences.  We want to ensure the right bottle goes to the right person, regardless of distilling age.  We help patrons to learn their flavors, and discover their pallets.

“The prospect of riches often came with significant challenges and hardships. The need for these weary miners to seek solace usually came in one simple form: The local tavern.”

A lot of that comes from the conversations we have.”  Many of the spirits they bottle will never make it to resale shelves and can only be purchased from the distillery itself. Some will only be bottled once, never to be replicated; such as the exclusive 138 proof version of their popular Engine 49 Bourbon, just in time for Father’s Day.  If whiskey isn’t your preferred choice, they also offer a selection of impressive gins, vodkas, and brandies.

Whatever you're tasting, it's evident that this family possesses a passion for distilling coupled with a remarkable talent for storytelling that captivates.  Although they have partnered with many key players in the libation community, they prefer to keep things simple.  Similar to our gold rush ancestors, they strive to cultivate a sense of community. And, like crafting a fine whiskey, they are refining Dry Diggings Distillery to achieve a perfect finish that reflects their expert craftsmanship and taste.

Founded in 1908 by brothers James and Clay Emigh, the business passed into the hands of James' sons Albert, James Jr., and Colby in the early 1930s. Joining the Ace Hardware Corporation in the 1960s, the company introduced a cartoon character depicting a pigtailed girl in overalls saying, “Call me Amy.” Little Amy, a composite of Colby and Jesma Emigh’s daughters Carol and Mary, is still a familiar feature in Emigh Hardware advertisements.

Colby Emigh's dedication to customer happiness emphasized employee training, service excellence, and effective advertising. In 1971, his son-in-law Rich Lawrence took the helm as general manager, overseeing the relocation to the current 35,000-square-foot location in 1973. Fast forward to 2022, Emigh Ace Hardware expanded its footprint by opening a second location in El Dorado Hills Town Center, extending its tradition of outstanding service and offering a diverse array of merchandise.

Fly fishing bliss on local waters

In the quiet moments of dawn or dusk, fly fishing transforms into a journey, a communion with nature. The angler melds with the river, sensing its every nuance and shift. Each ripple upon the surface tells a story, a whispered secret shared between water and sky, binding angler and environment in a timeless bond.

Fly fishing is more than just angling; it's a test of skill, a graceful dance between man and the elements. Each cast is a testament to patience and precision, a calculated move in the pursuit of the perfect catch. The fly, carefully chosen, becomes a tantalizing offering to the denizens below. With a rhythmic cadence, the angler controls the line, presenting the fly with a lifelike allure, mimicking the movements of natural prey. This practiced artistry can mesmerize even the most discerning of fish.

Reflecting on my youth, few memories are as cherished as those spent with a rod and reel in hand. Instead of lakeside outings with baited hooks, we immersed ourselves in the art of quietly stalking trout. We continually refined our skills,

learning to wade into the water with stealth, mend our lines with the current, and meticulously select and present the perfect flies. Each day spent on the water was an opportunity to earn the privilege of catching a fish.

I've been fortunate to continue to explore some of America's most remarkable fisheries alongside my father, father-in-law, brothers, and now, my son. From landing trophy catches in the glacial runoff of Kenai, Alaska, to navigating the vermillion cliffs in the tailwaters of the Grand Canyon, I'm grateful to share my passion with loved ones, creating unforgettable memories on the water.

The American West harbors legendary trout locales, with some of the most iconic fly fishing waters found right here, in Northern California. Surrounded by rugged landscapes, these enchanting trout streams carve their way through ancient forests, cascade down granite cliffs, and meander through verdant valleys, offering not just a haven for anglers, but a sanctuary for the soul.

The Trinity River in the Trinity Alps Wilderness attracts anglers with its wild rainbow and steelhead trout amidst redwoods and rushing water, while the McCloud River, originating from Mount Shasta, is known for its crystal-clear waters and native redband trout. The Upper Sacramento River offers quintessential fly fishing opportunities for various trout species and accessibility, while the Pitt River provides a rugged experience with challenging wading and deep pools, ideal for adventurous anglers seeking a challenge and solitude.

Though Northern California boasts many streams, it's the Lower Sacramento River that continually draws us back. Meandering through serene landscapes, this iconic river stretches over 100 miles from Shasta Dam, offering unparalleled trout fishing. Renowned for its abundant wild rainbow trout, the Lower Sac welcomes both seasoned anglers and newcomers to its tranquil waters. Its impressive trout populations, ranging from foot-long juveniles

to trophy-sized specimens, provide ample opportunities for success year-round.

As someone passionate about angling, I'm constantly seeking to enhance my abilities. Enlisting a local guide like those at Confluence Outfitters in Redding ensures a rewarding outing, optimizing both time and learning opportunities. Whether fishing solo or alongside a beginner, a guide's support streamlines the process, alleviating any challenges associated with skill development.

Undoubtedly, the most immersive and enriching way to explore these waters is through a guided drift boat excursion, offering expert navigation and unforgettable experiences. Learning with guides at Confluence Outfitters provides skilled instruction, backed by extensive experience in river navigation and fish targeting. With access to exclusive locations unreachable by foot, Confluence drift boats offer serene and rewarding fishing experiences. While I'd like to take credit for my son Jonah's angling prowess, it's the masters in casting and patience at Confluence Outfitters who deserve the accolades. Whether fishing with Luke Geraty, DJ Spivey, or any of their team, our experiences have been unmatched. Their supportive, kind, and knowledgeable guidance ensures every day on the river is exceptional leaving lasting memories etched in the mind.

These days on the water pass quickly while swapping stories, sharpening our skills, and sharing the joy of the catch and the heartache of those who got away.  The world fades into the distance, replaced by a deep connection to the raw beauty of nature among the tranquility of the wilderness. We anglers find respite from the hustle of modern life, immersing ourselves in the primal rhythms of the earth and water.

I am continually humbled, while fishing, recognizing our fleeting presence in life's grand scheme as I absorb the vastness of nature around me. I take solace in the lessons learned and the peace found from serene days on the water. I hope to continue to pass these insights on to my son, teaching him the parallels between fishing and life as he grows.

Each moment spent angling mirrors life’s journey - every movement deliberate, every decision purposeful. However, frequently we find ourselves surrendering to the river’s course, forced to navigate its currents with practiced ease and unyielding passion. Tight Lines!

Whether a novice or expert, Confluence Outfitters has the expertise to make your next fly fishing trip a a trip to remember.

Testosterone Therapy for Men

Testosterone therapy (TTh) has long been a subject of both fascination and controversy. Dr. Karla Alberts, ND has been prescribing testosterone therapy for 12 years at her clinic, Summit Naturopathic –  a multidisciplinary clinic that specializes in cardiometabolic health and bioidentical hormone therapies (bHRT) for both men and women – with offices located in Truckee and El Dorado Hills. We met with Dr. Karla Alberts to discuss the benefits of TTh for men and the misconceptions that may surround its reputation. Below, you will find a few common questions Dr. Alberts has encountered in her practice.

DOES TESTOSTERONE THERAPY CAUSE PROSTATE CANCER?

No, testosterone does not cause prostate cancer or any other type of cancer. This is one of the biggest misconceptions that I see with patients and practitioners alike. This fallacy came about as the result of a poorly designed study over 80 years ago, and we’ve been working to overturn this false perspective for many decades. Numerous, impressive studies have shown that men with higher testosterone levels have no increased risk of prostate cancer, and there are even studies to suggest that higher testosterone can actually lower the risk of this disease.

EXPLORING BENEFITS, DEBUNKING MYTHS, AND EMBRACING WELLNESS
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 26

IS

THERE A RISK OF HEART

ATTACKS

OR STROKES ASSOCIATED WITH TESTOSTERONE THERAPY?

A recent landmark study called the TRAVERSE trial, was an FDA-mandated trial to investigate the cardiovascular safety of testosterone. The study was vast and well-designed and looked at testosterone use in men who either already had pre-existing cardiovascular disease or possessed a high risk for it. The results provided reassurance that there was no increased risk of heart attack or stroke with testosterone use in these men.

Another important moment for TTh was in 2015, when, in an attempt to resolve these controversies, an international expert consensus conference was held to determine the benefits and risks of TTh. A panel of medical experts sifted through decades of research, and unanimously concluded the following: The evidence does not support increased risks for cardiovascular events or prostate cancer with TTh. And we continue to see evidence in support of this.

IS THERE ANY EVIDENCE

SUPPORTING THE OCCURRENCE OF "ROID RAGE" IN INDIVIDUALS UNDERGOING TESTOSTERONE THERAPY?

Aggressiveness and moodiness aren’t caused by high testosterone, but rather by what testosterone turns into, which is estrogen. It’s important to manage estrogen not just to mitigate side effects, but also to protect the prostate. In my practice, we have several ways to manage estrogen and keep it well-balanced. Testosterone, in all actuality, is quite calming and tends to balance out aggression, anxiety, and mood swings.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TTH?

Simply put - to make life better and to enhance the longevity of life.  Testosterone improves mental-emotional well-being, sleep, stamina, motivation, and energy, and also improves thyroid function. It improves sexual health and most certainly has a significant impact on intimacy and the quality of our relationships. It also enhances the ability to gain and maintain muscle mass, which is of utmost importance as we age. Testosterone has been shown to lower our risk of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, depression, cardiovascular disease, and prostate cancer. The risk of not doing TTh - in my opinion, is greater than the risk of doing it.

KARLA ALBERTS, ND

Chief Medical Officer of Summit Naturopathic summittahoe.com | 530.214.0440

WHAT IS THE METHOD FOR ADMINISTERING TESTOSTERONE?

Testosterone can be administered in many ways - oral, sublingual, topical, injections, and pellets. I can prescribe all routes of administration, and find injections to be the most efficacious for male patients.

HOW DO YOU OPTIMIZE TESTOSTERONE PROTOCOLS IN YOUR PATIENTS?

In addition to keeping an eye on testosterone and estrogen levels, my patients get a comprehensive workup twice per year, which also includes an assessment of thyroid and adrenal function, markers of inflammation and nutrient status, cardiovascular health, and metabolic markers. If any of these are imbalanced, we address them. All patients get custom recommendations for optimal dosing of testosterone and supportive supplements. Recommendations to protect cardiovascular health are discussed and can include lifestyle suggestions such as regular blood donations, setting exercise plans, or the use of pharmacotherapy.

Introducing the All-New 2024 Hummer: Redefining Power and Sustainability

BY

The rebirth of the Hummer marks a significant milestone in the evolution of electric vehicles, setting new standards for performance both on and off the road. With its innovative technology and cutting-edge design, the reincarnated Hummer exceeds expectations, offering unparalleled levels of power, agility, and versatility.

CONTINUED > 29 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ELDORADOHILLS JUNE 2024

Whether navigating rugged terrain or cruising city streets, this iconic vehicle redefines what it means to drive electric.

With up to 1,000 horsepower on the pickup, and up to 830 horsepower on the SUV, engaging WTF mode (aptly named Watts to Freedom) means 0-60 MPH can happen in as little as three seconds.

Advanced engineering with few design constraints means the Hummer can utilize its trademark Crabwalk and Extract modes, allowing this super truck to strafe diagonally in tricky environmental situations around objects, as well as raise itself by six inches for extra ground clearance when needed.

An estimated range of up to 381 miles for the pickup, and up to 314 miles for the SUV ensure day-to-day usability and versatility are not hindered thanks to its large Ultium battery pack. When it comes time to charge, the Hummer EV can take advantage of the latest DC fast chargers and recharge at up to 300 kW for hasty fillups.

And because it's a GMC, each Hummer is finished with luxurious interiors and has all the latest technology and amenities, including GM's heralded Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driving on compatible roads.

The latest Hummer represents far more than just a vehicle; it embodies a powerful symbol of freedom and limitless potential. It transcends the boundaries of conventional trucks, serving as a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation that drive human achievement.

2024 Hummer EVs are now available at Thompsons GMC in Placerville, CA, and special lease deals start at $999/month for select models.

The Perfect Steak

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?

1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.

2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.

3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.

4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.

6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.

7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:

• Rare: 120°F

• Medium Rare: 130°F

• Medium: 140°F

• Medium Well: 150°F

• Well: 160°F

8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.
