When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, family, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days, and it is never too late to hit the reset button and start over. The new year brings reflection on the past, as well as time to strategize for the future. Maybe it’s that bucket list vacation that you want to book, or splurging on a nice dinner out. Maybe it’s a commitment to something important to you and your family. The start of 2023 allows us to wipe the slate clean and set some great goals. January is our Health & Wellness Issue, and we have some good tidbits for you to consider. There’s a new boutique fitness option in town. SWEAT, owned by Katherine Augustsson Olson, is centered around a fun, social community which touts awesome instructors and accountability. From sculpt to barre, kickboxing to bootcamps – this gym is going to transform you for the better. Along the lines of self-care, we caught up with Cathleen Olson, owner of Edina Skin Care Specialists for almost 30 years, on how CoolSculpting Elite is a great, non-invasive way to work on those tough spots where you want to tone and shrink. With over 9 body sections to choose from, you can tighten those troublesome inches. In addition to CoolSculpting, ESCS is also known for their France Avenue facial, laser and oncological skin treatments. For facelifts, eye brow lifts, rhinoplasty, eye-lid surgeries, facial reconstructive surgery and more, we spoke with Dr. Jenna Van Beck of Hilger Face Center. With four generations of University of Minnesota education and medical care, Dr. Van Beck joins Dr. Peter Hilger and Dr. Sofia Lyford-Pike in a quest to bring the community towards looking and feeling their best. On a fun note, we connected with local Edinanian, Lauren Peterson, of Cosmic Child Crystals. Whether you want to bring amazing energy into your space or just provide your home with beautiful crystal décor, Lauren has wonderful options for both. Whether your resolution list is short or long, we encourage you to reset and enjoy a peaceful, filling, fabulous and well-balanced 2023. G E T YOU R S W E AT O N New Gym Offers Something for Everyone

There is a new fitness studio in town and community members are sweating with excitement. “SWEAT opened a few months ago and we had an outpour of support from community members and local businesses,” owner Katherine Olson says. “I knew there was an appetite for working out in person again, and I have received so much positive feedback around the new space.” The studio is located at 4508 Valley View Road in Edina and was originally under a different name and ownership. “I was a long-time client of the previous studio,” Katherine says. “It was my go to place for workouts and when I heard they were going to close, I was sad. I knew many people, including myself, used the studio as a place to escape and get our sweat on.” As Katherine thought more and more about what she could do, a plan started to form. “In 2019, I was laid off from my job in corporate America and I took the opportunity to spend more time with my family,” she says. “Fast forward to 2022 and this opportunity fell into my lap. Combining my passion for fitness and business, I decided to launch SWEAT.” Once her decision was made, Katherine acted fast to minimize how long the studio space would be closed during transition.

“The former studio had a long list of clients and excellent instructors, all of which I wanted to build on,” she says. In June of 2022, the previous gym closed, and Katherine opened her doors on July 11 under a temporary name. “I was able to open in 11 days and keep 100% of the instructors employed,” she says. “It was a fast launch. I made it happen with room to learn and make changes.” Her approach to the business was and continues to be reactive, strategic, and based on suggestions from her clients, staff and local fitness community. “I ran the temporary studio as a trial period to learn what people wanted,” Katherine says. “That time afforded the opportunity to figure out the best strategy to create a new physical permanent fitness space. I operated this way for the summer while I built the new brand with redesigned class schedules, formats and updating the facility.” After months of creation, SWEAT officially opened in October 2022. “SWEAT is a curated team of fitness instructors (with over 200 years of combined experience) who lead high-energy, structured classes with a variety of specialized formats,” Katherine says. “Classes are fun,

tough and designed to meet every ‘body’ on their own fitness journey.” A variety of classes are offered including cardio, strength training, yoga, Pilates mat sculpting and even dance. Days of the week are themed to encourage clients to try something new. Monday is COMBOSweat for those wanting cardio and strength training. Tuesday is SCULPTSweat, which follows a Yoga Sculpt format. Wednesday is STRONGSweat for a full body strength workout. Thursday is MOVESweat for those wanting to get their heart rates up. Friday and Saturday are a mixture of classes to give people a chance to try different formats. Lastly, Sunday is a restorative day with yoga and mobility classes. “SWEAT offers a variety of exciting, fun classes,” Katherine says. “We have a contagious energy that makes people want to come back again and again.” First time clients can take a class for free and after that sessions cost $24 for a single, $99 for five and $179 for 10. SWEAT is also offering an introductory limited time membership program that includes unlimited classes for $99 a month. “Another area of opportunity for SWEAT clients, besides the adult classes, is the ability to rent the studio space, along with coach-led youth team agility, mobility and strength training,” Katherine says. Anyone can rent the studio space out for parties, team building occasions and more. The event’s itinerary does not have to include a workout class, although that is an option. “For youth team training we partner with local teams, and they choose what they would like to work on, whether that’s strength, yoga or stretching,” Katherine says. Katherine has three children of her own and some of their sports teams have participated in this training. “I have loved seeing my kids interact with their teammates and build on their skills,” she says. As Katherine looks toward the future of her space, she hopes to add a more extensive group training program. “We will soon launch a full small group performance program that will be all encompassing with strength and conditioning training, nutrition and support,” she says. “Participants will go 2-3 times per week and have access to unlimited classes. We have so many exciting things coming, and I will make sure every person walking through the studio doors gets a great workout.” For more details, visit sweatmsp.com.

Dr. Jenna Van Beck

Originally from the Twin Cities, Dr. Jenna Van Beck was thrilled to join a local and prominent plastic surgery center right here in Edina this summer. “I chose to be a part of the University of Minnesota Physicians (M Physicians) Hilger Face Center for many reasons,” she says. “Every staff member at the clinic has the same goal as me: to take excellent care of our patients. This is at the forefront of everything we do. At the M Physicians Hilger Face Center, we have the expertise to help a patient with whatever needs they may have for their face - from cosmetics to cancer reconstruction.” Working alongside Dr. Peter Hilger, a fourth-generation family doctor in the practice, and Dr. Sofia Lyford-Pike, was also a huge attraction. “As the newest addition to the clinic, I have the opportunity to work alongside and collaborate with two other amazing facial plastic surgeons as I continue to build my cosmetic facial plastic surgery practice. I have a real passion for this and am excited to join such an

incredible team. Like my partners, I am a full-time faculty member at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Our legacy with the University goes back several generations and innovation has been a defining feature of who we are, hence, our tagline where legacy meets innovation.” Dr. Van Beck and her patients also appreciate the welcoming family atmosphere as well as the myriad of offerings at its new location, which opened at the beginning of this year. “It’s a beautiful space,” she says. “The practice really outgrew its old location which really speaks to the reputation of the physicians that are here. It’s much larger than the previous office and helps us provide the best for our patients. We have 3D imaging software, multiple exam rooms and a beautiful consultation room where we meet with patients.” Having a comfortable space, she believes, allows patients to feel relaxed and helps the doctors connect with them. “The biggest thing that I do as a surgeon is

really spend time with my patients. One of my favorite parts of my job is that I get to build relationships with people and can really have a huge impact on their lives.” When it comes to plastic surgery, she says the top three most requested procedures are facelifts, eyelid and brow lifts, and rhinoplasty (nose job). Of course, the clinic offers a whole gamut of facial plastic surgery procedures from ear pinning to chin augmentation. “We also have an aesthetician in-house, which is a great perk for our surgical patients,” says Dr. Van Beck. “We can send them for facials and other procedures to enhance their surgical results, expedite recovery, and maintain their results as well.” While many patients choose to have facial surgery for cosmetic reasons, others do it to alleviate health issues. “Anytime we’re doing something cosmetic, like a surgery on the nose, we’re always thinking about the functional aspect as well. They go hand in hand.”

“At Hilger we have the expertise to help a patient with whatever needs they may have for their face.”

Adds Dr. Van Beck, “If someone comes in with breathing troubles, but also wants to fix the outside of their nose, our main goal is to get them breathing better. Then it’s just a perk that we can also help them reach their aesthetic goals. “As a facial plastic surgeon, I get to have these conversations with people and build these relationships, and really help them achieve their goals, whether they’re cosmetic, functional or both.” The Hilger Face Center also carries a couple of different lines of high-quality skincare products. “One of them is SkinBetter Science and the other is Obagi,” she says. “Because we’re a surgical practice, we chose a line that gave us products that we could use to enhance the results of what we do here. These lines have a wide variety of products that help with different areas such as the eyes and neck. They are also great to use post-recovery, and we carry scar gels as well.” Specializing in the face and facial plastic surgery is something that’s unique about the Hilger Face Center. “During training, we learn the anatomy and the aesthetics of the face better than one ever could if their training wasn’t that specialized,” says Dr. Van Beck. “We have this unique ability to really know the ins and outs of the face. We also perform a good number of all of these procedures, so it’s not like there’s

something that’s being done only once or twice a year.” In addition to medical school and residency training, Dr. Van Beck did a year-long fellowship in New York focusing specifically on cosmetic surgery with a well-known expert in the field. She also teaches other physicians and practitioners in injectables such as Botox, fillers and other non-surgical procedures. She performs these procedures at the clinic as well. Having the opportunity to work with the two other doctors at the clinic is a true honor, she says. “Dr. Hilger is a phenomenal surgeon and has really expanded and innovated the specialty of facial plastic surgery. To be able to work with him is amazing. My other partner, Dr. LyfordPike, is also a phenomenal, well-respected surgeon. In addition to her cosmetic and functional practice, she does a lot of work with facial nerve paralysis and helping patients regain their ability to perform facial expressions.” Dr. Van Beck is happy to be working at a place she loves with people she admires, and she’s also delighted to be back home. “I have a wonderful husband and a young daughter, and just had a baby girl at the end of September.” To find out more about her and the M Physicians Hilger Face Center, go to mphysicians.org/hilger.

Sculpt Your Body A Cool and Easy Way to Get Rid of Fat ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK

Even with the most dedicated diet and exercise regimen, there may still be fatty areas on our bodies that we just cannot get rid of with traditional methods. This is why so many people have turned to CoolSculpting. “CoolSculpting is an FDA approved nonsurgical fat reducing method that freezes the fat, and when fat cells die off from being frozen, your body rids them through your lymphatic system,” says Cathleen Olson, a licensed advanced practice aesthetician since 1989 and the owner of Edina Skin Care. After listening to her clients complain about these stubborn areas of their bodies, she decided to add

CoolSculpting to the clinic’s list of services six years ago. Recently, Edina Skin Care upgraded its equipment. “CoolSculpting Elite is the third generation model with the latest technology,” says aesthetician and master CoolSculptor, Peg McCartan. “The applicators are larger and shaped in a way that draws the most tissue in for the best result.” And, because there are four applicators, multiple areas can be done simultaneously, which saves time. She adds, “Most CoolSculpting sessions last around three hours to treat the whole abdomen area and the flanks. Times vary based on how many cycles we’re

using for treatment.” Most people go through at least two treatments per area. As a master CoolSculptor, Peg also trains others on how to use the technology. “It’s so important to have an experienced practitioner,” she says. “The results are permanent, so it must be done right the first time. I’ve gone through Masters training and am an Allergan Medical Institute CoolSculpting trainer for other Master classes.” Before beginning treatment, Edina Skin Care ensures that their clients are good candidates. “During our complimentary consultations, we check the client’s medical history to make sure it will be safe for them, go over the technology involved and how the session will proceed on the day of treatment,” says Peg. “We then look at the area or areas the client is interested in treating, and come up with the plan of action and give them a firm price for the session.” Edina Skin Care is associated with MMK Plastic Surgery and is located within the same office. Having doctors on site is another safeguard to ensure patients can safely undergo treatments. “Let’s say someone had a hernia and they want to do the CoolSculpting in that area,” says Cathleen. “We have a doctor right here to come in, check out the patient, and make sure everything’s fine to move forward. That’s so important. I always play it safe with my clients.” After being assessed that they’re good candidates for the procedure, including for example, having what she calls “squeezable fat” and being close to their ideal weight, CoolSculpting clients start to see results in

six to 12 weeks. “We see people at six weeks to evaluate and take pictures, so they can compare the before and after,” she says. When it comes to treating areas with CoolSculpting, Cathleen explains that they’ve changed their way of thinking. “Now, instead of spreading out the treatments all over the body, we want to treat one area to completion. Those are the clients that are the happiest.” Some of the most requested areas for CoolSculpting are the inner and outer thighs, the chin, and abs. Other areas of the torso are also frequently done. And there’s no pain involved; she says there might be some tingling, but that’s it. “After we get past the first six minutes the area is numb, so it’s fairly comfortable,” says Peg. “We have a lovely CoolSculpting suite and make each patient comfortable with pillows, blankets and treats.” Cathleen is a charter member, board member and past president of the Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists, a national organization for professionals seeking further education and the development of safe, quality skin care. In addition to CoolSculpting, Edina Skin Care offers many other services for healthy skin and a beautiful body. There’s SkinPen, which she says is the only FDA-approved micro-needling device, and a variety of laser treatments. The clinic was actually the first in the state to use OPUS, a laser that uses radio frequency and helps draw plasma from the air, which lifts and tones the skin. It has very little downtime; clients are able to wear makeup the very next day.

Peg and Renee

Edina Skin Care also offers Illuminize Peel, HydraFacial, DiamondGlow treatments, laser hair removal, waxing, and lash and brow grooming. One of Cathleen’s passions is oncology skin care. She says that people going through chemo or radiation have a host of problems, such as dry skin and rashes. She meticulously studied a variety of ingredients and brought in a product line just for clients going through cancer treatments. The clinic has many other medical skin care products for all clients to use at home as well, including anti-aging, preventative and corrective products.
