Why did summer seem to last so long when we were kids? Nowadays, it seems to be over in the blink of an eye. Maybe it’s because every moment seems so much more precious after the past two years. In these current times, it’s all about making the most of time with family and friends. Hopefully, you have been able to make time for self-care, connections, and doing what you deem most valuable this summer. August is our annual Kids & Pets issue, and the Edina Lifestyle team found a gem off of Cahill Road at Chang’s Yong-In Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do school. Grandmaster Chang teaches students of all ages and belt levels the key fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do, including the principles of integrity, courtesy, and patience just to name a few. Being an important part of the martial arts lineup, this particular discipline reaches much further than just exercise and self-defense. We also caught up with Officer Mike Bengtson and his partner on the Edina Police force, Gryf. Gryf is a highly trained, purebred German Shepherd who is an integral part of the team. But off-duty, he is just a fun, affectionate, regular toy-loving dog. Lastly, our team spoke with Tony Flint and Scott MacDonald of Great Plains Windows and Doors on a local Country Club neighborhood project they completed. Since there are many vintage homes throughout the city, Tony and Scott explain what made this home unique and how Great Plains kept the integrity of the look while bringing quality, security, and a long-lasting Andersen product into the mix. Pets can bring such joy into our lives and oftentimes become one of the most important family members. We found some pet friendly recipes to make at home to treat your furry friends! FROZEN STRAWBERRY DOG TREATS The perfect healthy summer treat for your favorite pooch! These frozen treats are simple to make and will last for up to two months in the freezer.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups strawberries fresh or frozen (about 3/4 pound) • 1 banana • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (or regular yogurt, plain) • 2 Tablespoons honey • 1/4 cup water

DIRECTIONS 1. Choose your favorite silicone mold and place it on a baking sheet or something hard that is easy to move. You can also use ice cube trays if desired! 2. Blend all of the ingredients together, and fill each mold section. 3. Freeze them until hard (approximately 30 minutes) and store the treats in a sealable bag in the freezer.

When Grandmaster Sung Chan Chang moved from South Korea to Edina almost 7 years ago, it was always his intention to start a Tae Kwon Do school in his new home. Having studied Tae Kwon Do for 42 years, Grandmaster Chang is a seventh-degree blackbelt in the traditional Korean Martial Art. In South Korea, Grandmaster Chang owned and operated a gym called Paju for more than 10 years and graduated from the famous Yong-in University with a master’s degree in sport’s management specializing in Tae Kwon Do. But more than that prestigious pedigree, Grandmaster Chang’s goal for Master Chang’s Yong-in Martial Arts was simple: “To spread the Korean tradition of marital arts such as healthy mind and healthy body through Tae Kwon Do so that everyone who participates gets to know Korean culture.” And since 2019, they have been doing just that. What many don’t understand about Tae Kwon Do, is the rigorous training extends beyond techniques and styles of defense to mental training. “Tae Kwon Do isn’t just physical training. Mental training is one of the main things we focus to,” says master Yunseo Chang, translating for Grandmaster Chang. Because Tae Kwon Do is the traditional Korean martial art, it values respect highly: “Tae Kwon Do is pretty much South Korean culture where you have to respect and also respect your opponent when you’re in a competition.” Says Master Yun. The early stages of learning Tae Kwon Do specifically focus on mental training and respect. “They also learn humility and basic

social life skills through the Tae Kwon Do so that way students can learn what discipline is through those materials,” says Master Yun. In fact, mental training is so important to Tae Kwon Do, the last word ‘Do’ translates to “‘the way of life’ or ‘philosophy’ so that Tae Kwon Do isn’t just for self-defense. We also care about students’ personality and social life skills,” says Master Yun. And it was that mental strength that appealed to Grandmaster Chang from the beginning. The respect, perseverance, and confidence learned from Tae Kwon Do translated to everyday life: “He liked how he gained confidence from the Tae Kwon Do and had the mindset that you don’t give up easily,” said Master Yun. Grandmaster Chang opened his school in 2019 after discovering there was no Tae Kwon Do school in the area. The school teaches all ages and levels: “Anyone who is interested,” says Master Yun. Grandmaster Chang’s Yong-in Martial Arts uses a belt curriculum starting at the white belt and moving all the way up to black belt. The school runs on three month testing terms where students learn new techniques and practice for before a test at the end of the period. But here again, mental strength is just as important as technique: “I know that technique matters a lot but what we want to see from students is their confidence, their effort, basically that they are trying their best. They might make mistakes because they are nervous, but what we want to see is that they aren’t giving up and finishing what they started,” says Master Yun.

Less than a year after the school opened, it had to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “We were trying to rise up, to get better and better and get more members and suddenly the pandemic happened,” says Master Yun. The school worked with pre-recorded lessons and Zoom classes, but “even though we tried our best it was always hard,” says Master Yun. A key issue was the mirroring of video: “When we do a left hand motion it shows a right hand motion to students,” says Master Yun, which made teaching remotely even more difficult. But despite that, the they didn’t give up: “As with Tae Kwon Do, we didn’t want to give up easily because that’s why we learn Tae Kwon Do,” says Master Yun. Now the school is back to teaching in-person classes again to all ages. A final, key aspect of Tae Kwon Do are the five tenants of the martial art. They are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit. These are the tenants that students are expected to embody, not only while practicing, but in their lives beyond Tae Kwon Do. It again underscores importance of mental strength integral to Tae Kwon Do and the just how highly the martial art values respect. A TRUE PARTNER IN CRIME GRYF IS A KEY MEMBER OF THE EDINA POLICE TEAM

German Shepherds Gryf and Blitz traveled a long way to join the Edina K-9 Unit. Born from breeders in Poland and Slovakia respectively, both dogs then crossed the Atlantic to train in patrol work and narcotics detection in order to finally become fully-trained police dogs. I sat down with Officer Mike Bengtson to discuss the K-9 unit, and of course, his partner Gryf. When an officer is selected to join the K-9 unit, they are paired with the young dog that will one day be their partner. These dogs are known as ‘green dogs’ and don’t yet know any commands or even their names. “They have no training whatsoever when they come here from Europe,” says Mike. These green dogs are then enrolled in a rigorous 16 week

training program designed to teach them all they need to know to be part of the K-9 unit as well as build a bond between dog and officer. For Mike and Gryf, this training took place at the St. Paul Police K-9 School. This program starts with a food-based reward system where the dogs are trained at feeding times with officers feeding them by hand when they successfully perform commands. This positive reinforcement is key to the training program as well as bonding the dog to officer. Eventually, however, this food-based reward system is replaced with a ball reward and, “Of course everything goes haywire because dogs love toys and balls. It kind of turns it into a clown show for a while. But that’s what Gryf lives for is his toys,” says Mike. But even at the end of that program, the dogs aren’t done training. Every year after that, dogs must be re-certified in their respective specialized trainings. K-9’s Gryf and Blitz are certified by the United States Police Canine Association in both patrol work as well as narcotics detection. Mike and Gryf are constantly training to maintain that level of expertise: “It’s a lot of work, constantly training even on days off […] because in my mind you get out what you put into the program. I want to have this program be successful at the end of the day when it comes down to it, Gryf could potentially save someone’s life. I want to make sure he is the best,” says Mike. The breed of dogs used for K-9 Units varies program to program, but Edina only uses male German Shepherds from specific working dog bloodlines dating back to World War II. “They’re pretty level-headed dogs and that’s what we want for the department and the community as well. They aren’t just straight big-bad-police-canines. We want social personalities,” says Mike. That social aspect of K-9 Units is crucial to community outreach. A key part of the K-9 unit’s job is to be approachable by the public: “Anyone from kids to adults can go up and pet him and get some love from him,” says Mike.

K-9 Units serve a variety of purposes. Gryf, like all Edina K-9 dogs, is trained in patrol work, narcotics detection and apprehension. Patrol work consists of searching for missing people and evidence as well as following scent trails and tracking. “We primarily use the dogs for their nose, which are estimated to be about 10,000-100,000 times better than ours,” says Mike. In fact, various K-9 units have many uses of their dogs because of their powerful sense of smell. The Minnesota DNR uses a similar unit trained to smell and detect invasive zebra mussels that appear in Minnesota lakes and rivers. Through the intensive 16 week program, the constant training, and living and working together, the bond between officer and dog is designed to be strong: “I spend more time with Gryf than I do my wife. He’s with me at work, he’s with me at home, he’s lying on his bed right next to mine when I’m sleeping,” says Mike. And even after the dogs retire, they often remain with their officers and transition into a house pet role. Mike’s previous dog Ike (yes, it was the Mike and Ike team, like the candy) was part of the K-9 Unit before developing Epilepsy and having to retire. Now, “he’s literally just a house dog and living the dream,” says Mike. From finding missing people to keeping them safe, K-9 Units continue to be an important part of policework and the community.

variety of options such as different styles of windows and doors, color options, hardware, glass types, screen material and more so people can narrow down their choices. It’s very detailed and can actually provide an image of what the newly designed window or door will look like. “It’s also a massive time saver,” says Scott. “We can interact with the homeowner throughout the entire process and can have information to them including project costs very quickly. The program allows the homeowner to see and pick out options in real time. Of course, if people prefer paper proposals and contracts, we’re happy to accommodate that as well.” Customers can CONTINUED >

also come into their showroom in Oakdale to view and pick out different product offerings and options. Once the windows and doors are manufactured, the next critical part is the installation. “You can have the best window or door in the world, but if it’s not installed properly by certified contractors and installers like Great Plains it may not make any difference,” says Tony. “Water or air infiltration, or hard to open windows may be the result of poorly installed windows or doors. Our entire team at GPW takes great pride in their craftsmanship and the installation process.” And if something unplanned were to happen, Great Plains will make it right. “We’re going to resolve it in a manner where the customer’s going to remember how well it was handled,” says Scott. Great Plains recently completed a project in the Country Club neighborhood in Edina, where they have strict building codes and don’t allow tear downs. Most of the houses there were built in the early 1900s. “Our customer lives in a 1932 home that had the original single pane double hung windows that were painted brown on the exterior,” says Scott. “They wanted a refreshed looking window with greater energy efficiency, but at the same time wanted to maintain the original look and feel of their home.”

“What we ended up doing is swapping out the painted brown exterior for a new dark bronze maintenance-free exterior, and then we kept the interior as stained wood to recreate the look of the original windows. We custom matched all of the original trim throughout the house so you could literally walk through their house and not be able to tell which trim was original and which was new.” Andersen, he says, has products specifically designed for older homes. These include different interior wood options, such as pine, maple, oak, cherry, and mahogany, which allows homeowners to maintain the original wood species look as well as a close architectural match on the inside. Scott explains energy efficiency, sound dampening, and additional security are big reasons people want their windows or doors replaced. “For example, says Scott, we have recommended laminated glass as an option for homeowners on all their main floor windows for added security.”

“Getting out of their home quickly is also an additional concern,” says Tony. “If their old windows do not operate properly, especially in a bedroom for example, there’s a fear of not being able to escape if there’s a fire.” “Additionally,” Tony adds, “Great Plains offers many other Andersen options through multiple product lines and a variety of choices.
