LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health is Everything Happy New Year Edina! I hope you are as excited for 2024 as I am. Even though the years whip by faster and faster, it is refreshing to welcome in a chance to start new goals and feel energized in all areas, including our health. Today, I feel like there is a better-concentrated effort on holistic health and making sure people are taking care of their mind, body, and soul, while attempting to create some balance. As I have aged, the realization has hit home that health truly is everything. It is the key to our quality of life and the baseline for all we are able to do and accomplish. In tandem with a start to some New Year’s resolutions, January is our Health & Wellness issue. We celebrate by taking some time to recognize a few local businesses, people, and practices that might make life a bit better in the new year. We toured the brand-new Discover Health fitness location on 50th and France, speaking to owner Maddie Ehrich on their approach to working out and the fabulous results clients are seeing in a condensed and efficient amount of time. So, if a busy schedule has been keeping you from carving out time for a workout, this could be a fabulous option. Dr. Sofia Lyford-Pike and Dr. Jenna Van Beck of the Hilger Face Center debunk some of the myths about Botox and fillers, and address when it might be the right time for alternative options. Their expertise, small team, and intimate setting make it the perfect place to consult with you on aging maintenance. We have also included a bit about plant-based eating, the basics, benefits, and steps to get started. If you have been contemplating changes in your eating habits, plants can provide great nutrition. Edina Skin Care’s owner, Cathleen Olson shares tips to a good winter skin care regimen that will help keep you protected and feeling good through the dry and cold months. There is so much more to overall health than what we can fit into these pages, but we hope it’s a kickstart to learn a bit more about options right here in our community. Our team wishes you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2024!

ENH A NCEMENTS ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE
While fillers and injectables such as Botox can produce beautiful results, many people don’t fully understand what they can and cannot do. Even with all the information available online, it’s difficult to know what may be right for their individual goals and needs. With treatments ranging from injectables to office procedures and surgery, it is important to learn the benefits and limitations of each. Here, we debunk some of the myths and get the straight facts from two highly skilled facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons at Hilger Face Center in Edina.

GET TAILORED TREATMENTS THAT FIT YOUR BEAUTY GOALS
“The first myth,” says Dr. Sofia Lyford-Pike, “is that fillers and Botox are interchangeable, and can address multiple concerns of the face. It can be hard to understand how each treatment works and how they can complement each other. Botox does not address volume and fillers don't get rid of active wrinkles." She explains that this confusion sometimes arises due to how products are marketed, and the minimal amount of information contained in ads. “You see before and after photos and see a significantly rejuvenated face, often advertising for one treatment, when multiple have been used synergistically. It’s important to give patients realistic expectations. I have seen ads for injectables showing faces that clearly had surgical intervention. Botox weakens facial muscles, keeping them from squeezing and forming lines on the skin. Fillers, on the other hand, add volume to an area.” “Another myth about fillers is that they can lift,” says Dr. Jenna Van Beck. “A lot of patients come in, put their hands up to their face, pull back and ask, ‘What filler can do this?’ Fillers cannot address skin laxity or the loss of elasticity in the skin. What patients are often looking for in this situation is a result obtained with a facelift or neck lift. Using filler to try to address skin laxity can often result in very unnatural results." While office-based procedures can be beneficial for this issue, they have limitations. “Patients can invest a lot of resources for a small amount of improvement to address this issue when, ultimately, surgical correction to remove excess skin will achieve the true outcome that many are seeking.”
"At Hilger Face Center, we try to consider all options for each patient, surgical and non-surgical." Fortunately, at Hilger Face Center, many enhancement options are available. “It makes us very unique because as cosmetic surgeons, we know where the line is between what fillers can do and when it is in the patient's best interest to consider surgical treatments,” says Dr. Van Beck. Adds Dr. Lyford-Pike, “It is important to point out that it's not one versus the other. In-office and surgical procedures complement each other wonderfully and address different things. Surgery can shift volume, address lax skin, improve facial contouring, and lift your eyebrows, but can't prevent wrinkles from forming like Botox and fillers can help fill volume in quick and easy ways that surgery can't." "There are many incredibly skilled injectors in multiple fields, from nurses to MDs, who really understand the different techniques, get great results and work together with surgical colleagues. At the Hilger Face Center, we try to consider all options for each patient, surgical and non-surgical," says Dr. Van Beck. When a patient comes in for a consult, whether it’s for filler, Botox or surgery, a full facial analysis is done. “We then listen to what their concerns are and the goals they're hoping to achieve,” she says. “We like to help patients learn about all the cosmetic approaches we are lucky to have these days. We discuss approaches to the multiple aspects of aging, from skin surface concerns to wrinkles, to volume to laxity; considering how a combination of injectables, skin resurfacing, and surgical procedures apply to each specific person. We try to go over what they can realistically expect with each of them and then tailor their treatment.” There is a different awareness today when it comes to maintenance and optimizing how you look for as long as you can.
“What we are seeing is a general increased awareness and consideration about facial health that was not common before. Patients are thinking about prevention and maintenance which is great. Often this starts with taking care of their skin with sunscreen, retinols and moisturizers, and then transitioning to peels, laser and Botox. So, there really has been a shift from waiting until things are so bad that you come in to optimizing as much as you can as you go." Working with younger patients, explains the doctors, also means that later on when they need or want to choose a surgical option, that relationship and trust have already been established. "At the Hilger Face Center, all of our staff are valuable resources to help patients navigate cosmetic treatments,” says office manager and past plastic surgery nurse, Priscilla O’Neill. ”In addition to our doctors, we have a small, tight-knit group of multi-faceted and skilled staff, with backgrounds in esthetic services, nursing, scheduling. Every staff member has a depth of knowledge and experience beyond what you'd expect, and was selected for what they add to the patient's experience." STRENGTH TRAINING BENEFITS BEYOND BIG MUSCLES ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK
Maddie Ehrich

"We offer time with an expert, educated trainer." As a college athlete, Maddie Ehrich of St. Louis Park suffered multiple knee injuries and afterward started looking for a great place to gain her strength back in the safest way possible. That place was Discover Strength in Chanhassen. After she recuperated, she became one of the studio’s exercise physiologists and then added on the role of general manager. Today, she is the owner of the Discover Strength franchise in Edina. “I've had personal experience being injured, enduring chronic pain and having a goal to get better physical function,” she says. “I’m passionate about helping other people to [reach their goals.]” Maddie appreciates the uniqueness of Discover Strength. “We offer time with an expert, educated trainer,” she says. “We're not just fitness junkies who get a weekend certificate. We have, at minimum, a bachelor's in exercise science and some of us have our master's as well. We are all certified exercise physiologists, which, simply
put, allows us to work with people with medical conditions and injuries.” She and her staff also focus on evidence-based training. “We never jump on the latest trend or fad in the industry. We only look at what the scientific research says. So if the research changes, then we change our approach.” Another difference that sets Discover Strength apart, says Maddie, is its efficiency. “A lot of gyms want you to come every day and spend a couple of hours there, but we found that busy professionals or busy parents just don't have that kind of time to waste on exercise that doesn’t work. So, at most, what we're going to ask for is twice a week for 30 minutes each time because that is what the research says is needed for the best results.” Private instruction with an exercise physiologist is offered, as well as small group workouts (up to three clients). Clients don't have to figure out their own group; they just sign up. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / E D I N A

Typically people come in to increase strength and change their body composition by gaining muscle and losing fat, but there are so many more benefits beyond that. “We do a lot of educating because while clients may be walking in the door for one thing, they soon realize that there’s something deeper and more important going on here,” says Maddie. “Things like increased mobility and fall prevention, improved cognitive function, increased bone mineral density, reduced cancer-related mortality risk, enhanced metabolic health, and decreased all-cause mortality risk are life-changing effects of this training.” Strength training also increases mood and self-esteem. “Especially during COVID, we saw mental health goals increase,” she says. “People wanted to feel better or help manage depression or anxiety. About 85 percent of Discover Strength’s client base went online during COVID and we still do about 300 virtual sessions a week. That works great for people who are traveling or stuck at home because they can keep up with their routines.” The studio offers many tailored routines for each individual’s needs. There are even special workouts for lower back pain, and each Discover Strength is equipped with a medical-grade low back strengthening machine. “Low back pain can affect 90 percent of people at some point in their lifetime, so we see many clients coming in just for that. Historically, medical professionals have said just rest your back or here's a painkiller, but the best thing to do is actually strengthen those muscles to alleviate some of that pain. We do that in a very therapeutic way.”
Another popular offering is the BOD POD for clients who are interested in improving body composition and/or just looking for a long-term tracking tool. It only takes about 15 minutes. “The BOD POD that we have access to is at our Chanhassen location,” Maddie says. “It's a pod that you sit in and it measures your fat mass and your lean muscle mass through air displacement. The reason that's good is because it gives us exact numbers versus what you see if you step on a scale, which is just going to give you one number. That number can’t tell us, ‘Did your fat mass go up or down? Did your muscle mass go up or down?’ From there our exercise physiologists use the BOD POD results to give you a protein goal and a calorie goal.” Even though the Edina location just opened this past fall, clients already number over 250. “We greet everyone by name to make it as personalized as possible. Training can be extremely easy and therapeutic or very intense depending on the person and their goals. Our youngest client is eight and our oldest is in their 80s.” In addition to starting a new business, Maddie recently got engaged and is busy planning a wedding. She also spends time pursuing her favorite new hobbies – horseback riding and showing horses in jumping competitions. “It's both a great stress reliever and a challenge,” she says. To find out more and to sign up for personal training, go to DiscoverStrength.com/Edina. 5041 France Ave S. Suite 1 | 612-836-2345

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
WI N T ER S K I N CA R E TI P S TO STAY M O I STU R I Z E D OWNER OF EDINA SKIN CARE SHARES WHAT WORKS FOR HER CLIENTS
Let’s face it: winter can be really hard on your skin. As the temperature drops and freezing winds become stronger, your skin barrier loses a lot of its natural lipids and ceramides that help keep you moisturized. This can cause dry skin and even lead to an increase in fine lines and wrinkles – which no one wants. That is why it’s very important in the colder months to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. But where do you start? Do you change your whole skincare routine or just the moisturizer? And speaking of moisturizers, what ones should you use? Determining what products to use and when can be a daunting task if you don’t have professional advice. So to help you – and us – we spoke with Cathleen Olson, owner of Edina Skin Care, to get the inside scoop on all things winter skin.
WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I USE TO STAY MOISTURIZED?
WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR SKIN AS THE WEATHER GETS COLDER?
Yes, the proper treatments will add muchneeded moisture to the skin. We do Hydrafacial and Diamond Glow, which are customer favorites as well as a Restorative Facial to add moisture and soothe the skin.
When the humidity drops, skin can become very dry. As we age the skin thins and produces less of the oils needed for it to retain moisture. When the skin is dry, lines and wrinkles are more noticeable which is usually harmless. When not cared for, dry skin may lead to Atopic Dermatitis (eczema) or even Infections. Dry, itchy skin can flake, crack, and even bleed if the barrier is compromised.
SHOULD I CHANGE MY SKINCARE ROUTINE DURING THE WINTER?
You should change your skin care regimen in the winter. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing. Use an ointment or cream instead of a lotion to trap moisture in the skin. Plug in your humidifier. Apply lip balm frequently throughout the day. Drink non-caffeinated beverages to help keep body tissues, including your skin, well hydrated. Keep bath and shower time to 10 minutes or less in warm, not hot water.
Look for a moisturizer with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. Use gentle, non-fragranced products.
SHOULD I STILL APPLY MY DAILY LAYER OF SUNSCREEN?
Absolutely. Not only will it protect your skin from free radical damage but it will lock in your moisturizer. I suggest using a physical block rather than a chemical. Less irritating to the skin.
ARE THERE ANY TREATMENTS I SHOULD GET THIS WINTER?
HOW DO I PREVENT CHAPPED LIPS?
Apply a lip balm several times a day and overnight. We have a nice selection of lip products to help keep them nice and moisturized.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EXFOLIATE?
I wouldn’t recommend any harsh exfoliators. I love using an enzyme to exfoliate [from time to time.] It’s very gentle and does a great job. To learn more about Edina Skin Care, visit edinaskincare.com. 7450 France Ave Suite 230 | 952-920-5521

the BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.
28
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows to you consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!
TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
