Finding Joy in a Little Bit of Style

September 2026 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Sarah Knieff | sarah.knieff@citylifestyle.com

Can we breathe again? Wooohooo… what a hot summer! We hope you had a great one, but now it’s time for back to school, cooler weather and a refresh for fall. September is our Style issue. I don’t know about you, but my style has fallen by the way side these past few years. Part Covid, part laziness, and just a habit of wanting to be comfortable and make things easy. For clothing, that usually means wearing a lot of black. But, I have made it a mission this fall to do some personal style editing in my life, and clear the slate for a new start. If you’re on a solo mission, or with friends and family, we have so many fun stores in Edina where popping in, socializing, and making a day of touring the shops can bring a lot of joy. And, since style can be integrated into a lot of things, it’s a fun and artistic way to express. Whether it’s your personal clothing style, your home, or a way you like to go about accomplishing something in your life, style is a unique imprint of you. If you are looking to maximize space and create beautiful storage areas in your home, Perfection Custom Closets shares their expertise in walk-ins, mudrooms, & creating the closet of your dreams. Locally owned and operated, Aman Bajwa, takes great pride in his business and the Edina community. Eyewear is always a great place to start if you want a new look. Whether it’s a necessity, just for fun, or sun protection, Owl Optical has a few recommendations for your lineup. Chris and Julie Hansen have a great selection of popular brands, and a knowledgeable team to help choose what will frame your face and meet your vision needs in the best way. Style often incorporates fashion, and our very own Sarah Knieff talks about the up and coming trends for fall including color, texture, handbags, outerwear & more to help you gear up to look amazing for the rest of 2026. Whether you’re keeping it simple or changing things up this September, we hope you do it in style!

Susan: There isn’t one ‘best’ financial advisor—there’s only the

one that’s the best fit for you. And that fit has everything to do with style. Start by asking yourself what you’re really looking for. Do you simply want someone to manage your investments, or are you looking for a trusted partner who can help with retirement planning, taxes, estate planning, charitable giving, and other important financial decisions throughout your life? Beyond the services, consider the advisor’s approach. The right advisor doesn’t impose a style—they adapt to yours. They take time to understand your specific complexity and build a plan that reflects who you are. Snap the QR code for my follow-up video discussing how to evaluate a financial advisor, the different types of firms, and the key questions to ask before choosing someone to guide your financial future.

When everything has a place, it cuts down not only on clutter, but also on stress. Searching for things can be incredibly frustrating, especially when time is short. Perfection Custom Closets has a process that makes creating beautifully organized spaces quick and easy. “We are using technology to always improve our whole process from start to finish,” says owner Aman Bajwa. Perfection has been a leading custom closet business in Chicago for nearly 30 years. Just over four years ago, the company was acquired by Kambium Capital, owned by Bajwa, who is now bringing the retail brand to his hometown of Edina. His team has more than 150 years of combined industry experience, including design, construction, and installation. When customers call, a scheduler will establish a convenient time for a designer to visit their homes or businesses and assess the space. The designer will then work with them one-on-one to find out exactly what they need and want. “They will ask all kinds of questions, such as how the person gets dressed and what kinds of clothes they wear, so they can design a closet that suits their day-to-day needs,” he says. For example, a bedroom closet designed for someone with many long dresses should include more hanging rods than

drawers. Homeowners with extensive collections of shoes, scarves, or jewelry need dedicated storage for those items. “The right designer is actually going to help organize your life,” says Aman. “We work with different spaces, providing you with drawings and pricing that go along with them. They will show you different finishes, colors, and materials and suggest various accessories such as a jewelry tray.” Customers are also welcome to visit their showrooms to view even more options. Once the design is finished and approved, the engineering team takes over. “This product has to be manufactured, and then, simultaneously, our install coordinator is going to schedule a date and time for installation based on when you can receive that product.” Unlike big corporate retailers, Perfection manufactures its products close to home. Bajwa’s manufacturing company, Kambium, has been producing closets and other cabinetry component parts at its Lakeville facility for a similar length of time, using domestic North American raw materials. “We have faster lead times, so if something were to happen, let’s say even two months down the road, we’re able to quickly replace a part that may be needed,” says Aman. “And because we don’t have corporate overhead and franchise fees, our prices are very competitive.” CONTINUED >

“THE RIGHT DESIGNER IS ACTUALLY GOING TO HELP ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE. WE WORK WITH DIFFERENT SPACES, PROVIDING YOU WITH DRAWINGS AND PRICING THAT GO ALONG WITH THEM.”

While Kambium manufactures items for Perfection Custom Closets, it also supplies and ships closet component parts to a network of 50-plus dealers all over the country. “We actually have three manufacturing facilities – the one in Lakeville, one in Princeton, and another in Chicago. That’s more than 70,000 square feet of manufacturing space.” Along with bedroom closets, Perfection also creates closet systems for pantries, mudrooms, bathrooms, entryways, laundry rooms, home offices, entertainment areas, garages and more.

“Maybe someone has an attic area, and they want to create a little playroom for their kids with cabinetry to store their toys,” he says. “We are able to do that too.” Another benefit of having a custom closet is being able to utilize all available space in a home or business. “You’re getting more storage for the same square footage because you can have shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, making the whole space more functional. You’re also adding value to your home when potential buyers see that custom closets have already been installed.” Once a closet is finished, the customer and designer conduct a final walkthrough together to ensure everything meets expectations. In addition to working with home and business owners on the retail side, the company operates a factory-direct wholesale business for contractors, builders, and interior designers. “We’ve been manufacturing closets in our backyard all these years, and now we’re bringing that craftsmanship right here to Edina,” says Aman. “We’re local. We live here, and our boys go to school here in Edina.” The beautiful new showroom, located in the same building as Wooden Hill Brewing Company, just opened this month. As a local, family-owned business led by an Edina resident, Perfection looks forward to providing friends and neighbors with perfect storage solutions for their everyday lives. How Eyewear Tr ends Ar e C h ang ing th e Way We Fram e Style

SEEING THE FUTURE ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF

For many people, choosing a new pair of glasses is about much more than improving vision. Eyewear has become an essential part of personal style – an accessory that can express confidence, creativity and individuality. At Owl Optical in Minneapolis, husband-and-wife owners Chris and Julie Hansen have built a reputation for helping clients discover frames that feel as unique as they are. As trends evolve, the Hansens have noticed that eyewear preferences often vary by generation. While some styles remain timeless, different age groups are approaching frames with their own perspectives on fashion, comfort and self-expression.

22

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | STYLE + BE AU T Y

“For older crowds, we still see a lot of aviators in all different shapes and thicknesses,” Chris says. “There are still a lot of people who want chunky frames that stand out, but there are also many people who want stylish but lightweight frames.” That balance between making a statement and finding everyday comfort has become a defining theme in eyewear today. While bold frames continue to have a strong following, many customers are looking for designs that feel effortless and easy to wear. Lightweight materials, including thin acetate and titanium, have grown increasingly popular for those who want a refined look without sacrificing comfort. The appeal of titanium frames, in particular, comes from their combination of durability and sleek design. These frames offer a minimalist aesthetic while remaining comfortable enough for allday wear, making them a favorite among clients who want sophistication without excess weight. Younger buyers, meanwhile, are often gravitating toward classic styles with a modern edge. Rather than chasing short-lived trends, many are investing in well-crafted frames from brands known for their heritage and craftsmanship. “Young people tend to want looks from Garrett Leight and MOSCOT,” Chris says. These timeless silhouettes reflect a growing appreciation for quality and design. Instead of simply purchasing glasses as a necessity, younger customers are often viewing eyewear as an investment piece – something carefully chosen and worn as part of their overall look. That interest in craftsmanship has also led to increased demand for high-end frames. The shop has seen customers embracing luxury eyewear brands such as Matsuda, along with its newest addition, Akoni. Known for meticulous construction and distinctive design, these brands appeal to those looking for frames that are both functional and artistic. While neutral colors continue to dominate sales, there is still room for personality. “There is still a desire for color, though we sell more black and tortoise shell frames,” Chris says. Black and tortoise remain classics for a reason. They are versatile, sophisticated and able to complement a wide range of styles. At the same time, subtle variations in color, texture and transparency allow customers to find frames that feel personal without being overwhelming.

Certain shapes have also maintained their popularity. Cat-eye frames continue to attract customers who appreciate a vintage-inspired silhouette with a contemporary feel. Round frames remain another enduring favorite, offering a softer shape that works across a variety of face shapes and personal styles. One of the strongest trends the Hansens have noticed is a continued preference for larger frames. Oversized eyewear has remained popular, offering both a fashion-forward appearance and a sense of confidence. “We are still seeing larger frames sell better on average,” Chris says. The move toward larger silhouettes reflects a broader shift in eyewear toward individuality. Rather than blending in, many customers are choosing frames that become a defining part of their appearance. At the same time, some trends are beginning to fade. Narrow frames, once a popular choice, have fallen out of favor as customers move toward more substantial shapes. Clear

24

frames have also become less dominant, replaced by translucent options that offer a softer, more nuanced take on transparency. For the Hansens, the ever-changing world of eyewear is what makes their work so rewarding. Each customer brings a different sense of style, personality and lifestyle needs, and the goal is to find a frame that feels like a natural extension of who they are. Whether someone is searching for a bold statement piece, a lightweight everyday frame or a beautifully crafted luxury design, today’s eyewear options offer more ways than ever to showcase individuality. At Owl, Chris and Julie Hansen continue to help clients see clearly – while making sure they look their best doing it. [ the season of sophisticated style ] 28

FASH ION F OR WA R D | S HOPPIN G

FALL 2026 BLENDS LUXURIOUS FABRICS, ELEVATED BASICS AND MODERN SILHOUETTES INTO A WARDROBE DESIGNED TO LAST WELL BEYOND THE SEASON

As crisp air returns and leaves begin their annual transformation, wardrobes are changing, too. Fall 2026 proves that fashion does not have to shout to make a statement. Instead, the season is defined by thoughtful details, quality craftsmanship and versatile pieces that feel as good as they look. It is a season built around investment dressing—clothing and accessories that layer beautifully and move easily from weekday meetings to weekend brunches. The biggest shift this autumn is a renewed appreciation for quality over quantity. Shoppers are gravitating toward timeless silhouettes with contemporary updates rather than chasing trends that disappear within months. The result is a wardrobe filled with pieces that feel current now but will remain relevant for years. Color tells the story first. While black remains a fall essential, 2026 welcomes an earthy, sophisticated palette inspired by nature. Rich espresso brown has emerged as the season’s defining neutral, appearing in everything from leather jackets to tailored trousers. Deep olive, warm cinnamon, burgundy, plum and charcoal offer endless layering possibilities, while creamy oatmeal and soft ivory brighten outfits without losing seasonal warmth.

Unexpected accents of cobalt blue, forest green and mustard add personality. Rather than dressing head to toe in one shade, the season encourages mixing complementary colors to create depth and visual interest. Texture is equally important. Suede continues its comeback, appearing on jackets, skirts, handbags and footwear. Velvet returns for evening occasions, while brushed wool, chunky knits and supple leather dominate daytime dressing. The emphasis is on fabrics that invite touch and add dimension without relying on loud prints or heavy embellishment. Outerwear, as always, becomes the hero of the season. Long tailored coats remain essential, especially in camel, chocolate brown and charcoal. Oversized yet structured wool coats strike the right balance between comfort and refinement, while cropped barn jackets and quilted field coats offer a relaxed alternative. Leather trenches and belted suede jackets provide an elevated option for those looking to make a subtle statement. Even denim jackets receive an update, arriving in darker washes with cleaner lines and minimal detailing. Layered over lightweight turtlenecks or cashmere sweaters, they offer an easy solution for shifting temperatures. Tailoring also takes on a softer approach. Instead of rigid suiting, designers are embracing relaxed silhouettes with fluid movement. Wideleg trousers continue their reign, paired with fitted knits or oversized blazers that create proportion without feeling overly formal. Pleated trousers, once reserved for the office, now appear alongside sneakers, loafers and ankle boots for everyday wear. Matching sets remain popular, but they feel less corporate and more approachable. Coordinated knits, monochromatic separates and relaxed suiting make getting dressed simpler while maintaining an effortlessly polished appearance. Denim is undergoing its own quiet evolution. High-rise silhouettes remain strong, although cuts are becoming more varied. Relaxed straightleg jeans, full-length wide legs and subtle bootcut styles are replacing ultra-baggy fits. Dark indigo, black denim and rich chocolate tones feel especially fresh for fall, often paired with crisp white shirts or luxurious knitwear. CONTINUED >

Sweaters are bigger, softer and more versatile than ever. Cashmere crewnecks, oversized cableknit pullovers and lightweight merino turtlenecks serve as foundational wardrobe pieces. Cardigans are moving beyond basic layering and are often styled as standalone tops with tailored trousers or midi skirts. The focus remains on quality fibers and timeless construction rather than novelty details. Dresses also embrace practicality without sacrificing style. Long-sleeve midi dresses in jersey, knit and lightweight wool offer easy sophistication for work and weekends. Slip dresses continue into cooler months when layered beneath oversized cardigans or structured blazers, proving that summer favorites do not need to be packed away just yet. Footwear follows the season’s practical luxury theme. Knee-high boots remain a standout, especially in rich leather or suede. Sleek riding boots pair beautifully with dresses and skirts, while block-heeled styles complement wide-leg trousers. Loafers continue their popularity with thicker soles and refined hardware, and fashion sneakers remain everyday essentials. Pointed-toe flats also make a notable return, offering an elegant alternative to heels without sacrificing comfort. Accessories are understated but intentional. Large structured handbags replace tiny novelty purses, reflecting a desire for pieces that are both stylish and functional. Belts define oversized blazers and dresses, while sculptural gold jewelry adds warmth against autumn’s deeper palette. Scarves also return as statement accessories, from oversized wool wraps to silk neck scarves and textured cashmere styles. Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of Fall 2026 is its emphasis on individuality. Instead of dictating one must-have item, the season encourages personal interpretation. Mixing vintage finds with contemporary tailoring, investing in well-made basics and choosing accessories that reflect personal style all contribute to wardrobes that feel authentic rather than trend-driven. As temperatures cool and layers return, Fall 2026 reminds us that the most stylish wardrobes are not necessarily the most complicated. They are built on exceptional fabrics, flattering silhouettes and timeless design. This season, dressing well is less about following every trend and more about finding confidence in clothes that truly fit your life.
