Proud to Be a Lady

Hello to the wonderful women of Edina,

You are the mothers, friends, sisters, aunts, wives, partners, and core of our community. We thank you for all you do, and this month, we are proud to present our annual Ladies issue.

I’m lucky that the women in my life have set the bar high, and have shared much wisdom over the years. I truly understand what it takes to earn the respect and trust of those around me.  I am also grateful and blessed for the strong women in my circle. To be able to laugh, cry and learn from them as we all continue to strive to be the best we can be every day, is a true gift.

There is so much goodness and talent to cover, but in this issue, we will shed some light on just a few female-owned and operated businesses we think you might enjoy.

Emily, Kailee and Anna of the Skin Scene team, share history, nursing backgrounds and personalizing the skin care journey. Whether you are looking to do light maintenance or need a long-term strategy, they will help guide you to results. Denise, owner of New Perspectives Pilates and Pelvic Health, is helping women in the community from a holistic view. She knows the path to healing is not easy, but she has the expertise to help with multiple patient challenges in her calming and private studio.

Pura Vida Orthodontics owner, Dr. Alisa Madson talks about education, cutting edge technology and breaking through in her industry to become a medical professional with two Twin Cities locations.

If you are looking for a unique and personalized gift for Mother’s Day, Susan at Framing Solutions can help you get creative! Bring in your art and liven up your space while commemorating something special.

We spoke with Molly Toutant, a local sixth grader at South View Middle School who is playing the role of Anna in the Children’s Theatre Company production of Disney’s Frozen . It’s such a joy to see up and coming young women living their dreams and starting their journey in life.

Stay strong and proud ladies, and have an amazing May!

Transforming Beauty with Compassion and Expertise

At The Skin Scene Aesthetics in Edina, beauty intertwines with compassion, creating a space where each client’s journey to confidence unfolds at their own pace. Established in October 2020, The Skin Scene is more than a destination for aesthetic transformations; it’s a retreat where skilled hands create personalized experiences that highlight the beauty within. At the helm of The Skin Scene is Emily Feine, RN, and Kailee Violett, RN, BSN, childhood acquaintances turned friends and business partners, whose camaraderie and shared vision have set a new standard in the aesthetics industry. Both alumni of the esteemed AESTHETIQ Institute, they possess extensive training in cosmetic injections, light therapies and innovative facial treatments. This foundational education laid the groundwork for their unique approach, one that is comprehensive and all-encompassing, focusing on the whole face rather than one specific area.

For Kailee, the world of aesthetics offered a canvas to merge her kind nature with a newfound passion. Her journey began in the caregiving industry, inspired by her autistic brother. "I actually started out as a personal care assistant for him, which is where I found my love of helping others thrive,” she shares. “I then went into nursing in 2016.” Adding aesthetics to her career, Kailee uplifts people not just physiologically, but emotionally and aesthetically.

Emily, who left nursing to focus on The Skin Scene alongside her roles as a devoted mother and photographer, brings a creative and empathetic touch to the practice. Her commitment to enhancing clients’ confidence is evident in her meticulous attention to detail.

“I adore what we do,” Emily says. “Clients leave our office happy inside and out.”

The dynamic duo was later joined by Anna Kelly, RN, in 2022, affectionately dubbed as the "heart and soul" of their business. Her addition to the team has only strengthened their resolve to provide an unparalleled aesthetic experience. Anna's warm demeanor and expertise in injectables and skin treatments resonate deeply with clients, solidifying their trust and loyalty.

Together, these talented women have created a comforting and welcoming atmosphere, where every client is valued and every detail matters. The clinic's philosophy pivots on listening attentively to clients' goals and creating a personalized plan that combines various treatments to promote lasting beauty and wellness.

Kailee Violett

By offering injectables, skin services and laser treatments, clients embark on a metamorphic journey that may begin with a wrinkle-reducing Botox or filler session and be seamlessly supported by a SkinPen Microneedling treatment or chemical peel for enhanced complexion and anti-aging benefits.

The essence of The Skin Scene lies in their dedication to fostering genuine connections with their clients. It’s not a rush to get in and out; rather, it's an invitation to engage in thoughtful dialogue, allowing the team to offer recommendations and advice tailored to each individual's unique facial structure and personal aesthetic story.

“We love sitting down with recurring clients to hear their life updates,” Emily explains. “It’s also so fun being able to meet new clients and honestly make friends,” Kailee adds.

In this no-pressure environment, clients are empowered to make choices that align with their visions of beauty, each decision backed by the knowledgeable guidance of professionals who genuinely care.

With their immense passion for beauty and devotion to others, Emily, Kailee, and Anna are not just enhancing faces at The Skin Scene Aesthetics—they're building self-esteem. Their approach ensures that clients not only see their best selves reflected in the mirror but carry that confidence into every aspect of their lives.

A HOLISTIC HAVEN

DENISE SMALL'S NEW PERSPECTIVE ON HEALTH AND WELLNESS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE

Patients navigating the modern health care system often find themselves feeling incomplete after treatment, left with gaps in their journey toward true wellness. While countless clinics focus solely on one aspect of recovery, few adopt a holistic approach that integrates the physical, emotional and mental dimensions of health.

Denise Small

Noticing this fragmented structure, Denise Small of Edina established New Perspective Pilates and Pelvic Health in 2024.

“I wanted to create a place where patients can embark on healing free from the constraints of traditional care,” she explains. “A place where we heal the mind, body and soul all together.” Denise's unique qualifications and diverse background inform her innovative approach, blending expertise in both Pilates and physical therapy.

Her path to becoming a leading voice in holistic healing began with a storied career as a professional ballet dancer, gracing stages at the Kansas City Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera and the New Chamber Ballet in New York City. During this period of her life, Pilates became an essential tool for maintaining strength and stamina—keys to her performance and longevity in such a physically demanding field. This early adoption and mastery laid the foundation for her subsequent vocation as a Pilates instructor, certified through Balanced Body University in 2005.

Transitioning from ballet to physical therapy, Denise earned her doctorate from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2016, eager to delve deeper into the nuances of the human body. After graduating, she specialized in pelvic health—an often overlooked but vitally important area, particularly for individuals grappling with issues such as sexual wellness, urinary leakage or chronic constipation.

“These conditions often necessitate a more sophisticated approach beyond conventional therapy,” Denise explains. “Treating complex, chronic pain requires different tools, which I have the experience in both as a patient and provider.”

What sets Denise apart is her commitment to integrating trauma-informed techniques, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment where patients can heal at their own pace.

This emphasis on mental and emotional support, combined with her expertise in cranial sacral therapy and visceral mobilization, enables her to cater to the delicate intricacies of each patient’s nervous system—promoting a more calm and receptive state conducive to healing.

At New Perspective Pilates and Pelvic Health, using said techniques with a unique combination of Pilates and pelvic floor therapy underpins a powerful framework that addresses multiple health facets.

“Pilates, with its emphasis on core strength and breathwork, complements pelvic health treatment by fostering mindfulness and enhancing core stability,” Denise explains.

Within this marriage, the greater promise of Pilates is fully realized—not merely as an exercise regimen but as a path to holistic balance, resonating through every muscle fiber to imbue strength, flexibility, and emotional tranquility.

Denise’s innovative practice transcends the traditional divide between physical and mental therapy, allowing her clients to integrate all aspects of healing under one roof. By forging a space where the mind and body converge, Denise has created something truly unique—a sanctuary that empowers her clients to achieve full harmony.

Reflecting on the first year of her practice, Denise finds gratitude in the community she has cultivated—a refuge for those often overlooked by conventional medical settings. "I'm building a real community here," she shares. "It's reminiscent of that medicine woman in a village relationship, where people seek me out for healing everything. I've shared countless beautiful moments with patients, and I look forward to many more."

—DENISE SMALL

Denise invites new clients to approach her teachings with openness and readiness—ready to engage with many aspects of their health, be it mental, physical, or the conditions that have shaped their lives. “Whether postpartum, perimenopausal, or seeking understanding of chronic conditions, New Perspective is the ideal place to embark on a deep, transformative journey toward holistic health.”

PIONEERING SMILES AND BREAKING BARRIERS

With a love for both art and science, Dr. Alisa Madson seamlessly blends her passions through the meticulous craft of orthodontics. This fusion finds its expression in Pura Vida Orthodontics, a practice she proudly owns, with locations in Spring Lake Park, Lino Lakes, and St. Louis Park. Dr. Madson stands as a shining example of a female leader redefining success in an ever-evolving industry. Her journey into healthcare was driven by a profound desire to make a transformative impact on people's

lives, one smile at a time. For Dr. Madson, this mission is deeply rewarding, especially when she works with teenagers—individuals at a critical juncture in their development. During this time, the newfound ability to smile openly can dramatically enhance self-esteem and social connectivity. Reflecting on this, Dr. Madson notes, "If you're too shy to smile, it's really hard to connect with people," illustrating how orthodontics plays a pivotal role in personal transformation.

With over two decades in dentistry, including over 15 years focused in orthodontics, Dr. Madson has witnessed significant advancements in her field. Today, Pura Vida Orthodontics utilizes cutting-edge technologies to create personalized, efficient, and comfortable treatment plans. The incorporation of advanced diagnostic tools such as 3D imaging and modeling marks a shift from outdated methods, emphasizing precision and patient comfort. Dr. Madson proudly states, "We don't have those goopy impressions anymore and we can often do remote monitoring, meaning fewer trips into the office, and a lot of saved time for busy families.”

The Story of Dr. Alisa Madson
Dr. Alisa Madson

Pura Vida's philosophy extends beyond merely straightening teeth, advocating for a holistic approach to oral health. Dr. Madson emphasizes the intrinsic connection between oral health, facial structure, and overall wellness—a perspective that informs every personalized treatment plan. This commitment to preventive care and early intervention is embodied in initiatives like the Turtle Club growth monitoring program, designed to pinpoint optimal treatment times for children, ensuring healthier futures.

Dr. Madson’s leadership goes beyond her practice, reflecting the strides women have made in industries once dominated by men. As a trailblazer, she recalls the challenges faced due to gender disparities, which tested her resolve. "The industry has really shifted into being closer to a 50/50, male/female split, but for a while, it was traditionally male," she remarks. Her experiences underscore the importance of self-advocacy—a lesson that inspired her to establish Pura Vida Orthodontics. By carving her own path, Dr. Madson sought autonomy over her work environment, cultivating a predominantly female team that thrives on connectivity, empowerment, and mutual support.

“I didn’t set out to make my team mostly female; I hired the best candidate for each position. However, I’m grateful for how it turned out,” she shares, emphasizing the strength derived from personal and professional camaraderie. “I love my team, and we connect on

a personal level, leaning on each other in times of stress and happiness.”

Maintaining a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture remains a priority for Dr. Madson. Leading a team of orthodontists, including Dr. Josh Padavano, Dr. Lesley Chu, and Dr. Molly Erdman, the practice thrives in an environment that values camaraderie and community service. Through annual service projects—be it volunteering at the Humane Society or engaging with Feed My Starving Children—the team embodies a steadfast commitment to giving back.

Dr. Madson also dedicates herself to inspiring the next generation of female leaders in orthodontics and beyond.

"I love being a role model for younger girls and the industry at large," she says, embodying the power of passion and leadership. “A few years ago I was the president of the Minnesota Association of Orthodontists, and really enjoyed my time engaging with others.” Her journey is a testament to the achievements possible when art meets science and ambition aligns with altruism.

As Pura Vida Orthodontics continues to set the standard for excellence, Dr. Madson’s legacy grows. It is a legacy marked by transformed smiles, uplifted lives, and the expanding influence of women at the forefront of industry, leaving an indelible impact both within and beyond the world of orthodontics.

BRINGING YOUNG ANNA TO LIFE IN CTC'S FROZEN

Lights, music, action! As Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) continues its spectacular 2024-2025 season, audiences are in for a frosty treat with one of the original productions of Disney’s "Frozen: The Broadway Musical." This beloved tale, which has captivated millions around the globe, finds a fresh pulse here in Minnesota from April 15-June 15, presented with the signature magic that only CTC can provide.

Among the talented cast bringing this enchanting story to life is the delightful Molly Toutant, stepping onto the stages of CTC for the first time to portray "Young Anna." Molly, a sixth grader from Edina South View Middle School, alternates in the role with Matea Córdova Stuart, and together they're prepared to spark the wonder and warmth of Anna’s youthful exuberance.

Molly’s journey to the forefront of this production is a tale woven with talent, dedication and a love for the arts that began at a young age. From commanding the stage in productions like Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical” to capturing hearts in “The Addams Family” and “Annie,” Molly's performances have shown that her star is on a resolute rise.

Behind this impressive young performer is a family offering unwavering support, most notably her mom, Steph Toutant. In this special Q&A, we sit down with Molly and Steph to delve into Molly's adventures on stage and the excitement of being part of this landmark production.

WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN THEATRE?

I’ve always loved singing and acting. When I was three, I saw my first show at the Children’s Theatre, “The Grinch,” and I was like “whoa, I want to do this.” I started doing theater camps and smaller productions, and things went from there.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE ROLE?

When “Frozen” came out, I would watch it almost every day and I would sing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" 24/7. I’ve always enjoyed the movie and thought Anna was such a fun character. I’m 12 now, so when this role popped up, I knew it would be perfect for me.

WHAT WAS THE AUDITION PROCESS LIKE?

This is my first big production, so I didn’t know what to expect. Auditions started last July and I had to sing some songs, dance and eventually had like three call backs.

HOW DID YOU REACT WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU GOT THE ROLE?

I freaked out. It was about a month later, in late August, that they called and said I was Young Anna and in the Ensemble. I was shocked and jumped up and down. I was really, really excited.

STEPH, HOW DID YOU REACT?

Oh my gosh. We are just so proud of Molly. She's always been super theatrical and she sings non-stop every day. When this role came up, she really wanted to do it. She's such a happy go lucky person and it's really fun that she gets to act that out on stage as Anna. Molly and her have a lot in common. We’re so excited for her.

IN THE FUTURE, DO YOU WANT TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ACTING/THEATER?

Absolutely. I would love to do more shows at the Children’s Theatre because it’s already been such a great experience. When I get older, I would love to do more acting in movies, musicals and such.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I play volleyball. I do track. I hang out with my family, friends and my dog.
