This magazine exists because Alexandra said ‘Yes.’

Now, new cities are waiting for someone to say yes. What if it was you?

Awaken That Inner Child

Remember when you were a kid and exploring was basically on the to do list every day? It was so easy to make up adventures and ask new friends to play. There was a certain joy and naivete in life. I don't believe those days have to end just because you grow up. Times might never be the same, but it never hurts to keep an open mind for exploration with a childlike heart.

July is our explore issue, and here at Edina Lifestyle, we would like to encourage you to branch out and seek new adventures with friends and family. If you are sticking around the metro, Paradise Charter Cruises offers trips on the Mississippi River overlooking the Minneapolis skyline or experiences out of Excelsior on Lake Minnetonka. From dinner cruises, to Taco Tuesday, or a Happy Hour excursion, they can make life fun out on the water.

Looking to make impactful changes in the community? Minneapolis Foundation talks about connecting donations with real organizations in need today. With so much to support, they can help guide and educate on where you might want to donate.

Food is oftentimes the center of gathering and celebration. We asked a few Edina restaurants in town what menu items are most coveted and loved. Mothership Pizza has some great topping combos, specialty cocktails, and new patio seating. Red Cow continues to deliver on great burgers, appetizers, and beverages. And, Starling boasts a variety including steak tacos and Thai chicken salad. You can't go wrong with any of these casual and family friendly spots.

DIY projects can be simple and fun, especially when it comes to entertaining. Spruce up your ice cubes this summer with an edible flower recipe. Something pretty and unique!

Obviously, there is so much to explore beyond the pages of this publication, but we hope to provide a few ideas to pack into the short and busy summer season!

Stay young at heart,

July 2025

EXPLORE THE SUMMER OFFERINGS FROM PARADISE CHARTER CRUISES

Ready, Set, Sail

ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PARADISE CHARTER CRUISES

Whether drifting along the expansive Mississippi or relaxing on the tranquil lake waters, every cruise promises exceptional sights and memorable moments.

Paradise Charter Cruises invites travelers this summer to embark on unforgettable journeys across two stunning Minnesota waterways: the majestic Mississippi River and the scenic Lake Minnetonka. Guests can select from an array of curated cruise experiences, each available on either route, offering spectacular views and unique amenities. Whether drifting along the expansive Mississippi or relaxing on the tranquil lake waters, every cruise promises exceptional sights and memorable moments.

TWO ICONIC ROUTES

Departing from Bohemian Flats Park, the Mississippi River cruises navigate the largest river system in North America right from its Minnesota origin. This route immerses passengers in breathtaking landscapes, including the southern trails of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, the U of M Campus riverfront, and iconic landmarks such as the 35W Bridge, St. Anthony Falls, and the historic Stone Arch Bridge. Travelers also enjoy stunning downtown Minneapolis skyline views as the boat journeys through the lower St. Anthony Falls Lock system.

On the other hand, departures from the Port of Excelsior lead guests onto the vast and serene waters of Lake Minnetonka. Named from the Sioux “Minne” (water) and “Tonka” (big/great), this lake offers picturesque scenery combined with engaging narration that reveals the rich history and charming stories behind the area.

Both routes provide full service cash bars and casual snack options, enhancing the cruising experience. Note that cruise routes may adjust due to weather and water way schedules.

PUBLIC CRUISES

Paradise Charter Cruises’ summer lineup offers something for every kind of traveler eager to explore Minnesota’s finest waterways in style and comfort. Whether seeking relaxation, celebration, or adventure, the perfect cruise awaits.

AFTERNOON SIGHTSEEING

For a leisurely entry into the wonders of either the Mississippi or Minnetonka Lake, the Afternoon Sightseeing provides narrated tours at just $25 per person, with children under two admitted free. “Passengers can relax while gaining insight into local landmarks and natural beauty,” Dave Lawrance, owner of Paradise Charter Cruises, adds. Concessions such as corn dogs, chips, and drinks are available onboard. This cruise runs daily in the summer months.

Full bar service ensures a festive atmosphere as passengers relish great food and scenic views.

This experience offers a romantic ambiance and gourmet dining, coupled with the captivating water sights, providing an unforgettable night.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY HAPPY HOUR PIZZA

Arguably the most popular offering, these cruises run midweek for $45 per person and feature narrated tours alongside a pizza and salad buffet. GIVING advised

HOW THE MINNEAPOLIS FOUNDATION IS MOBILIZING DONORS TO TURN IDLE FUNDS INTO COMMUNITY ACTION

Across the country, more than $250 billion is sitting in Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)—money that has already earned donors a tax break but hasn't yet reached the very worthy communities and causes those donors care about. The Minneapolis Foundation is on a mission to change that.

“DAFs are powerful philanthropic tools, but they’re only impactful if they’re being used,” says Chris Beach, Senior Vice President of Philanthropic Services at the Foundation. “We’re focused on helping donors move from intention to action—to be generous now, not just someday.”

That’s the core message behind the Foundation’s new Give Advised campaign, which encourages DAF holders to take the next step: actually giving. “You probably got advice to earn that money,” the campaign declares. “Now get some to give it away.”

ACTIVATING DORMANT GENEROSITY

Unlike private foundations, which must distribute at least 5% of their assets each year, DAFs have no minimum payout requirement. That flexibility means many donors set aside funds with good intentions—but then leave them sitting idle, sometimes forgetting the money there or getting stuck in a giving rut, directing support to the same causes year after year without deeper engagement or reflection.

The Minneapolis Foundation sees an opportunity to change that dynamic by making it easier, more rewarding, and more personal for donors to connect with pressing local needs, and by reminding donors that a DAF isn't a donation until it's spent.

“We have a DAF problem," Beach explains. “They’re fantastic tools, but they’re underutilized. Too many institutions are sitting on these dollars without offering the kind of support donors need to turn giving into action. We’re changing that.”

As part of its long-term vision, the Foundation is working to more than double the dollars invested in the community over the next 10 years. It’s an invitation for both current and future donors to be bold, recognizing that the time for transformational giving is now.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MINNEAPOLIS FOUNDATION

GIVING WITH INSIGHT—AND IMPACT

A key part of the Foundation’s strategy is activating its philanthropic advisors to help individuals, couples, and families make the most of the “advised” part of Donor Advised Funds by clarifying what they care about and connecting them with organizations and opportunities that align with their goals.

“This is a pivotal moment,” says Beach. “With so many urgent needs in our communities—housing, food access, youth opportunity—we’re helping donors get closer to the issues and be part of real solutions.”

The nonprofit landscape is shifting rapidly, with policy and funding changes creating new challenges and opportunities to reimagine what’s next. That makes it more important than ever for donors to be agile, informed, and engaged—qualities the Foundation is uniquely positioned to support.

A NEW KIND OF SUPPORT

What makes the Minneapolis Foundation’s approach unique is not just its commitment to impact, but its commitment to more informed and connected donors. “We walk alongside our

donors,” Beach says. “We listen deeply. We help them understand what’s happening in the community and how their dollars can do the most good.”

This approach includes hosting events, learning sessions, and facilitated conversations with nonprofit leaders and changemakers that help donors discover the possibilities and personal connections they crave. It also means offering flexible tools—from research and family philanthropy resources to impact investing and long-term legacy planning—to help donors and their families give with confidence and clarity.

“Giving should feel meaningful. It should feel joyful,” says Beach. “And it should feel connected to something real.”

THE RALLYING CALL

The Foundation is not shy about asking donors to move resources off the sidelines. As one of the campaign ads declares, “A Donor Advised Fund is a philanthropic nest egg. Crack it.”

“This is the time,” says Beach. “This money was set aside to help others. Let’s make sure it does.”
