As the calendar winds down for 2023 and the holidays rapidly approach, November is a time to reflect on what we are all thankful for. I am sure that could look quite different for every person, but perhaps much of it might be the same. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Although these last days of the year can sometimes be hectic, I look forward to spending as much quality time as possible with loved ones while striving to live by the words “Every day is a gift.” I feel blessed to have great family and friends, our beautiful Minnesota seasons (even if that means cold & snow), the wonderful community of Edina, and the opportunities to support our partners, local businesses and non-profits through this publication. In this issue, we spotlight Susan Kaulbars, owner of Framing Solutions. Susan puts hard work and creativity into designing each and every one of her customer’s projects. She can frame artwork, textiles, memorials, military pieces, heirlooms and more, while creating a beautiful and unique memory for generations to come. It’s the season for hosting and dining, and we’ve also included a great tablescape idea and some tips on decorating with neutrals. We've also suggested some gifts if you're starting your shopping early, as well as journal prompts to keep your daily life balanced. These are just small bits of inspiration for this wonderful and special season. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. For Susan Kaulbars, owner of Framing Solutions in Edina, being in the framing business is about much more than just finding the right frame for a photo or painting. It’s also about sharing in her customers’ special memories. “People bring in an item that they’re proud of or something that captures a moment in time that they just relish, and I get to help preserve that for them,” she says. Early in her career, Susan had a customer who wanted to refresh a watercolor that her late sister had painted. “She wanted to frame it in a way that would honor it better,” she says. “When we took it apart, on the backside of the canvas was a second watercolor that her sister had painted when they were together

on a beach on vacation and she remembered her sister painting it. It was like getting a gift from her sister from the beyond, and no matter how many wonderful moments I've had doing this, there will probably never be anything to top that one.” She especially enjoys it when customers bring in loved ones’ military memorabilia. “They take something out of a box or a drawer and don't know what to do with it,” says Susan. “So, we create something to display them and now their loved one is always with them, their items hanging on a wall being honored, cherished, and telling their story to anyone who comes by. Whether it's military, firefighters, or police - those are really the ones I'm most honored to do because I know the emotions with them are so strong.” Today, when it comes to photos, many people have them stored on phones or their computers, where they can easily be

forgotten or overlooked. Framing the really important ones gives them a whole different exposure. “When you see a special photo every day framed on a wall, it embeds into your memory,” she says. “It's not like having to scroll through your phone to find that perfect moment. I transform what they have into something that they're proud to hang on their wall, put on their mantel, or give as a gift.” These framed photographs will also most likely be passed along to multiple generations. “That's the thing about pictures on Facebook and our phones - they don't get passed down,” says Susan. Sometimes when customers come in to have their special pieces framed, they’re anxious because they’ve never done it before or don’t have any idea what they want to do. “I want to put them at ease,” she says. “It should be a fun process. It’s all the creative thoughts that go through somebody's CONTINUED >

mind that allow me to use moldings and design like some people use paint. It's all about the person and what they're bringing in. It's a collaboration. What is it that they want? Once I know this, I can then put my special twist on it.” Susan defines her aesthetic as unique, innovative, and unconventional. “I carry framing options from many different vendors, but I have curated their samples because I don't want you to walk out of here looking like you’ve had something done at a big box store,” she says. “I really try hard not to duplicate something that I've done before. Every design is created for a particular piece.” Along with custom framing, Framing Solutions offers a few ready-made framed art for sale, as well as photographs from

feature photographer Lisa Rudolph from Richfield. “I'm blessed to have her images on my gallery wall,” Susan says. After being in the framing industry for almost 20 years, opening up her own business in 2015 was also a blessing. “I’m grateful to be a survivor in business,” says Susan. “Getting past the threeyear hurdle, then the five-year hurdle, the COVID hurdle, and just the rollercoaster of being self-employed and a solo employee.” She is so thankful that she gets to do what she loves every day. “I was always creative. I was always drawing or coloring, and my side interest in high school was science fairs. One of the things that I taught my kids is that it’s more important to know why something needs to be done than how it needs to be done.

“So, why do I put the composition the way I do? What is the balance between the mat and the frame, or the art and the frame? There's a composition component, so I need to know why it needs to be done. In my case, obviously, I also need to know how to do it well.” Susan is also very thankful for her family – her husband of 42 years, their two grown children, a daughter-in-law and her beautiful granddaughter. Susan and her husband lived in Bloomington for 40 years before moving to St. Louis Park a couple of years ago.

Framing Solutions recently won a 2023 Best of Edina Award for picture framing and Susan couldn’t be prouder. “I’m so grateful to be able to do what I am really passionate about doing, which is using my art form for someone else's enjoyment,” she says. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.
