As I think about the month of February, I’m loving the fact that we only have a few months left of the extreme cold until spring! Winter can be a fun time for exploring and appreciating what we have in our own backyard, and this issue is all about loving local. And although we would love to cover it all, we connected with just a few people and businesses that you might want to check out. With the start of a new year, maybe you are making some changes and getting organized. We spoke with Cassie Sanetra of State Farm Insurance on what she recommends when looking for a provider and how the details really do matter. Working with an agent is so much more personal and customized. If a new vehicle is on your horizon, we checked out two new models from Jaguar Land Rover Minneapolis including the 2023 Land Rover Defender and the 2023 Range Rover Sport – which now has more passenger seating for carting the whole family in comfort and style. The team also checked out Edina Coffee Roasters (founded by Edina locals Zach and Sara). If you have an event, you can book their coffee cart for great caffeination and connection. Have you stopped into the Douglas Flanders & Associates gallery on 50th yet? They have an extensive and beautiful collection for art in your home or office. Doug has been an art connoisseur in the Twin Cities since the 1970s. Another fun stop is SENTi, started by Jen Knoch, which boasts everything to do with indulgence and luxury products that elevate the sensory rituals of your daily life. Last but not least, if you’re looking for a date night for Valentine’s Day or ANY day, Coalition has a fabulous menu, a great wine and drink selection, and has proved it’s a staple in the neighborhood. If you're needing a quick organizational fix, we have short tips on how to improve your closet. But, for the real overhaul and renovation, leave it to the experts at Closet Factory. As always, we’re loving everything about Edina, and look forward to seeing you out and about this spring!

Let an Expert Be Your Guide Choosing the Right Insurance for You and Your Family

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Growing up, Cassie Sanetra had no desire to go into the insurance industry. That’s what her mother and stepfather did, and she wanted to do something different. However, while in college, she helped her mother at her State Farm office in Columbia Heights and it changed her way of thinking. “I ended up loving it,” she says. “I got licensed, helped my mom open a second location in Minneapolis, and ran and managed that.” Today, Cassie has been an insurance agent for 15 years, and in 2021, she opened her own State Farm office in Richfield. “Working with State Farm, seeing how it operates and the kind of values they have, I never thought about looking at another company,” she says. State Farm offers a large range of personal and business policies. Since these policies can vary greatly and small details can make big differences, it’s critical to choose the best one for your needs and lifestyle. An agent can help with that. “When people buy coverage online, they might think they're getting the right policies,

but more times than not, there are gaps in coverage,” says Cassie. “Just like with anything in life, it's not always good to go for the cheapest option. It's important to me to help educate customers or prospective customers on what insurance is and what it covers, and to give them all the information they need to make an educated decision for themselves and their families.” In order to determine the best homeowner’s policy, she asks a lot of questions and uses a tool that State Farm has developed that calculates replacement costs from an insurance standpoint. “I'm not just collecting an address. I need you to explain what it's like - what makes up your house. What's on the inside, what type of flooring, cabinets and countertops do you have, how many bedrooms and bathrooms – I really dive deep.” This way, Cassie can find discounts for customers. “Roofing materials are important and can get you additional discounts. If you have a basement, I want to know if it's finished or unfinished,

“When people buy coverage online, they might think they’re getting the right policies, but more times than not, there are gaps in coverage. It’s important to me to help educate customers.”

and if you have a sump pump. Do you have an alarm system? We have a lot of older homes built in the early 1900s, and if the homeowners have done any updates, such as electrical updates, there are big discounts for that too.” For car insurance, she says the major component that needs to be considered is the liability limit. “Each state has its own minimum, which is typically very low,” she says. “We look at the bigger picture because we're protecting everything, not just your vehicle. If you're in a bad car accident, your assets are now at stake if somebody sues you because you injured them or worse. You need to make sure those limits and coverages are appropriate to protect you.” Again, an agent can also find you discounts on car insurance by asking the right questions. “I need to know, for example, how many miles you drive because if you don't drive very much, there's a discount.” Bundling is another way to save money. “If you have home and auto with us, you get a bundle discount of 35% on your home and 15% on your auto,” says Cassie. “If you have more than one car, you get a multi-car discount.” It’s also smart, she explains, to have one insurance company and one agent for multiple policies. “Every company has their own stipulations of coverages, endorsements and exclusions. When you have your house with one company, your car at another, and a boat

at yet another, they all operate differently, and you might have a gap in coverage. Some of these companies don't even have agents, so now you're calling an 800 number. Since you don't have a representative, you're just trying to get information from somebody.” Cassie says there are a lot of misconceptions about insurance, and an agent’s job is to explain coverages and how they work or don't work. There are certain items such as jewelry, guns, gold and silverware that may not be covered or not covered in full. “Jewelry is really the big one, and on a regular homeowner’s policy, you're capped at a certain amount. There is also a deductible. So, if you're capped at $2,500 and your ring is worth $10,000, it’s a big loss.” For high-end belongings, it’s best to have separate policies. “We put them on their own policies called personal articles,” she says. “These are separate from the house and have no deductibles. It also doesn't affect homeowner’s policy rates if a claim is filed.” Running her own office keeps Cassie very busy, but she also works hard to create a worklife balance. She and her husband, Jesse, have a 3 ½ year old daughter named Eliana, who fills the majority of their free time. They also have a mini Goldendoodle named Afton. “She's my sidekick. I bring her to work with me at least a couple times a week.” To find out more, go to cassiesanetra.com.

Explore Four Unique Edina Businesses

Our February issue of Edina Lifestyle is all about spreading local love. Whether that means buying a new perfume at SENTi, creating a morning drink from Edina Coffee Roasters’ beans, grabbing a cocktail at Coalition or strolling through the gallery at Douglas Flanders & Associates – Edina has many options for those wanting to be local patrons.

Jen Knoch

SENTI After 23 years in the advertising and marketing industry, Jen Knoch’s love of fragrance became a business named SENTi. It started in 2018, when she traveled to the birthplace of perfume – Grasse, France. She sought out relationships with Grasse-based perfumers to hear their stories and understand the products’ relation to the land. This trip inspired her to start a virtual side gig, From Grasse with Love. For three years, Jen was successfully importing and selling Grasse-made fragrances in the Twin Cities via pop-up stores. At the end of 2020, Jen was approached by the Nolan Mains developer who offered her a storefront. With this opportunity and her knowledge gained from the pop-ups, Jen wanted to expand her product line beyond fragrance – and the other four senses felt like a natural evolution. SENTi opened in 2021 and now offers a gallery of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and tactile experiences for your indulgence. As a brand and store, SENTi channels a welcoming concierge ethos to bring you luxury products that elevate the everyday rituals of your daily life. 3922 W. 50th St., Edina. shopsenti.com. EDINA COFFEE ROASTERS Couple Zach and Sara Zschernitz founded Edina Coffee Roasters in 2020 after seeing the value in how coffee is a conduit for bringing people together. The company launched publicly in February 2021 with a focus on creating a small, approachable lineup of specialty coffees. “With [our] blends ranging from light and bright to dark, chocolatey and nutty, it was our hope to find a connection with community members through one of our offerings,” Zach says. They started with an online-only store first, and then expanded into wholesale roasting and in-person pop-ups. “[We have a] portable coffee cart and [we] serve espresso-based drinks on the spot, crafted with the utmost care and detail,” Zach says. Edina Coffee Roasters has been set up all over Minnesota now at different events, including farmers markets, craft fairs, art shows, weddings and graduation parties. Their wholesale network continues to grow, and a full list of partners can be found on edinacoffeeroasters.com. COALITION Coalition is owned by Eli Wollenzien and Deacon Eells. The duo grew up together in Wisconsin and later moved to the Twin Cities to pursue careers in the restaurant industry. The Minneapolis location opened in 2017 on 50th and France. The restaurant’s concept is casual fine dining American fare with a substantial wine and cocktail list. Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week. “Coalition is about the combined efforts of chefs, cooks, servers, farmers, vineyards, and brewers and I see that partnership extending to our guests by providing the highest quality food and service in a warm and welcoming environment,” Eli says. Coalition on 50th and France is planning to build a 46-seat patio with plenty of greenery that will help accommodate guests in the summer. This should be completed by summer 2023. 3808 W 50th St., Minneapolis. (952) 456-8979. coalitionrestaurant.com. CONTINUED >

DOUGLAS FLA NDERS & ASSOCIATES

In 1972, renowned gallerist Dougals Flanders opened what would become Douglas Flanders & Associates, Fine Art Gallery and Consultants. Having recently celebrated 50 years in business, Flanders & Associates is the oldest gallery in Minneapolis. A long-standing pillar in the national and international art community, Flanders has represented, exhibited and sold works by Picasso, Van Gogh and Warhol, yet has remained fully committed in his support of local artists – many of whom the gallery represents. It was inevitable that Flanders would become a successful gallery owner. Growing up, his grandparents heavily influenced his artistic development. He visited museums and galleries with his artist grandmother. Summers were spent with his art dealer grandfather in Spain.

Flanders began his professional career in New York under the tutelage of gallerist Denise René. He returned to Minneapolis and on Sept.11, 1972, opened The Unicorn Galleries, a combination art gallery and gift shop located downtown. A prolific collector since childhood, much of Flanders early inventory and exhibitions consisted of pieces from his private collection. The gallery’s first exhibition was by Georgia O’Keeffe. Not one work sold. Flanders boldly auctioned off some of his own pieces in order to add to inventory. In 1981, the gallery made its first of several location and name changes. The gallery operated in various downtown locales, doing business as Flanders Contemporary, Flanders Contemporary Art, and Douglas Flanders & Associates (or “Flanders” as it is affectionately known). In December 2020, going against all conventions, Flanders opened a second gallery in Edina, complete with a library housing over 2500 publications and artist files. Flanders uptown location closed in 2021. Douglas Flanders & Associates provides art to museums, corporations and collectors worldwide. With over 15,000 available works, they can find the perfect piece to suit every taste and budget. In addition to sales, they offer a wide variety of art related services, including estate services, framing, exhibition curation and loans. 5025 France Ave S, Minneapolis. 612-920-3497. flandersart.com.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 8 WAYS TO O R G A N I Z E A N D

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our eight tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

03 04 NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

BAG & SHOE STOR AGE Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / E D I N A

06

UPGR ADED HA NGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

07 08 LIGHTING

Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.

M AK E A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
