My friend gave me a card many years ago that read “Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess.”
Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others with whom we can share.
As individuals, we are lucky to have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Edina to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity and ignite our creativity.
That’s why with our annual Style issue, the team is touching upon a few things that encompass several different genres of style that make our community stand out.
From a true fashion perspective, J.H. & Sons, established in 1975, is opening in the Galleria and will carry on their third generation of classic clothing for men. OA Design Build shares what makes them unique from a design and build perspective, and Hirshfield’s gives tips on the latest colors for your home. If it’s something as simple as a haircut and color refresh, Juut Salon has moved to a new location, but their stylists remain talented and dedicated to helping you look your best.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely you!

Juut Salonspa is ready to make your day. The owner of the company, David Wagner, actually wrote a book called Life as a Daymaker. “What we’re taught and trained to do is to really understand who is in our chair, how to serve them and make their day,” says hairstylist Woody Theis, who has been with Juut for 37 years.
This company philosophy is reflected in the name itself. “Juut is a derivative of the Japanese word juuten, which translates to ‘uplift humanity and serve others,’” she says. Whether that’s accomplished by giving someone an awesome hairstyle, amazing color, or making their nails pretty, clients leave Juut with a sense of well-being and confidence.
When people walk into the salon, which moved to its new location in Edina last September, they’ll first sense a true atmosphere of luxury and comfort. All of the materials are sustainable and natural, and the design really brings the outdoors in. The many windows also offer a lovely view of Centennial Lake.
“It’s very luxurious, but we’re not pretentious,” says Woody. “We really do try to create an environment of comfort for our clients to make them feel at ease, taken care of and welcome. It’s just so inviting and beautiful.”
The main floor is the spa, nail and retail area where clients can purchase a full line of Aveda products. High-performing natural products such as Ultraceuticals and Jane Iredale makeup are also on display.
At the top of the grand stairway is the second level, which is the hair styling space. “The energy is completely different from the main floor,” she says. “Whereas the downstairs is really calming, the upstairs is vibrant and more of a party-like atmosphere.”
Hairstyles, explains Woody, are ways to express ourselves and show off our personal style. She’s noticing a trend towards more polished and shiny hair, and clients are requesting cuts that are layered (think updated 70s shag) and fuller. One of the reasons all the hairstylists at Juut undergo continuous training classes is to stay up-to-date in the industry.
One of the most requested services at the salon is hair color. Bryce SampsonBernstrom, one of Juut’s extensively trained color and hair extension specialists who is celebrating his 10-year anniversary with the company, loves how the trends change from season to season and year to year.
“Most of the trending colors for the fall are a lot warmer,” he says. “It was this
really cool, icy blond, but now everything’s a lot more buttery blonde, cinnamon, and bright auburn. The exception is midnight black, which is big too.”
With his in-depth training and experience, Bryce can expertly recommend the best color for clients by closely observing their personal style. He makes recommendations based on a client’s lifestyle, overall vibe, and desired maintenance.
Another interesting trend is pink, due to the Barbie movie, as well as baby blue, especially in the warmer months. These colors are great for people who are artsy or just want to have some fun.
Color extensions are also quite popular. “We have four different brands, so collectively about 180 colors,” says Bryce. “We have fusion keratin tips, tapeins, hand-tied and clip-ins.” With all these choices, he can customize exactly what’s right for each client.
While the salonspa has five locations in Minnesota, Juut can also be found in California and Arizona. All adhere to the day making philosophy of its owner.
It’s not often that a new paint collection arrives on the scene but when one does, it brings a fresh, trendy take on the classics that inspire us to update our surroundings.
The Hirshfield’s Color Is palette has been around for many years and was due for a refresh to bring in more of the trending colors. That can be a spendy undertaking for a local family-owned paint manufacturer like us so we added a separate collection of colors to update the palette by creating the Color Is…Refined collection.
Do we need another paint fan deck? Duh…of course! And beyond the perfectly appropriate reason of “Because,” here’s why:
• On-trend colors: The colors are fantastic, wonderfully muted & timeless hues that are very much on trend.
• Manageable size: It’s a stand-alone collection of 132 colors, meaning you can find the right neutrals and some on-trend accent colors in just this one palette.
• Go-to whites: There are 12 incredible whites/offwhites that help you narrow down the search for that perfect white. They are balanced with the undertones that work with current design trends.
• Luscious dark colors: There are sumptuous dark hues in this collection – deep gray greens, interesting dark blues, rich blacks, and some charming deep reds and purples.
A few favorites from the collection include:
• Silver Shine R061: A perfect blend of blue, gray, and green that is a dynamic and silvery livable neutral.
• Verde R058: A dark green with fresh lemon undertones to give it a bit of welcome brightness.
• Durum Wheat R052: A fresh and happy yet slightly muted yellow with hints of green that brings a bit of life to a front door.
• Space Dive R023: A classic bronzy deep gray. One of those go-to dark neutrals that have a bit of dramatic interest.
As customers explore Color Is…Refined , we thought we would offer some tips for choosing the perfect colors for your homes. Happy painting!
• When trying to decide on a color, first hold the swatch up vertically against a white sheet of paper – the color will appear different when held up on a wall and not viewed flat on a table. This will help you identify the undertones in the color. Pick 2-3 options and get a sample pint of paint for each (around $10), tagboard, and a chip brush (all available at Hirshfield’s.) Paint two coats and tape the tagboard up on various walls in the room or outside to get a true idea of the color.
• For the exterior, choose a color a bit darker than you think as the sunlight will wash out colors. For both interior and exterior, choose a grayer option of the hue you’re interested in – you may be surprised about how much color is still present and a grayer option isn’t as bold or overwhelming. For the truest color, your brand of color and paint should match; for example, a Hirshfield’s color should be made in Hirshfield’s paint. This is because the paint bases (cans of paint before color is added) and colorants work together to create the exact color. Trying to create a different brand’s color in another brand’s paint will most often not produce the color you’re looking for.
• Hirshfield’s has free color help available in their stores and they also have professional color consultants that, for a fee, can come to you and help you find colors that work with your décor. Learn more at Hirshfields.com
Few stores take their name and pedigree as literally as J. H. & Sons Clothier.
The store’s legacy started in 1975 with Jim Halberstadt opening a menswear shop called Halberstadt’s Men’s Clothiers. At 16, his son, Jeff, started selling suits and eventually opened his own locations under the same name. In 2014, Jeff introduced the J. H. & Sons Clothiers concept in Sioux Falls and later in Omaha.
Including Jeff’s son, Jaime, three generations of J. Halberstadts have been selling menswear across the Midwest for a combined 96 years. All are eager for Jaime’s three-yearold son, Julian, to be the fourth generation J. Halberstadt to join the family business.
I spoke with Jeff Halberstadt about their upcoming store in the Edina Galleria, and men’s fashion and formalwear in 2023.
Of course, the backbone of men’s formalwear is the suit. When it comes to the suit market, J. H. & Sons likes to lean Italian.
“Our stores like to use Italian goods in our styling,” Jeff says. “Their method of making clothing has much more handwork.” This attention to detail is what separates good suits from great ones, and that difference matters.
While Italian suits have always carried weight, times have changed since Jeff was selling suits as a teenager.
“The world seems like it’s gotten smaller,” Jeff explains. “Customers are exposed to many different things. They are seeing the types of brands we carry wherever they go. So we rely on excellent [service and personable interactions to keep people coming back.]”
However, J.H. & Sons do use the small world theory to their advantage. By making more and more Italian connections,
they can bring big brands to the Midwest – even if these vendors can’t find them on a map. Some of these brands include Canali, Corneliani, Eton and Brioni.
“Our vendors, especially some of the better Italian ones, definitely scratch their heads when I tell them the types of the things we are selling and where,” Jeff says. “They have never heard of Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota.”
For those looking to buy a new suit, Jeff admits it can sometimes seem intimidating, but his tip is to go to a store with a good reputation.
“Generally, in a better store, the salespeople have been in the business for quite some time and are very familiar with how a suit should fit,” he says.
Having been that salesperson, Jeff understands the gravity of being a good listener, knowing his product, and understanding what the client wants from the suit.
“What will the suit be used for, how often will it be worn, and what is the desired fit? The answers to these questions result in using different brands over others. It doesn’t do a salesman any good to sell a guy a suit that isn’t what he’s comfortable in.”
Another often overlooked aspect of store reputation is the quality of the tailor. “If it’s an off-the-rack suit, you have to make sure those tailors are the best because they can make the difference between just a good-looking suit and a great one,” Jeff says.
J. H. & Sons’ new store will open in the Edina Galleria this year, selling both formalwear and sportswear. For Jeff, that location is a dream come true.
“About 40 years ago, I [stood] in front of a men’s store in the Galleria and [dreamed of having] my own store there,” he says. “See you in Edina!”

Atelier MunroARCHITECT SHARES WHAT INSPIRES HIM
OA Design+Build+Architecture is a small, award-winning architecture firm that strives to bring creative solutions to homes that reveal the potential for form and function. We spoke with owner Michael Anschel about everything that inspires him, his Minnesotan roots and the firm.
OA IS DEVOTED TO GREEN BUILDING AND URBAN LIVING. WHAT INSPIRED THIS DECISION? We are indeed devoted to sustainable and resilient building practices. Prior to starting the company, I was on course to become a genetic engineer and had spent a great deal of

time studying ceramics for which a fair amount of chemistry is required. An interest and an awareness to better understand the products we use in the building industry resulted in selecting products that were less harmful and adopting protective strategies for the health of our clients and employees. As the field of building science evolved, there was a natural gravitation towards wanting a better understanding of how our buildings work, and the natural pursuit of a more efficient, durable and healthy home while also supporting the community.
ALTHOUGH EACH CLIENT MAY BE DIFFERENT, WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR EVERY PROJECT YOU WORK ON?
At OA, our goal is to tap into our client’s unique style and way of being. We want to craft a space that is tailored to how they live and interact with the space as well as reflect their personality. A focus on function might result in something efficient, a focus on form might result in something beautiful, and a focus on form and function might result in something that works well and is beautiful, but still lacks a soul. We want to design and build spaces that are alive with our client’s essence.
Our architecture and design process starts with an initial meeting to determine if the four of us; the client, the home, the budget and the OA Team are a good fit.
Then we enter the first phase of design called programming, where we measure the home, build a CAD model, check into local zoning ordinances and code provisions to perform a feasibility study. This is a key step in making sure that we’re not drawing something that can’t be built.
The next phase is schematic design, the fun part! We will sketch ideas to share with the client and get feedback starting with broad stroke general layout and form, and then slowly refine those, each revision building on the last, with greater detail. This iterative process is highly collaborative within our team and with our clients. We’re definitely not the kind of firm that sketches in a void and brings you three choices to choose from.
Once we’ve got the general concept nailed down, we do a preliminary estimate to ensure we’re on course. Then we move into material selections, mechanical systems design, and finally, we produce a full set of drawings for construction that are permit ready.
AS A NATIVE MINNESOTAN, WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING IN THE AREA YOU GREW UP IN?
I grew up in Linden Hills, back when it was a bunch of artists and teachers who had bonfires on the boulevard for Halloween. I went to South High, taking the 21A to and from school, and loving the rich diversity of the city. I didn’t realize it when I was young, but the diversity of housing stock also took root. From the Victorians to the Gothic Farmhouse, to the Arts and Crafts Bungalows to the Sears four-square. There is so much to love about working on these old homes, each of which has a slightly different story to tell.
What do you do for fun in Minneapolis and Edina?
What do I do for fun? We’re an outdoors family. Downhill skiing in the winter. Rock Climbing, kayaking, and hiking in the summer and fall. Concerts at the Harriet Bandshell as often as possible, biking on the grand rounds, movies in the park – there is a nearly endless list of things to enjoy in this area!
YOU LIVED IN CHINA AND JAPAN FOR SEVERAL YEARS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. HOW HAS IT SHAPED YOUR BUSINESS?
The influence of living in China and Japan is something that comes through my work in ways I’m not always aware of. There is definitely an awareness of nature and a desire to incorporate those patterns and textures into the projects. Learning the beauty of balance in asymmetrical design, which creates a much richer and timeless composition, the value of thirds, and when to relax and let the pencil wobble a little has been very important in my work. For a company, the values of patience, practice and working as a team in a non-competitive environment creates a positive collaborative culture. Work should be fun and playful -- it’s not all about stressing to the next deadline.
YOU’RE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN THE PROFESSIONAL BUILDING COMMUNITY. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Being active in the professional community is extremely important to us. I think it is our obligation to the industry to help nurture and grow our peers, and work to improve the industry as a whole. In 2002, when we helped lead the development of our state residential green building standard; GreenStar (which now serves the six-state area), we also went on to train hundreds of builders, remodelers and architects on the principles of green building and how to successfully navigate a certification. It changed the trajectory of building in this state and the ease of building green.
ONE OF YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE IS BEING A CELLIST – TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT.
Music is a big part of my life. I’ve been playing cello for 44 years, and during COVID, the music room, surrounded by guitars, became my home office. Music is just another language. It has movement, texture, accents, and tells a story. The lines we draw on paper are similar, and the experience of entering and exploring an OA home should have those same qualities. The vibration of the strings that evokes emotion can also be felt walking through a beautiful space. At an open house recently, someone came up to me after having toured the home and said, “There are so many things taking place, so many colors, so many lines, so many finishes – and yet they are all working together. It is like walking through a symphony!” It was one of my favorite compliments because it captured so perfectly what we are trying to do.
