Life Can Be an Adventure

Beep! Beep! Who’s got the keys to the Jeep?

Thinking back upon my EHS days, the Jeep Wrangler seemed to be an iconic vehicle for this city. It could even have been considered a second mascot to the hornet. But it was and still is most definitely a sign of summer. I remember having Jeep fever as a kid, and it still makes me smile to see them buzzing around Edina. And, whether you’re driving one or riding in one, it’s a fun mini adventure.

Hopefully, you will be making lots of your own adventures this month with family and friends including trips to the lake, grabbing ice cream, catching a movie, walking and biking our beautiful spaces, and securing your spot at the annual July 4th parade. Starting at 10 a.m. this holiday, it will be followed by fireworks at Rosland Park later that evening.

If you’re heading over to the 50th and France area, we will have a new outdoor patio option! Coalition is building a 50-seat outside space for guests to enjoy the beautiful and precious summer weather. With fresh food and drink options, you can create your own dining experience adventure close to home.

If you want some wind in your hair, and to explore a bit outside of Edina, you can create a fun family or friends adventure with Paradise Charter Cruises. Choose from Lake Minnetonka or the Mississippi River for long or short-cruise options this summer and all the way into the fall season. Their themes such as Taco Tuesdays and happy hour pizza cruises on the water can spice up the normal weekend or weeknight routine.

Finally, our team met up with Dr. Anderson and Dr. Nahan of Anderson Dental. Many might consider going to the dentist an adventure in itself, but this skilled team helps you feel just like family. With a hometown and personal approach matched with the latest and greatest in technology (including Invisalign, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, orthodontics, and more), the Anderson Dental Team is a solid option for the whole family.

Lastly, we wanted to share some new summer products for pool, beach, or lakeside carried by local favorite Serge + Jane. It’s oftentimes the little things that can spark a good time anywhere.

Cheers to living in all of our fabulous community moments!

A PLACE TO GATHER

Originally Pearson’s Edina Restaurant, a landmark at 50th and France on the border of Minneapolis and Edina, the newer and more modern Coalition Restaurant is also making its mark. The name of the restaurant, which has another location in Excelsior, reflects the partnering of many different local food and beverage vendors to create a special dining experience. The term coalition also means a gathering place, which is the goal of its casually sophisticated atmosphere.

“We’re tucked away in a very nice neighborhood that has all kinds of shopping,” says general manager, Kevin Fraley. “It’s also one of the more affluent neighborhoods in Minnesota and it’s been revamped to try to attract a little bit more of a younger generation. So, we have a lot of young families living in the neighborhood now.”

Coalition Restaurant, he says, can be whatever you want it to be. “It’s a good stopping place to have a quick cocktail at the bar and then go back to shopping. You can stop in for a burger, a chicken sandwich or a salad, and a glass of wine or beer. Bring the kids in for a family lunch or dinner. Or, come in and celebrate a special event.” Its Chef, Eli Wollenzien, is known for his passion for cooking diverse and inspired entrees.

“We have wonderful entrees with sea bass, halibut and New York strips, plus a few great pasta dishes,” says Kevin. The eatery does quarterly

specials, and one of the most popular dishes, he says, is the Miso Sea Bass with a Wild Mushroom Risotto.

The restaurant also has a very extensive wine list and bourbon selection. “During the winter, we’re kind of a warm bourbon bar, whereas in the summer we turn into a light, crisp wine restaurant that also has some amazing tequilas.”

Patrons will be able to enjoy these foods and beverages on its new patio slated to open in early July. It’s a covered space with seating for 50 and beautiful landscaping. “We want to create a really special patio,” he says. “There, people won’t be sitting in full sun, plus, since we’re not facing the road, they’re not going to hear all the traffic and noise, so it’s more secluded and peaceful. The landscaping just adds to that feeling of serenity. We’ll have built-in heaters as well so we can probably use it until mid-October.”

One big change the restaurant has made coming out of COVID is a revamping of its staff. “I’ve been running restaurants for over 30 years and we’ve brought in a relatively new staff of people who have worked for me and have experience,” says Kevin. “We now have a very professional staff and customers can trust in the service.”

He adds, “Our bar manager, Ben, has been here since day one, so he knows a lot of people in the neighborhood. Since I’ve taken over, we

haven’t had any turnover so when people come in, they see familiar faces.”

Along with private dining, Coalition also offers a semi-private area in the bright and airy sunroom that can seat 24 people. “We sometimes do cocktail and happy hour events in there,” says Kevin. “We set up hearty appetizers and cocktails and people just mingle. It’s a good after-work place to go.”

FROM

When Richard Anderson graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, he never imagined that after a tour in the Vietnam War and a career switch, he would go on to own a successful, comprehensive dentistry practice for over 35 years and counting.

“Younger me was set on engineering, but a year out of college my deferment went away and I was drafted into the Air Force,” Richard says. “I spent two out of my four-year stint in Vietnam itself. I was a different person when I came back and wanted to change my life’s focus.”

engineering dentistry TO A STORY ABOUT LIFE CHANGES AND FINDING PASSION
Deciding to combine his previous education with medicine, he earned a master’s degree in biomedical engineering and later, a doctorate in dental surgery in 1979.  He graduated top of the class.

“When I was studying biomedical engineering, I was fascinated that dentistry is basically oral engineering,” Richard says. “It fit well with my background and dentistry became my passion. It was a great transition because it allowed me to focus on something entirely different and put things in the past behind me.”

In late 1979, Richard began practicing dentistry, but his thirst for knowledge hadn’t stopped. He still wanted to learn more about orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry and all areas of care.

“I didn’t want to limit myself to one specialty,” he says, “but rather offer complete oral health care. So, I continued to work for another clinic and did a lot of post-graduate training.”

During this time, Richard was also a clinical associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in the Advanced General Dentistry Program, a post-graduate residency for dentists to obtain additional experience and education beyond dental school. He did this for 10 years.

“Back then I was juggling so many things and it made me realize that it was time to solely focus on helping people feel better about their smiles,” Richard says.  “So, I chose to take a leap.”

In 1985, he opened Anderson Dentalcare at 50th & France in Edina and after over 35 years of business, it remains a community staple.

“We use an integrated approach that we call COR or Comprehensive Oral Restoration and I believe that is why people love us here,” Richard says.  “We do it all, including cleanings, orthodontics, teeth whitening, implants, full mouth reconstruction, TMJ therapy, and gum disease and root canal treatments.  This means we don’t have to send people all over town for different specialists. Everything is under one roof.”

But wait, what about that engineering degree?

Richard says this education didn’t go to waste; In fact it has made his practice better because it enables him to understand the science behind the materials and techniques he uses.

“I tend to look at how teeth function mechanically,” he says.  “Our mouth is an apparatus that has to be stable, maintained, and working well for a healthy lifestyle.  If anything breaks down, then the whole thing starts to unravel, resulting in horrible pain, and difficulty eating, smiling and being around other people.

“So, when we first see a patient, we look at them holistically in all areas of dentistry. We come up with a comprehensive plan to get them smiling and feeling their best. For example, with children, we can intercept growth and development problems, helping them grow into beautiful smiles while eliminating tooth extraction for braces. For all patients, we want to keep teeth for a lifetime rather than having to get dentures down the road.”

From children to adults, every patient that walks through the doors of Anderson Dentalcare is made to feel comfortable and respected.

“We try to be accepting from the very start,” Richard says. “We want to be open, receptive and encouraging. We offer conscious sedation for those who are especially nervous or fearful. All walks of life come to us, and we accommodate them as best we can. We want to provide hope for our patients.”

He continues, “Recently we finished full mouth reconstruction for our patient, John. He came to us with anxiety and fear from treatment in the Navy. He also had pain and broken teeth. We used conscious sedation for his appointments, so he slept through his treatments, and by using implants, oral surgery and crowns/bridges, we gave him a new

smile, a new bite and a new outlook.  John wants to spread the word about modern dental care.”

Over the years, the Anderson Dentalcare team has grown and now includes associate Dr. Matthew Nahan, assistants Cathy and Shannon, hygienists Katie, Jordyn and Jamie, treatment coordinator and hygienist Danielle, and scheduling coordinator Laurie.

“Our team is a family of co-workers that cares, supports and enjoys each other, bonding with regular staff meetings, continuing education sessions, birthday parties in the office as well as celebratory events outside the office,” Richard says. “We recently celebrated the births of two boys, one to Dr. Nahan and one to Katie. Soon we will have a third celebration for Jordyn’s baby due in June. We are growing the work family.”

Richard’s own three children are all grown up now, but he has eight grandchildren to make up for it.

“My wife Beth and I have been married for 53 years, which might give you a clue as to my age, but I stopped having birthdays long ago,” he says with a wink. “We are a very close family and enjoy being together a great deal.  We take family vacations skiing in the mountains, walking and playing on sunny beaches, and spending time at our cabin at Lutsen.”

As the 40th anniversary comes up for Anderson Dentalcare, Richard says he wouldn’t have changed a thing about his career.

“I love what I do, and I love my business,” he says. “I get to help people smile and feel good about themselves – there is nothing more rewarding than that.”

PARADISE CHARTER CRUISES

SIGHTSEEING BOAT CRUISES, SCENIC TOURS, AND PRIVATE CHARTERS ON LAKE MINNETONKA AND THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

LOCAL

ARTICLE BY TRACY MCDERMOTT

Two tickets to paradise. That Eddie Money oldie hummed through my mind all morning as I cheerily dressed for a Sunday brunch aboard Paradise Charter Cruises’ boat on Lake Minnetonka. The weather was warm, and I was ready for a good time out with my husband.

Free parking was found behind the shops along Water Street, which is just a short walk from the Port of Excelsior. As I surveyed the row of docked charter boats, I was delighted to discover we’d be sailing aboard a mini cruise ship, the Destiny II. She’s an impressive sight: a modern boat with all the elegance of a full-sized cruise ship. Two decks encased in sparkling clean glass lend an open, airy feel, and she’s outfitted with an understated nautical decor ideally suited to a cruise on Minnesota’s swankiest lake.

We waited to board in a queue of ‘happyto-be-here’ Minnesotans gathered to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, engagements, and graduations. An attentive and cheerful crew ushered us aboard just a few minutes before our scheduled departure time.

Once aboard we chose a top-level table surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, safe from wind and water. An open-air deck for cruising and dining sat adjacent to the dining room so we could easily step out for a fresh lake breeze.

Our cruise departed sharply at 11 a.m. for a pleasant glide across the lake’s gently rolling water. An attentive crew fulfilled drink orders from the onboard bar as we got underway so we could experience firsthand how the other half lives. Mimosas, anyone?

While we sipped our drinks we sailed past yachts, sailboats, lakeside mansions, the occasional duck family, and a heap of natural beauty. Captain Ed discretely spilled secrets that only lake insiders know – a who’s who of famous residents and jaw-dropping real estate facts. In between his brief comments, we enjoyed gazing at spectacular views that are only visible from the lake itself.

The sun appeared midway through our cruise and the surface of the lake lit up like a sea of glittering diamonds. So beautiful. It was a perfect chance to stretch and snap a few envy-inducing photos for the folks back home.

Just as I returned to my table, we were invited to partake in a generously laid brunch buffet. I follow a restricted diet and was pleased to find many suitable gluten-free dishes to choose from: fluffy and moist scrambled eggs with various condiment toppings, orange-glazed ham, turkey sausage links, seasoned potatoes, and fresh fruits. My husband sampled the full array of buffet items mentioned plus muffins, coffee cake, and their signature dish, a scrumptious cinnamon French toast bake. ‘Deliciously stuffed’ was the unanimous verdict once we pushed ourselves back from the table.

The evident care taken by every member of the staff really made a good impression on me. All of our servers were attentive and seemed to really enjoy their work. We observed the captain calm the worries of a woman seated nearby who was afraid of water, slip seamlessly into pleasant banter with another guest, then discreetly dispose of trash on a table as he completed various duties, all without a ruffle to his pleasant demeanor.

Our cruise continued for another blissful, beautiful half hour after we’d finished our breakfast. Just as the Port of Excelsior came into view, a Rolling Stones tune began quietly playing over the onboard sound system. I had to laugh at the timing of the song. You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need. The past two hours with Paradise Charter Cruises were exactly what I wanted and exactly what I needed on this Sunday morning – a micro vacation from my everyday life. If you ask me, there is not a more ideal or affordable getaway in the Twin Cities than this. Hope to meet you aboard sometime!

Paradise Charter Cruises offers sightseeing boat cruises, scenic tours, and private charters on Lake Minnetonka and the Mississippi River. Their yachts are ideal for corporate events, department parties, team-building excursions, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, sweet sixteens, bar and bat mitzvahs, baby showers, family reunions, and more ! twincitiescruises.com
