Back to school, crisper weather, and last trips to the lake. September is always a beautiful, yet bittersweet month. It has been really nice to see everyone out and about, enjoying summer as we have in years past with packed patios and the community enjoying the outdoors. Personally, I love fall the most because of its bright, blue skies and fabulous colors. September marks our Style issue, and this month we had a few stylish businesses to check out. Our team spoke with owner Mark King of Infinite Decks, and learned how he saw an opportunity in the custom deck building space to give customers something unique. In addition to one-of-a-kind designs and long-lasting materials, Mark and his team work hard building all year round to give fam ilies options to create the perfect outdoor space.

Fall wouldn’t be the same without wanting to know the upcoming fashion trends of the season. As the weather turns colder, Serge + Jane shares some emerging fall trends including color, sequins, menswear, and unique brands they carry on every floor for men, women, children and pets. This isn’t just your average retail boutique. Serge + Jane supports local makers and artists with their pop-up products and rotating gallery in between levels.

Lastly, for those heading back into the classroom, Edina Lifestyle checked in with Mathnasium Edina on their teaching style and how the Mathnasium curriculum is helping kids both in and out of the classroom. As we approach fall, we hope you have had a wonderful summer where each day is a blessing. the issue!

Enjoy

Fall and Holiday are all still about COLOR. It started in Spring and just keeps going. Barbie pinks, deep reds, vibrant purples and spice-in spired colors like mustard, cumin and cinnamon all flow right into holiday, done in traditional holiday fabrics like rich silks, velvets and sequins. We can’t wait for these collections to hit the floor. Menswear for Women: Blazers, Outerwear, Fair Isle and knit sweaters, are still going strong paired with a button down and chunky loafer. Pattern is getting even bolder for Men with great color plaids in shirts and jackets, corduroy suit separates and more. Dressing up is going to be a big focus for both Men and Women, brands are definitely ready to get people out of their ath letic gear and leggings and back into some “look good, feel good” fashion this holiday!

After working with many different carpenters, con tractors and landscapers, Mark came to realize that many decks were extremely similar in construction and design.  In that repetition, he saw an opportunity to do something different with customizable, high-end decks. “No one else was selling that stuff so in order for us to build it, we had to do it ourselves,” says Mark.  So, in 2013, Mark started his own business Infinite Decks. Mark comments, “We got to this because I just didn’t want to build the basic stuff.  Everyone else can do that.”

CONTINUED >

Social media was something Mark was keen to uti lize. From the beginning, Mark created a Facebook and Instagram page to show off recent projects and showcase behind-the-scenes of the company. “We were some of the first deck builders on there,” says Mark.  Unsurprisingly, their pages flourished due to the stream of photos of ongoing and completed projects.  Since that time, their social media has, “created a com munity that they were part of from the beginning,” says Mark. Mark has even met clients and partners through their online presence.

Carpentry was always something Mark King, owner of Infinite Decks wanted to do. Since high school he had ambitions to not only build decks, but to be the best, “The competitor in me to always strives and do better and be better,” says Mark. And from that ideology sprang Infinite Decks. Infinite Decks is a “high-end custom, outdoor-specialty company,” says Mark. That means they work on custom decks, metal pergolas, outdoor kitchens and other similar projects around the Twin Cities. In accordance to Mark’s com petitive nature, Infinite Decks strives to be the best: “We separate ourselves by bringing the quality of indoor craftsmanship outdoors. We pride ourselves on our design and quality.”

A key aspect of Infinite Decks is their custom mate rials including lighting and railings.  Mark credits their business partnerships for much of the company’s suc cess: “It’s these types of products and relationships that helps us build and create these high-end custom products that separate us from others.” Infinite Decks partners with Dekor Lighting for their custom lighting.  Dekor Lighting has created not one but several underrail lights in honor of Mark and Infinite Decks called the “King light” and the “Infinite Light” respectively.  Their custom railings come from Railcraft which offers a wide selection of colors and top profiles that are cus tom-welded and bent, as well as powder-coated rather than “assembled in your yard,” says Mark. The choice of Railcraft was an easy one for Mark because with their product, “You just get way more options,” he says.

By far the flashiest custom aspect of Infinite Decks’ builds is their StruXure louvered roofs. StruXure louvered roofs are basically motorized pergolas that act as a roof when completely closed. “It’s just a really cool option as opposed to a traditional porch roof, and you’re eliminating a lot of the natural sunlight where you dine and hang out with your family,” says Mark. What makes the StruXure louvered roofs so useful is “when you’re not concerned about shade or staying dry, you can open the louvers and let the sunlight in,” says Mark.  Especially here in Minnesota where people want to extend the use of their decks earlier in the spring and later in the fall, “The structured lou vered roof is just a great option,” says Mark.  Infinite Decks also sets themselves apart by working yearround. According to Mark, many of their customers assume projects have to go on hold after the first snow, but that just isn’t the case. “People don’t know that we build year-round,” says Mark.

The main difference of working in the winter is how the company sinks footings into the ground.  Using heat lamps, Mark is able to break through the frost in order to properly sink footings.  But otherwise work continues and “We just bundle up, drink hot coffee and hot chocolate during the day, and just bear through it really,” says Mark.

From inception, Infinite Decks was created to do something different with outdoor spaces, and “To most people a deck is just a deck,” says Mark, “To us, it’s an extension of our home.  That’s kind of where we bring our detail and quality of the indoors out.”  And that sentiment is really what Infinite Decks is all about…creating a custom space for cook outs and family dinners; creating a home, and giving homeowners the options to make it truly unique. For more, visit infinitedecks.com or call (952) 522-DECK (3325). (Instagram: @infinitedecks).

problem solved ARTICLE BY GRAHAM JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE Mathnasium Builds a Strong Foundation Outside the Classroom EDUCATION CORNER | EDUCATION28

These small groups are also fundamental to another way Mathnasium differs from many other forms of education.

Anyone who has struggled against a derivative or reached too quickly for a calculator can tell you the perils of learn ing and using that arcane subject we call Mathematics. It can be intimidating and even infuriating when the numbers just don’t make sense. And it is that frustration Mathnasium fights against. I sat down with James Cawthorne the Center Director of the Saint Louis Park-Edina Mathnasium to dis cuss how Mathnasium teaches math differently and what they look for in tutors.   Mathnasium is a tutoring support system for students K-12 that works to build math knowledge, skills and confi dence among its students.  According to James, what that boils down to is, “Primarily helping students address their gaps in their math knowledge, helping them build their confidence with math through building personal success, and also helping them keep up with their homework.”  It is a model that specifically differs from both traditional schooling and other forms of tutoring available.  One of those ways is to not focus on a single topic at a time. In many schools, “You do everything one shot at a time, and then you move on to the next subject.  And while sometimes it builds back on it, you may go away to some thing else and not see that subject for a while.” says James.  This jumping from topic to topic can make retention diffi cult. Mathnasium instead builds a repertoire of topics that a student will practice on any given day in order to build long-term retention of many foundational topics.  “I see those topics over the course of 2 weeks, not just in one 2-3 day section.  You see it multiple times which means you have to recall how to do that over time, and it tends to build better retention of the skills or the math process you are trying to learn going forward. You can’t go through it in one day and be done with it.”

Mathnasium also differs from many other tutoring ser vices. Their instructors work with 2-4 students at a time in a form of distributive tutoring. This size is optimal because in traditional one-on-on tutoring, “Once a stu dent begins to work, the tutor only watches them, rather than actively helping another student.” says James. In larger groups, instructors can pivot student to student to make the most of their time.

Instructors at Mathnasium utilize a novel way of teaching math called Socratic questioning. When a student has a question or is stuck on a problem, rather than telling them Bobby Tarnowski, Owner

CONTINUED > 29| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/EDINASEPTEMBER 2022

Another key difference, is in the flexibility of its tutors in their lessons plans.  While Mathnasium has its own set of fundamentals they teach throughout a student’s time there, the first focus is on helping students learn what they are being taught in school. “I want to teach them based on how they are doing it in school, how their teacher asks them how they do it, so they can be successful in the class room. Then, when they get to that topic in Mathnasium, I will teach them the more traditional process,” says James.  This flexibility and tailoring of tutoring styles caters to not only the student, but that student’s classes, and even teachers. It is key to their entire process.

what they did wrong, instructors will ask them series of questions to understand their thought process. These questions force the student to walk through their steps and reconsider what they’ve done, rather than simply being told what they need to do next. Instructors are designed to be an intervention in the event of a problem, rather than walking students through correct answers. Because as James puts it, “Math is a doing sport.  You don’t learn it by reading about it, you do it by solving problems.” Schooling can be hard at any time, and for any number of reasons even when not contending with virtual learn ing, hybrid classes, and condensed school years. With its specialized teaching styles, adaptive curriculums, and focus on individual students, Mathnasium can be a haven for students struggling with the subject. Last, but not least, is Mathnasium’s unique focus on  developing stu dents’ math confidence. “Developing math knowledge is part of it, but for many students it’s building the math confidence ,” says James. Once students become confi dent with math and more comfortable with numbers, not only will they be better equipped for their homework, but they will be more open to learning and using math in the future. And that’s exactly why Mathnasium was created in the first place.

“I want to teach them based on how they are doing it in school, how their teacher asks them how they do it, so they can be successful in the classroom. Then, when they get to that topic in Mathnasium, I will teach them the more traditional process.”
